 raiders 3 - 1 Armada

Welcome back everyone! Tonight we'll be recapping the game from this evening between the Halifax Raiders and the Anchorage Armada. The Armada played some pretty decent defense giving up only 25 shots total for the game, but the Raiders were able to rally early to get the momentum on their side.

First Period:

Just a few minutes into the first period, Bust got caught early for embellishment. 1:21 into the powerplay for the Raiders, Maximilian Egger let off a rocket from the point that bounced off the boards and ricocheted into the legs of Benjamin Blue. Unbeknownst to Blue, the puck slid right under him and he accidentally knocked the puck backwards into the net to open the scoring for the Raiders.

A little over half way through the first period, Kyle Corbett intercepted a pass by Tucker Baloo in the Halifax zone. It was a 3 on 2 going back into the Anchorage zone and Crush Cile was able to put another puck past Benjamin Blue to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.

Crush Cile 3 (Quinn Cullen 5, Kyle Corbett 4) at 12:44

Second Period:

It was a pretty quiet second period besides a few powerplay chances for the Raiders that were unsuccessful. At 15:58 of the period Roly Rollerson was able to pick up a rebound to put the Raiders up 3-0.

Roly Rollerson 2 (Crush Cile 4, Quinn Cullen 6) at 15:58

Third Period:

It was another quite period for both teams, Halifax with the lead was more reserved and played some good defense while Anchorage was continuing to apply pressure to get themselves on the board. At 11:42 of the period Steve McGirthensons was able to do just that. After a couple of shots that missed the net, McGirthensons retrieved the free puck to put one past Geezus Kryyst to get them on the board.

Steve McGirthensons 2 (Sean Stevenson Jr. 2, Niklas Mueller 4) at 11:42

Following the goal from McGirthensons, the Armada got two last chances on the powerplay but they were unable to break through.

Halifax went on to win this game 3-1.

Rookie Spotlight
Today we will be focusing on a big name here in the SMJHL. He is the 4th OA pick, and Halifax second line Right Wing Crush Cile! He absolutely killed it today posting a line of 1-2-3 +2. Halifax ended up in a favorable position early due to a diving minor from Anchorages player BustOliver Kovacs and Crush Cile took advantage of the situation and set up Maximilian Egger for an easy goal. Cile wasn't done, not by any means, less than 10 minutes later with both teams at full strength Crush Cile on a pass to the slot from from Quinn Cullen, scored his third goal in the SMJHL which put his team ahead 2-0 well over halfway through the first period. Cile still had plenty of gas in the tank! Though the second period was quiet all around, Cile showed up big with a long and, perfectly timed pass to Roly Rollerson for another Halifax scored bringing the score to 3-0, and from this point forward Cile, and the rest of the Raiders focused on heavy defense and, only allowed on goal for the whole game. I think Crush Cile has an exciting career ahead of him if he continues to show up like he did today!

TSN Turning Pont... our TSN turning point this game is a weird one. It's the penalty which was and wasn't called! Early in the game, 2:06 into the first period, and we have the penalty which changed the game. Montreal is buzzing to start and has the puck. Fourth liner grinder Tylor Schofield is on the ice against the Armada star Bust. Bust has the puck and is circling around Tylor, Tylor pokecheck and the puck is loose but DOWN GOES BUST! The refs arm is up, Bust is up on one knee and ready to get going on the Power Play, BUT WAIT! The penalty is not to Tylor it's to Bust! Bust is off for two minutes for diving! Halifax would score on the ensuing powerplay and go on to win the game 3-1, never looking back.

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into the shameful Bust

Shameful Bust and no, I don't mean a exposed pair of lady boobs.
I'm talking about Bust the Armada player who's diving antics brings a shame to great sport that is ice hockey.

I'm sure this is going to get me somewhat trouble but I'd like to see Bust suspended and made an example of.
20+game and fine him a portion of his salary, that way he might learn not to engage in this dreadful act and might set the tone for others.

I for one do not want to see players turn in to the likes of Neymar

raiders Rookie D watch  Armada

Back again for week three! This time we were in Halifax to see the Armada come to town. We had a lot on our plate tonight as there were seven rookies given significant ice time. Here's how they went:

Thomas Speardane. (3 shots, 1 block, 1 hit, 19:02 ToI, 1:43PP, 2:43PK)

A solid night for the young American who is currently getting a lot of responsibility on the top pairing for Halifax. He was used across the whole line up logging minutes on both special teams units and was a constant danger from the blue line with five shots, three of which hit the net. He was often used to initiate the change dumping the puck ten times, more than any other defenseman. He does have to be careful of his offensive positioning on the ice though as he was guilty of icing the puck three times where as defensively he is more often than not in the right place which allowed him to make sixteen interceptions. For a top two defenseman Speardane will want to work on his passing accuracy as he misplaced twenty of his forty nine passes as well as working on keeping his head up as he was checked off the puck three times. A busy night for Speardane with both positives and negatives to take away.
Pierre Laroche-Durocher ( -1, 2PIM, 23:03, 4:47PP, 3:26PK)

Laroche-Durocher had more minutes tonight than any of the other rookie defensemen. He was used in all three units logging significant minutes on special teams. He had the second most completed passes of the first year D (32/52) and intercepted the puck a decent fourteen times. He was unlucky to finish with -1 and he was issued a minor penalty for holding which turned out to be inconsequential while he also iced the puck three times under pressure but there were the only blemishes on an otherwise straightforward night.

Maximillian Egger (1G, 2 shots, 1 hit, 21:43, 3:59PP, 3:41PK)

Egger makes up the second part of the top pairing for Halifax and it shows in the number of minutes he picked up tonight. He was the only rookie D to score a goal, which came on the power play, while also completing the most passes (38/56). He made thirteen interceptions and drew a penalty to help keep the Raiders on top during the game. An overall excellent game for Egger who hit the net with every shot and protected the puck well while moving it up the ice.

Craig Finley (-1, 2PIM, 20:24, 5:50PP)

Compared to his team mates Finley had a more difficult night. Making less than half of his total passes (20/41) and putting no shots on target (0/3) despite having the most minutes on the power play of any of the rookie defensemen. As well as this he in explicitly lost control of the puck showing that he really needs to work on his puck handling skills. He made ten interceptions to partially negate some of his profligacy with his passing but also put his team at a disadvantage by taking and ill advised tripping penalty. All in all a night to forget for the young American.

Rex Kirkby (19:21, 4:20PP, 1:09PK)

There was nothing flashy from the Brit this evening. Picking up almost twenty minutes of ice time with some usage on the special teams unit, mainly on the power play. Kirkby mainly made the safe play and that showed in his passing stats (27/38) which were the best percentage amongst the rookies. He also made the second most interceptions with seventeen which looks to be a result of management instructing him to be more conservative in his play after having the worst +/- ratio of rookie at the half way point of the season. All in all he anchored the Armada defense admirably but probably could have afforded to be more adventurous on a night that his team went down 3 to 1.

Sean Stevenson Jr. (1A, +1, 5 hits, 1 block, 17:14, 5:39PK)

Sean Stevenson Jr. has been moving up the lineup in Anchorage. Now being utilised as a shutdown defenseman on the second pairing he is starting to show his worth after a late start to the season. Grabbing the most minutes on the penalty kill he was a big part in the Armada denying Halifax on five of six opportunities. He picked up a nice assist on the McGirthensons goal and was a wrecking ball accumulating five big hits in his seventeen minutes. Stevenson's passing did leave a bit to be desired though, turning over the puck eleven times on twenty three pass attempts.

Tucker Baloo (-2, 2 shots, 21:42, 3:36PP, 4:05PK)

The top pairing for Anchorage did not fare well tonight. On the ice for both even strength goals meant that Baloo ended the night a -2. Often having to throw the puck in to give tired legs a rest Baloo was forced to dump the puck six times to get line changes in. He did put two good shots on goal that resulted in rebound chances but was mainly on the back foot making the most interceptions of all the rookies with eighteen. Somewhat of an unlucky evening for the big American who put in a good effort but ultimately came out on the wrong side of a tough loss.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Halifax Raiders: 53 wins on 96 faceoffs taken ( 55,2%)
Colorado Raptors: 43 wins on 96 faceoffs taken (44,8%)

Close game in the faceoffs circle here. The Halifax Raiders with quite a good advantage.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Halifax Raiders' center Mr. Faceoffs with 16 wins on 25 faceoff taken (64,0%)
Loser: Halifax Raiders' center Kristof Kovacs with 7 wins on 18 faceoff taken (38,8%)

Today, on Harvey's Fail of the Game.

Maximilian Egger is a very good defenseman for the Halifax Raiders since he was drafted 10th overall in the last SMJHL draft. He now has three goals and 15 assists, a plus/minus of plus-2, and one broken glass panel for his most important statistics... Wait, what? One broken glass? Yes indeed. It happened in this game, the 39th game of the SMJHL season, when the Raiders faced the Anchorage Armada. Egger hadn't scored a single goal then, and opened the score on the powerplay with his first career goal. He celebrated with a strong joy. Sadly, the glass wasn't as strong.

In today's game the Halifax Raiders traveled to Kelowna to battle the Knights. A game which featured the Raiders winning 3-1 and were going to spotlight a second string, right wing player by the name of Crush Cile who hand a big hand in the Raiders win today. Cile was a big problem for the knights all game as he produced 1 goal, as well as two helpers. Not just two assists but two primary assists. He played a huge part in the Raiders win today and with a stat line of 1-2-3 and a +2 player rating its hard to say if Halifax would have pulled of the upset against the high powered Kelowna Knights without the barstool Player of the Game.

Seagull here yet again ,with the post-game CHEW report! Today, my fellow Czech brothers and sisters, we are covering game 39 of the SMJHL season with the Halifax Raider vs Anchorage Armada. A very close game game however the Raiders were able to put it away in the 3rd and stave off the Armada in the 3rd.

Crush Cile has been outstanding for the Raiders so far in the season. Being drafted 4th overall and on a line with 2nd overall Leshaun King can only be good things. Cile was able to wrack up 1 goal and 2 assists for a whopping 3 point game. His performance that night was indicative of his success so far. He currently sits at 5th for points among Rookies, 9th for goals in the league with 13, and 1st for shooting percentage with an astounding 23.64%. He can keep up this productions he can very easily have 20 goals before the end of the season.

SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game

Jordan von Mott can't win anywhere on the ice

In another "big picture" missed opportunity on the game, Jordan von Mott really struggled against the Halifax Raiders in every aspect of the game.  A physical player, he only registered one hit in 23 minutes of TOI.  All three of his shots were stopped easily by second star Geezus Kryyst.  An early second-period penalty hurt his team's scoring chances.  Even in his shifts he was unfortunate, sharing ice with an opposing goal twice and finishing at a -2.  This is just not the kind of game you want to have half-way through the season.

As we always say...

He's gotta want that one back!

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

Tonight's Game showed a young Raiders team defeating the Armada 3-1, and one player showed his defensive prowess tonight. Leshaun King wasn't able to tally a point but his defensive play was clinical. King was able to spend almost 25 percent of his total play time on the penalty kill, totaling four minutes and 8 seconds. King registered a hit and continued his success at the faceoff dot, winning 19 out of 32 contests. His steadfast defense allowed his teammates to play much more aggressive and lead to the line scoring two goals, giving Leshaun a +2 rating on the night.

Game 39: Halifax vs. Anchorage
raiders 3-1  Armada

Rookie of the Game: Crush Cile

Halifax Raiders rookie Crusch Cile had an absolute dominant night up against the Anchorage Armada, having a point off of each of the three goals that were scored for his team. His first goal appeared in the first period where he managed to help get fellow rookie defenseman Maxilian Egger on the power play net his first goal of the season. Cile's next point in this game came when he scored his own goal that was assisted by team veterans Quinn Cullen and Kyle Corbett. Cole's third and final point came in the second period where he assisted defenseman Roly Rollerson score his second goal of the season. He also ate minutes having almost 19 minutes played in this game, close to an entire period, and managed to win two out of the four face-offs he was put into.

Mr. Faceoffs makes his second appearance on this list after having won the award in Game 9. Each of these players was rocked 3 times during the game, again, continuing to increase the physical play as the season moves forward. Jordan Von Matt was reached for comment after the game, “It’s hockey. If you can’t take a few hits, get off the ice. Now get out of my face.”
