Week 6, game 76: Anchorage v Montreal.
#1

Armada 4 Anchorage v Montreal 3 Militia

Coming into game week six we had a ding dong battle as the Militia visited the Armada. Both teams had been having an average start to the season fighting for one of the lower play off spots so it was an important game to lay down a marker against what was likely to be a main rival come seasons end.

First period:

The first period was an equally matched arm wrestle with both teams having plenty of opportunities but failing to capitalise on them. Anchorage came out of the blocks fast and within the first minute Doug Dimmadome and Muhammad Mclovin both had forced Montreal goalie Petr Vrana into good saves. However soon afterwards Rex Kirkby was rocked by a big hit from Harvey Danger and Montreal started to take control. This lead to our first goal of the game when Vital Kravstov won a face off against Aittokallio in the Anchorage zone, paddled the puck between his legs to Radovan Hudec who came around the back of the circle and sniped one top right for his seventh goal of the season.

The Armada didn't allow their heads to go down and came back inside of a minute, Sean Stevenson Jr. hacking in a the loose puck after Vrana had allowed a juicing rebound on a Doug Dimmadome shot. Stevenson Jr's second of the season tied the game up at one apiece. The game continued to be helter skelter with the puck going up and down the ice regularly as both teams struggled to assert dominance. The rest of the period characterised by missed shots rather than good opportunities.

Second period:

In the second period the Armada started to take control of the game. Eero Niemi picked up his fifth of the season early in the stanza and this was followed by a period of sustained pressure by the Militia. However they were unable to breakdown Benjamin Bleu and Stephen Wormster took a needless holding penalty to put Anchorage on the power play. This lead to the Armada winning a face off in the Montreal End Cameron Carter II beat Hudec on the draw, the puck squirted its way to St. Raegan who swept home for number six for the year.

Third period:

At this point it looked as if the Militia were in danger of being on the receiving end of a thrashing. However they got it together at the break and came out fighting, the Armada could perhaps have been accused of being a bit complacent and allowing Montreal to get back into the game. Straight from the get go the Canadian team were showing more hustle and urgency to the loose pucks and were pinning Anchorage back into their own zone.  Bleu made a number of good saves but ultimately Montreal were able to find a way through the wall, Rafe Urlich getting his sixth aftercapatalising on a Cody Johansen face off win. This was becoming a theme of the game with half of the goals scored in regulation coming directly off of a face off win. As the period came towards the final five minutes Montreal really started to ramp up the pressure looking for the game tying goal. The Armada broke but missed the net three times trying to restore their two goal cushion and the Militia raced back down the ice. Pivonka delfected a Hudson shot and it was going off target but after an improbable bounce off of Bleu Jeff Brogan was in the right place at the right time to shovel the puck home earning himself a team leading eighth goal of the season.

Both teams went looking for a winner and the game went back to being a bit scrappy with neither team able to maintain possession for any length of time. At the end of the period we were still all tied up so we went to overtime.

Overtime.

The Armada came out of the dressing room firing for the extra period and they were all over Montreal in the first minute and a half. However after a poorly weighted clearance from Kirkby went for icing Anchorage were forced to cling on until the end of the five minutes. Niklas Mueller icing the puck three times in an attempt to get relief for a tired Armada lineup. Despite this the Militia were unable to find a breakthrough and off we went to the shootout.

Shootout.

The shootout is always a bit of a lottery but the Armada made this one look easy. Doug Dimmadome was first up and duly delivered with a quick no nonsense shot to the top corner. Rafe Urlich led off for Montreal and after coming in slowly he tried to go forehand to backhand but Bleu followed him all the way and easily padded the puck aside. Grayson St. Raegan was second off the rank and he came blazing in before smashing a low drive five hole which will be one that Vrana will definitely want back. With the Armada going two for two Piotr Czerkawski needed to make his effort count to keep the game alive. However he mishandled the puck as he approached the net and ended up missing altogether giving the Armada a hard fought 4-3 victory.

Three stars.

1st star: Cameron Carter II (2A, +1, 2 shots, 7 hits, 23:19)

2nd star: Rafe Urlich (1G, +1, 4 shots, 4 hits, 23:34)

3rd star: Grayson St. Raegan (1G, +1, 4 shots, 1 block, 24:40)

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Anchorage Armada: 39 wins on 87 faceoffs taken (44,8%)
Montreal Militia: 48 wins on 87 faceoffs taken (55,2%)

Clear advantage on the dot for the Montreal Militia here.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Montreal Militia's center Vital Kravtsov with 13 wins on 16 faceoff taken (81,3%)
Loser: Montreal Militia's center Radovan Hudec with 4 wins on 12 faceoff taken (33,3%)

Rookie Spotlight
Another very close game, this one coming down to a shoot out where the Militia were schooled by Anchorage. This was another game where there weren't very many standout performances by rookies, however we are going to take a look at Rex Kirkby the Defenseman from the Anchorage Armada! He proved to be quiet a problem for Montreal with his hard nose style of defense. Kirkby ended up laying out a total of three people, Montreal got bodied for a lot of this game and, it really began to slow down their style of offense. Kirkby also manage to get in front of a shot and save his goalie the trouble of stopping it.  If he can continue to improve with disrupting opposing offensive progression he can be one of the top Dmen down here, and maybe even up in the SHL!

Week Six. Game 76. Anchorage Armada Armada versus Montreal Militia Militia

Analysis of the First Star: Cameron Carter II Armada

Sometimes, it seems that points alone often warrant a first star in a game, but in this particular case Cameron Carter's seven hits that he administered on the opposition directly led to two goals as well as a number of opportunities. He was a one man wrecking crew for the entire game.

He assisted Sean Stevenson Jr in the first, quickly tying the game after Montreal broke ice first. He then delivered a tape-to-tape pass through the legs of a fumbling defenseman to Grayson St. Raegan in the second for a highlight reel goal.

His great physical play without getting a penalty helped lead the Armada to the win, though it took them a shoot-out to finally get there.

Great job Cameron!

A late surge by the Montreal Militia allowed them to force OT and come out of the game with a point. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough as they weren't able to topple their opponents in overtime or the shootout. In a rough and undisciplined game, there were 12 penalties handed out. This had little effect on the game however, as the only goal on the 12 powerplays came from Anchorage's Grayson St. Raegan late in the second period. Anchorage was the only team to score in the shootout, doing it twice. Montreal was unable to capitalize and wase unable to push things to their last shot. they leave the game disappointed as they lose some ground in the playoff race that's beginning to shape up.

Anchorage Squeaks by Montreal

This was an exciting back and forth game where both teams dug deep. Montreal controlled the pace early and Hudec put them on the board in the 4th minute. Anchorage strucm back quickly thanks to Stevenson Jr. Shots were even in the first with seven a piece.

Anchorage toom over early in the second with a beauty from Nieme. St. Raegan closed out the period beating Vrana on the power play. Montreal are really good at digging holes for themselves.

Ulrich put a spark in Montreal scoring in the third but they were still trailing by one. After a slew of penalties Brogen tied it up with a minute left.

Blue was solid in the shootout while Vrana's confidence issues continue to drag the team down.

Welcome to the 13th edition of the Shot Blocker of the Game award.

Tonight's winner is: Viktor Kolesnikovs of the Anchorage Armada. Viktor becomes the first player to win back to back awards and only the 2nd to win 2 awards this season.

This game wasn't a very good one for this award much like the 2nd edition of the award I almost gave it to a goalie but both goalies gave up 3 goals and didn't face very many shots. Kolesnikovs had both of his shot blocks in a 2 minute span that helped his team maintain momentum and keep the game tied early in the first period. The Armada would go on to win 4-3 in the shootout and they may have Kolesnikovs to thank for that as who knows how the game goes if the Militia go up 2-1 at that point in the game.

Blues' Goon of the Game

Living up to his name in this tight shootout win for the Armada was Militia defenceman Harvey Danger. Why is that, you ask? Well because he was the Goon of the Game, of course! Harvey banged up two bodies out there like the absolute freaking transport truck that he is. In the third period he grabbed a well earned roughing penalty and a slightly soft hooking penalty, which solidified his place at the top of the goon board for tonight’s game. Harvey Danger is a dangerous player out there on the ice and he could easily win Goon of the Game honours again sometime soon. Keep your head up when Danger is out there!

Looking at Alternatives for Third Star

Tonight we're going to take a look at the third star of this game, Grayson St. Raegan. While he did spectacular himself with a goal on four shots, winning 17 of 32 face-offs and playing heavy minutes with over 24 on the night. We then have to wonder, is there anybody else who could be a factor in this game and could be worthy of that spot?

In this case, there is one. His linemate Doug Dimmadome!

Dimmadome may not have played the heavy minutes, specifically the defensive minutes played by St. Raegan due to his face-off ability. However, he was a major factor in puck play and putting pressure on the defense. Specifically, when he was on the ice for his over 20 minutes, Dimmadome managed to accrue 8 shots on goal. That led the game entirely by exactly double his next highest competitor. He ended up with an assist, but many more tertiary assists where he may not get credit but had the goaltender moving, the defense having to play him tighter and more aggressively and opened up lanes for his teammates.

The biggest impact of all was in the shootout. As the very first shooter, Dimmadome managed to pot a goal. While St. Raegan closed it out on the next shot with a goal himself, Dimmadome immediately put the pressure on Montreal to match him and they couldn't muster up the courage to do so. Had he failed to score that goal, it could go an extra round or Montreal could have been more relaxed out of the gate and made this more competitive or even turned it around on Anchorage. Dimmadome stayed calm and proved why he's so valued by his team.

While you can't go wrong with St. Raegan as the third star, Dimmadome definitely proved he was more than capable for that spot.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

Pivonka's Pick

The Armada and Militia are back in action and take it all the way to the shootout but once again its time to point out another bad performance by the Armada center Elias Armia Jr. With no points and a minus two rating, Armia managed just one shot and one hit while also taking a minor penalty. But once again the real disappointment came on the faceoff dot where he went 6/15 and once again continued to surrender the puck at every opportunity. The Armada will not be able to sustain these kinds of performances from Armia and must consider dropping his ice time from the 16 minutes he's currently playing.

Physical Player of the Game - Cameron Carter II
No question, tonights player of the game is Cameron Carter II as he laid an impressive seven hits against the Montreal Militia tonight. This lunatic started the game off by destroying Daniel Daniil in open ice seventeen seconds into the game. Three minutes later, Stephen Wormster would feel the wrath of Carter. Almost two minutes into the second, Carter would line up Radovan Hudec along the boards and absolutely level the poor kid. Four minutes later, Wormster would get in the way of Cameron again, and it ended with Wormster staring at the ceiling again. Fifteen seconds left in the second period, Carter would destroy Viktor Valentine with a massive hip check. After the third period was 20 seconds old, Carter would put down Cody Johansen with a solid hit. With 20 seconds left in the third, Carter would crush Veikka Toivanen for his final hit of the game. Montreal was terrorized by Carter the entire game.
