S42 Championship Week

Task 1:
Esa Anrikkanen (April 20, 1994 - Present) is a professional hockey player who currently plays for the Calgary Dragons in the Simulation Hockey League. Born in Helsinki, Finland in early spring, Anrikkanen has had an affinity for the sport of hockey from a young age. He would move to North America to transition to the professional game by playing for the Detroit Falcons in the SMJHL. He would be drafted in his first year of eligibility by the Calgary Dragons in S18, and has remained with the squad for the entirety of his career. While he hasn't won any personal awards for his play on the ice, he has won five Challenge Cups with the Dragons and his off-ice abilities have landed him a Top GM and four Top Coach awards.

Despite not having won any personal awards in the SHL, he is currently the highest point scorer in the league's history and is one of the highest in total games played in the league. His incredible work ethic and commitment to training have led to one of the most storied hockey careers that the SHL has ever seen.

Task 2:
Someone I feel isn't getting enough attention is Calgary Dragons' defenseman Adam Kaiser. Not only did he put up 15 points in 16 games, but he played a very solid defensive game and I think he was the best defenseman for the Dragons all-around. He not only contributed very well offensively, but he was third on the team in both hits, with 57, and blocked shots, with 20. He was also a +6 rating on the top defense pairing and that's not easy to do when he spent as much time as he did on the ice, playing at average almost half the game every night.

Another unsung hero would be Mikke Laukkanen for the Wolfpack. Even though New England lost the finals, Laukkanen had a great off-season overall and was the better goalie in the match-up despite losing. They finished with a .925 save percentage, 2.38 goals against average and even posted a shutout. They also faced almost a hundred more shots then Hocolate did and was a big reason that the Wolfpack were in the series for as long as they were.

Code:
Word Count: 184

Task 7:
Hunter Jones (S38) Dragons - Jones was an offensive presence in the final series and ended up with a total of five points in the six game series including a big performance in game four with a solid goal and two helpers to help propel the momentum Calgary needed to finish off the series. Over the six games he also threw eighteen shots on net and was a positive rating player on the ice after the first two games of the series. Without Jones turning it up in the finals and with the rest of his great playoff performance the Dragons might not have had the juice to push out the Wolfpack to win the Cup.

Manuel Gotze (S40) Wolfpack - The Wolfpack are severely depleted in the youth department of their squad and it shows when you look at the score sheet. Most of their youngsters barely see any time on the ice and aren't putting up any sort of offensive or defensive contributions. The only real exception to this is Gotze, the S40 draftee. A rookie in the league this season he finished in the middle of the Wolfpack in scoring through the off-season and had a solid finals performance. He put up two goals and a helper in the six games along with seven shots, of that four came in game six where he really tried to help keep New England alive in the series. What stood out more was his play without the puck, as he imposed his will physically and tallied fifteen hits in the finals. A great two-way threat who gained some invaluable experience for a rookie, look for Gotze to be a force around the league in the future.

TASK FOUR: PMd

TASK NINE: PMd

TASK ONE:
(S24) LW - Patrikov Bure
Patrikov Bure is a professional hockey player in the SHL. Born in Vancouver, Canada, but playing for the Russian National Team through family ties, Bure declared for the SMJHL Draft in S23, being drafted by his hometown SMJHL team, the Vancouver Whalers, at 25th overall. After his rookie SMJHL season, he was drafted by the Winnipeg at 24th overall and signed a 3-year deal with the team. After spending two more seasons in Juniors, winning the Four Star Cup once in two finals appearances, later to be named to the Whalers Hall of Fame in S35 after scoring 136 points in 140 games, Bure was called up to the SHL and signed a 1-year extension with Winnipeg. The following season he was traded to the New England Wolfpack, where he has played since S27, winning three Challenge Cups in five finals appearances. He currently sits only 4 points from being the Wolfpack's all-time leading scorer.

TASK SIX:
TASK SEVEN:
For the Wolfpack, the best young performer was (S40) Manuel Gotze. In his first season of SHL action, he stepped into a much larger role than many would have expected, and in the playoffs he added some key goals for New England. In 18 games, he managed to find the net 6 times, which was good for 3rd best on the whole team. In the Finals, he managed a solid 2 goals and 1 assist in the 6 games, which more than good enough for such a young player.

For the Dragons, it's a bit more difficult as they have several young players playing large roles, but I'd have to go with (S38) Hunter Jones. In the whole of the playoffs, he managed to be a point per game player and managed a .93 P/20. In the Finals, he managed a great 5 points in 6 games, including a 3 point game in the pivotal game 4 in New England to tie the series.

TASK ONE: In at least 150 words, write an introductory paragraph for a potential Wikipedia article about one of the players in the finals. Include draft season and the teams they have played for.

Joe Kurczewski: Joseph “Joe” Kurczewski is an SHL Center for the Calgary Dragons. He was born in Buffalo, NY. He played for the St. Louis Scarecrows in the SMJHL after being selected 22nd overall by St. Louis in the S30 SMJHL Entry Draft. In the S31 SHL Draft, the Calgary Dragons selected Kurczewski 12th overall, in the first round. Kurczewski has won Challenge Cups with Calgary in S32, S40, and now S42, the most recent season in the SHL. He was named MVP of the league by both players and the committee in S40. He is the current Dragons’ Captain. He has been the General Manager of the St. Louis Scarecrows since S34, having lead the team to the Four Star Cup in S39. As if that weren’t enough, Kurczewski is also the Federation Head of Team USA, taking over in S32. Kurczewski has helped that team win Gold Medals three times so far, the first golds in USA IIHF history. (161)

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S42 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

The unsung hero in Calgary’s run to the S42 Challenge Cup comes from the blue line. Dragons defenseman Casey Creller had a heck of a playoffs for himself this go around. Creller would rack up 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) in the 16 games the Dragons played. He lead the team in shot blocks, registering 24 blocks. He was also a bit physical, getting 45 hits. But perhaps most impressively, three of his goals were on the power play. But all four of his playoff goals were game winners! Creller’s 4 GWGs were huge (obviously) for the Dragons, as no other player for Calgary had more than 1. Creller would finish with less points than fellow defenseman Augustus, Maksimov, and Kaiser, but his timely scoring and knack for getting the job done when it mattered most is why the Dragons are holding the cup and Casey Creller is the unsung hero of the playoffs. TASK SEVEN: Which young player on each team will have (or, if you're doing this later, has had) the biggest impact in the Cup finals, and why? Must mention at least one player S38 or younger per team. Must be at least 150 words.

We’ll start in Calgary with the “young gun” from the Dragons growing into a really key player during this season’s cup run. Season 38’s Hunter Jones had a breakout party of sorts this playoff season. Jones would score 16 points in 16 games, albeit 14 assists, finishing 6th in playoff scoring, tied with Oisin Fletcher. He actually struggled with his own scoring (shooting only 5.13%) but the plays he made helping set up line mate Mike Izzy were nothing short of lovely. People will remember Kurczewski and Izzy’s dominance this post-season, but the play of Hunter Jones is a big reason why the cup is in Calgary. In New England, Manuel Gotze had a nice playoff himself. The rookie out of Colorado gave New England a physical presence, registering 57 hits. He also had 9 points, 6 of which were goals, which gave him a nice blend of two way play as the Wolfpack made the run to the finals. (160)

TASK ONE: In at least 150 words, write an introductory paragraph for a potential Wikipedia article about one of the players in the finals. Include draft season and the teams they have played for.

Roman Augustus, born October 19th, 1996 in Pensacola, Florida, is an American professional ice hockey defenseman, currently an alternate captain for the Calgary Dragons of the Simulation Hockey League (SHL). Augustus was selected 10th overall in the S36 SHL Entry Draft by the Dragons and went on to win the Challenge Cup in S40 and S42. He set career highs in points, assists, and +/- in the S41 Season. Prior to playing for Calgary, Augustus was a member of the St. Louis Scarecrows of the Simulation Junior Hockey League (SMJHL). He shoots left handed and credits Reddit for getting him into hockey. He wears the number 22 and is a strapping 6'6", 235 lbs. Many scouts describe him as a Two-Way Defensemen because of his scoring prowess, and say that his strengths are scoring, defense, and skating, while his only weakness is checking. He is also a member of the league's Head Office.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S42 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

The unsung hero of the S42 playoffs is defenseman Ostap Maksimov of the Calgary Dragons. Although he ranks just 8th in points, with 13, for the Calgary Dragons in these Challenge Cup Playoffs, his 13 points have all come via assists. That total ranks 3rd on the team, only behind Kurczewski and Hunter Jones, both of whom are forwards. Yes, the classic unselfish hero doing what is necessary to earn a ring while getting none of the praises of a Mike Izzy or Joe Kurczewski. Not only has Ostap Maksimov contributed 13 assists, he has contributed 5 of them on power play opportunities specifically. It is probably a tired cliche in hockey that good teams convert on those chances and bad teams don't. Maksimov has provided a huge [i]assist[i] in terms of helping the Calgary Dragons convert on their power plays, ranking second on the team in power play assists and 4th in power play points.

Given my answer to the previous task, I suppose there is no way I can say anyone but Ostap Maksimov has been Calgary's most impactful young skater. In addition to his 13 assists and 5 power play points, Maksimov has been a key asset on the Dragons' penalty kill lines that killed an outstanding 85% of opponent power plays throughout the playoffs. Only Roman Augustus played as many power play kill minutes as a defenseman for the team so Maksimov really earned some recognition. He also blocked 14 shots.

For the New England Wolfpack, the most impactful young player has been Manuel Gotze. As a rookie in his first playoffs this season, Gotze put up some really impressive numbers. He added 6 goals, 3 assists, had a +/- of 2 when nearly half the team was negative, and was extremely efficient with his shooting, converting on 17.7% of his shots, which trailed only a player who did not even play in some of the matches.

TASK ONE: In at least 150 words, write an introductory paragraph for a potential Wikipedia article about one of the players in the finals. Include draft season and the teams they have played for.

Roman Augustus is a professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Calgary Dragons of the Simulation Hockey League (SHL). Augustus was born on October 16th, 1996 in Pensacola, Florida. Augustus was originally selected 24th overall by the St. Louis Scarecrows in the S35 SMJHL entry draft. He would quickly prove that being selected in the 3rd round would be a steal for the Scarecrows. Just 1 season later, Augustus would be selected 10th overall by the Calgary Dragons in the S36 SHL entry draft. Since being selected by the Dragons, Augustus has been name an alternate captain for the squad and is continuing to develop into an elite blue liner. Augustus has already won 2 Challenge Cups with the Dragons and was the team's top scoring defenseman in their most recent championship. Augustus stands at 6'6 and weighs 235 pounds which makes him a giant out on the ice. Despite his hulking size, Augustus is smooth skating and has a wicked shot making him a threat in all areas of the ice.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S42 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

The Calgary Dragons have almost a magical property in which while they are always ushering in new players they manage to stay successful in part due to some of the legends that they have on their roster. One legend that is still on Calgary's roster who might not quite be in the spot light anymore is Randy Randleman. Randleman has been a mainstay on the Dragons for a long long time and is still managing to produce. I am writing my CW late so the playoffs are already over, but Randleman still managed to have an impressive 15 points in 16 games played. He was definitely helped by the fact that he was shooting just over 15%. While he might not be one of the main guys on the roster anymore as that has been taken over by guys like Joe Kurczewski and Mike Izzy in terms of forwards at least, but his .87 p/20 cannot be ignored because it's depth that wins championships.

Several people have already mentioned the 2 players that I am going to talk about in this specific task, but the 2 players that I think fit this bill are Hunter Jones of the Calgary Dragons and Manuel Gotze of the New England Wolfpack. Hunter Jones finished the Challenge Cup Playoffs as a point per game player scoring 16 points in 16 games. 5 of those 16 points came against the Wolfpack and 3 of those 5 came in game 4 which was a pivotal moment in the series as the Dragons tied it up 2-2 after dropping the first 2 games. Manuel Gotze also had an impressive finals scoring 3 points in the 6 game series. Not quite the statistics that Jones put up, but Gotze is still young and has a lot of time to develop. Including the finals, Gotze potted 6 goals which is an impressive feat for the youngster from New England.

Task 1:

Piotr Czerkawski, born April 4th, 1998 in a small hospital in Radomsko, Poland, is a Right Winger that currently plays for the New England Wolfpack in the Simulation Hockey League. Standing at 6’2 and 220 pounds, he is quite the man to see on the ice. He was Drafted 8th Overall in the Season 40 SMJHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Militia. The Following Season, he was drafted 3rd Overall by the New England Wolfpack. He brings quite the work load to the New England Wolfpack, as his agent and trainer, @majesiu is known throughout multiple leagues, developing players in both Football and Baseball as well. Piotr brings a uniqueness to the Wolfpack, being such a skilled individual, and a young man who will continue to develop into his body and size, and become a great winger, it is destined for him to live up to the New England way of life and continue to improve.

(156 Words)

Task 2:

My unsung hero so far in the playoffs has to be none other than New England Wolfpack’s own Piotr Czerkawski. Yes, yes, I know, he only played in 6 games for the Wolfpack, but in those 6 games played, he scored two goals on 7 shots. He led the whole league in the playoffs in shot percentage at 28.57%. Some would point out that, quite possibly, since he took so few shots in so few games that he doesn’t deserve to be the unsung hero, but in my eyes he is. If he had more time, played more games, who would have known what he could have done. Even on top of that, in the 6 games he played, he tallied 9 total hits, which isn’t bad for a man who is not really a hitter. He only saw the ice for 18 minutes a game in those 6 games, but who knows, if he had more time he could have helped bring the cup to New England.

(168 words)

Task 4: PM'd

Task 7:

Hunter Jones had one of the biggest impacts for the Calgary Dragons in the Finals. Hunter Jones’ stats didn’t jump off the pages, but he had quite a respectable series against the New England Wolfpack. He scored two goals, had three assists and totaled five points. For a young winger, that is something to be proud about. He had a three point game in game four, tallying one goal and two assists. Hunter Jones, for being a season 38 winger, had quite the impact. He has been in the league for only four seasons, and now has a cup under his name. Hunter Jones continues to bring the fire, and is an integral part of Calgary’s core moving forward, and if he can keep this up he will see more of a workload in the following seasons to try and bring more cups to the cold north of Calgary, the Dragons have a good young player to continue to watch develop.

TASK ONE
Oisin Fletcher (born September 30th, S35 in Quebec City, Quebec) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and alternate captain of the New England Wolfpack of the Simulation Hockey League (SHL) wearing jersey #36. Feltcher spent three season in the Simulation Junior Hockey League (SMJHL) playing for the Halifax Raiders where he spent his first season as alternate captain and his second season and third season as captain. Since making the jump to the SHL Fletcher has become an alternate captain for the New England Wolfpack. Fletcher's first four seasons for the Wolfpack were good seasons, but in S42 he made the jump to becoming a top SHL player. He was unanimously named to the first all star team and was integral in getting the team to their first Challenge Cup Finals appearance in over six seasons. Fletcher was drafted into the SMJHL in S35 at 26th overall and into the SHL in S36 at 3rd overall.

TASK TWO
The unsung hero of the S42 playoffs is far and away Otis B. Driftwood. It's hard to step onto a championship team as a rookie and not be a liability, but Driftwood found a way to not only be a plus player, he also made the most of his time when he was on the ice. During his 15 minutes a game he picked up 26 hits which was enough for 5th on the Calgary Dragons. He also managed to be the only rookie on the Dragons that wasn't minus as he was +4 throughout the playoffs. That may not sound very huge, but I'm a big believer in depth being one of the most important parts of any team. Joe Kurczewski and Mike Izzy are always going to put up 20+ points in a 15+ game playoff run, but how many rookies can you put on the ice and know that they aren't going to be a defensive liability? That's what really makes a championship team in my opinion. Reliable depth that you know is going to come off the ice with your team still having a chance to win. And laying the body on the opponent to wear them down a little isn't too bad either.

TASK SEVEN
The young player on the Calgary Dragons that had the biggest impact is Ostap Maksimov. Maksimov is a S39 player that distributes the puck better than any player I have seen in ages. although he could do well to shoot the puck a little more, he was able to get 13 assists in his 16 games in the playoffs and was plus 7. He's the perfect role player for a team that is so loaded up with snipers currently, and you can expect him to grow into one of the Dragons' top stars in the future.
The young player on the New England Wolf Pack that made the biggest impact is Manuel Gotze. Gotze is a S40 player who came into the league as a pure sniper. Through 18 games he scored 6 goals and 3 assists (most assists likely came off of his rebounds) and he has a bit of a mean streak to him as well with 15 PIMs. Gotze earned the trust of his coach before the playoffs and found a way onto the team's 2nd line where he set up shop and went to work. Expect him to be one of the top Wolfpack players very soon.

TASK ONE: In at least 150 words, write an introductory paragraph for a potential Wikipedia article about one of the players in the finals. Include draft season and the teams they have played for.

Esa Anrikkanen is a Finnish professional hockey player for the Calgary Dragons in the Simulation Hockey League. Anrikkanen is one of the longest tenured players in league history, spending the entirety of his career with the Dragons. Throughout his career, Anrikkanen has proven to be a winner with 5 Challenge Cups and 3 IIHF Gold Medals to his name. Before Anrikkanen came to the SHL, he played for the Detroit Falcons in his major juniors career. Esa Anrikkanen is also a Subway franchisee, citing his love of Chicken Parmesan sandwiches as his reason for the business venture. During the offseason he resides at his New England estate with his partner, Slappy McDoodle, who also played in the SHL. They spend their freetime raising and training Golden Retrievers by the hundreds. It is rumored that the American Express Black Card was invented to suit the needs of the Finnish star hockey player.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S42 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

Hunter Jones is my choice for the unsung hero of these Season 42 Playoffs. The young forward found himself thrust into a position that same may have thought would be too much for him to handle. However, the Finnish youngster scored 16 points in 16 games en route to winning the Challenge Cup. In addition to his offensive production (thanks to his playmaking abilities), Jones didn't commit a single minor penalty throughout the postseason. However, I think the most interesting stat to note is his shooting percentage, a lowly 5.13%. Had Jones had just a bit more luck, he might have been able to break 20 points, which just goes to show how much he managed to do for this Dragons team outside of finding the back of the net. The Dragons hope to have a newfound star in this one, and they could desperately use one to replace the aging Randleman and Anrikkanen.

TASK SEVEN: Which young player on each team will have (or, if you're doing this later, has had) the biggest impact in the Cup finals, and why? Must mention at least one player S38 or younger per team. Must be at least 150 words.

Hunter Jones had the biggest impact as a young player for the Calgary Dragons. His playmaking abilities were just tremendous throughout the 16 games they played and his on-ice vision allowed linemate Mike Izzy to reach new heights. It's certainly valid to wonder if the Dragons would have been able to win the Challenge Cup without the major contributions from the young Finnish winger. Going forward, the Dragons are hoping that Jones can follow in the footsteps of their aging Finnish powerhouse, Esa Anrikkanen.

Manuel Gotze had a sizable impact for the New England Wolfpack this year. In 18 games played, Gotze potted 6 goals and boasted one of the highest shooting percentages on his team. He may not have been deployed in a defensive role, but he still managed to play a physical game, dishing out 57 hits while only taking 11. If the Wolfpack are to have any hopes of replicating their Cinderella run to the Finals, Gotze is going to have to be a big part of that.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S42 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

You know, with Calgary winning the Cup, there seems to be many standouts. 10 seasons ago, it would be easy to name Randy Ranleman the MVP of the league and the finals. Nowadays, on his farewell tour, there are new stars in Calgary. But, I believe Randy Randleman should still get some recognition. He's held down that 2nd line winger spot and helped Mike Izzy dominate as he always does. So while Mike Izzy and Joe Kurczewski get all the hyp, Randleman goes under the radar. That's why he's my unsung hero. Not to mention he scored 2 goals in the final game to win the Cup. Throw in 6 shots in the final game and we all know that we were seeing some vintage Randleman. When a legend like Randleman who's been around for so long can still contribute (and arguably make a bigger impact than both Izzy and Joe in the final game) to help win the Cup, you know you've got a future Hall of Famer on your hands. It's weird to be a young player in this era because sometimes we fail to realize how good some of these legends are.

TASK SEVEN: Which young player on each team will have (or, if you're doing this later, has had) the biggest impact in the Cup finals, and why? Must mention at least one player S38 or younger per team. Must be at least 150 words.

Calgary: My young player of choice is going to be Ostap Maksimov. And he's probably going to be a pretty popular choice to write about for one major reason: he's really frickin good. A S39 draftee, he's had some good seasoninig in the minors, but this season, especially the post season, he's lit it up. In 16 playoff games, Maksimov has 13 points while playing some solid second line D-pair minutes. Sometimes it takes a while for young players to earn good minutes in the big, but Ostap has stepped in on a really good team and he's contrbuted well.

New England: The have less young players, but Manuel Goetz still managed to contribute for the New England Wolfpack playoff run. He scored 0.5 points per game, netting 6 goals over the 18 playoff games. While playing time was limited, he made it count when he got on the ice.

TASK ONE: In at least 150 words, write an introductory paragraph for a potential Wikipedia article about one of the players in the finals. Include draft season and the teams they have played for.

Joe Kurczewski (born July 4th, 1988) is an American professional hockey player currently playing for the Calgary Dragons of the Western Conference of the Simulation Hockey League. He started his junior career by being drafted to the St. Louis Scarecrows 22nd overall in the S30 SMJHL draft. He was immediately named an assistant captain for that Scarecrow team and was then drafted by the Calgary Dragons 12th overall in the S31 SHL draft. Since then he's won the S32, S39, and the S42 Challenge Cups with the Dragons and has accumulated a vast number of trophies and scoring titles. Most notably, he won the S40 Ron Mexico and Sarmad Khan trophies as the league MVP as voted by the Awards Committee and by his fellow players. He is continually among the league leaders in scoring, setting a career high in S40 with 66 points, but his real strength is consistency. He's scored more than 40 points per season 7 straight years since his sophomore season.

Oisin Fletcher is one of the new veteran actually playing for the New England Wolfpack. Drafted during the 36th season of the SHL, Oisin always was an player recognised for his skills and determination to promote hockey across the globe. He recently lost the S42 Challenge Cup with New England’s team.

Born in the historic city of Quebec, in the province of Quebec, Canada, Oisin Fletcher came from a long family of intellectuals. However, he did a really good impression during his career in the SHMJL with the Halifax Raiders, winning the four cup in S37. He then made his name as a podcast host for a good number of seasons with different collaborator between season and held one of the best mediatic presence in the last decade. Finally, he was drafted in New England where he continued to play until today. Oisin Fletcher is a man of many talents, working between the games and the training as an officer for the league.

TASK SEVEN: Which young player on each team will have (or, if you're doing this later, has had) the biggest impact in the Cup finals, and why? Must mention at least one player S38 or younger per team. Must be at least 150 words.

Having followed a little his evolution during his time in the SJMHL, I think Ostap Maksimov is the youngest player in the Dragon to have a great impact on the team. During the regular season, he managed to do 29 points as a defenseman and blocked 49 shots. With a final +/- score of +14, his presence on the ice paid a lot for the team. He did a really good performance during playoff and he’s one of the reason Calgary have the chance to bring that cup in town.

For the other side, I will side with other experts and I chose Manuel Gotze. He was a really aggressive recruit and his +/- score of -16 during regular seasons shows. However, having scored 10 goals as a recruit with less than a thousand minutes on the clock is impressive for a new player. He’ll have to work on his defence but he brings a great hope the Wolfpack and mmaybe a chance to get their revenge next season.
