SMJHL S43 Game 41: Detroit Falcons vs. Halifax Raiders
Link DETROIT FALCONS 3-2 (SO) HALIFAX RAIDERS Three Stars: 1 - David Fantobens (DET) 2 - Leshaun King (HAL) 3 - Craig Finley (HAL) In this match-up between the Detroit Falcons and the Halifax Raiders, it was a close battle in the end, despite a high flying Falcons squad in an offensive 1st Period, ultimately ending in the shootout in Detroit's favour. 1st Period: In the 1st Period, the Halifax Raiders got off to a quick start, speeding into the Falcons' end and getting a shot on net. 12 seconds into the game, Vince Rieper broke in and threw the puck into an empty side, which Cedric Robinson batted away with his stick. Code: 0:01 of 1st period - Kristof Kovacs wins face-off versus Dank Boija in neutral zone. A few minutes later, Detroit players Chuck Crutchfield and Pingy Pingu had a tag team in Halifax's zone, missing the net a whole 4 times, blowing chances before the Raiders could clear it. Code: 3:03 of 1st period - Shot by Chuck Crutchfield. Then that brings us to the 4:47 mark of the 1st Period, where the Falcons won the draw in the Raiders' zone. After some nice cycling plays, David Fantobens scored to bring this game to 1-0 for the Detroit Falcons. Code: 4:47 of 1st period - Shot by David Fantobens. Halfway through the period, the Detroit Falcons were putting on pressure in offensive zone for a solid minute. They got off some shots, missing the net a bunch of times, but in the end, Kata Vilde made a save, covering it up and things changed from there. Halifax's Mr. Faceoffs won the faceoff, battled and the Raiders brought the puck up the ice. They put on the pressure in Detroit's zone, and Xavier Paquette was forced to ice the puck. On the ensuing faceoff, Leshaun King won the draw, the Raiders kept it in the zone cycling, and out of nowhere Craig Finley ripped a shot top corner and brought this game to a score of 1-1. Code: 10:51 of 1st period - Icing by Xavier Paquette. With under 6 minutes left in the period, the Detroit Falcons were putting on some offense. They could not seem to get the puck to the net for a good minute, with Halifax blocking shots and Detroit missing nets. The puck was brought the other way where Vince Rieper and Kristof Kovacs both had a shot on goal and missed, then Justin Siddals took the puck in the opposite direction. The puck was battled for in the neutral zone and ultimately, Siddals was then sprung on a breakaway! Justin Siddals potted it home and brought the game to 2-1 Detroit. Code: 14:15 of 1st period - Shot by Papa Huligans. Kata Vilde then made a few more saves in the final minute to keep this score at 2-1 Detroit, and the period would end that way. The shots were 12-5 in favour of Detroit. 2nd Period: The 2nd Period was a more even period, with similar shots and good saves by both goaltenders. Fast forward to halfway through the 2nd period, and Detroit had the puck in Halifax's zone. Wolfhard Richter got off a shot that Kata Vilde swallowed up easily. Code: 10:44 of 2nd period - Hippo Passamus wins face-off versus Leshaun King in Detroit Falcons zone. After the next faceoff, Vince Rieper won the draw and the Raiders brought the puck up the ice, where Rieper passed it to Oliver Kovacs who beat Robinson, but not the post! Code: 11:29 of 2nd period - Shot by Oliver Kovacs. The play continued there in the zone where Rieper looked to have an open net but Cedric Robinson made a big save to keep the score 2-1 Falcons. For the rest of the period, a fuck ton of missed shots were had, and shots were blocked as well. The period ended with 6 shots a piece and we headed to the 3rd with Detroit still up 2-1. 3rd Period: The 3rd Period was more of the same kind of effort from both squads. Shots were even and this was Halifax's chance to try and tie this game up. 7:36 into the 3rd, Halifax was bringing on the heat. Leshaun King won a draw in Detroit's zone, and they were feeling it. Play was a little sloppy by the Falcons in their own end and the Raiders were able to intercept, get the puck to Leshaun King who proceeded to score. 2-2 game in the 3rd! Code: 7:36 of 3rd period - Leshaun King wins face-off versus Pingy Pingu in Detroit Falcons zone. At 9:54, both teams took minor penalties and this brought us to 4on4 hockey. Code: 9:54 of 3rd period - Minor Penalty to Crush Cile for Holding Stick. Halifax took momentum after their tying goal and were putting on major pressure. A few missed nets, and a couple of big rebounds by Cedric Robinson were given up, and Poopity Scoop had to ice the puck. Nothing came of it, but those were scary moments for Detroit. Code: 10:16 of 3rd period - Shot by Leshaun King. Neither team was able to score for the rest of the period, and shots were even at 10-10 each, then this game headed to overtime. OT Period: Overtime was also uneventful, where neither team had a shot on goal and each were blocking shots and missing nets. Shootout Period: Code: 5:00 of 1st overtime period - Penalty Shot by Xavier Paquette for Detroit Falcons. The only goal of the shootout was a slick move by David Fantobens to get it past Kata Vilde and win the game for the Detroit Falcons. Final score was, as stated at the top, 3-2 Detroit Falcons in a shootout.

Three Stars of the Game
First Star - David Fantobens (Detroit Falcons) Fantobens gets the nod for first star of the game tonight scoring the games opener along with a goal in the shootout. He put up four shots in just over 19 minutes of play. Second Star - Leshaun King (Halifax Raiders) San Francisco Pride’s first overall draft pick last season earns the second star with 2 point night – a goal and an assist. He was also a beast on the spot winning 14 of his 21 tries in a little over 21 minutes of game time. Unfortunately he couldn’t beat Detroit’s Cedric Robinson in the shootout. Third Star - Craig Finley (Halifax Raiders) Finley earns tonight’s third star putting up huge minutes and was good for a goal as well.

Prospect Watch
Mister McCarty, Kristers Dzelme, Bernard Brendorowski (2 PIM), Rainbow Dash, Mikael Choybuk, Ray Bork Waffles Man, Ola Wagstrom, Franz Cooper, Riley Rush, Poopity Scoop, Chuck Crutchfield, Aaron Freakin Rome Very quiet game by the assorted prospects in this one. Combined, all 13 prospects managed a stat line of 0 goals, 0 assists and 0 points. None of the Falcon rookies even managed a shot on net or a penalty, strange considering their usual involvement in on-ice events. For the Raiders, only Kristers Dzelme had a shot on net and Bernard Brendorowski made a bleep on the radar with a single first-period minor penalty (which was killed off without the Falcons converting). Weak prospect game all around.

The goalies were put to the test tonight as not only did we get to overtime but that solved nothing so we went to a 3 round shoot out.
In net tonight: Cedric Robinson - Detroit Falcons 19/21 (0.905) W 3/3 in SO Kata Vilde - Halifax Raiders 26/28 (0.929) OTL 2/3 in SO Kata Vilde made 10 big saves for Halifax in the 1st period as the Raiders took two penalties and Detroit was all over them early in the game. It could have been 4-0 in the first easily but Kata was very sharp. After the first period the shots were even the rest of the game. In the second they were 6/6 and in the third 10/10. No team managed a shot in the 5 minute OT. Cedric Robinson ending up stealing the win for his team tonight as he made 3 saves in the shootout to stone the Raiders and earn the Falcons the win. Overall he had an easier night as the first was really dominated by his team but he came up huge when it mattered most. He is the Goalie of the Game.

IIHF Federation Head Old Man Tonight's Zero Factor, Sponsored by Coke Zero
Ola Wagstrom came into this game with high expectations, for himself and for his team. And while his team pulled out a nail-biter of a win in the long run, Mister Wagstrom himself had a less than stellar performance this evening. A third line left winger, Ola touted nearly fourteen minutes of ice time, with a minute and sixteen seconds of that on the powerplay. During this time he unfortunately believed that he was on 'Who's Line Is It Anyway?' and that the points didn't matter. Zero goals, assists, plus-minus, and official shots on net, though he did shoot five times, he forgot his contact lenses this evening and missed wide on every occasion. To make matters worse, he lost his sense of color this evening as well, turning the puck over seven times, all but one of these on errant passes that came nowhere close to his actual teammates. His one bright spot is, that in his colorblind state, he did manage four steals, likely passes he thought was meant for him anyhow. This is why Ola Wagstrom is tonight's Zero Factor. And remember, zero sugars, zero calories, zero factor, Coke Zero.

Poopity Scoop here, defenseman for the Detroit Falcons. Well this was a nice game. We dangled and dabbled all around, leading to a road win off in Halifax. The start of the game was sad though. I don't know how it happened but we gave up an early early goal like whaaaaat man. It was like we weren't even ready to play yet. But we strapped up and didn't let it hurt us. Dave Fantobeans did his thing with a nice goal and then Siddals gave us a 2-1 lead after the first. We cooled down a bit from there, lost the lead, but we stayed strong. And when it came time for the shootout, Cedric did his than and stopped em all while Fantobeans scored to win it!
