Weekend Funtime: Pre Series Analysis
#61

The Montreal Militia will continue their underdog prowess that we've seen since I've joined this site. they will smash Colorado once again, even after trading away SHL #1 pick Rafe Ulrich. Harvey Danger will not be able to play for them because of "rules" even though the Renegades season is over, but they'll win anyways.

Montreal Militia vs. Colorado Raptors

How do you see that match up playing out?

After a painful series last season, the Colorado Raptors will be eager for payback in this rematch and I believe that with one extra year of growth under their belts, they will have an excellent chance. The Raptors struggled a bit towards the end of the regular season but were still the better team if you look at the overall season. While it won't be easy, I'd expect them to come out victorious with a 4-2 series win.

KEL - DET

Kelowna made a lot of great trades at the deadline, but one in particular will be the X factor against the Falcons. The addition of Leshaun King and his nose for the net will be a pivotal piece of Kelowna's deep run this year. He demonstrated his scoring touch on Halifax the past years and now settled into the Kelowna powerhouse, it is almost certain he will bring the firepower that will push the Knights not only past the Falcons, but most likely to a Four Star Cup.

Dragons vs Jets

I expect this matchup to be pretty interesting, however I think the Winnipeg Jets will win in about 5-6 games. This is because the Jets have the statistical advantage which is pretty significant. Winnipeg also has done much better in the regular season, with 31 wins vs Calgary's mere 22. I also expect there to be mostly big wins for the Jets with a couple close games. I expect Jason Vissier to be the star of the series, also with Corey Beans, as they have shown some impressive stats this season.

"Bring back Pingy Pingu Lunga Gumba esq. And I mean bring him all the way back. I want every thread on this forum that involves even a modicum of salt to get razed to the ground by our most notorious shitposting penguin. I want every thunderdome to drown in ABAGABA spam and a signature that doesn't end. I want the userbase of this fine league to cower in terror, slinking about the forums and making as little noise as possible for fear of attracting the Shitpost Slenderman. When some poor immigrant from the NFL sim blunders into the forum and makes an angry post about how his player slipped to the early second round despite having done ALL the rookie tasks(!), let the veteran survivalists stare in horror and pity while the newbie rages. They will know it is only a matter of time before @Pingy Pingu descends upon his post like a ravening wolf and obliterates his tread, reducing it to a radioactive waste-dump of unintelligible spam. They will not interfere, for Pingy is our immune system. Because he can take it. Our Dark Knight of Shitposting"

The Hamilton Steelhakws will sweep the West Kendall Platoon in their first round matchup. Why? Because it's the Platoon in the playoffs. The Steelhawks have underperformed in the playoffs the past few seasons, but I think this might just be third year.

Lightning Jones is going to be a breakout star of this playoffs. The series with Seattle will be his first step to stardom, as they lack the necessary goaltending to stop him. Seattle allowed the most goals against of any playoff team this season. Jones only put up 3 points this season despite averaging nearly 16 minutes a game, but he plays on a potent powerplay with players who will take precedent over him in Joshua Woodcroft and Yuri Boyka Jr. When it comes to the playoffs, it's also someone who plays those more minor roles that steps up in the nitty gritty of it all. In this case, Jones is the guy who will hold his ground in front to cash in on rebounds and second chance opportunities and will be a forgotten or unwatched part of the line-up who has the skill necessary to really hurt a team caught puck-watching.

Kelowna Knights vs. Detroit Falcons

The knights are going to falcon hunting with their absolute star duo second liners King-Rafe. These two mad lads having been getting all the points since they both were sent to Kelowna and playing with each other.

Calgary Dragons vs. Winnipeg Jets

"How do you see that match up playing out?"

This could've easily been the Western Conference Finals IMO, but the regular season results prevented this from happening. Winnipeg has been a powerhouse and cup favorites for several seasons now, but of course Calgary is looking for their back-to-back cup win. It's really hard to pin them against one another here I'll have to give the edge to Calgary. Visser is a complete monster for the Jets along with several other aging vets, but I think Calgary's depth & young talent will push them over the edge in this series.

- What player do you expect to be the difference maker and why?
Dragons vs Jets

I expect Roman Augustus to make a difference in the series/game/whatever this PT is about. Now with a season behind him after transitioning to forward, i expect him to be pretty comfortable in his role and to be able to booster the Dragons offensive.

PS: bring back 15 words pt

I'm very interested to see how the West Kendall Platoon vs Hamilton Steelhawks series plays out.

Hamilton should be favored because they have better skaters, but they have a wildcard. Their rookie goaltender, Geezus Kryyst, is getting his first taste of SHL playoffs. I don't think it is likely that he will win the series for Hamilton, but I do think that he could lose it for them. He was good enough in the regular season, and I think Hamilton has a solid chance of representing the East in the Finals if he can continue to play at that level.

Calgary vs. Winnipeg is as classic a series as you ever see in the SHL. Honestly, I'd take Calgary in this one. The model of consistency for many seasons, they have the playoff juju that no one else has come close to

How do you see that match up playing out?
- The history between the Dragons and Jets should make for a great matchup. I see the series being a close, tough battle going at least 6 games. Both teams are capable of winning on the road, so you should see a back and forth series. Dragons will complete the upset though :D

Is there a surprise player that will step up and play a integral role in their team's victory?
- For the Dragons, Shooter McGavin. He scored a key goal in game 5 OT in last year's finals as a rookie, so it seems like he already has a knack for clutch goals in a limited role. This year he started out slow, but he has been great down the stretch when the games really mattered, and I suspect he'll continue that trend in this round.
- For the Jet, Kyle Kylrad. Seems weird to call an 18 goal scorer a surprise player, but he's often overlooked due to the other great Jets players. He finished 10th in team scoring, but he had 3 GWG and 3 GTG, and also chipped in with 6 powerplay points. Look for him to step up when the top lines get checked.

The Buffalo Stampede are going to roll into Minnesota with a couple goals in mind. The first goal is to advance to the next round for the first time in franchise history. The second goal, and arguably the most important, is to humiliate Wozy.

Kelowna vs Detroit

A player I expect to show up big is my boy Benjamin Blue. With a suspect defense in front of him, he'll need to be at his best, but the former goalie of the year has shown that he is more than capable in the past.

Players that make a difference:

WPG vs CAL

Joe Kurczewski vs Jason Visser

The S31 darlings and lifelong best friends will battle it out once again in the playoffs. Which ever player steps up his game in this series will lead his team to a victory. Visser was the better player in the regular season, however Joe K always shows up big in the playoffs. Should be a doozy.
