Welcome to the PGS of game 35
Detroit Falcons are hosting Halifax Raiders

STARTING ROSTERS
[Image: QIFGAuv.png]

Game 35 brings us to the ice of Detroit Falcons, that are hosting the struggling Halifax Raiders, still looking for their first victory of the season. The home team on the other hand is sitting nice and pretty with 4-2-0 score line. There is a clear favourite for the game, so let's see how this one played out.

1st period

The game has opened up reasonably quickly, with the first goal scored on the first powerplay of the game, only 20 seconds after it started, going to the Detroit's third line center rookie Kyllonen, assisted by Dicks and Skottson. It's Kyllonen's first of the season and of his carrier. The first goal was quickly followed by another, this time scored by Palicka, with assists from Cahill and Olsson not even half a minute after. Halifax, after this quick one-two found some answers though, as their rookie Mattson scored his first of the carrier in under two minutes from Detroit's goals. Assists to this one fall to Morgan and Dash, and for Morgan this is his first point aswell. A lot of rookie action, and a lot of early goals are showing us a potentional quick and high scoring game, and this is confirmed by a third goal of the Falcons. Palicka scores his second, giving a second assist of the night to Skottson and a point to Emerson. After this, the period slowed down a little bit, not having nothing more happen for the rest of it.

In the end, Detroit scored 3 to a single one of Halifax, shot clock is at 15:7 for the home team, aswell as the penalty count with Halifax' Faceoffs taking a late one in the last minute setting it at 2:1 for Falcons.

2nd period

And that penalty on Faceoffs has been punished very early after the first faceoff in the period, this time scored by Skottson from Kyllonen and Dicks. This trio has already given Detroit a PP goal in the first and this goal marks the end of the game for Halifax' goalie McKorsy, that is changed by Willis. The special teams look on point for Falcons when penalty on Reynolds is punished just 13 seconds later by Cooper from Makinen and Passamus. Halifax, however, managed to flash their main weapon, which is a powerplay of their own, and responded to the two goals of Detroit by cutting the lead to 5:2 by a PP goal scored by Choybuk from Montgomery and Faceoffs, and punishing another penalty on Emerson is Slothface from Outlaw and Dash. Halifax however took a few more penalties towards the end of the second and wasn't allowed to score again after cutting down the lead to 5:3 leading into the third.

So, on the period it is even 2:2 for both teams in terms of goals, with Halifax outshooting Detroit 15:10, and being even on the penalties with 3 each.

3rd period

The last period of regulation is considerably quieter than the previous two. The only goal is scored by Halifax, desperatly trying to tie the game, with Dzelme scoring his first of the season from Mouette and Morgan. For Mouette, this is his first carrier point, and Morgan secured a second point of the night for himself. However, Detroit managed to survive the scare, and looked to push the lead to a more comfortable position, however they haven't been able to score until the end of the period, even with a powerplay.

The last period has only a lonely goal from Halifax, but is otherwise dominated by Detroit with 8 shots over the 3 of Halifax and the lone powerplay of the period.

Closing thoughts

In the end, Falcons defeat Raiders 5:4. The final shots are 33 for Detroit, 25 for Halifax, with both clubs using half of their powerplay opportunities, of which Detroit had 6 and Halifax 4. Where Halifax dominated were total hits, 27 to 17 is a big difference in physical presence and shows how Halifax wanted to play this one. The game however had a quick start and where Halifax wasn't ready, Detroit punished hard. Quick two goals to open up a lead never gave Raiders a chance to compete for the victory, even if they tried. In the end though, what could have been a big issue for Detroit was their penalty kill. Halifax is statistically worse than Detroit in this regard by a mile, yet they had the same effectiveness as the killers on the Falcons' side, leaving us to wonder how this game could have turned with Halifax either scoring more in the 5v5, which is a major weakness of theirs contrary to their great PP, or if it would be a blow out with a better performance of Detroit's penalty kill.

However, there is nothing more to be done now, and Halifax is off trying to get their maiden win in the S45 campaign, with Detroit keeping close to the lead of the table and looking to fight for the highest ranks of the league.

3 stars of the game

3rd star: Detroit Falcons' Raino Kyllonen (1G, 1A, 2P, -1, 3 shots)
Raino has been undisputably a important part of this game, giving Detroit a quick lead with great powerplay opportunities. While maybe having a weaker day on his                    defensive side, there are still two points to his name no one will take away.
2nd star: Detroit Falcons' Stolp Skottson (1G, 2A, 3P, -1, 1 shot)
Another key of the powerplay unit, Stolp definitely showed us the strong side of his offensive talent. Again, having seen better defensive play, there is a room for                       improvement of his play, but it is not important tonight, as the victory is theirs nonetheless.
1st star: Detroit Falcons' Mark Palicka (2G, 2A, 4P, +2, 5 shots)
Mark today has shown an absolute monster of a game, coming from Detroit's 4th line center, you can only imagine how happy Detroit's GM is right now thinking about                all of this depth scoring. Incredible performance and a definitely deserved first star for Mark.

Really awesome banner at the top dude!  Well written too.

Hopefully the GIFs and effort make up for lack of breakdown, let me know if not:

MILESTONE ALERT: KRISTOFFER MATSSON FIRST CAREER GOAL, PERRY MORGAN WITH FIRST CAREER ASSIST
Also assisted by Rainbow Dash
9:05 of 1st period - Goal by Kristoffer Matsson - Halifax Raiders : 1 - Detroit Falcons : 2.

Mr. Faceoffs, the legend @NH4JP, started it all with a slick faceoff win as he is known to do:

Perry Morgan, the rookie defenseman @"owenm43", received a poke back to the point from veteran Rainbow Dash @Eggy216, and he kept the puck in the zone, lofting a pass to Kristoffer Matsson:

Kristoffer Matsson @Zema blasted a rocket by Cedrick Robinson for the first goal of his career, and there will be plenty more goals from Matsson you can be sure of that:

These two rookies' firsts were a big highlight for Halifax in the first period.

Comment 2:

INSANE SEQUENCE: MIKE McKORSY MAKES THREE UNBELIEVABLE SAVES

2:49 of 1st period - Kalvins Zvejnieks wins face-off versus Kristers Dzelme in Halifax Raiders zone.

3:08 of 1st period - Nat Emerson is hit by Frank Mouette and loses puck.

3:58 of 1st period - Shot by Marc Palicka.

3:58 of 1st period - Stopped by Mike McKorsy @Flames1848  with a rebound: Marc Palicka busted around the net after retrieving a loose puck.  He thought he had McKorsy beat but the young goalie reached out with a desperation stick paddle and held Palicka off the board

[Image: LikelyEthicalGalapagospenguin-max-1mb.gif]

4:00 of 1st period - Shot by Jimmy Cahill.

4:00 of 1st period - Stopped by Mike McKorsy with a rebound: Jimmy Cahill picked up the puck after McKorsy's robbery with the stick.  Cahill circled the high slot and unleashed a wicked wrist shot, only to be robbed by the wizard McKorsy's glove hand.  The puck did manage to escape McKorsy's glove after unfortunately.  But his best was yet to come.

4:21 of 1st period - Shot by Raino Kyllonen.

4:21 of 1st period - Stopped by Mike McKorsy with a rebound: In perhaps his finest move of the sequence, McKorsy was faced with a streaking Raino Kyllonen in the Halifax zone.  Kyllonen scooped up the loose puck and fired a close shot from below the left circle.  McKorsy made the initial save, and as the puck was rolling into the net he managed to kick the puck in the air to save a sure goal.

And there was much rejoicing!

Comment 3:

JIMMY SLOTHFACE NETS HIS SECOND GOAL OF THE SEASON

13:48 of 2nd period - Minor Penalty to Nat Emerson for Goalie Interference. Halifax looks to strike on the power play for the second time in the game.

14:23 of 2nd period - Shot by Clifton Outlaw @theshinymew64
[Image: Artturi+Lehkonen+Colorado+Avalanche+v+Mo...G9F4cl.jpg]
(apologies y'all have some young guys, tough to find just a shooting GIF!)

14:23 of 2nd period - Shot Misses the Net.
14:25 of 2nd period - Shot by Jimmy Slothface.
14:25 of 2nd period - Goal by Jimmy Slothface - Halifax Raiders : 3 - Detroit Falcons : 5.

Rainbow Dash set up Clifton Outlaw for a one time shot from the high slot, but Outlaw's shot barely missed the net.  The puck bounced around the boards and came outside of the Detroit zone.  Halifax's Jimmy Slothface retrieved the puck and built up speed going back into the Detroit zone.  Joined by Outlaw who drove the net hard allowing Slothface to skate one on one with a Detroit defender, Slothface displayed some crafty stickhandling with a between the legs move that gave him enough room to release a shot into the short side of the Detroit net.  This marked back to back goals on the power play for the Halifax Raiders, but the team was ultimately unable to complete the miracle comeback.

Gameday 9 Game 35

This Game was played on the 3rd of January and the Halifax Raiders had to travel to the Motorcity Detroit to play the Falcons. Another high scoring game in the SMJHL and the Goalies MikeMcKorsy , Justin Willis (both Halifax) and Cedric Robinson (Detroit) had much work this evening. A poor period by Mike McKorsy gets him only 20:50 Minutes of IceTime. After this TOI he got pulled by temporary General Manager @StamkosFan and Justin Willis from then stopped the pucks for the Raiders. McKorsy could only stop 4 of 18 shots in the timeframe he played and hat a Sv% from under 0,800. Much to work on for the young german goalie!

Karl's Stars

1st star - Maxime Bouchard Armada - While the sim seems to put extra value on goals I like to recognize the delicious sauce pass as much as the full wind up slapper. Maxime finished the game with 2 assists, factoring in on both of the Armada's goals in this one. Maxime also collected 3 shots and a 1 shot block.
2nd star - Mika Mayfield Armada - Much like the previously mentioned Bouchard, Mika Mayfield also tallied a pair of apples, factoring in to both goals. Mika also led the team in shots on goal with 4 and finished 1 check for a single hit.
3rd star - Daniel Smeb Raptors - In the dying minutes of the 1st period Daniel nearly put this one out of reach for the hometown Raptors as he scored what would be the second marker for the visiting Armada. While the Armada would recover Daniel tried his best, leading the team with 4 shots on goal.

Thanks for the sig ragnar!

As we can see, Halifax dominated the physical game here, having 10 more hits than their opponent. It must be noted that as of this write up, Perry Morgan has the most recorded hits in a single game that has so far been featured in the SMJHL Hit Tracker! Congrats Perry for being a dominating physical presence on the ice. Back to the game here - despite Halifax having 10 more hits than Detroit, they still lost the game by a single goal. We can also see that Halifax had 13 of their 19 skaters participate in hits (68.4%), whereas Detroit had 9 of their 19 skaters involved in the physical aspects of the game (47.4%).

One possible speculation of the loss for Halifax is they simply took more penalties than their opponent (12 vs 8) and Detroit was able to capitalize on 3 of their 6 powerplays in the game. It was also a bad game for Mike McKorsy of the Halifax Raiders, who had a 77.8% save after 18 shots. He was pulled 50 seconds into the second period and replaced with backup Justin Willis, who stopped 14 out of 15 shots for the remainder of the game. Detroit was also able to outshoot Halifax by a total of 8 shots despite getting knocked around all game by the majority of the Halifax team.

The Smeb Report:
The only smeb playing in this game was the smally one; kit. He came into the game as one of the top rookie scorers in the league, and was looking to replicate his early success. Unfortunately he wasnt able to but that wasnt from a lack of trying. He had four shots on net, and despite being a little guy he had two big hits in the game. Only playing a little over twelve minutes he was one of the highest volume shooters in this whole game, and he was even able to win the one faceoff he had to take as a result of kyllonen getting kicked out of the circle. Good effort for the little smeb here, and the results will come eventually

4th line? More like 1st line!
The amazing performance of Marc Palicka can not go unnoticed - the 4th line center managed to score two goals wtih 12 minutes played. Mind you - 3 of those minutes were served on the penalty-kill, and the Detroit center managed to get off 5 shots on goal on his 9 even strength minutes of play, for a whopping 40% conversion rate. Probably not a night he will repeat soon, but certainly one to be remembered. His two goals were certainly needed by the Falcons as they eek out a win 5-4 versus the Raiders in a game that saw many happy goal scorers, but probably not as many happy goaltenders.

First Comment: Save of the game

With the final period winding down, and the game set at 5-4 after Kristers Dzelme brought the raiders within one earlier 7 minutes into the 3rd,  Halifax was hungry to tie it. While not actually counting as a save, Falcons star goaltender Cedric Robinson certainly prevented the game from needing extra time when he prevented a streaking Mikael Choybuk in the 13th minute of the third. Halifax was pressing on the counterattack after retrieving the puck in the neutral zone, and Choybuk received a crisp pass to streak into the zone. With defender Stolp Skottson hot on his tail, Choybuk swerved into the slot and swept past Robinson, who uncharacteristically bit early. Choybuk was sure it was a simple matter of taking one more stride and sliding the puck into the open far side, and the game would be tied. But with incredible cat-like reflexes, Robinson made a lunging poke check to knock the puck into the far boards. While Choybuk had not technically taken a shot at the net, the puck slid wide and he had to recover for another attempt at a less forgiving angle, which would miss the net.

Second Comment: Hit of the game

There were a lot of big bodies crashing around for tonight, especially on the Falcon's side, outhitting the Raiders 27-17 over the course of the game. In addition to his two assists, Perry Morgan of the Halifax Raiders had six hits, slightly under half of his whole team's physical contributions! But tonight we want to look at the best quality hit, and honour is given to Nat Emerson of the Detroit Falcons. Between 9:45 and 9:49 of the second period, he landed not one, but two devastating hits that made both recipients lose the puck. Coming along the left side of the neutral zone was Halifax Raider Mikael Choybuk with the puck, but he was quickly crushed into the boards by Emerson, the puck squeezed out behind Choybuk, and his teammate Mr. Faceoffs swiftly gained possession, attempting to cross the blue-line into the Falcon's zone, he didn't have enough agility that time to avoid the swinging hip of Nat Emerson, who recovered immediately from delivering the first hit and slingshotted into Faceoffs, knocking him spinning along the blueline and setting the puck loose again. Unfortunately, Emerson would attempt a third check at Mikael Choybuk as they both went for the loose puck. Because neither were in possession of the biscuit, Emerson would be assessed a 2-minute minor for interference.

Third Comment: Goal of the game

Now for the good stuff that everyone waits for, the highlight reel goal. Televisions tonight had the Falcon's fourth goal all over them tonight, as Mike McKorsy was chased from the net on a goal, and to be fair to Mr. McKorsy, there was little that he could have done. Being a man down as Mr. Faceoffs was just about to leave the box for a tripping penalty he committed at the end of the last period, the Falcons were on the cycle. Raino Kyllonen, the rookie center for Detroit, took a sharp-angle shot that dangerously bounced off of Donnie Dick's stick and missed the far post by a few inches. Dicks then beat out the Halifax defender for the puck behind the net, and fed Kyllonen who took another hsot, this time from the high slot. This time the puck boomed off of the backboards and out around the outside, with Stolp Skottson keeping it in the offensive zone. Striding forward, he stepped up quickly before firing into traffic, where the puck bounced under McKorsy's glove hand and trickled sideways through the five-hole. It was Detroit's fourth goal on 18 shots, and Halfiax would then make the decision to sub in Justin Willis.

1. The night started strong for Detroit as after nearly seven minutes of play Halifax received a penalty for interference. After a  few shots blocked from the first power play unit, Detroit deployed their young second power play unit centered by Raino Kyllonen who managed to score a great goal from the crease, which was followed barely twenty seconds later by a 5-on-5 goal. While in the lead from the first period, Detroit managed to greater increase their advantage in the game by scoring two goals, both on the power play. Halifax will have to stay disciplined in the third period if they ever want to come back into this game.

2. The first period was rough on Mike McKorsy as after allowing three goals on only forteen shots within the first period, it didn't look well for him in the rest of the game. Indeed, fifty seconds after the break he let in another goal which removed him from the game in favor of veteran Justin Willis. The goaltender faced fifteen shots in the last forty minutes and managed to keep the Raiders in the game for a chance at a win in the third period but the Falcons' defensive corps didn't let them any opportunities to bring the game in overtime as they barely kept Cedric Robinson busy with three shots on goal.

3. This was yet another game with strong hits from both sides, including Halifax's Perry Morgan. He used his body with effectiveness tonight laying six great hits on the Falcons' offensive players. Coupled with two precise assists, Morgan played a strong game throughout the night that allowed Halifax to stay in the game until they were faced by a stronger team in the third period. However, the young defenseman known for taking pointless penalties stayed true to his name tonight with two penalties that cost the Raiders the game. Well on his way to being the player with the most penalty minutes by the end of the season, we hope he will change this side of his game to help his teammates outside of his great defensive abilities.

FIRST CAREER GOAL ALERT
Getting the first goal of your career is always special, but knowing you played an integral part in making it might just make it even more so. After an interference penalty called on rookie Raiders defenceman Perry Morgan the Detroit Falcons went right to work on the ensuing powerplay. Rookie centerman Raino Kyllönen won the draw cleanly back to Donnie Dicks and the Halifax Raiders wouldn’t touch the puck again until they were fishing it out of their net.

After moving the puck quickly on the PP Donnie Dicks took a shot that missed the net, Raino Kyllönen was first to react, retrieving the puck and taking a shot of his own that missed the net again! Unfortunately for the Raiders, their penalty killers were caught puck watching, as Kyllönen retrieved the puck yet again, managing to tuck it in past goaltender Mike McKorsy for his first SMJHL goal! The Falcons flooded into the corner to celebrate with the young Finn.

SPECIAL TEAMS - GOOD OR BAD?
One interesting stat from the game that will instantly jump out at anyone are how the special teams performed in this contest. Incredible, both teams converted on their powerplay chances at a solid 50%, though of course this means that both penalty kills also let up a goal at a 50% rate as well.

Halifax converted on 2 of their 4 power plays during the game, whilst Detroit converted on 3 of their 6. The majority of these PP opportunities game in the second period, and you can be certain that both coaches preached discipline during the 2nd intermission, with the 3rd period only seeing one penalty called through the final frame.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR
This contest saw the Detroit Falcons jump to a 5-1 lead in the 2nd period, just minutes after chasing Raiders goaltender Mike McKorsy from the crease early in the period. From then on however, one could make the argument that the Falcons let their foot off the gas, and for that, they were almost run over.

The Halifax Raiders showed great resilience to fight back against the soaring Falcons, with goals from Mikael Choybuk and Jimmy Slothface in the 2nd period to close the gap to two, before Kristers Dzelme added the Raiders fourth in the 3rd, to bring the score to 5-4. It wasn’t enough, however, as the veterans amongst the young Falcons team took the game by the scruff of its neck, dominating the latter half of the period following a quick flurry of missed shots by the Raiders to close out the game.

The Falcons are a good team when they need to be. But their Achilles heel is how they can get up to a great lead and let it get to their skill. They got out to a strong lead, but then let up on the defense to try and maintain the level of scoring that they had produced while sacrificing their defense. And it was a case of the Goalie not being tested that hard, but if the Falcons managed to start off on the right foot, Willis may not have been the only goalie pulled on the night. Look forward to the Falcons trying to make something of this.
