PGS S45: Game 134 - VAN v ANC
#1

Welcome to the post game show of the 6th week game between the Vancouver Whalers and the Anchorage Armada!

Final Score
Whalers 5:7 Armada

The Vancouver Whalers are coming into this game from a tight 3:4 loss against the Montreal Militia. They are currently on a 14-8-4 record and 32 points which puts them within reach to the top. The Armada return home from a 2:3 loss in Lethbridge against the currently 9th placed Lions. Their 17-8-1 record puts them at 35 points and still ahead of their opponent of the day.

Period 1

The game is only 1:11 old, when Vancouver defenseman Egor Kucherov finds himself in the penalty box for a high stick. The Armada have a first chance to test their power play on this evening, and it doesn't take long until Xena manages to win a puck in the offensive zone and pass it back to the blue line, where Leopold Lockhart is already waiting for the slapshot. And indeed the puck finds the back of the net. The Armada open the score before even 2 full minutes are played. This is Lockhart's 10th goal of the season! The Whalers play at full strength again, but they still don't get many chances. After almost 4 minutes Ricardo Cotalay's shot misses the net, but the puck is picked up by Xena who manages to put in her own rebound for the early 2:0 lead. After this shock, the Whalers find themselves a bit better in the game, but only a few minutes later, they take their second penalty of the game. And the Armada's power play is on fire tonight. With a beautiful combination, Thomas Speardane and Ricardo Cotalay are able to set up Eero Niemi perfectly for his 8th goal in the season. The Whalers are now broken down and don't manage to create anything. It's really one-way hockey in Alaska tonight. And not even 5 minutes later, Brock Emmerton is able to pick up a blocked shot by Thomas Speardane and score the 4th goal of the night for the Armada. After this goal, Whaler's starting goalie Casimir Stevens has had enough and is substituted by Eddy Ask Jr. After this, the Whalers did indeed wake up and manage to get a couple of chances themselves, but they fail to score. At least Ask manages to keep his goal clean for the rest of the period.

Goals:
Armada Leopold Lockhart 1:27 (PP) - Assisted by Xena
Armada Xena 3:50 - Assisted by Ricardo Cotalay and Thomas Speardane
Armada Eero Niemi 9:02 (PP) - Assisted by Ricardo Cotalay and Thomas Speardane
Armada Brock Emmerton 13:52 - Assisted by Thomas Speardane

Remarks:
Whalers 13:52 substitution of Casimir Stevens through Eddy Ask Jr.

Period 2

The Armada are determined not to give their opponents a game tonight and come out strong in the second. And after not even 3 minutes, Thomas Speardane finds Kenji Yoshimura who manages to score his 4th goal of the season. For those who've lost count, yes this is Speardane's 4th assist on the 5th goal of the evening! Only 4 minutes later, Xena scores her second of the night to make it 6:0 for the Anchorage Armada. The game is not even half way to the finish and it seems already over. But an interference penalty called against Ricardo Cotalay at least brings Vancouver the first power play of the night. And indeed Barret McCarthy manages to put the Whalers on the board. The rest of the period passes like one would expect a 6:1 game to pass. Anchorage has this game under control and doesn't need to put much more effort into it.

Goals:
Armada Kenji Yoshimura 22:45 - Assisted by Thomas Speardane and Bust
Armada Xena 26:44 - Assisted by Mika Mayfield and Maxime Bouchard
Whalers Berret McCarthy 29:47 (PP) - Assisted by Andy Kerr

Period 3

This time the Whalers come completely changed out of their locker room. It looks like their coach was able to find the right words in this brake. Peter Larson in the Armada goal has to stop shot after shot until he can't stop Noah Nowes' to make it 6:2 after 5 minutes into the period. The Whalers continue their assault and only 4 minutes later, Jack Kennedy's shot finds the back of the net as well. The Armada begin to look a bit nervous now and Thomas Speardane has to stop the next attack with help of his stick and takes a hooking penalty. The Whalers who were already successful in their first power play, manage to score again. It's Noah Nowes again after a combination with Jack Kennedy and Egor Kucherov. Suddendly the once already lost game, looks to open up again. The Armada's lead has been cut to only 2 goals. And they seem now even unable to skate. The Whalers look like an SHL team right now and it's Nowes again who manages to cut the Armada lead to one goal. Noah Nowes didn't even need 10 minutes to complete his first hat trick of the season! Anchorage's head coach now looks furious and takes his time out. And it looks to have worked. Xena, Ricardo Cotalay and Mika Mayfield only need 20 seconds to finally finish all Vancouver hopes and make this a 7:5 game. They are able to hold onto that for the remaining 6 minutes of this crazy game.

Goals:
Whalers Noah Nowes 44:39 - Assisted by Tauras Karazija and Andy Kerr
Whalers Jack Kennedy 49:00 - Assisted by Tauras Karazija and Noah Nowes
Whalers Noah Nowes 52:33 (PP) - Assisted by Jack Kennedy and Egor Kucherov
Whalers Noah Nowes 53:12 - Assisted by Andy Kerr and Bernik Vrzala
Armada Mika Mayfield 53:33 - Assisted by Ricardo Cotalay and Xena

Stream of conscousness observations.......

-What a mad game this was. Whalers could've pulled off one of the great comebacks in the history of the J, but the comeback bid was contained by the Armada with a gritty goal from Mika Mayfield. That might've warranted the rarely seen 4th star award because it was such a key goal to stifle the momentum of the game.
-The shot count showed what a momentum swing this game had: Armada fired 15 shots in the first then 9 over the next two periods, Whalers fired 14 shots in the first 2 periods then 16 in the last.
-Peter Larson was tiring towards the end of the game....... better work on that cardio kid. They don't take waterlogged 3rd period softies in the big leagues.
-Casimir got pulled again.......... He doesn't seem to be having the best of puck luck this season, and Eddy Ask Jr might be looking for his job soon enough (although he wasn't much better in relief on this day). Will be interesting to see if he turns this around.
-Good game by Xena, and despite the hat trick by Nowes and playmaking from the Armada teammates, that was a worthy first star performance. Still not sure why Xena or Bust do not feel inclined to give a surname though. Are they Brazilian? Must investigate further.
-Thomas Speardane and Ricardo Cotalay showed good creativity today from the back end with a combined total of 7 assists. Some more performances like that and the Armada's defensive core will be just fine come playoff time, especially if they get the high-level production they need from veterans Leopold Lockhart and Jacob Geza too.

Welcome to this episode of the Arbys™ Three Stars for tonight's match between the Vancouver Whalers and the Anchorage Armada.

Arbys First Star - Xena Armada

The first star of this game goes to second line centre, Xena. In a high scoring night, Xena put up 2 goals and 2 assists. Two of these 4 points came in a busy first period for the Armada, with the first coming off the assist on the power play goal which kicked off the scoring. Xena's shot percentage was 100% and was also impressive in the face off circle, leading to our first star.

Arbys Second Star - Noah Nowes Whalers

The second star goes to the top line Nowes. It's hard not to give Nowes at least one star in this match even though the Whalers lost. His impressive hat trick in the third period alone was enough to rally the Vancouver players for one of the biggest comebacks of the season. It unfortunately proved fruitless in a 7-5 loss.

Arbys Third Star - Thomas Speardane Armada

The final star goes to the blue liner Speardane. The third paring d-man can only be described as the conductor of Anchorage's win tonight, scoring himself an impressive 4 assists. His play making abilities shined through the rest of the roster tonight, and he showed his invaluable capabilities to his head coach.

This was a very high scoring game. A total of 12 goals! That is no small feat and can prove how eager both of these teams were to win. They both made great pushes at multiple times during the game but only one team could come out on top. The armada made their presence felt early in the game as they scored 4 goals! Although Vancouver made a valiant effort in the third period scoring 4 of their own but it was no match. Noah Nowes put up 3 of the 4 Whalers goals in the final period to secure the hattrick.

Comment 1: Powered Plays

For both teams, their power play units were out in full force tonight. Out of the 6 PowerPlays in tonight's game, 4 ended with a goal by the advantaged team. Even more spectacularly, both teams had an equal number of PowerPlays (3 each) and both teams scored the same number of PowerPlay goals (2 each), leaving both teams with a 66.67 PP%. This is very understandable, as both teams are in the top 5 in PowerPlay percentage. (Vancouver with 24.29% and Anchorage with 21.15%). Overall, a very good effort from both sides of the ice in this game, especially on the offensive side.

Comment 2: No One Nowes Hats Better Than...

This game marked the first hat trick for Noah Nowes this season. This was amplified by the fact that not only was it a natural hat trick, but it was completed in the first half of the third period. While this was impressive in itself, Nowes has gone on to score two more hat tricks and holds the lead in the total number of hat tricks in the league. This definitely did propel the Whalers in their attempt at a comeback in the third, but they fell short with a late goal by Mika Mayfield in the second half of the period.

Comment 3: A Tale of Two Rookie, Vancouver Goalies

Despite having one of the better save percentages of the league at the time, especially among rookie goaltenders, Casimir Stevens was chased early on in the first period, allowing 4 goals on 11 shots (.636 SV%). While Stevens was having a decent rookie campaign, this seemed to be the start of a slide: as of now, Stevens has dropped to 9th in SV%, a fall from grace from when he was in the top three.

Afterward, they brought in fellow rookie Eddy Ask Jr. for his third start of the season. While he fared better than Stevens, he only allowed one less goal (10/13 shots saved, 0.769 SV%). Understandably, he would still be rusty when it comes to the real deal.

Vancouver should not be worried, however: despite this game, Stevens is an excellent goaltender and will continue to be one for the foreseeable future.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game .
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Sixth recipient of this trivial achievement..
Anchorage Armada Fourth Line Left Wing Brock Emmerton.
Even though I had to alter the under 7 minutes ice time for this edition of The Insig/Significant At a total of 9:50 of premium ice time 4th line Left Wing Brock Emmerton was a busy player , Emmerton took 1 shot and scored ..that was easy enough scoring his third goal of the season at 13:52 of the 1st Period.
Besides that shot =score thing he contributed 2 hits to his Vancouver opponents and even had time to step into a face off circle and well that wasn't so successful.(0/1) Emmerton stat line finished up as 1-0-1 with an outstanding +1(+/-) while spending a 2 minute snack break in the sin bin (2 PIM). Congrats to Brock Emmerton.

Comment 1: behind the nets.

One of the great untold stories of this game is the growing rivalry between anchorage goalie Peter Larson and Vancouver (starting) goalie Casimir Stevens. This goes back to the preseason and even the prospect tourney when Casimir emerged as one of the top watched rookie goal tenders, Peter had promise, winning the prospect tourney, but with worse stats than Casimir. A friendly rivalry has developed since but is still fierce on the ice. The previous two headed series involving these two ended in a 1-1 draw, but today's match gave Peter the edge while also causing some level of humiliation on Casimir who conceeded four goals in the first half and was pulled before the period end.

Comment 2: bad day for goalies
12 goals scored, four-three-five each period, and three goalies leave this match with their heads down and stats hurt. Casimir must have forgotten to put his skates on right, as the Armada offense put four goals past him in 14 minutes, although the they were clipping at almost a shot on target a minute against Casimir so his defence might need to buy the first round tonight. Ask eddy came in and helped settle the defence for Vancouver but while hiss presence seemed to solidify the defence he still managed to allow three past him on only 13 shots by anchorage. Peter Larson in the other side did well for the first two periods but then in a ten minute period allowed four past him to almost being Vancouver back into the game. At .63, .76 and .83 and 4, 3, and 5 conceded, none of the goalies should be holding their heads high tonight.

Comment 3: when should a goalie be pulled?

Let's take a closer look at that highlight game-winning goal by Xena at 6:44 in the 2nd period. The whole sequence was started by Ricardo Cotalay intercepting a pass by the Whaler's Tauras Karazija. Cotalay stole the pass and pushed it ahead to Kenji Yoshimura who dumped the puck into the Whaler's zone. Skating at full speed Ricardo Cotalay nearly gets to the puck in time but Vancouver's Carlo Russo gets there first. A puck battle ensues as Cotalay manages to intercept the outlet pass. Cotalay passed it to Bust, who quickly fed it to Yoshimura on the far side. Yoshimura does a give qive and go with Cloutier and enters the Whaler's zone. Yoshimura's pass is intercepted by Vancouver but again their outlet is stymied by the Armada's relentless forecheck. Xena intercepts the pass, gives a quick saucer to Lockhart to gives it right back to Xena for a one time in the high circle. Shot misses the target but Xena gets there first. She passes it to Lockhard, he passes to Bouchard who passes to Mika all alone on the wing. The shot is blocked but Xena pounds home the rebound for a 6-0 score for the Armada.
