Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows vs. Vancouver Whalers Whalers

Tonight we have a premier matchup between the reigning four star cup champions in the St. Louis Scarecrows and the champions just one season prior to that in the Vancouver Whalers. Both teams possess game breaking ability throughout their lineup includes a pair of talented young netminders so this should be one hell of a game. Through the first 20 minutes the score remained tied at zero goals a piece, but the Scarecrows did manage to out shoot the Whalers by a wide margin of 11-4. A single penalty was called as Whalers blue line Tauras Karaziga was tagged for hooking early in the period, but the Scarecrows were unable to capitalise on the man advantage.

In the second period we saw a little more life from the Whalers as they managed to rally back from a weak first period and out shoot the Scarecrows by a margin of 13-7, making for a much closer total of 18-17 in favor of the Scarecrows. Despite the flurry of shots from the Vancouver Whalers the Scarecrows would prevail and score the games first goal. Basil Magnicotta tallied his second goal of the season on assists from Bernard Freeman and Nicolas Fleming a little over halfway through the period. They wouldn't have much time to rejoice though as the Whalers would answer back quickly with a goal of their own. Scarecrows netminder Aleister Cain was unable to recover from the first shot as Noah Nowes would tally his second goal of the season on assists from Jack Kennedy and Barret McCarthy. Once again only a single infraction was made as Samuel Jalopski with the St. Louis Scarecrows would get dinged with a roughing call towards the end of the second.

In the third and final window we saw a style of play much similar to what we say in the first. Neither team was unable to break the 1-1 deadlock. The Whalers would lead the shot clock once again by a margin of 10-5 for a shot total of 27-23 in the favor. Tempers flared early in this period however as Carlo Russo of the Whalers and Steven Moyer of the Scarecrows would drop the mitts. Russo would prove victorious in their bout. Outside of the fighting majors Whalers winger Backdoor Barnacle would receive a minor for holding early in the period as well as Samuel Jalopski with the Scarecrows for goalie interference halfway through 3rd. Once again neither team were able to capitalise on the man advantage as both powerplays were ice cold, ending the evening 0 for 3.

With the game still tied we entered in to a much anticipated winner takes all overtime period. Based on the play of the Whalers through the final two periods you would be hard pressed to say it wasn't in their favor, however it was the late game heroics of St. Louis' Ty Hoover that proved to be the difference. The young center tallied his second goal of his career just 17 seconds in to extra time on an assist from Nicolas Fleming.

1st star - Aleister Cain (STL) - after a relaxing 1st period the 3rd year netminder stole the show finishing the game with 26/27 saves and a save percentage of 96.3%
2nd star - Ty Hoover (STL) - the game winning goal scorer, Hoover finished the game with 1 goal, a +1 rating, 4 shots and 2 hits as well as 16/26 faceoff wins.
3rd star - Basil Magnicotta (STL) - the other St. Louis goal scorer, Basil finished the game with 1 goal, a +1 rating and a single shot.

Final Score: Scarecrows 2 - 1 Whalers

Good night folks!

First star: Scarecrows Aleister Cain
Aleister Cain had a solid performance in the net, only allowing one goal on 27 shots and recording a 0.963 save percentage. Cain made a few vital saves in the second and third period of the game to force overtime.

Second star: Scarecrows Ty Hoover
Ty Hoover scored the overtime and game winning goal only 17 seconds into overtime. After winning the face off the Scarecrows were able to keep posession and on a pass from Nicolas Fleming he scored five hole on Casimir Stevens.

Third star: Scarecrows Basil Magnicotta
Basil Magnicotta scored the first goal of the game 11:31 into the second period. He was assisted by Bernard Freeman and Nicolas Flemming.

Comment two
Nicolas Flemming overlooked for star of the game
Having assisted on two goals, Nicolas Flemming was overlooked for a star of the game. He was also +2, the only one on the St. Louis Scarecrows team. With a solid 20:39 minutes of icetime which 2:23 came on the powerplay and 1:20 on the penalty kill he put up solid minutes. The only downside to todays performance was a first period roughing minor. Luckily the Vancouver Whalers did not convert on the power play. His pass in overtime for the gamewinner was magnificent and should show up in some highlight reels tonight on a few game shows.

For our bonus podcast today let's look at how the Vancouver Whalers flipped the script on the St. Louis Scarecrows in the 2nd period, but still managed to lose out in OT. In the first period, the Scarecrows were running away in the shot count at 11-4. However, after some choice words from their coach, the Whalers rallied back and took over the shot lead in both the 2nd and 3rd periods at a total whopping count of 23 - 12. The Scarecrows managed to hang in there though and even scored halfway through the 2nd to take a 1-0 lead. The game remained tied into OT until Scarecrows got the jump in the first 17 seconds of the match and got the winning goal.

Our second part of the podcast is going to look at special teams play. Or, how special teams did not play any part in this OT matchup. Both teams went 0/3 on the powerplay and were therefore perfect on the penalty kill. Goalies were sharp, and I think both teams need to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to improve their scoring. After a minor penalty to Samuel Jalopski for goalie interference in the 3rd, Shaquille Derisraka was heard swearing on the bench after missing the net on two consecutive shots. Even the matched fighting penalty at 0:37 of the 3rd brought no resolution to the game as both Carlo Russo and Steven Moyer sat for 5 minutes.

Lets take a closer look at that lightning-quick overtime goal by the St. Louis Scarecrows. The Scarecrows came out with some fire in their bellies after struggling to put pucks on net in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Scarecrow center Steven Moyer won the first faceoff in OT and a beautiful passing sequence led to a shot on goalie Casimir Stevens, who was up to the task. Vancouver's Bernik Vrazala scooped out the rebound and tried to clear it out to the zone but shot it out of the reach of his intended target, leading to icing and another faceoff in the Vancouver zone. On the subsequent faceoff the Scarecrows won it again. Fleming gathered the puck, passed it to Hoover who one timed the puck from the top of the circle right. The puck squirted under the arm of Vancouver's goalie and across the goal line for the winner. Vancouver's poor breakout pass cost them the victory on this day

Firstly, nicely done @ztevans. It always amazes me how some people can talk without dropping a silence.

#1 comment (player spotlight)
My player spotlight today is Shaquille Derisraka from the Vancouver Whalers. The powerforward center from Russia, drafted 16th overall by the Vancouver Whalers in the S43 SMJHL Entry Draft and 5th overall in by the New England Wolfpack in the S44 SHL Entry Draft. has become an important player for the Whalers. In his third season with the Whalers, he is getting top line minutes in all units. He is not known for gathering many points, but the guy likes to hit. In fact, at the time of this writing he is leading the league with 67 hits, followed by Rainbow Dash (61) and Rahotep Tutankhamun (53). In this game, he added 5 to his total.

Comment 1:
St Louis Chronicle Game Recap
Your St Louis Scarecrows played the Vancouver Whalers for the third time in their first five games, edging out the Whalers in Vancouver in overtime, the Crow's first overtime game of the season. Aleister Cain continues to shine as the Crow's #1 netminder, stopping 26 of the 27 shots he faced in tonight's matchup. St Louis rookies continue to impress as well, as Basil Magnicotta was awarded the third star in tonight's matchup with the game's first goal and Basil's second of the season. St Louis takes on the Lethbridge Lions in the first of a three game homestand tomorrow night.

Comment 2:
Special K Special-Teams Player of the Game
Unlike previous editions of this player of the game, tonight we have two special-team players of the game. Those players from tonight's matchup are the netminders from both teams - Aleister Cain (STL) and Casimir Stevens (VAN). Cain stopped 4 shots on goal on the penalty kill and Stevens stopped 5 shots on goal during the Whaler's penalty kill. Both teams went 0 for 3 on their power plays in tonight's matchup, and shots were near even for both teams on their respective power plays. Heading into each team's next match, they should have full trust in their netminders to stop shots, but focus should be more on their power plays to hopefully tilt the scales in the next matchup.

Comment 3:
House of Crow Rook of the Game
Tonight's rook of the game should come as no surprise as Basil Magnicotta (STL) is tonight's recipient of the House of Crow Rook of the Game. Magnicotta opened tonight's scoring with a one-timer off a missed shot by Bernard Freeman (STL). This was Magnicotta's lone shot of the game, but he made it count. Magnicotta also continues to see trust from the St Louis coaching staff as he continues to see power play time playing the point on the Crow's second power play unit. Magnicotta is just one of the many St Louis rookies to look out for as the season progresses.

First Comment: Fight of the Game

We don't see a tremendous amount of fighting at the SMJHL level, so it is always a treat to see two players drop the gloves for their respective teams. Tonight it was Carlo Russo of the Vancouver Whalers  Whalers and Stephen Moyer of the St. Louis Scarecrows  Scarecrows who squared off early to start the third. A tie game at 1-1 at this juncture, the bout couldn't have been more tense as they circled each other slowly. Russo was the first to grab his opponent's sweater, and the two were interlocked and trading quick punches for the first few seconds. An attempted haymaker by Moyer put him off-balance, and Russo connected with a quick jab to the chin causing Moyer to lose his balance. Upon falling to the ground, Russo landed a couple more shots to his opponent before the linesman intervened, giving him credit for the victory in this bout.

Second Comment: Goal of the Game

How could it not be the overtime winner? in an excellent goaltending duel between Aleister Cain and Casimir Stevens (who recorded a 0.963 and 0.920 save percentage respectively tonight), it had to be an excellent shot to get by either of these two. After a quick faceoff and two quick turnovers of possession, the Scarecrows found themselves in a 3-on-2. Faking a pass to Bernard Freeman, Nicolas Fleming quickly danced around one Whaler's defenseman and was able to slide it smoothly across the slot to a streaking Ty Hoover. Winding up for a slapshot, Hoover changed his mind last second and held onto the puck for a split second longer, making it more or a snap-shot one-timer that an outstretched Casimir Stevens just couldn't catch on time, the shot placed very well on the middle inside of the post.

Third Comment: Rookie of the game

In such a low-scoring game as this, the goalies performed excellently and the defense restricted the amount of scoring chances, with neither team reaching 30 shots on goal for the game. So for tonight's rookie of the game, we went with somebody on defense who also made a difference on the scoreboard: Basil Magnicotta. The first-year defender from Switzerland had integrated well onto a Scarecrows roster that had some holes to fill left by promoted players, after the Crows lifted the Four-Star Cup last season. Magnicotta is seeing average third-paring minutes for a defender, but has appeared on the powerplay consistently for the crows, seeing two and a a half minutes on the man advantage this game. His goal came in during even-strength this time however, sliding in from the blue-line to the slot so he could strike home a shot past Casimir Stevens in the second period to open the scoring.
