Falcons Detroit Falcons vs. St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows

Tonight we have a battle between two of the most decorated junior teams in the eastern conference. On the home side wearing the black and gold we have the St. Louis Scarecrows. On the away side we have the visiting Detroit Falcons dawning the red and white. Over the last few seasons these teams have separated themselves from the rest of the pack and have proven to be perennial winners. In this game however only one can win. Let's dive in.

Just a little over 2 minutes in to this one and the Scarecrows strike first as Helmuts Akmenlauks scores his forth of the season on the man advantage. Assists go to Bernard "Bun-B" Freeman and Steven Moyer. Jimmy Cahill can be seen shaking his head as he exits the penalty box. Not the start the Falcons were looking for in this one, but still plenty of hockey to go. As we approach the end of the 1st period the Scarecrows strike again and double their lead off a lazer beam like shot from Bun-B, his 8th of the season. His linemate Ty Hoover is credited with the assist. Not even 20 seconds later the Scarecrows put up another tally as Ty Hoover goes top shelf, far bar on a brilliant passing play from Slip McScruff and Adam Taylor. One period down and the Scarecrows hold a commanding 3-0 lead after out shooting the Falcons 8-2.

Start of the second period and Falcons find themselves in a pretty deep hole. St Louis' Michael Fox takes a flagrant tripping call early and the Falcons hop on the powerplay. Only needing 20 seconds on the man advantage the Falcons strike for their first of the game to bring the game within 2 as Tobias Viklund scores his 5th goal of the season off assists from David Fantobens and Franz Cooper. 10 minutes later the Scarecrows would regain their 3 goal lead on a goal from Bernard Freeman, his second of the match. The lone assist was given to Adam Taylor. Late in the second Bernard would get a little too chippy with his stick and got hit with a hooking call. The Falcons would make the most of their opportunity as they'd convert on yet another power play to bring the score back within two to end the period. This time on a tally from Wolfhard Richter, his 6th of the season. David Fantobens would be credited with the lone assist on the goal.

Third and final period. St. Louis are still in the lead, but Detroit did manage to reduce the lead by 1 in the second. Five minutes in and the Scarecrows regain their 3 goal lead yet again, this time on a tally from Adam Taylor. Bernard Freeman and Nicolas Fleming are credited with the assists. As we approach the final 10 minutes it looks like this one is almost over. Just under 7 minutes to go and the Scarecrows put this one out of reach as Steven Moyer strikes for this 3rd goal of the season. To add insult to injury St. Louis' Tyler Tougard scores his 4th of the season inside the final 3 minutes to put the home town Scarecrows up 7-2. A good old fashioned blowout to be sure.

First Star - Bernard Freeman Scarecrows - With 2 goals, 2 assists and a sparkling +4 rating there was very little this young stud did wrong in this game.
Second Star - Adam Taylor Scarecrows - Tallying 1 goal and 3 assists Adam's play making was thoroughly on show tonight. A delight to watch.
Third Star - Ty Hoover Scarecrows - Collecting 1 goal and 1 assist the rookie finished with a fantastic +4 rating and 14 of 25 faceoff wins.

Comment #1:
St. Louis Scarecrows really piled it on in the first period, taking a commanding 3-0 lead. Bernard Freeman recorded 2 points in the first period alone, en route to a first star performance with 4 total points on the day. Freeman punished the Detroit Falcons early on in the power play, sliding through a fantastic through ball to Helmuts Akmenlauks, who slotted it home past the keeper in right after a faceoff opportunity deep into the Falcons zone. Jimmy Cahill committed the penalty just 1:36 into the game, and the Scarecrows wasted no time to punish the Falcons on their exuberant and physical play.

Comment #2:
The Falcons really got hit by a double whammy as the first period closed. The St. Louis Scarecrows slotted two goals past Cedric Robinson in nearly 15 seconds. Robinson was hauled off the ice eventually in the 3rd period, early on. Giving up 4 penalties in the game left the Falcons at a disadvantage for a huge amount of time. Although the Falcons themselves converted on both of their power play opportunities in the game, the Scarecrows went 2 for 4 on the power play, making use of all of the chances the Falcons gave them with a man up. The Falcons need to be more disciplined.

Comment #3:
The Scarecrows really poured it on in the 3rd period against the Falcons. Helmuts Akmenlauks added on 2 assists late on in the 3rd period, including one on the power play. This came in addition to his power play goal early on to open the scoring in this goalfest for the Scarecrows. Criminally, Akmenlauks was left off of the 3 stars list for this game, despite his 3 point total on the night. Adam Taylor for the Scarecrows also tacked on a goal with a hattrick of assists for the night. Taylor is now up to 11 assists on the season, so this game was a huge boost to his numbers and he looks a real talent on the first line of the Scarecrows defense.

Smeb report:
The only smeb in this game was Kit, the best one of the bunch, but unfortunately he didnt look the best during this game. He was a -1 on the contest which looking at the rest of the lineup was not all that bad. Plenty of players were minus two or even minus three. Kit wasnt the worst on his team but he certainly doesnt deserve praise, only one shot attempt and one hit despite logging a conciderable amount of minutes at over fifteen minutes in the game. He lost is only faceoff also. Kit was in a bit of a slump at this time and shows no signs of breaking out of it

Goalie report:
ohhh boy were the goalies an interesting story in this game. For a low shot game with no team getting over 21 shots, there were a lot of goals. Cedric Robinson, who is known to be one of the better goalies ever to play in the smjhl had an awful game, letting in 5 goals on only eighteen shots, for a ridiculously low percentage. Hasek came in for relief and only faced three shots, but they were all quality chances and one slipped by. The rookie made a couple of good saves, but ultimately the defense had given up at that point and one of those shots Hasek had no shot at stopping. In net for St Louis Marshall stopped sixteen out of eighteen shots, which while not amazing, was definitely enough to have his team win the game handily. Being st louis' backup, he did all they could ask for this game and didnt let up any tying goals, or any goals that took the lead. Good game from him

St Louis Chronicle Game Recap

St Louis (11-8-0) extended their winning streak to 4 games after routing Detroit (12-6-0) by a score of 7-2, ending Detroit's two game win streak in the process. Five players on St Louis registered multi-point nights, while the night's top two stars of the game - Bernard Freeman and Adam Taylor - registered 4 point nights each, combining for three goals and five assists. Rookie Lee Marshall started in net for the Scarecrows and registered his third win of the season (3-2-0), making confident sops throughout the game to keep the Scarecrows ahead. It's typically pretty easy though to register a win when your offense scores seven goals, but that isn't to say that Marshall didn't impress tonight, his play was quite impressive against one of the stiffer teams to play against in the SMJHL. Both of these teams play again tomorrow at Detroit.

Special K Special-Teams Player of the Game

Tonight's Special K Special-Team's Player of the Game comes yet again from the Scarecrows, this time though a new player joins the list of players to win the award: Helmuts Akmenlauks. Akmenlauks had himself quite a night registering three points (1 G, 2 A), two of which came on the Scarecrow powerplay. The St Louis powerplay converted on two of their four attempts, and Akmenlauks had his hand in both converted attempts for St Louis, with his lone goal and one of his assists coming on the powerplay. Despite being a part of the second powerplay unit, Akmenlauks was able to generate chances that ended up in the back of the net tonight.

Comment 3:
House of Crow Rook of the Game
Tonight's House of Crow Rook of the Game is none other than rookie netminder Lee Marshall. Despite only seeing 18 total shots in the matchup, Marshall was solid in net, only letting in two goals. One thing to take note of though is that both goals came on the Detroit power play. The Scarecrow skaters did not do much to help Marshall on either goal scored against him, and when it came to even strength Marshall was solid. It is becoming a battle in net between Marshall and Sorokin for who will take over the starting role when Aleister Cain gets called up to the SHL, and Marshall continues to add to the argument for him to take over the reigns sooner rather than later.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game .
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The First recipient of this trivial achievement..
Saint Louis Scarecrows Fourth Line Center Alekski Leskinen .
Leskinen in a short 6:14 of premium ice time ,was able to win two out of the four face offs he took and register one hit on a member of the Detroit opposition. Most significant was his ability to maintain an even 0 in his (+/-) rating . A major accomplishment that none of the Detroit Fourth liners were able to match. (110)

Scarecrows going to work on Falcons.
The St.Louis scarecrows did what scarecrows does best, keeping birds away. Tonight was a low shooting game with St. Louis shooting 21 on goal and detroit shooting only 18. That did not stop St. Louis from scoring though, 7 pucks crossed the detroit goal line. This was a disaster game for Detroit, they only had 2 shoots in the first period, then they seemed to have woken up during the second vid 12 shots and 2 goals and then in the third they seemd to have given up just getting 4 shots on net.

Comment 2

St. Louis Shot straight through Faclons goalie Cedric Robinson and straight to the bench. After letting in 5 goals on 18 shots he was done for the night, Adam Taylor scored 5:06 in to the third and the Detroit coachen decided to pull Robinson and put Jukub Hasek in for the rest of the night. Hasek was apparently not in game mode caus he let in 2 goals on 3 shots for a 33.3% saves digging the detroit grave even deeper. Steven Moyer scored his first of the night for his secont point and then Tyler Tougard scored, also his first of the night.

Comment 3
Points were raining down on Bernard Freeman and Adam Taylor this evening both recording 4 points each, Freeman with two goals and two assists and Taylor with one goal and three assists. Freeman had the orimary assist on Helmuts Akmenlauks powerplay goal to open the scoring jn the first and followed that up by scoring one himself 13 minutes later and then Taylor got a secondary assist just 16 second later on Ty Hoover goal to put St.Louis up 3-0 in the first. Then in the second period Taylor assisted on Freemans second of the night and in the third Freeman assisten on Taylors first. Theese two really lead the way for St. Louis tonight showing of skill in the offensive zone and consistency in the defensive zone.

The Falcons stuttered out of the gate, and then proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot. Both the goaltending and the defense for Detroit just seemed like it was in a state of flux. Not knowing what the plan was or being able to communicate correctly with each other. And since the Falcons were so busy digging the puck out of the back of their net, they did not have time to get any form of offense on the ice. Overall not the most impressive performance from anyone involved on Detroit. Marshall did not have too many tests in the form of facing 18 shots compared to his teams total 21.
