SMJHL Career Wins Record Press Conference
#1
(This post was last modified: 01-28-2019, 10:42 PM by grok.)

With 99 career wins in 178 games played, Cedric Robinson has tied Friedrich Schmidt's record for Most Career Regular Season Wins by a SMJHL goaltender.  Robinson completed the feat in 9 fewer games played than Schmidt.  With a career GAA of 2.61 and career SV% of 0.899, Robinson has led his team to two Laurifer Cups and four playoff appearances.  Robinson's senior career also helped him claim second all-time in career shots against and tie for third in career shutouts.

Robinson is open to the press for questions.

Unfortunately, I won't get the chance to reach 100 in my SMJHL career.  This is my last season of eligibility before waivers, and with Jordin FourFour Jr.'s retirement at the end of the season Buffalo is depending on me to start in S45.  It will be bittersweet leaving the league right before win 100, but I'm happy to share the record and look on to the big show.

Buffalo is going to be an exciting time for me, and right up my alley.  Four seasons ago I was in the exact same position with Detroit--delivering a starter's workload as a rookie.  History shows I exceeded everyone's expectations, winning Goalie of the Year as a rookie.  I plan to do the same in SHL.  Enter, dominate, playoffs, all in my first season.  End of story.  Getting another opportunity like that is worth missing out on sole possession of the wins record.

Let me get back to you on that in a couple weeks.

I've actually had a lot of quality time with Jakub Hasek this season, since Ricky Lewis aged out.  It's a fantastic feeling--you get to tell a narrative and watch a rookie build confidence over time instead of slapping together some words and hoping for the best.  But the biggest takeaway for me is Detroit is a city that will care for you, and the Falcons are a team that have your best interests in mind.  I have no doubt that given the support system and management in Detroit, Hasek will have another record-setting career when I hand the reins over.

Honestly, the hardest part about being a goalie in this league is having the confidence to play to your strengths.  I'm a big guy, and I know I'll never be as fast or floppy as those little guys on other teams.  But I played to my size instead of adapting to everyone else's game, and it paid off dividends for me.  Stick to your strengths, even when it seems harder than just adapting, and you will be rewarded for it.

Definitely Vrana.  Petr was always a big challenge and Montreal is our sworn enemy, so I'll miss beating them over and over.  Now that I'll be headed to Buffalo and Vrana to San Francisco, it'll be a change only seeing him across the ice a couple times a year.

Honestly, I want to recreate my success as a Detroit rookie.  My first season in Detroit, I was thrown into a starting role.  I came out the other side with a Goalie of the Year trophy.  I think it will be a real challenge to replicate that success in a league with a higher level of competition, but I would rather aim high and miss than aim low and exceed.  You don't grow from setting your expectations low.

01-28-2019, 02:24 PMZombiewolf Wrote: Long term what would you consider a successful career as a goalie?

Three things.  Individual awards.  Franchise records.  Hall of Fame.  Anything short of those three things is a failure.  There is no alternative.  I came into this league wanting to be the best, and I still want to be the best.

Biggest thing I'm going to miss is the sense of community.  First year SMJHL guys make a really awesome locker room environment, and I really do have a papa bear mentality in the locker room.  You can ask anyone--I always stick up for our young guys and I always will.  SHL guys already had at least one year of SMJHL, they don't need that same guidance.  Or they already know where to get it.  It's different.  Not bad, just different.  I'll get used to it.

I'm really looking forward to the substantial role I'll be taking with Buffalo.  I thrive under pressure and under high expectations, so I really think Buffalo's system will set me up for immediate success.
