Determined to Succeed
(This is my first article)Amid the snow-capped ski peaks of Whistler, British Columbia, a young hockey centerman seeks to make a difference not only in the hockey world, but also in other endeavors. Lex Peters is a determined but quiet locker room standout from the Whistler Wildcats out of BC. The young Peters was born and raised in British Columbia to father Marko Peters-Bergmann, a high level Swedish skier who sought to settle down in Canada following the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. In Bergmann's early time in Canada, he struggled to find himself and traveled across the country three different times before settling down in Whistler. Peters' mother, Eileen Miller lived in Victoria in 1992 just as Bergmann had just made a move locally to do some skiing at Mount Washington as well as pursue a business position in Vancouver. After Miller and Bergmann met, they both continued to live normal lives, getting married in 1997 and having three children, his brother Martin, sister Leanna, and Lex. Lex being the youngest of the three, being born in 2002. Lex started as an early hockey player. The Peters' moved to Whistler shortly before Lex was born, just two hours outside of Vancouver, nestled in the mountains. A perfect place to groom the type of player Lex had strived to be his whole life. A town of only 12,000, Whistler allowed Lex to grow up to be a quiet and reserved individual. His coaches for the Whistler Wildcats often did not have an opinion on his quiet off-ice nature. In 2012, Peters played under Wildcats peewee AA head coach Marty Wolfe as a 10 year old. Quote:Lex was probably one of the most reserved, mature 10 year olds I have coached in my time here in Canada. He was very quiet in the room and outside of the rink, but when that kid stepped on the ice, he just would never shut up, ripping into other players and getting into tons of scrums. For the first two years he played up, the coaching staff and I absolutely refused to give him any letters just due to the risk of him being targeted. However, when he did come into age, we knew he would be the guy wearing at least an A. Highly regarded around the BCMHL(British Columbia Metro Hockey League) for his ability to skate and handle the puck, Peters also made a name for himself digging into the corners defensively. Despite being of a smaller stature, Peters was rarely ever afraid of any physicality. Locally, Peters could hold his own in a portion of Canada well known for breeding large, capable defensemen. In addition to his hockey endeavors, Peters also runs a small charity event every season to benefit from mental health affairs together with the Whistler Wildcats organization. Peters says mental health has had a tremendous effect on his life and that it is one of the most important things to him, when asked about why, Peters followed up; Quote:Looking back, I always played up out of my age group. I was really exposed to a ton of stuff that most 10 year old kids don't get to see. I made some bonds with some players and unfortunately they suffered from some things and I just thought to myself, "Why should anyone ever have to suffer like that?" That is why I started doing these charity events with the Wildcats. I would never be able to reach my goals without the Program President Lukas Hallback. In both hockey and health, President Hallback has supported me for as long as I can remember. As Peters looks to commit himself to the SMJHL this season, there has been rumors mentioning the hometown Vancouver Whalers, as well as the somewhat local Anchorage Armada. Quote:Where I go doesn't really matter to me. I know Mom and Dad will support me wherever I go. It all just comes down to my teammates and the room around me, I suppose. I'm not exactly quick to adapt to big changes like this.Peters is expected to play in the SMJHL prospect showcase alongside some old rivals, Jax Duggan and Joseph Laraque. The three met at a major tournament in Lake Placid some years ago, and Peters certainly remembers the two well. Make sure to keep your eyes on Lex Peters in the SMJHL draft, as he is poised to make a difference on the ice and off.
