Game #6: @
We’re here in Halifax Nova Scotia for the Raiders home opener. Fans are going wild! A woman just flashed the camera! This match up is the 2nd game of the season for both teams. Each of them is 1-0 coming into this game. Halifax beat Vancouver 4-3 on the road and Lethbridge beat Colorado 5-3 on the road as well. Each team is looking to pick up their 2nd win on the season in this one as their quest toward the Four Star Cup continues early in season 46. Both teams have a lot of talent and are well managed so this should be a good game! Here We Go!!! Period 1: Raiders come out strong, throwing the body and getting some quick shots on net, they’re looking good, but it’d be the Lions opening the scoring in this one. Dickens Makeout-King gently nudges one past the goalie for a 1-0 lead just 3:31 into the game, from Jules Chocolate E'clair and Monkey Luffy. Halifax keeps working hard and gets the equalizer with just 30 seconds left in the period, Jaguar Johnson with his 2nd of the year, burying a pass in the high slot from Andrej Doskocil and Troy Reynolds. 1-1 after 1. Hard fought period for both teams. Shots were 10 for Halifax and 7 for Lethbridge in the period. Code: 1. Lethbridge Lions , Dickens Makeout-King 1 (Jules L'Eclair 1, Monkey D. Luffy 2) at 3:31 Period 2: The Raiders would strike again early in the 2nd period with a howitzer from Dylan Karlsson, his first goal of the year from Reece and Doskocil. That’s 2 helpers from Dosk already! Back and forth action with both teams exchanging chances, a couple odd man rushes but that'd be it for scoring this period. Halifax took 3 penalties but Lethbridge was unable to capitalize. It's 2-1 after 2 periods of play, Da’ Raiders. Shots that period were 8 for Halifax and 7 for Lethbridge in the period. Code: 3. Halifax Raiders , Dylan Karlsson 1 (Isaiah Reece 1, Andrej Doskocil 2) at 4:19 3rd Period: Action picking up now and we’d see Monkey Luffy rip the tying goal for Lethbridge, from Makeout King and McMasters at 6:04. Then it was all Halifax with Gaspard Boone sniping one home from Doskocil at 9:57 to put the Raiders ahead 3-2. That’s 3 apples from Dosk! All Raiders from here on out as Lethbridge's spirit seems broken after that goal and they only muster 4 shots in the frame to Halifax's 15. Matt Kholin would bury his first of the year late at 19:42 to make this a 4-2 Raiders Victory! Code: 4. Lethbridge Lions , Monkey D. Luffy 1 (Dickens Makeout-King 1, Donny McMasters 1) at 6:04 Final: 4 2 Game Notes: Lethbridge went 0-5 on the powerplay and only managed 18 shots in the game. Halifax took over in the 3rd period firing 15 shots, ending with 33 total shots in the game. Face Offs were also a big factor in this outcome with Halifax winning 42 to Lethbridge's 30. Controlling the puck seemed to be a big factor in this victory for Halifax and Andrej Doskocil was also a big catalyst. ---->GAME LINK<---- Esa's #1 Star Of the Game: Andrej Doskocil, 3 assists, +2, 3 hits 1 block. TSN TURNING POINT
With the season still in its first week, and with early points up for grab Lethbridge battled in out in Halifax as they took on the Raiders. The game was a tight one through 2 periods aas halifax lead two to 1 with Goals from Dickens Makeout-King for Lethbridge followed by Jaguar Johnson and Dylan Karlsson for Halifax. As the got onto the ice for the 3rd period Lethbridge was flying and found away to tie the game up just 6 minutes into the period as Monkey D. Luffy potted one for the Lions. Thats where our TSN Turning point comes in as Gaspard Boone wastes no time and scores just 3 minutes later to give the lead back to Halifax and they never looked back. They went on to win the games 4 to 2 against the Lions The Highlights The Lions got the early jump on the Raiders with a nice goal from Dickens Makeout-King to open the scoring... Right before the end of the 1st period Jaguar Johnson netted his 2nd of the season to tie the game up just 30 seconds before intermission... The nail in the coffin game around the mid way point of the 3rd as Gaspard Boone tallied the Game Winning goal 9 minutes into the final period... MVP of the game ANDREI DOSKOCIL Tonight's game was a tightly competed battle in Halifax and when the final horn sounded there was 1 name that found its way on to the score sheet more then anybody else. Andrei Doskocil had an impressive outing and he was dishing the puck every where and finished the game with 3 helpers. His first 3 assists on the season and was surely a huge reason why Halifax came out with the win against the Lions. Doskocil will have a big role with the Raiders all season and games like this are the exact reason why he will be an anchor on their blue line all season. HE SHOOTS HE SCORES
JOHN LANGABEER NETS IT AND TIES THE GAME!!!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AND HE SCORES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! Comment One - First Round Focus:
In this segment, we will break down the impact that each team's first-round selection from the S46 draft had on today's game. Thomas Bathory (D) Thomas impressively slotted in on the second defensive pair alongside Donny McMasters in just his second game in the SMJHL. Despite his team losing 4-2, Bathory was able to maintain a +1 plus/minus and registered a hit throughout the game, and played the most minutes of any Lion at 22:30 minutes played. Thomas' defensive prowess was showcased during today's game, however, the team hopes he begins to contribute offensively as the season progresses. Esa Parmborg (C/RW) Unlike Thomas, Esa did not jump any sophomores on the depth chart so he started this game on the third line beside fellow rookie Jaguar Johnson, and in between 2nd-year Gaspard Boone. In the Raider's 4-2 victory, Parmborg was on the ice for one goal for, leaving him at a +1 similar to Bathory, he also had 2 shots on goal and 1 hit to round out his stats. Esa demonstrated his two-way play during today's game, and he will find the back of the net soon enough if he continues to take shots from danger areas. Comment Two - Who was Hot? Forward of the Game - Gaspard Boone Gaspard scored the game-winning goal for the Raiders, all while playing with two rookies on the third line. His stat line was rounded out by 3 shots on goal, 2 hits and winning just under 50% of his faceoffs. An all-around masterpiece of a game that was essential to the Raiders victory tonight. Defenseman of the Game - Andrej Doskocil Andrej excelled at both ends of the ice in this game. Recording 3 assists including the primary assist on the game-winning goal, as well as racking up a +2 plus/minus, 3 hits and 1 shot block, it was evident that Doskocil was the overall player of the game for the Raiders. Goaltender of the Game - Patrice Nadeau Patrice was left out to dry by his teammates in this game, yet he managed to save 29 of 32 shots that he faced, for a .906 save pct., and kept the game much closer than it could've been. Nadeau should be ripping into the offensively talented forwards that are present in the Lethbridge locker room for some support in the coming games. Comment Three - Who was Not? Liable Forward of the Game - Roger Baston and co. Roger represents the second forward line for the Lions who failed to put up a single goal to support their goaltender's performance and were held to just 4 shots on goal throughout the entire game. Their performances while on the man-advantage, which they were for over 5 minutes during the game, were also abysmal, to say the least. Liable Defenseman of the Game - Sami Karppa and Jay Boom'Boom This defensive pairing played sheltered minutes tonight but still managed to be on the ice for 3 and 2 goals respectively. Sami only managed one shot to finish off either of their stat lines so they failed to produce offensively or defensively, practically costing Lethbridge the game. Liable Goaltender of the Game - Mike McKorsy Mike faced very limited shots on goal during this game because of some strong defensive showings throughout the lineup, yet he managed to allow 2 goals on 18 shots which could have proven costly for his team if the offense had not produced like they did, he will need to pick it up in future games if Halifax hopes to win the cup.

Three Stars
1. Andrej Doskocil had a massive game as he recorded a huge three assists from the blueline. This guy is a massive piece for his team and will be super important towards them finding their footing this season and really getting going. I'm excited to see how he continues to progress in the league. Doskocil has always been a staple player for the Raiders since he joined the team, and the excitement in Halifax surrounding him is extremely evident. If he continues on a trend line like he had this game he could be looking at a campaign that is MVP worthy. 2. It's always hard to say the guy who scores the game winner isn't one of the top dogs, so when it came to Gaspard Boone this was an obvious selection. While his impact wasn't necessarily as big as Doskocil for the entire game, his stat line at the very end of the game ended up being a lot more important. Boone wasn't just the goal scorer this game though as he also added two assists to bring his point total up to 3 on the night. Boone is profilic scorer and a major part of Halifax' success this season, and there really isn't and reason to question why that is. 3. The Lethbridge Lions are one of the most interesting teams to watch in the league as they are fairly new to the competitive scene, and Monkey D. Luffy is their star player for sure. In this game he was a definitive highlight for them and helped them succeed immensely. Without him they would have certainly played a lot worse. Luffy is far and above one of the best young talents in the world right now, and if he keeps showing up for the Lions he could certainly help them contend for a top level position in the upcoming seasons. The biggest question mark for him right now is can he keep it up on his own?

Thinking Inside the Box: Raiders Win in Spite of Penalties
Game 6 saw the Halifax Raiders outshoot the Lethbridge Lions 33-18 despite picking up five minor penalties to Lethbridge's 2. Just nine seconds into the game, Halifax's first line center Dominic Montgomery got sent away for two minutes for hooking. Later that period, Perry Morgan picked up two for tripping. The second period saw Halifax's PIM streak continue, with Montgomery getting two more for hooking (again!), followed by rookies Jaguar Johnson and Ender Zavala picking up a minor each for interference and holding, respectively. Lethbridge finally got in the box in the third period, courtesy of a delay of game call on Benois Minuscule and an interference on Donny McMasters. Both teams stood strong on the penalty kill, and neither team could muster a goal on the power play. All in all, despite the increased time in the box, Halifax remained unaffected and nearly doubled Lethbridge's shot total throughout the game.

Registered Senior Member Three Stars of the Game: Their Stories
1 - Andrej Doskocil The prize of the Halifax Raiders, Andrej Doskocil took care of business on the playmaking end with three assists on the night, scoring the most points of any player in the game. He specifically assisted on the first goal of his career in Gaspard Boone, and even ended up being the game-winner of all things. 2 - Dylan Karlsson Dylan Karlsson was another Raiders force in this one, scoring the only goal of the second period and finishing +2 on the night. His major contribution was the PK minutes he played, finishing with 3:54 minutes and not suffering a single powerplay goal against. 3 - Dickens Makeout-King Makeout-King was probably the most overlooked player in this one other than the three stars. Makeout-King scored a goal and an assist, contributing on both of Lethbridge's goals for the night, even though he was a -1 in the end. He did have five hits, making him the most physically imposing figure in the game. Borůvka Banananák: He Kinda Sucks
Nobody really needed to tell us that Banananák is a terrible hockey player at this point considering where he ended up at the end of the season. He continued to fail in this one, scoring no points and only registering three shots and a single hit. Only one of the three shots occured in the first period, two in the second, and a missed shot in the third period. His only hit was against the Faceoff King, which isn't much to speak of since all he does is take faceoffs. Being such a terrible third-liner must be horrible for the Lions at this point, especially considering they had high hopes for him going into the season.Mr. Faceoffs is Living up to His Name
People were skeptical when Mr. Faceoffs came into the league. I mean, he named himself Mr. Faceoffs of all names just to tell people how great he is at faceoffs. So, it was a surprise to everyone when they saw he was actually pretty good at them to start out. In this game in particular he went 16 for 24, finishing with a 67% faceoff percentage and best among all players with at least 20 faceoffs. This was invaluable on the PK in which he took a good portion of them (and played over 4:30 in that scenario) and frankly shut the Lions down with that contribution alone. Pretty crazy.

Snake-bitten Player of the Night
Perry Morgan was the TSN snake-bitten player of the night here. With a game second most shots on goal (5), Morgan was firing the puck at the net every chance he could touch the puck. In the 3rd period he even amassed four of his five shots in a total of 24 seconds. This man was firing them non-stop. The stats also do not mention the 2 shots that were either blocked or missed the net. If this game was more of an even contest Halifax may have been looking at Morgan to have done a little more with his opportunities. Brick Wall Award Patrice Nadeau wins the brick wall award for this game. Stopping 29 of 32 shots he faced, Nadeau kept this game within reach for the Lions. In fact he kept it a one goal game up until the 3rd period barrage from the Raiders. If there's one shining spot on the Lions tonight it was Nadeau (except for maybe Makeout-King). The Lions will have to find a way to either help their goaltender out in the shot department or take a few more shots on net if they want to succeed. Props to the tendy for keeping them in the game for so long but he couldn't outlast the barrage of shots from the Raiders in the 3rd where they potted 2 goals to seal the deal. Unexpected Impact Player This plaudit goes to Dickens Makeout-King with his two point night potting a goal and an assist. Although he was deployed on Lethbridge's 1st line this game, Makeout-King has not been much of a producer for the Lions this season. Not only did he lead the game in scoring, he also lead the game in hits, beating up on the Raiders in an attempt to do something to help his team. His efforts were not enough though as the Lions still fell in this one. Also, what a name on this guy am I right? Surely the girls are swooning over this man.

Game Recap
The Halifax Raiders took care of business tonight, defeating the Lethbridge Lions by a final score of 4-2. The Raiders have now won back to back games to kick off the season while the Lions sit at .500, sporting a one and one record. The Lions came out firing early and took the early lead on a goal from Dickens Makeout-King. Jules L'Eclair fired a puck that missed the net that was quickly tucked home by DMK. The assists was L'Eclair's first SMJHL point. The Lions held the league throughout a majority of the first period before Jaguar Johnson tied the game just 30 seconds before the end of the first frame. Dylan Karlsson (not of the band Earth) scored the lone tally of the second period before Monkey D. Luffy knotted the score 6 minutes into the third and final frame. It didn't take long for the Raiders to take the lead again as Gaspard Boone put one home near the midway point of the period. Matt Kholin sealed the deal with an empty net goal as the Raiders sealed the deal. The Raiders nearly doubled up on the shot totals outshooting the Lions 33-18. Unsung Hero The unsung hero for the Halifax Raiders in tonights game was center Matt Kholin. Matt finished off the Lions with an empty net goal and was dangerous for the Raiders all night long. Kholin's play was instrumental to helping the team control the pace of the game. Kholin played nearly 20 minutes during the contest and led all players with 6 shots on goal. Kholin was a big part of the Raiders perfect night killing penalties. The American future superstar logged nearly 4 minutes or nearly 20% of his ice-time while Halifax was short-handed. Matt finished the evening winning 60% of his face-off opportunities, further helping with the Raiders large puck possession advantage. There's no doubt that Kholin's strong play had a big impact on the result of the game. Highlights Dickens Makeout-King kicks off the scoring for Lethbridge. The goal was the first of the season for the forward playing in his second season in the SMJHL. The Lions came out on fire and it looked like they may take control of the game early with intense plays like the effort from DMK in front of the net. Makeout-King was a force all night adding an assist and recording 5 hits. A beautiful display of passing puts the Raiders on the board. Troy Reynolds makes an excellent cross-ice pass to an open Andrej Doskocil who freezes the goaltender and finds Jaguar Johnson for the rookies second goal in as many games. Johnson looks like he could be a huge addition to the Raiders scoring attack. Matt Kholin fights for the puck and finishes off the game as the Lions defense is just out of reach from keeping the puck out of their net.

Pro Sports Networks Dick McGruff here following the 6th game of the season between the Halifax Raiders and the Lethbridge Lions. Im standing by with Halifax goaltender Mike McKorsy. Mike you only faced 18 shots tonight, and the majority of the play was in the other end. How do you stay focused in a game like this?
McKorsy: Well Dick I’m not going to lie I was almost bored tonight… I still let in two fuckin goals though so I guess that my focus is something I have to work on. We did a great job pushing play and I thought the guys had a lot of jump. I was super impressed with Dosker (Doskocil), he was buzzing tonight and I think he has made some serious strides this year. McGruff: Thank you Mike, congrats on the big home W.

Unsung Hero
The unsung hero in this game according to me is Mr Faceoff of the Halifax Raiders. He's winning the majority of his faceoffs as well as playing a big amounts of minutes, especially on special teams. He played 4:34 of PK, effectively shutting the Lions out. He assisted on one goal fora total of 1 point. He had 1 shot on goal, however he did not score on it. No hits for him this game, and no blocked shot either, which isn't that flattering, however the team only blocked 3 shots overall in the game so it's fine really. |
