Knights Ground the Falcons in First Meeting of the Season

Falcons Detroit Falcons 1 | 3 Kelowna Knights Knights
Scoring Summary and Recap:
1st Period:
11:22 - Kelowna - PPG Karlstrabe Scholz (1) Assisted By: Sanyi Kocsis (3), Barry Batsbak (5) - Falcons 0 | 1 Knights
Kelowna had their first man advantage of the game after Mark Palicka was penalized for holding Barry Batsbak in the neutral zone, not a great penalty to take and the Knights capitalized after a minute and a half. Following a clean zone entry by Barry Batsbak, the puck was cycled around where it eventually found Scholz who displayed a great individual effort to put home the first goal of the game and his first of the season.
16:56 - Kelowna - PPG Pierre Laroche-Durocher (1) Assisted By: Barry Batsbak (6), Sanyi Kocsis (4) - Falcons 0 | 2 Knights
The Knights once again found themselves on the powerplay after Franz Cooper turned the puck over in the Knights zone, subsequently hooked Guy Zheng and was sent to the box. On this occasion, Kelowna's powerplay took just over a minute to take advantage of Detroit's poor discipline. The Knights entered the zone, cycled the puck, and Laroche-Durocher took two shots on a rebound of a Batsbak shot before slotting home his first of the season and putting his team up 2-0.
17:58 - Detroit - PPG Raino Kyllonen (6) Assisted By:  Franz Cooper (3), Kit Smeb (6) - Falcons 1 | 2 Knights
Special teams was clearly the name of the game here on day 16 of the SMJHL season as Detroit seized the opportunity that Vadim Malichov presented when he was caught hooking Jimmy Cahill in the Falcons zone. Raino Kyllonen retrieved a rare rebound off Alexander Andersson-Grande and roofed it over his right shoulder to bring the Falcons within one.
2nd Period:
No Scoring
3rd Period:
18:15 - Kelowna - Aleksandr Scherbak (3) Assisted By: Nathan Explosion (4) - Falcons 1 | 3 Knights
With two minutes left in the game, Kelowna put the final nail in the coffin of the Falcons by extending their lead to two thanks to their third line. After Scherbak intercepted an errant pass from Aaron Freakin Rome, he made a quick give and go play with Explosion and found himself in alone with the goaltender, and calmly deked backhand and slotted the puck home to secure a Knights victory on home ice.
3 Stars of the Game:
1st Star - Kelowna - Sanyi Kocsis - 2 Assists, 4 Shots on Goal, 2 Hits, 1 Blocked Shot
Kocsis was an all-around powerhouse tonight, assisting on both powerplay goals for the Knights and playing a strong defensive game.
2nd Star - Kelowna - Aleksandr Scherbak - 1 Goal, +1, 2 Shots, 64% Faceoff Wins
Scherbak excelled in the faceoff dot throughout the game and scored the insurance marker goal for the Knights.
3rd Star - Kelowna - Karlstrabe Scholz - 1 Goal, 3 Shots on Goal, 1 Hit, 1 Blocked Shot
Scholz shined in his two-way role tonight as his team held Detroit to just one goal, meanwhile opening the scoring with a great individual play on the powerplay.

Kelowna Power Play: Comment 1
The Kelowna Knights were given three opportunities on the power play in this game and they were dangerous. They struck twice with the man advantage for a 66.6% success rate. The Detroit Falcons were called for a minor penalty at the 9:57 mark of the first period, giving the Knights their first power play chance. Karlstrabe Scholz put the puck past Jakub Hasek shortly after to tally his first goal of the season. A bit later in the first period, Pierre Laroche-Durocher scored his first goal of the season on Kelowna's second power play opportunity of the night. The Knights would go on to win the game, catapulted by their early power play success.

Game-winning Goal: Comment 2
Tonight's game-winning goal came at the 16:56 mark of the opening period. Kelowna had the puck in the offensive third, on their second power play opportunity of the night. After a line change, Aaron Freakin Rome picked up the free puck for Detroit and attempted a pass. Nathan Explosion intercepted the pass in the neutral zone for the Knights and sent a pass into the Detroit zone to a streaking Sanyi Kocsis. Kocsis shot the puck wide of the net and it bounced back off the boards to Barry Batsbak who sent a shot of his own which also missed the net. The puck was collected by Pierre Laroche-Durocher, who fired a shot on net. Jakub Hasek made the save for Detroit, but the rebound fell back to Laroche-Durocher who buried it to make the score two to zero. Detroit would score one goal, making Laroche-Durocher's goal the game winner.

Face Offs: Comment 3
The Kelowna Knights held a slight advantage in face off wins tonight, winning thirty-nine of the seventy-four total face offs. This is a 52.7% face off win percentage, which likely had little impact on the outcome of this game. However, it was Kelowna who pulled out the win. Two of the Knights' three total goals were scored after winning key face offs to gain possession. The majority of Kelowna's face off success came from Nickolas Klaus. The first line center won nineteen of his attempted twenty-six face offs. Klaus won just over 73% of his face offs for the game followed by Aleksandr Scherbak, who won just over 63% of his eleven face offs.

Special Teams

Special teams is very important in hockey because it is an advantage to teams. It is the biggest chance for your team to score a goal and maybe cut the lead or extend the lead. That is what happened in this game. The knights took advantage of it scoring multiple power play goals and that is the reason they won. They had 3 opportunities and went successful for two of them while Detroit had 4 opportunities but scored only once. Kelowna has a great power play and a great penalty kill and that is the reason they won this game which is how you win games.

Worst Play of the Game

There can be dumb plays such as bad passes, dumb shot attempts, bad transitions but of course there can be dumb penalties. And the worst play of the game is of course from the winning team's goaltender. It is a 2-1 game with their team winning again and Alexander Andersson-Grande who is their goaltender was angry for the opponent to be in front of them because that is their job, and he takes a slash by slashing his leg and that is a penalty. That kills possession for his team and gives an advantage to his opponent, bad bad and very bad play.

POTG
The best player of the game is the 1st star of the game, common sense. He is from the winning team and he helped the team win the game, common sense. Who did it? Sanyi Kocsis did it. He assisted on both of the team's first two goals on the power player which shows how dangerous he was with him on the power play with his set up and passing. Without him, it would probably be a tied game because he was a major factor for those two goals. Sanyi Kocsis is the player of the game and kelowna be thankful.

Comment 1: A Pair of Firsts for the Defense -- It took Karlstraße Scholz and Pierre Laroche-Durocher until the twelfth game of the season to score their first goals for the Knights (and on the same night, no less), but that hasn't kept them off the scoresheet up until now. Scholz had already registered seven assists, and Laroche-Durocher two prior to this matchup, and it's not a surprise to see them both get that first goal of their own here a dozen games into the season. If Scholz's development keeps up at the steady pace it has been, we expect to continue to see his name appearing on the scoresheet as the season progresses.

Comment 2: Mind The Net -- Despite a messy slashing penalty (served by Bobby Sharp at 18:54 of the second period), Alexander Andersson-Grande looked very sharp in goal for Kelowna for virtually the entire game. He made 17 stops on 18 shots, the lone goal scored by Detroit on the power play by Raino Kyllonen late in the first period. This was Andresson-Grande's first start for the Knights but his second win (he previously entered a game in which Kelowna was down in the third period, and stopped all seven shots he faced in that game as the Knights came back to grab a shootout win). It's obviously still very early to make any bold predictions, but the young netminder shows real promise.
