Outlaws Escape the Militia in Montreal

Game 62: Anaheim Outlaws  Outlaws vs. Montreal Militia  Militia

Anaheim (5) - Montreal (3)

By this point in the season, the early storylines have been established and we've generally got a sense of who stands where in the scheme of the league this season. This matchup featured two teams battling it out in the middle of the pack, with Anaheim entering the game at 5-3-4 (14 points) and Montreal at 8-3-1 (17 points). The teams were trending in opposite directions, however, with the Outlaws having won their previous 2 games and Montreal on a 2 game skid. That slide continued for the Militia, as they fell behind early and never recovered. The action on the ice filled the box score, with 8 total goals and 11 minor penalties. The Outlaws will leave this one having extended their win streak to 3, while Montreal sees their losing streak fall to 3

Period 1

A quiet period through the first 17 minutes took a turn for the exciting in the last three, as Yoshimitsu McCloud scored his third goal of the young season, assisted by defensemen Thomas Speardane (7) and Osbert Whacker (8). Two minutes later, McCloud picked up his third assist of the campaign, joining Gustav Steen (4) in assisting on Seemu Telanne's rookie-leading 5th goal of the season. End of period: Anaheim 2 - Montreal 0

Period 2

The late goals in the first seem to have sparked momentum that both teams carried into the second. At the five-minute mark, fourth-liner Gunnar Petrov saw his second shot of the period get past Montreal goaltender Low Temp to give the Outlaws a commanding 3-0 lead. The Outlaws eased off the gas a little bit, committing minor penalties at the 7 and 11 minute marks. Montreal made them pay on the second, scoring their first goal of the game on the power play: Pavel Pivonka picking up his first of the year, assisted by Kristoffer Svensson (8). Matching penalties at the 15 minute mark saw Jerry Mander and Griffith Cadwalader head to the box, and Anaheim scored their fourth goal of the game a minute later, courtesy of Collin Gibbles' 7th of the year, assisted by Max Rockatansky (7) and Mathias Seger (10). That was enough for Montreal's staff, who pulled Low Temp and inserted Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova in net. As is not uncommon, the change in net gave a spark to the Militia offense, and within 10 seconds, Kristoffer Svensson picked up his 7th goal of the year, assisted by Andreas Kvalheim (8) and Olin O'Dowd (1). End of period: Anaheim 4 - Montreal 2

Period 3

Anaheim goalie Tibuk Soonika maintained his focus in the third period, which served as a quiet finale after the second period's excitement. Rookie Marc Hagan knocked in his 2nd goal of the year for Montreal, assisted by Dirk Von Grimmelshausen (1) and Griffith Cadwalader (4), to pull the Militia within one. But Anaheim's defense buckled in and Soonika wasn't forced to make another save for the remainder of the period. Gibbles added his 2nd goal of the game to seal the deal in the final minute for Anaheim. Final score: Anaheim 5 - Montreal 3

Three stars of the game
1 - Yoshimitsu McCloud (ANA) - McCloud's goal in the first got the party started and he assisted on ANA's second goal a minute later
2 - Collin Gibbles (ANA) - Gibbles scored the two late goals for Anaheim to help put this one away
3 - Mathias Seger (ANA) - Seger picked up 2 assists and 2 hits, in addition to leading his team in time on ice

Three jogeys of the game
1 - Low Temp (MTL) - Montreal's backup will stay in that role after this performance, letting in 4 goals on 12 shots and getting pulled in the second
2 - Chuck Crutchfield (MTL) - Crutchfield saw 20 minutes on the ice and racked up just 1 shot while contributing 2 minor penalties en route to a -3
3 - Mason Hudson (MTL) - Hudson must have used up his goals in his recent hat trick, as the winger didn't even get off a shot in this one

Where's Westbroek? Was he scratched? Might as well legally change his name to WestUseless. That's what he's been good for this year. This is a huge disappointment really. How the fuck did anyone think of ever drafting this guy? This guy drifts around like he has no business being in the SMJHL. This guy wants to be in the SHL? We'd have to wait for 4 seasons probably before this guy gets to the SHL, and even then he'd probably just get sent back to the SMJHL. This is the laziest player I've ever seen.

Comment 1: 3 Stars in depth. 1st Star - Yoshimistu McCloud. 1 goal on 1 shot, 1 assist and a +1 for a game where he only logged a little over 8 minutes. This was a good night for the young ninja McCloud. Everything he touched seemed to turn to gold, very deserving of the first star of the game. 2nd star - 2 goals on 3 shots with a plus 2 for the game. He netted two late goals that helped the Outlaws cruise to a victory. 3rd star - Mathias Seger. Seger was all over the ice, recording 2 assist, a couple hits, and over 22 minutes of playing time. He's on the ice for all situations and deserves the 3rd star for this game.

Comment 2: Rookies. The rookies for both teams were on display during this game. This was a big rookie class, so it is unsurprising that this many rookies are contributing early. Gunnar Petrov, Gustav Steen, Seemu Telanne, and Slap McShotty all contributed to the offense for the Anaheim Outlaws. The Outlaws, being a rookie heavy team depend on getting contribution from their young guys. While, Marc Hagan and Dirk Von Grimmelshausen both contributed for the Militia in the game. To have this many rookies contributing so early in the season for both teams shows how talented this draft class was this year. Looking forward to seeing big things from all these young rookies.

Comment 3: Opening Goal. The opening goal by the Anaheim Outlaws was scored by Yoshimitsu McCloud, let's break down how he scored. Rockatansy wins the initial faceoff deep in the Montreal zone, he is able to get the puck back to Thomas Speardane on the point. He shoots towards the net, but misses just wide. The puck bounces off the boards, right onto McCloud's stick. He fires it towards the net, but Defender Nikolai Evans lays his body down to block the shot. Oh no, but McCloud gets the puck off the block. He shoots.... HE SCORES. McCloud buries the puck in the back of the net to open the scoring here. Anaheim takes a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Anaheim took the lead here and never looked back. This was the start of a killer day for McCloud, as he wound up being the first star of the game.

Worst player ever?

When Dylon McIntyre went to the rink tonight, he was thrilled and absolutely motivated. But he didn't expect to be treated the way he did. It is absolutey normal that guys get scratched during the course of a season, but Dylon McIntyre played are ridiculously low 0:43 the entire game. He didn't even manage to play one minute the entire game. That is one, maybe two shifts. There is no trust in him anymore by his coach and you can see it when you take a look at his icetime. It is no surprise Dylon McIntyre contributed nothing to his team's success.

(Comment 2)
Goalie Problem?

If you take a look at the shots, the game itself was pretty even. The Montreal Militia trailed the Anaheim Outlaws by onle one shot. So you have to ask: What was the difference between the two teams that evening. And if you look at the goalies, you could find the answer - the Montreal goalie was just a little bit worse than the Anaheim goalie. Soonika of Anaheim saved 16 of 19 shots for a 84.2 Save %. Not very good. But then you look at Low Temp from the Militia and you think of Soonika as a world beater. Low Temp saved only 8 shots from 12 and was quickly replaced by Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova in the 2nd period.

(Comment 3)
Very balanced

The game itself probably was one of the most balanced games of the season. Just take a look at the stats. Anaheim had 20 shots while Montreal had 19. Anaheim had 16 hits while Montreal had 15. Anaheim won 32 faceoffs, Montreal won 31. Montreal scored once on the Powerplay, Anaheim didn't score at all. But in the end, there is only one stat that counts and that is goals scored. And despite a game of two very equal teams who fought a hard fight for 60 minutes, it was the Outlaws who had the edge here, scoring 5 goals while Montreal only scored 3. And in the end, this is all that counts.

Top 3 Gritters of the Game
1. Andreas Kvalheim (MTL) - The Montreal forward smashed bodies against Anaheim, collecting 5 hits. An absolutely dominating performance in a very physical game. No PIMs or blocked shots though, but he was the best gritter tonight.
2. Osbert Whacker (ANA) - He collected 3 hits and a blocked shot, as well as 4 PIMs. Unfortunately, his PIMs were bad ones, not aggressive and physical fouls. They were both for tripping, actually. Sad.
3. Jerry Mander (ANA) - The good: He had 3 hits, really being physical on the ice. The bad: He had 4 PIMs, nearly back to back, and they were bad. Hooking and holding. Jesus.

Audi Star of the Game: Colton Gibbles Outlaws
With 2 goals including the game winner, tonight's Audi Star of the Game is Anaheim's Colton Gibbles. The second year forward has been one of Anaheim's best producer's all season and tonight was no different as the star forward scored twice on three shots to lead his team to victory. Gibbles was a key player for the Outlaws on both ends of the ice having played on the power play and having helped kill off the Outlaws' penalties as well. Gibbles was second in ice time amongst Outlaws forwards and the coach's faith in him paid off as he led a very strong forward group to victory against Montreal.

Tide Flop of the Game: Chuck Crutchfield Militia
Tonight's Tide Flop of the Game is Montreal's Chuck Crutchfield. 2nd on the team in ice time, Crutchfield was incredibly poor and a huge part of Montreal's loss. Chucky finished the game at -3 with 1 shot, no hits and no blocked shots. On top of that, he spent almost 6 minutes on a power play that went 1 for 6 and was practically useless. Crutchfield's 4 penalty minutes didn't help his case tonight as even though Anaheim didn't score on any of their power plays, Crutchfield still had more penalty minutes than the rest of his team combined and gave Anaheim 4 extra minutes to control the play and the puck and hold on to their lead.

Tesla Key to the Game: Goaltending
Tonight's Tesla Key to the Game is goaltending, it is often something that can make or break a team's game and tonight proved to be one of those nights. The shots tonight ended 20-19 in favour of the Outlaws, in a low shooting game like that you want your goaltending to be sharp as opportunities to answer your opponent's goals will be hard to come from. Goaltending just didn't favour the Militia tonight as their starting goalie Low Temp was pulled towards the end of the 2nd period after allowing his 4th goal on less than 12 shots. Volkova came in and was decent in relief but still allowed a goal on the 8 shots he faced allowing Anaheim to grab the insurance goal they needed. On the other end, Tibuk Soonika stopped 16 of 19 shots getting the job done for the Outlaws in their win tonight.

Comment #3:

We're going to look at a couple of key factors in tonight's game:

Broken Crutch: Chuck Crutchfield is someone the Militia lean on heavily and he was inadequate in this game. Posting a -3 in over 20 minutes of icetime, Crutch was held pointless and also racked up 4 minutes in penalties. Although the Outlaws didn't capitalize when he was in the box, having a negative impact while on the ice and then taking yourself off the ice and leaving your team shorthanded is never a good thing. They'll need a better effort from him.

Goal-in Gibbles: Colin Gibbles has been a big contributor thus far for the Outlaws, starting this season at a 2 PPG pace and slowing down a bit but still burying the puck when it matters. Picking up 2G in this game, Colin shows that he can step up and deliver when his team needs it. For a team that doesn't have a ton of high end talent, Gibbles could be what they need to make a deep run this season.

Buddy, talking about invisibility is comical coming from you. You know what's more invisible than Westbroek on the ice? Khan Smeb. I've never seen him on SMJHL ice, probably because he's too fucking bad and toxic to get signed by a team. Shut your whore mouth.

At least I don't let my horribleness onto the ice unlike you. Keep dreaming buddy. The ice is stained brown whenever you skate on it.

All the things that went wrong for Montreal

If we look at the stats we see a lot of players on the Montreal roster that had a minus next to their name - in fact if you played for Montreal and didn't score or assist on a goal, it's almost guaranteed to have at least a -1 or sometimes even a -3. Rare exceptions excluded.
The goaltending didn't work very well either: Low Temp had a horrible night and was pulled after giving up goal number 4 in the second period. Why even wait that long? It gave the team a quick boost, because Montreal scored their second goal of the night just seconds after the goalie change, but honestly, at this point the ship had pretty much sailed. Not even their third goal at the very end of period 3 could help them turn the game around.
In terms of face-off wins and shots on goal the two teams were pretty even, but Montreal simply couldn't score. They only scored on one of their six power play chances. Then again, their penalty kill was perfect, otherwise this night could've been a lot worse.
