![]() Jaakko Järvinen played for the Blazers during the S47 SMJHL Prospect Showcase and he was able to provide an immediate impact for his new team.
Coming into the SMJHL as a lockdown, defensive defenseman, Jaakko was surprised to see how much of an impact he would have on the scoring sheets. “My main focus is to go out there and stop the other team from scoring in any way possible. Blocking shots, lifting sticks, throwing some checks, whatever it takes is what I’m willing to do. The fact that I was able to provide some assists and help my team get on the board during some of the games was just an added bonus” said Jaakko in regards to his newfound abilities. And provide assistance on the scoring sheet is exactly what he did. Jaakko ended the regular season of the prospects showcase with 20 points, leaving him number three among all defenseman, and a massive 17 assists, which was number two overall for all players. 6 of those 20 points were also during the power play which left Jaakko tied 1st overall for that stat as well. “I’m really happy that the coach trusted me enough to send me out for a lot of minutes during the power play. Our group had a lot of chemistry and we were able to score a lot of goals while up a man.” Talking about minutes played, Jaakko was fourth overall with 498 total minutes throughout the 20 games played. This left him with almost 25 minutes of ice-time per game, showing again the confidence that the team had in him day in and day out. Jaakko also isn’t afraid to put his body in front of some big shots, blocking a total of 24 shots leaving him in the top 10 overall. Despite Jaakko’s and the team’s best efforts, they finished the regular season of the prospect showcase with a record of 8-10-2 after many close, hard-fought battles. This left them with a first round matchup against the Wranglers, who the Blazers had many close games against during the showcase. The Blazers went down early in game one and were never able to fully recover and lost 2-3. Game two was an overtime thriller that the Blazers were able to win and force a game three. However, the Blazers just couldn’t match the Wranglers intensity in game 3 and would lose the final game by a score of 3-5, ending their time in the prospect showcase. Despite a stellar start to the tournament, Jaakko was left of the scoresheet in the playoffs. “I don’t think I got in my own head or anything like that, the chances just weren’t there. I focused on my defensive game and the Wranglers didn’t leave any openings and definitely didn’t make it easy on us. This will just be another learning point for me and hopefully the team that chooses me sees what I am capable of.” With such a great showing overall for the young Jaakko it will be exciting to see what the future holds for him and how his game will evolve. ![]() Registered S27, S29 Challenge Cup Champion
