Press conference for Josef Novotný

These past few days have been a whirlwind for Josef, first applying to the league and getting his visa to play in the league, then becoming a free agent. As he waited for the league’s waiting period to come to a close, he had been in touch with a few different team’s General Managers and an hour after his waiting period came to an end, he had made a decision to join the team Kelowna Knights by signing a contract with them.

He had to dreamed of this day for the longest time since he knew he wanted to be a hockey player, and after coming in after his first practice with his new team, Josef is met by a few media personal that wanted to run questions by him, ready to take on any questions they might pose to him.

Your thoughts on playing for a team called the Knights? ((You know how I feel @BDonini :D ))

"In the Czech Republic, our word for Knights is Rytíři. I don't really have a strong opinion on names of Teams, and it seems like an honorable one that I am proud to be apart of."

Why choosing the Knoots over any other teams? ((@Briedaqueduc ))

"It was honestly a very tough decision, I spoke with a few different General Managers and they all were very nice to me and answered all of my questions and there are a lot of great teams out there that I would be honored to be apart of, but Kelowna's GM swept me away by the way he spoke to me and laid out the plan for me and the team overall. It's a very promising future and I cannot wait to play in the my first game!"

Which kind of player do you wish to develop into and What are your expectations from the team? ((@micool132 ))

"Playing in the minor leagues of the Czech Republic, I was always trying to go for net and overall I feel like that is how I am building myself as a player to be, a goal scorer, which I feel like every forward is mostly trying to be. I really want to focus on honing my skills on the face off and chipping in more to be a bigger benefit towards my team."

"As a team, I need the support a player needs from their team mates and from the higher ups. That is really my only expectation I have for the team, being there for me as I will be there for them. I hope I can prove myself to my team mates and the General Manager for believing in me."

What are your goals and expectations this season?

"First, not getting a serious injury! My main goal is just to work on my form and skills, I obviously want to be on the first line and playing all game, but realistically I want to work on myself as well as being a benefit towards my team mates. I want at least one goal this season, would make me absolutely ecstatic!"

What are your best qualities and how will they help this team?

"I have to say one of my best qualities is I am really friendly to all people and I try to be as accommodating as possible. On ice, I am always a team player first above myself and will strive to achieve all of the goals the team sets before me, no matter if I am on the 4th line and getting 2 minutes a game or the top line. I strive to be a hard working player and will show it on the ice."

How was it negotiating with multiple teams as a free agent?

"It was my first experience as a player in negotiating with teams, and I am sure it is a lot different than being drafted on a team where it is sort of out of your hands. Honestly, I was surprised to the amount of responses I got and different teams fighting over me, it meant a lot to me and I am glad I made a great choice in coming to Kelowna."

What are your opinions on dogs? Favorite kinds?

"I love dogs and actually own a German Shepard back home! Once I get settled down I plan on bringing him over but for now he is staying with my parents. I named him Jan, after Jan Žižka, a Czech national hero for most of us. He is three years old and I miss him a bunch."

What can your teammates do to support your development on the ice?

"Be there for me, on and off the ice. I try to do everything myself and fend for myself, but there are times when I do need help and I will ask for it when I need it. Pointing out my flaws definitely helps, I won't always be able to tell what I am doing wrong and having the support of some of the veterans on the team to help me out would be tremendous!"

"Haha, I have never had a nickname before and I love it! Go for it!!"
