Now that we're a quarter of the way into the season, the Armada are prepared to make their official S47 captaincy announcement.

First, a look at which team names actually would have captains in real life.

For Sure Yes
Armada - 100% yes. A fleet of battle boats would 100% have captains, no room for debate here.
Militia - I won't pretend to be familiar with the Canadian military, but I'm pretty sure "captain" is a rank in the US military so maybe the rank exists in Canada as well
Whalers - Hunting whales is pretty fucked up but if it's going to happen, it's probably on a ship with a captain

Gotta Brush Up On My Feudal History
Knights - If there's one thing I remember about the feudal system, it's that those fuckers loved rank and order. Knights was a rank, I certainly remember that. They were below lords and above serfs. This is how we learned it in the US, but I'm sure there was a lot more nuance and complexity to the situation than we learned in 10th grade. I'm sure there weren't just 4 ranks in the entire system, right? It's possible there were subgroups and captains and shit like that?

They Could But They Shouldn't
Raiders and Outlaws - In theory, a gang of outlaws could have a captain-like leader, but a group of people whose entire day-to-day existence is predicated on breaking the law and sticking it to the man shouldn't follow bureaucratic rules like having an official captain.

Doubtful But Debatable
Lions - This is a pretty tough one. Lions do roam in packs (i think?) and surely there are alpha males that sort of lead the pack. This is like a de facto captain, but it's probably just the largest one so i'm not sure how much nuance the decision has. more of a "big poppa" than a "captain" imo.

For Sure Not
Falcons - Animal kingdom doesn't really have captains, and especially not a species that rolls solo
Scarecrows - They aren't alive, so
Raptors - Worst case name interpretation they're extinct, best case interpretation they're birds of prey and see: Falcons


Ok, anyway, why are we here? Right, captaincy announcement. Time to announce the S47 Anchorage Armada Captain and Alternates:

A - Eko van Otter - @"bwrabbitt"

I don't really want to discuss myself here, but I want to note that there's currently a ton of confusion throughout the league over whether Eko van Otter is an actual otter than plays hockey or a guy that plays hockey who just really likes otters. I will be documenting this in full and clearing the confusion on this matter once and for all when EVO get called up to the SHL.

A - Peter Larson - @Tomasnz 

A reliable and ever-positive figure in the locker room, Peter Larson earns the other alternate captain position for S47. Not only is Larson one of the top (the top) goalies in the SMJHL, he's like a coach on the ice, always looking for ways to help the team improve. Another notable point that, luckily for Larson, didn't get in his way during this vote, is his utter inability to spell anything correctly. The only letter he'll need to know now is A. (he might still get it wrong.)

C - Olivier Cloutier - @Jenny

This year's captain is Olivier Cloutier, who ran away with the captaincy vote and was a near-unanimous selection by his peers in what will likely be his last year suiting up for the Armada. Cloutier has been an extremely steady contributor, both on and off the ice, and is no doubt a great leader for this team. Cloutier, beloved by all, is known for sniping goals and helping rookies. Better at spelling, too.
