WFT's: Make the Case (S47)
#91

Quote:Calgary's Otis B. Driftwood could do the unthinkable and win the scoring title as a defenseman.

Against. Driftwood's numbers are absolutely ridiculous but I feel he cannot keep this up. D-men can't really 'carry' the same way as forwards when it comes to pure offense and his numbers will rely on Calgary's forwards cycling through and putting up the numbers. If the Dragons surge? There's a chance but I do not feel like that will happen.

Quote:By S49 the Chicago Syndicate will climb past New Orleans as the better expansion franchise.

Against. There would need to be a lot of factors going right for Chicago but I will only look at their current rosters and I just do not see it. New Orleans is a play-off lock and are expected to make appearances all through S49. Chicago will need at least until S50 to start seeing superstar results from their draftees.
Quote:Currently boasting a .571 winning pct.. The San Fransisco Pride will not make the playoffs.
Against. They're finally making it in after a long break. This team has struggled mightily through out its' history but very few can deny that their defensive corps is strong. In fact I consider it to be promising and one of the brightest in the league. Doing the numbers, the teams behind them are unlikely to surpass them.

Quote:Recent trades have pushed the Los Angeles Panthers out of post season aspirations until S51.
Against. Perhaps not expecting to make the playoffs, the 5 team format allows teams to get through every now and then when they normally would not. Lots of teams have hot streaks and can be set up to make the playoffs after a lucky stretch. I expect the Panthers to at least feature in the play-offs once. Plus they have Borromini Cannellini, future American hero, who is tearing it up in juniors.

Currently boasting a .571 winning pct.. The San Fransisco Pride will not make the playoffs.

AGAINST

The Pride have a goaltender and defense corps which can match up against anyone, and with a core of young players including Brogen, Muerto, Moyer, Reaper, Metcalf, and King who have all developed into solid players, they are competitive in most games and are finally getting the scoring they needed from their offense to move up the standings. I have no doubt they will continue to fight for the 3/4/5 spot and break the playoff slump, especially considering the lackluster play of the teams out of the picture right now.

Calgary's Otis B. Driftwood could do the unthinkable and win the scoring title as a defenseman.

IFFY - I don't think he'll win the scoring title but he is on pace to break the single-season assist record which has stood for 20+ seasons and that would be awesome!

Against: Calgary's Otis B. Driftwood could do the unthinkable and win the scoring title as a defenseman.

History is just not on Driftwood's side. In the SHL, there are very few defensemen win the scoring title and those who did were extraordinary players. Driftwood is a great defenseman, but he just can't keep up this current pace. A forward will pull away in the coming days and Driftwood will drift behind the pack. He should still lead the defenceman and solidify his case for the Stevens, but scoring title? No.

Absolutely. Calgary has had some great runs at history over the years as far as single performance records go. He relies on assists, but the team only has one 10+ goal scorer and he still has these impressive stats, so there's no reason to think he will stop accumulating points

I gotta agree with this one, but it also isn't a bad thing. With LAP trading the way they have, they are amassing some decent picks in future drafts, gearing themselves towards an obvious run in a few seasons, letting their current and future prospects become the future stars of this team, similar to how Manhattan built before they traded to bring in some pieces.

Code:
The Best juniors player in the world... Espen Knutsen Jr. of Detroit.

Against: The statement itself is very difficult to agree with. Best in the world. What does that even mean? Right now? In general? Ever? I don't think any player stands out so much that you could call him "best in the world". There might be some very good ones and Espen is possibly one of them, but I wouldn't go as far and call him the best in the world. We certainly don't have enough data to support this either. And we don't even know how good someone has to be in order to be defined as "the best". I'm simply against it, because there's no possible way to define this and perhaps I'm also against such a statement in general. One thing I could agree with however, is that he's not the worst player in the world.

Code:
The SMJHL has it right with the 350 TPE cap.

Against: It's not unusual that a player reaches the cap after his/her first full season and then is stuck with 350 TPE. What's really the point here? Especially since players usually spend more than one season the in the SMJHL. There's no way to improve and everyone 2nd year or higher is at the same level. Either raise the cap every year or find another way to make the game more interesting/competitive. It's very easy this way for players to lose interest and that's unfortunate.

For - With the additions of Artemi Berezin and Sophia Bennett the best team in the SHL is now.. the West Kendall Platoon

Since adding these two the Platoon have been on a tear with a couple of honest to god blow out victories. Their goalie has found his game, they have a pretty solid defensive corp, and with the two most recent additions the top level talent to always have a threat to score on the ice.

For... Otis has been an absolute stud all season long. Many people probably think there's not a chance, but I believe in my teammate and think he can do it! Plus, it couldn't happen to a better guy.

For! There's absolutely no reason as to why his streak should stop any time soon. He's been an absolute king of the puck this season, and it doesn't matter who the Drgons are playing, he's ready to stop them in their tracks and put it in their net!

The St. Louis Scarecrows have officially moved passed the Kelowna Knights as the best SMJHL team of the S40's.

For. I was drafted to STL in S44 as a first gen and I have literally never seen any other team hoist the cup.  Who are these Kelowna jabronis claiming to be the best?

Code:
The SMJHL has it right with the 350 TPE cap.

For.  I stayed down a third season because I loved being on the best team of the S40's, I had to pay a two season tax of being totally stagnant but I wasn't forced into that decision.  I was lucky enough to be drafted to a team that would take me whenever I was ready, so I never experienced a problem of being forced to stagnate in the SMJHL.
I'm in favor of a solution where players can reasonably graduate after 2 seasons, staying down longer than that would be a choice they make knowing that their build would stagnate for a while.  If there is a problem with teams not accepting third season players, we should look to resolve that rather than adjusting the cap.  Specifically, I like approaches that promote using actives rather than inactives (maybe faster decay of inactives, or increased cost) in order to make more room in the big league.

If there is any amount of cap adjustment, it could be to make the growth last a little longer into the second season, I was capped after my first offseason, and anecdotally I think it's pretty common.  We have a ton of data nerds here who could tell you the average TPE growth rate, and what increase would last the average player into half of their second season.

Against: Currently boasting a .571 winning pct.. The San Fransisco Pride will not make the playoffs.

While the Pride have been a steady bubble team for the last few seasons, I think there chance of making the playoffs will largely be inflated by only needing to be better than three teams in the Panthers, Jets and Chiefs all of whom are going through some level of rebuild and may not have the consistent firepower or goaltending to push them over the edge. The Western Conference is largely top heavy at the moment, so in order to remain in the playoff picture, the Pride need to simply be competitive with a couple rebuilding teams which should not be as hotly contested as it may have been in past years due to the continual development of the team with effective drafting and player growth. And at some point the team needs to stop sucking, right?

What we see here is that West Kendall made a nice jump from 7 to 3 after Gordie's last comparison (S46 comparison)

Two teams are still considered to be better, which are Buffalo and New Orleans. None of West Kendall lines is considered to be the best, although they got depth with their 3rd line being 2nd overall.

What also is remarkable is the fact that the team severely lacks some grit, i.e. checking. The only thing West Kendall really excels in compared to the other teams is skating, so no i wouldn't say they are the best team now, but they made good strides.

This is the first time I've seen this and it's freaking awesome

Calgary's Otis B. Driftwood could do the unthinkable and win the scoring title as a defenseman.

For. I am all for this, because I think this is Slappy? If so, he is one of the best dudes on the site and is very experienced, winning an astonishing 0 Cups with WKP but at the same time having an awesome centre. If anyone can do it, it's him.

Calgary's Otis B. Driftwood could do the unthinkable and win the scoring title as a defenseman.

For: Slappy is a site veteran with the knowledge to keep his player's build in perfect tune with GM Steelhead's strategies so there is absolutely no reason this dynamic duo can't keep this run going and we see Driftwood atop the leaderboard at the end.

Who isn't for Slappy winning the title, honestly. But can he survive Simon's thorny shaft? Probably.
