Militia Montreal Militia vs Detroit Falcons Falcons
SMJHL S47 Game 5

Pregame Warm Up

This was the first game of the season for both of these clubs. Detroit got the first pick in the draft and are expecting a run at the cup. Montreal had an abundance of picks and are playing 3 rookies tonight. Montreal Fans seemed to have traveled well for this outing as they have a cheering section behind Detroit's Goaltender. These two clubs both have a high flying offensive attack so we expect to see more scoring than usual in this one. Although both goaltenders are capable of standing on their heads since this is the first game of the season we might see some nerves or jitters as they call them. The top offensive line for Detroit are three players everyone should keep their eyes on. If Raino Kyllonen, Josh Driver and Espen Knutsen Jr. start clicking this game could be over in a hurry. Especially with the hometown crowd behind them. For Montreal the second line is one that is underrated and not to be taken lightly. The combination of Hagan and Truong alone can be lethal but add in a guy like Jaguar Johnson and I wouldn't be surprised if they move up to the first line by the end of the season. You have to be fearful of a guy with the name of Jaguar to begin with!

Periord 1

Both teams looked a little sluggish coming out of the gate which was a bit unexpected for game one of the season. If you wanted to be positive about the display we were all witnessing, you could say they were going through a feeling out period. In my opinion play was a little sloppy or undisciplined. I think Montreal proved my point as they took the first two penalties. One for hooking at 4:29 and one for tripping at 10:45. The rookie, Zarley Zalapski got his stick stuck inside of Lex Peters skate and as Peters fell to the ice the ref blew the whistle. Detroit was unable to connect on either of those power play chances. At 15:09 O'Dowd made a two line pass over to Jaguar who threaded the needle between two Falcons and James Truong hammered it home for his first goal of the season which silenced the Detroit arena. In the old days a pass like that would never have been allowed. Montreal insisted on one more penalty for hooking at 18:02 but Detroit missed again going 0-3 so far. The teams went back to the locker room with the Militia up 1-0.

Periord 2

Detroit started with 2 seconds of advantage left but that was irrelevant. The Falcons seemed like a different team in the second and were flying around with speed and a purpose. The got the game leveled at 7:16 and Josh Driver's goal at 11:41 put Detroit up 2-1. The crowd was really starting to get into it as the arena was shaking. The Militia would have a difficult time handling the high flying falcons but a hooking penalty at 16:44 to Josh Driver would prove to be a fatal mistake. The Commander for the Militia would score the power play goal, with only five seconds left on the man advantage at 18:39. A meltdown in the defensive zone for Detroit would allow rookie Zarley Zalapski to get his first career assist as he passed the puck over to Marc Hagan who got it to the Jaguar who racked up his first goal of the night and seaon! Hagan was feeling it as this was his second assist in less than a minute! Detroit seemed a bit dazed as they headed into the tunnel down 3-2.

Periord 3

The first 11 minutes of the last period would get out of control with nothing but scoring.
This reporter can not even begin to describe what took place and I think the stats can speak for themselves.

6. Detroit Falcons , Espen Knutsen Jr. 1 (Raino Kyllonen 1, Scott Niedermayer Jr. 2) at 0:58
7. Detroit Falcons , Espen Knutsen Jr. 2 (Raino Kyllonen 2) at 2:44
8. Montreal Militia , Commander Shepard 2 (Griffith Cadwalader 1, Kristoffer Svensson 1) at 5:05
9. Detroit Falcons , Oleg Scoreov 1 (Lex Peters 1) at 7:14
10. Montreal Militia , Marc Hagan 1 (Keegan Angello 1, Stolp Skottson 1) at 8:25 (PP)
11. Montreal Militia , Jaguar Johnson 2 (James Truong 1, Marc Hagan 3) at 10:22

Game Recap

The game was a high flying affair with the road team ending up on top: 6 to 5. The Militia would end up a perfect 2 for 2 on the Power Play and another perfect 4 for 4 on the Penalty Kill! This was a bit unfortunate for the Detroit faithful but they seemed in good spirits for losing as they talked about how great the game was if you loved to watch a bunch of scoring. This game had 11 goals total and plenty of action. For the hockey purists out there, it wasn't their cup of tea but I wouldn't doubt if we see a show of defense and goaltending in the future from either of these two clubs.

1. PLAYER VS. PLAYER

Kristoffer Svensson Militia vs. Falcons Raino Kyllonen

Let's compare the two first line centers for both teams, Svensson of the Militia and Kyllonen of the Falcons. Let's start with what these centerman were put on the ice to do, win face-offs. Kristoffer won 15 of his 26 faceoffs to Raino's 18 out of 30. Svensson ended the game with a 58% to Kyllonen's 60%, both centers did well in this category but Raino comes out slightly ahead. Faceoffs category goes to  Falcons

Now let's compare the two in the hits and shots blocked category. For Svensson of the Militia, he accumulated just one hit in the game and wasn't around anywhere to block a shot. Kyllonen of the Falcons however, put up 2 hits and 2 blocked shots in the game. Hits/ Shots Blocked goes once again to  Falcons

In the points department, it's no surprise here who won once again as Kristoffer put up 1 assist in the game to Raino's 2 assists. neither player scored a goal this game but once again the Points department goes to  Falcons

It should be noted both players played similar ice time with Svensson having about 10 seconds more.

Better player: Raino Kyllonen

2. GAME CHANGING MISTAKE

The game changing mistake for today's game will be the terrible hooking penalty by Josh Driver at 16:44 of the second period. Up to this point Detroit was winning the game by one goal, 2-1. Driver's penalty caused Montreal to produce on the power play opportunity and allowed the game to become tied at 2-2 when Commander Shepard scored at 18:39 just 5 second before the 2 minute minor would have been over. This power play goal undoubtably lifted the Militia's spirts and gained momentum allowing the next goal for them come just one minute later and end the second period ahead 3-2 going into the third with the lead.

3. THREE STAR ANALYSIS

Let's take a look at each tonights 3 stars of the game and see why they earned the acknowledgement.

1.  Militia Jaguar Johnson

Johnson was able to tally up 3 points in his stellar performance this game. He was credited with 2 goals and 1 assist today, including the game winning goal late in the third period. As if that wasn't enough, he also played the body around racking up 3 hits from the second line.

2. Militia Marc Hagan

It's absolutely no surprise Hagan was credited with the second star tonight as he is centered on Johnson's line and Jaguar owes some of his success to Hagan's performance tonight. Hagan put up an amazing 4 points in this game with 1 goal and 3 assists and a +2 rating. Both of Jaguar Johnson's two goals came with assists from Marc Hagan including a secondary assist on the game winning goal.

3. Falcons  Espen Knutsen Jr.

Espen Knutsen Jr. is the only Detroit Falcon to crack the 3 stars of the game tonight in their loss. Espen tallied up 3 points, just as many as the Militia's Johnson who earned the first star of the game although his goals didn't lead to the game winner. Espen put up 2 goals plus 1 assist in the game where he opened the third period for Detroit with two back to back goals less than a minute apart, putting Detroit up 4-3 at the time. Espen is on the first line with Kyllonen and Driver for Detroit.

Comment 1:

This game is just a simple tale of mathematics. From the beginning the goal was clear. Attempt to prove the equation of 1+2+3=6.  Now in the first period both teams were off to a great start.  Detroit and Montreal both agreed that the first number of the equation was 1.  Throughout the first period after both teams decided it was 1, they argued a bit more before they locked it in.  At the start of the second period, Detroit decided to try 1 again because it worked the first time. A few moments later they figured out that 1 wasn't enough and tried 2. At this point Halifax realized they could just do the same thing Detroit did and got 2 also.  In the third period both Halifax and Detroit tried 2 at first, and argued with themselves until at the last moment Halifax changed their number to 3. At the end Detroit got 1+2+2=5 and Halifax ended up with 1+2+3=6.  Detroit was just 1 short.

Comment 2:

Both teams are off to a start of a big season for them.  They looked even throughout the game other than 1 thing that may have cost Detroit the game in the end.  Powerplays.  Detroit was 0/4 vs Halifax's 2/2.  This is a difference that Detroit could not get over and they would end up losing the game by 1.  Detroit's lineup for the power-play's looked strong other than the Rookie Travis Bitties with no SMJHL experience or 1 year player Gabster TheMagnificent although he looked like a future star last season.  Whatever the case Detroit and Halifax had a tough road ahead.

Comment 3:

You could say that the turning point for both teams would be after the first period.  Throughout the second period both teams put up 2 goals.  They fired up after getting the rust off their skates.   A larger and more noticeable turning point would be the Detroit Falcons scoring 3 goals to 1 in the first part of the third period closely followed by the Halifax Raiders scoring 2 goals of their own making the score 6 to 5 in favor of Halifax. The Raiders were able to seal the game with flex tape and win the game, because us Detroit fans can agree that that was a lot of damage.

SPECIAL TEAMS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Penalties are definitely going to cost you when it comes to these close games and that was the case for the Montreal Militia. The Militia had a 100% success rate in not only the Power Play but also the Penalty Kill. Both of their Power Play goals were tying goals for them, notching it up at 2-2 with 1:40 left in the second period and then tying it 5-5 with 12 minutes to go in the 3rd period, eventually taking the lead and putting the game to rest.
The biggest change of this game was for sure the fact that the Militia were able to take 4 minor penalties and not give up a goal on any of them. Killing off 4 penalties in a game this close, and the fact that they were always trying to play catch up, put the win in the bag for them.

A FIRST FOR MANY
Being the opening game for both the Falcons and the Militia, this was a great game for players to start the season with. 9 players in the whole game registered a multi point game, and another 9 players registered a point. It was also the first SMJHL game for many players but unfortunately, not a single rookie registered a point in this game. Bitties, Cleary, Sarantez, Paclicka Jr, Zigzagooney, and Tadisko all made their way onto the scoresheet for a milestone game in their Simulation Hockey League career but they all hoped for a better outting. Satoshi Zigzagooney would be my rookie of the game winner after registering a plus1 rating, 2 shots and also a blocked shot while only playing 12:28.

Comment One – Special Teams

Special teams can decide games. In this game, you can definitely make the claim that special teams played a huge part in the final outcome. Montreal was dynamite with the man advantage. They capitalized twice on the powerplay with goals by both Commander Shepard in the first period and Marc Hagan in the third period. The second powerplay goal was huge as it tied the game at 5-5 with over ten minutes left to play. Not only did they score on both powerplays but they were also four for four on the penalty kill. Special teams were huge in this game.

Comment Two - Stars of the Game
Two players, one on each end, were extremely impressive in this game. For the Detroit Falcons, Espen Knutsen Jr. really wanted to come into this game and show off that he's a player to watch this game. He ended this game with two goals and one assist for three points in the loss. He was easily the best Falcon on the ice and with a little more help from his teammates, he could've taken this one on his own. Marc Hagan was equally as impressive for the Militia. With one goal and three assists, Marc was the second star in this game. His huge third period goal tied this game at five while he also set up the game winner.

Comment Three - Defensive Play
Sometimes when you see a big score, you often have to wonder how it got this high. With a six to five final in this game, it is easy to blame the goaltenders. Neither O'Koivu-Volkova nor Hasek were impressive in this game with save percentages hovering around .800% for each goaltender. But from up here, I would put more onus on the defensive play of each team. Neither team looked particularly interested in playing the defensive side of the ice, rather sacrificing defence for offence. This could be seen in the low block shots for either team, with a combined 13 blocks. If these teams want to become elite SMJHL teams, they need to show more in their own zones.

What a barn burner. It's funny doing these after the fact, as this game was so close and back and forth but now looking back, Montreal went on to be one of the top teams in the league and Detroit went the opposite direction. As a goalie, I usually like to see low scoring games, so my heart goes out to both netminders in this one. The real difference maker in this one was special teams. Montreal was perfect on both sides of the coin, going two for two on the powerplay and four for four on the penalty kill. The good teams just find ways to beat you, and Montreal found it's way by scoring on the powerplay and killing off all penalties.

First Period:

The first period was a bit of a challenge for the Militia. The Falcons started out really strong defensively keeping the Militia from scoring the first goal of the game at 15:09. The Militia also played a a really good defensive first period, letting no goals past. There were three penalties called during the first. All three being called on the Militia. Two of them were for Hooking by the same player and the other for Tripping. Luckily no major penalties. In all the first period was a great defensive watch. There were a lot of good body hits that shook the glass and rattled the fans.   (108)

Second Period:

The second period was started off with the Falcons jumping ahead two to one. They were able to hold this lead for the majority of the period. That was until the Militia came in with two more goals in the last few minutes. The last goal being made with less than half a minute to go. There were three penalties again this period. Only one was on the Militia. This time for Holding. The Militia seem to get more fired up when they have to fight for a comeback. Compared to starting off with just a straight lead. It is becoming apparent that they like to give their fans a show.   (111)

Third Period:

The Falcons came into the third with a fire lit. Scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the period to take the lead. A goal by Shepard of the Militia tied the game, but only for a couple of minutes. The Falcons took the lead one last time with a quick goal at 7:14. Just over a minute later another goal the Militia tied it up for the last time. Fans were on the edge of their seats. But it was Johnson of the Militia that scored the game winning goal of the night. Definitely a hard fought win.   (102)

Only 5th game of the season offers a matchup between two of the most decorated teams in history of SMJHL. Bouth teams have played so many times with each other that there is nothing to hide. Rivalry during a season, even more fierce rivals in play offs. Between these two teams so many SHL greats in the past and so much more to come. Maybe someone of these guys today on ice will be first pick in draft. Next Esa Anrikkanen or Jasper Klayton. Who ever wins the game will be having a huge boost for whole season. Could call this game “El Classico” of SMJHL

MVP:
Jaguar Johnson from the Montreal Militia was the best player in the game. He scored two goals during the night but those two goals were very important for team. The first one was before the second intermission, he was able give a one goal lead for Montreal. They were down 2-1, one minute before the end of the period. They scored two goals and took the lead. Entering the third period, they had the momentum thanks to Jaguar Johnson. They lost their lead when the third period has started. Espen Knutsen Jr. scored 2 goals in the first three minutes of the third period. The Militia were able to capitalize and it was tie between the two teams halfway through the last period. Montreal needed Jaguar Johnson once again, he stole the puck from Kalvins Zvejnieks and shot the puck and went through the goalie, winning the game for his team.

Team stats breakdown and analysis:
Both teams played very well. They had similar stats on the offensive side. The falcons had one more shots on goal than the Militia. They had three more hits than their opponent and four more faceoffs wins. It was a very close game between these two but there is one important stats that gave the win to Montreal. They were the better team on the powerplay. The Falcons were on the powerplay four times and they couldn't score one goal. The Montreal's defense struggled on 5v5 but they were able to shutdown the Falcons offense with only four players. The Falcons defense was bad in that game but they weren't better on the penalty. Montreal was successful on the powerplay as they scored two goals on two attempts. This was the most important factor from their win.
