The Halifax Raiders had a golden opportunity this draft. With the third overall pick and two picks in the second round, the Raiders had a chance to steer the ship in the right direction and solidify a foundation capable of contending for a Four Star Cup. After taking RW Cody at third overall, the team snagged Wyatt Ruschkoff and Ricky Spanish to close out round two.
Although Halifax is considered to have drafted well in the first two rounds, management is currently being celebrated for incredible pickups in the later rounds of the S48 SMJHL Draft. Let's take a look at these rookies to see who will be suiting up in Raiders black in the coming weeks. 24TH OVERALL PICK: JON SNOW Speedy Offensive Winger Nationality: Canada 6'2, 220 lbs @ckenny45 Jon Snow is a right handed, all-around offensive forward. At 6'2 and 220 lbs, Snow will have the toughness to withstand the physicality of the J without sacrificing speed and agility. Scouts are most impressed with Snow's skating; the young prospect impressed with his ability to both maneuver around the ice and keep the puck on his stick. Snow is a balanced forward who keeps opponents guessing whether he will snap a quick writer or dish it off to his teammates. Snow, a late addition to this draft class, has been active and invested in his development. Expect Snow to continue skating circles around his opponents while finding his role on a fresh Halifax roster. Nickname: Crow 42ND OVERALL PICK: JIMMY VAN JOHNS Shutdown Defenseman Nationality: United Kingdom 6'3, 225 lbs @TheGrza Jimmy Van Johns, a member of the S48 Draft Class' All-Name team, is a stocky defenseman out of the British Isles. Internationally, he has already caught the eyes of scouts with his ability to fill a number of roles on the squad. Although some scouts have described him as an Offensive Defenseman, JVJ isn't afraid to lay the body on forwards entering the zone. Most impressively for a junior, Van Johns' plays a physical game without leading a parade to the penalty box. Jimmy Van Johns' has built a solid foundation to grow his game upon, and has a bright future to look forward to in Halifax. Nickname: Vito 43RD OVERALL PICK: ELIJAH RICHARDSON Zippy Forward Nationality: USA 5'10", 185 lbs @ElijahR92 Elijah Richardson is a unique talent. Although some would way Richardson is undersized, he makes up for it with heart, and it shows in his scrappiness. Richardson is one of the quickest skaters in this year's draft, and he isn't afraid to drop the gloves in support of his teammates. In the offensive zone, Richardson displays excellent puck skills and isn't afraid to get to the dirty areas. Nickname: The Rat [Word Count: 487 Doubles media?]
