WFT's: Make the Case (S48)

The Hamilton Steelhawks who are currently leading the Eastern conference are a bigger surprise then the Winnipeg Jets who are currently leading the Western conference.
Against.. The Steelhawks had a great team last season and either ran into some bad sim luck or were just coached wrong for the situations they were in. I strongly believe that the jets are the bigger surprise after moving out some big named pieces in recent history. This is probably Hamilton's last kick before they become a bottom team with so many players retiring, it's not surprising to see them push this season.

Minnesota's surprising 13-9 start is backed by the strongest *top line* in the SHL in Eric Pelletier, Bobby Watson and Terrance Nova.

That affirmation is kind of true, Minnesota's is backed by their top line but but nevertheless, it's a team effort and they are backed by a really good goalie.

In this skilled rookie class, Chicago forward Kit Smeb will win the rookie of the year award

AGAINST

SixNine will be able to pull back his point production in the last half of the season and run away with the awwrd. On top of his points. His top hitting ability and shot blocks will surely sway voters.

Mixed.

Their start is certainly backed by their top line, and their top line is performing like one of the best top lines in the league, but calling it the best is a stretch I can't quite make. I feel like they are over performing and will likely even out a bit by the end of the season. Though I may eat my words, with over performers down in TBB too, this might be the season of the underdogs.

For. Ever since Michael Fischer left the class and went inactive this draft class has been the most dominant. With players like Demaricus Smyth, Brady McIntyre, Bob Bergen, and Mikhail Lokitonov in the ranks there is a lot of talent.

Who?

highly skilled rookie 'Cody', playing in a league of capped forwards, will capture the SMJHL S48 goal-scoring title.

Against. While impressive, the rest of the non-capped players are gaining TPE making his path that much harder. At the time of writing this, he's 2 goals behind the leaders before we hit the mid-season mark. The next update will make it that much harder on scoring across the SMJHL and I expect him to slow down much more than the capped forwards. Nonetheless it's an impressive season for the young player and he will most definitely be in contention for Rookie of the Year at this rate.

Following in Kelowna and St. Louis footsteps of repeating as champions, the Anaheim Outlaws, currently at the top of the SMJHL standings will win the Four Star Cup for the second season in a row.

Against.

Outlaw win was a fluke and MTL was robbed last season. If one were to pick a favorite for this seasons Four Star Cup (..and it'd be stupid to do so, seeing how close the top is) I'd choose Vancouver; but I might as well say STL, DET or MTL. All of them have at least the same shot at winning the cup as ANA does, so trying to claim that they'll repeat it as something to be expected is to stand on thing ice.. like non-existent ice.

Against: Once we get past the fact that Kit Smeb is not actually a rookie(Since he played 50 games in S47 for CHI), to say that anyone is a lock for the ROTY award is a stretch. There are so many talented rookies that joined the SHL this season that I feel for the Awards committee who will have to even narrow it down to 3 by the end of the season. So far rookie scoring has also not had a clear leader as most of the top 10 are within a few points of each other.

Code:
After a change in management, the Lethbridge Lions will finish in the top 5 of the SMJHL standings.

Against: While I think Lethbridge is now on an upward trend I think they will finish just short of the top 5 in SMJHL Standings. While league parity has been at an all time high, I see the top 5 shaking out as Anaheim, Vancouver, Montreal, St. Louis, and Detroit.

For: Obviously I have a slight bias but after roughly half the season played out Anaheim is looking much better than most anticipated after losing over 1 full line of capped players. With scoring spread out among a young team with a strong veteran core, I believe Anaheim will get the repeat. Simon T seems to have taken a liking to the franchise and their phenomenal special teams play coupled with strong goal-tending might be the answer they need.

BS

Montreal didn't win because they weren't good enough. In the final 3 games Anaheim didn't get more than 20 shots on net and Montreal still couldn't put it away, be salty as long as you want but it was Montreal's to take and they couldn't get it done. Anaheim's goal tending was on point and they were more dangerous in the limited chances they had. We're now half way through S48 and go figure the better team is on top of the standings.

Against, but only barely!
I think Lethbridge will be greatly improved with solid management but I don't see them pushing into top 5. There are some significant teams ahead that all occupy those top 5 spots and Lethbridge is going to have to make some roster improvements before they get there. But I hope they do so we can get a sweet Expansion team rivalry going!

For.

While they are certainly a team with a lot of talent, Hamilton being in the top position is much more surprising than Winnipeg who has had many successful seasons and a strong and talented core. I don't think that Hamilton being at the top is too huge a surprise, but the Jets are expected year in and out to be one of the better teams in the league

Obviously this can't be true because San Francisco has the strongest top line in the SHL like I've seen those homies in the gym and they are extremely muscular and strong so this is a clear lie for shame

FOR

Call it a subjective feeling more than anything else, but for me the Steelhawks have been a really up and down team over the last decade or two, who were never really terrible but somehow lacked structure and a clear focus. The Jets on the other hand were able to build reliable cores and compete with them on a regular basis, so seeing them at the top is less surprising to me than seeing the Steelhawks there.

AGAINST.

While I don't think it's impossible, the SMJHL scoring is usually highly random and fluctuates quite a bit within a single season. As the season is going, it surely is a possibility, however with the players in the league getting better at the same rate, he may struggle the second half of the season. Right now the competition for the goal scoring title is very close and it's anybody's guess who will capture it. However, if I had to say whether it's Cody or anybody else, I'm taking the field.

The Best juniors prospect in the world is named Julio Tokolosh of Colorado.

AGAINST. Is this a serious debate? This statement could not be more false. Monkey D. Luffy is one of the brightest prospects in the SMJHL history. He is the Buffalo Stampedes' stashed lamborghini, a future world beater who is biding his time by perfecting his skating and technical skills before joining the big stage. I think Monkey D. Luffy is the only answer for the best juniors prospect in the world.
