S49 SMJHL Draft Prospects
Ready for grading

Although we do not have a location, date, or time for the upcoming SMJHL Draft, we do have prospects! Oh boy do we have prospects. Each one looking to claim their spot in the SMJHL and prove that they belong enroute to a Four Star Cup and hopefully the SHL in tow. Here we take a brief look at each prospect and what they could bring to the table for a SMJHL Franchise. We even get a little bold for a few of them and predict where they might be taken in the Draft, if at all!

Stay tuned throughout the week as we will continue to add prospects to our list as they’ve declared for the SMJHL. Have something for our editor or a picture to add for a prospect? Send us a message and we’ll be sure to feature it!

Player: Disisde Dayudie @スウェグキング
Position: Defense
Height: 6’3
Weight: 209lbs
Nationality: Japan

Dayudie comes to us from the Sunrise land of Japan where his 6’3 and 209 frame is well beyond the nations average. A very good defender with a knack for finding the back of the net from the point, Dayudie would be a solid addition to any SMJHL looking. As of right now, expect him to command 1st round attention

Player: Landon Flynn @"Simply Incorrect"
Position:  Left Wing
Height: 6’1
Weight: 190lbs
Nationality: United States
A decently quick left winger, Flynn thrives on goals and being a goal scorer. With a great shot and feel for the offensive open ice Flynn is a goal scorer that many SMJHL teams are looking to add to their roster. His one weakness is his passing, or at least his willingness to pass the puck as he doesn’t do it much. Another talent that could be going in the 1st round when everything is said and done.

Player: Bobby Lane @Rich
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’11
Weight: 183lbs
Nationality: United States

Good two-way play is the name of the game for Bobby Lane. A capable defender that can run most systems and an offensive threat inside the O-zone Lane has drawn some interesting comparables that could see him going in the 1st round. Fairly smooth skater as well but his strength along the walls and in some corners could use some immediate work.

Player: Manboobs Harden @Manboobs_Harden
Position: Defense
Height: 6’5
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: United States

For his frame you would expect Harden to command some serious attention, coupled with the fact that he’s an offensive defenseman. His scoring ability is noted and he can manage a puck in traffic. Although for being so big his strength and battle win percentage is not great. We’ve heard some reports that he’s not 100% motivated to join the SMJHL despite declaring so it’s really a crapshoot on when and if he gets selected this upcoming draft.

Player: Scott King @King5
Position: Defense
Height: 6’4
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Canada
King declared for the draft very early this year and some eyebrows were raised at his potential. Despite a good initial projection, it seems he’s slide down some draft boards. A strong showing at the prospect showcase could easily bump him back up some teams’ draft boards so keep an eye out for him. An average all around player nothing really stands out, but there isn’t too many mistakes in his game either.

Player: Shiqa Vitalievich @NylarthePhoenix
Position: Goalie
Height: 6’4
Weight: 210lbs
Nationality: Russia

Trained from birth to be a goaltender, Vitalievich is an interesting prospect indeed. Another early person to declare it seems he wants to leave Russia and play in the SMJHL as early as possible. Skating wise he’s nothing special but his ability comes from strong reflexes and hand speed, true to Russian form. Goaltenders are always hard to predict but I imagine he’ll find a good SMJHL home and be one of the top goaltenders in this years class.

Player: Gylfi Eriksson @pazuzu15
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’2
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: Sweden

Although he’s a SMJHL prospect, Eriksson is already playing for Team Sweden in the WJC currently. A strong passer with a good frame from the left wing, Eriksson will command a look when it comes time this SMJHL Draft. Keep an eye on him during the WJC as I expect scouts are as well.

Player: Blake Gaudette @Gaudette
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’7
Weight: 325lbs
Nationality: Canada

An absolute behemoth on the right wing, Gaudette was raised on Maple Syrup and Molson. He also posses a mean streak like the SMJHL has ever seen as he’s an old-time hockey player for sure. He can’t do much with a stick, other than swing it, but his fists have been molded from gold in order to whail on the opposition. He’s not defensive slouch either, but mainly because other players are scared to pass him or get into board battles. One of the most intriguing players the league could get this Draft.

Player: Doug Glatt @Guriinwoodo
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’4
Weight: 235lbs
Nationality: United States

Will the real Glatt please stand up? Doug Glatt enters a draft where it seems like there have been others before him that could have been carbon copies. Maybe this is the real one however seeing as the only good thing about his game is he’s a hell of a fighter.

Player: Ozzy Snozzborn @Jbeezy76
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’3
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: United States

An all-around player, Snozzborn has worked on every aspect of his game. His flexible build could really be useful to the right coach or GM as they can help mold him into a player that fits their junior team. However, that is also a negative as a player with no identity can be quickly forgotten about or looked over.

Player: Mitchell Maverick @Legend
Position: Goalie
Height: 6’4
Weight: 204lbs
Nationality: United States

Bakersfield own, Maverick declared for the draft early and it was met with tons of scepticism and criticism. Coming from a lowly U16 team where his stats were not great not a lot of people expect Maverick to be taken this upcoming draft, but he’ll be eager to prove them wrong at the prospect showcase (If he gets invited).

Player: Kalevolaripaavo Käspertommevisnapuu @AlwaysGettingHaxed
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’4
Weight: 210lbs
Nationality: Estonia

Mr. Copy and Paste himself hails from Estonia and has made waves within the SMJHL about his declaration for the draft. A self-described sniper that doesn’t snipe but rather plays defense, you wonder if he got his play style confused with his mandatory military service. Regardless, the scouts seem to like him although the equipment staff will hate him. You try fitting Käspertommevisnapuu on a jersey.

Player: Niklas Fuhrberg @Confusion
Position: LW/RW
Height: 6’4
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: South Africa

I guess South Africa has more ice rinks then we think as a solid prospect has emerged. Fuhrberg is a well-rounded scorer and passer that has some decent strength to his game as well. With a frame for a power forward I can only imagine where Fuhrberg will be once he develops more and adds an X-Factor to his game. SMJHL teams would be smart taking a chance on him as he may be one of the top players in a few seasons.

Player: Ryan Leaf Jr. @ValorX77
Position: Defense
Height: 6’
Weight: 250lbs
Nationality: United States
Sharing an unfortunate name, Leaf Jr. is trying his hand at the SMJHL and he’s built like a tank. A thick player with the strength of a gorilla, Leaf Jr looks good getting off the bus but if the puck isn’t along the wall or in the corner there isn’t much he can do with it. I applaud this young man for taking a shot however I don’t see a bright future until he improves.

Player: George Costanza @fonziGG
Position: Center
Height: 6’11
Weight: 280lbs
Nationality: Uganda

Can we get a name check here, or an ID check? On second thought I don’t remember Costanza being so tall, but that weight checks out. Poor boy, his parents have been playing a joke on him his entire life. I don’t see this George making his way to North America anytime soon.

Player: Zbigniew Pokrywka @thebigschnoz
Position: Defense
Height: 6’3
Weight: 205lbs
Nationality: Poland

A long awaited prospect, Pokrywka is finally declaring for the SMJHL draft. A great two-way defender and checking ability Pokrywka can slide right onto any of the SMJHL teams blueline and other GM’s know it. I expect him to go high as everyone is waiting to see how he will pan out with his good frame work.

Player: Jay Reeves @jays_cloud
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’6
Weight: 180lbs
Nationality: Unknown

A mysterious prospect, and also one of the smallest in this year’s class, Reeves is a prototypical sniper. Great release and shot power with the ability to chase down pucks on the backcheck make him a desirable prospect to say the least. His skating ability isn’t bad either. One of the more unknown guys at this draft I’m hoping he finds a home and is given a chance to shine. He could be a very good addition for any SMJHL team.

Player: Jakob Hamr @TomHanks
Position: Defense
Height: 6’5
Weight: 250lbs
Nationality: Czech Republic

Jakob Hamr, the big Czech! A huge frame is always in demand for defensive defenceman and Hamr has some in spades. A great defender and decent first pass guy I think scouts have taken notice with him. All he needs to do know is continue to be a presence (which won’t be hard with that frame) and we’ll see a team grab him in the early rounds. Hamr is another prospect with a good frame that a GM and coach love to see. With proper coaching we could be seeing the next great shutdown defender at the Junior level.

Player: Jiddy Jimbo @ScorpXCracker
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Germany

Jiddy Jimbo must mean something in German, right? If not, we have another case of cruel parents. You know what isn’t cruel though? Jimbo’s ability to pass that puck. We’ve seen from his scouting tape that he can fit that thing almost anywhere. Being a right-handed shot on the RW he’ll be a threat to stop with his passing ability. Other than that, though his game is severely lacking in most other areas. I wonder if a SMJHL team takes a chance on him.

Player: Justin Womack @AbstractArtist3781
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 240lbs
Nationality: United States

A two way forward with a solid check, Womack makes his living being physical and fighting his way towards the front of the net or open ice. Not the best defender or skater Womack is pure willpower which is a very good sign of the character underneath the helmet. SMJHL scouts have been impressed by him so far and I expect that will only help push him up the draft board. Womack could be a letter wearing player in no time in the SMJHL.

Player: Luca Veccelli @Symmetrik
Position: Center
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 208lbs
Nationality: Switzerland

One of the more dynamic centers in the draft thus far, Veccelli has the tools to be successful in the SMJHL. With a strong ability to win draws, be in the right position not only defensively but offensively as well Veccelli is looking to be a franchise player for the lucky Junior team that drafts him. We’re very excited to see him play in the SMJHL next season and I’m sure his future line mates are as well with his passing ability.

Player: Yamamoto Mitsuharu @TML99
Position: RW/LW
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: Japan

Another tall Japanese player in this year’s draft. What is in Japan’s water, other than nuclear waste? Oh wait, we figured it out, nevermind. Another 1st round quality player Mitsuharu takes pride in his defensive work and positioning. An avid Penalty Killer with good hands could be a recipe for success for the SMJHL team that takes him. Just make sure he has his own water bottle, unless you want your team turning in the “Mon-Stars.”

Player: Vorian Atreides @Green
Position: Center
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 239lbs
Nationality: United Kingdom

Aye Gov’na! Atreides is the latest in the young list of prospects from the across the pond to join the SMJHL and play their Junior hockey in North America. Another good mouldable frame that is decent at most things Atreides will command a ton of management eyes at the upcoming prospect showcase. It seems people are buzzed about him and there is a certain feeling that he’s done this before and every day will be a walk in the park. A calming influence in any locker room for sure.

Player: Akira Ren @Velevra
Position: Defense
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: Japan

6’4”? Must be from Japan. Another great defender that has been instructed in the ways of distributing puck carriers from the puck, Ren makes this prospect blueline even more crowded – and for good reason. Great frame, and a great foundation to build upon I’m sure GM’s are going to start looking to Japan even more after this class.

Player: Hoagie Butler @Tokenwilliam
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 235lbs
Nationality: United States

Starting off the list of the fresh newcomers that announced this week, Hoagie Butler is a towering Power Forward hoping to make the jump to the SMJHL. A good puck handler for such a large guy, Butler is sure to be a force on the forecheck. Strong is the name of his game as he prefers to push through opponents rather than go around.

Player: Owen Zerfas @I_am_Owen
Position: Left Wing
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 188lbs
Nationality: United States
Another Power Forward that is chomping at the bit about joining the SMJHL. Early indications are very positive Zerfas but a lot is yet to be really known. He’s no stranger to the fisticuffs and can hold his own in a fight. He tries to do a little bit of everything on the ice but it will be up to the SMJHL team that takes him to groom his game.

Player: Sasha Dangelchek @acdangel
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: Czech Republic

The trend of big bodied wingers continues with Dangelchek, one of the most Hockey names we’ve ever come across. From the Czech Republic this young player is hoping North America is the next stop in his young journey and boy does he have the tools to do it. A great passer that can handle the puck and throw his body around? Sign me up. The SMJHL GM’s will be watching him closely but the first impressions are very good!

Player: Lucky O'Hoolihan @Archer8
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 205lbs
Nationality: Ireland

The Luck of the Irish be with this prospect, literally. Lucky O'Hoolihan is an explosive skating and top shelf scoring prospect from you guess it, Ireland. A great frame and another prospect with the right framework it will be interesting to see how O'Hoolihan does in the upcoming Prospect Showcase. My money is on a very good showing.

Player: Face of The Franchise @Frankcarp21
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: United States
Face of the Franchise cannot be a real name? This has to be a moniker or a mistake, right? Well, who knows honestly? But we do know that this kid can play and has a heck of a first pass off the wall in the defensive zone. Not only that, but he consistently takes care of his role in the D-Zone that’s its unheard of for such a young prospect. Hopefully he becomes a “Face of the Frnachise” because that has to be one of his life goals, right?

Player: Adam Foley @Adam_TacoCat
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 189lbs
Nationality: Germany
Adam Foley might be Mrs. Foley’s Baby “Junge” (Boy in German), but he might also be a boy in this draft class that is looking to show that looks can be deceiving. A modest frame, this German prospect can pack a punch with his body checking and strength on the ice. He’s not someone that will score the highlight goal, but he’ll try to muscle his way around until the puck goes into the back of the net.

Player: Viel Veelio @Veelio73
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 237lbs
Nationality: Canada
Viel Veelio may not sound like a Canadian Lumberjack, but trust us he is. He can bench press with the best of them but he’s physically gifted to trek across the wilderness if he has to. An absolute physical beast with a mind for defensive hockey, this right winger adds to an impressive Power Forward draft class thus far.

Player: Angle Vladimir @Notagiant
Position:  Goalie
Height: 6’
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Canada
A perfect and even 6’ and 200lbs, Vladimir, the Russian who is actually Canadian joins this year’s draft class of Goaltenders. A quick and nimble goaltender with the reaction time of… well... cat. It may sound cliché, but it’s true as he’s a master of the off-ice ball drills that this young generation of goalies have been brought up with.

Player: Rob Blake @jakeepoo
Position: Goalie
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: Canada

Have we ever seen a Goaltender more shredded than Rob Blake? At 6’3” and 220lbs he knows how to fill out a crease, and a suit. Just take a look at the picture above. For such a big body Blake’s agility and reaction time are out of this world. It’s almost inhuman how fast he is. With such scary athleticism Rob Blake may be the top goaltender in this years class.

Player: Adam Barron @charlieconway
Position: Defense
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 187lbs
Nationality: Canada

Adam Barron is the description of durability and endurance he also redefines what it means to be a 1st pairing defenceman in the SMJHL. With a great natural defensive ability, he can make a stretch pass anywhere on the ice and always on the tape. He’s a D man you should keep your eyes on in this great class already. Expect big things from him

Player: Miska Humala @Piparipoju
Position: Right Wing
Height:6’1”
Weight:200lbs
Nationality:Finland

One of the few Finnish prospect in this year’s draft, Miska Humala can skate for days. I imagine it comes from his youth and skating across many of the huge frozen lakes that Finland has to offer. Whatever it was though worked as he’s poised to make the jump to the SMJHL. A good skating winger is always in demand.

Player: Wojtek Kurwa @jfurt16
Position:Left Wing
Height:6’3”
Weight: 225lbs
Nationality: United States

This year’s draft may be one of the biggest and toughest in years and Wojtek Kurwa fits right in. He’s unusually good at faceoffs for being a winger and very disciplined. He’s defensive game is always a focal point that scouts have been drawn too. I’m not surprised he’s declared for the draft but he still has work ahead of him if he wants to make the SMJHL.

Player: Patrick Miller @BayJingT
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality:  United States

Patrick Miller is yet another defensive stud that can pass the puck, however I think he is the best. He’s easily better than most defenceman in this class, which is scary good. The fact that he’s playing the wing makes him a very safe pick and a valuable penalty killer. He’s also one of, if not the best pure passers we’ve seen in a long time. If he keeps this up I can see him climbing after a strong showing at the prospect showcase.

Player: Peter Klaven @dirtydinger
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 184lbs
Nationality: Canada

Easily on the smaller end of the scale for this class, Peter Klaven makes up for it with a solid stride and a good overall offensive game. He can pass, shoot, and handle it in tight situations. It will be interesting to see how GMs value size this year with so much of it so perhaps Klaven gets another look since he’s one of the few undersized players?

Player: Aron Hernadivic @jfisherr
Position: Left Wing
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 180lbs
Nationality: Czech Republic

Not A-Aron here, just plain old Aron from the hockey hotbed of Czech Republic. Hernadivic is a playmaker from the wing (sound familiar yet?) With a great pass, good acceleration and balance while skating, and also the ability to keep the puck on a string Hernadivic adds another element to an all too familiar player type.

Player: Samuel Michaud @golden_apricot
Position: Defense
Height: 5’10”
Weight:205lbs
Nationality: United States

A defenceman that might be on the smaller side, don’t let that fool you since he can skate like the wind and backcheck like the dickens. A very strong defender that keeps his body in position with his overall ability to be anywhere and everywhere on the ice. Most of his other skills need time to develop but he can be an immediate help for a team looking to shore up their blueline this off-season. With proper training from a coaching staff I can see Michaud being one of the biggest sleepers in this years draft, although he may be drafted high enough where he won’t be considered a sleeper.

Player: Richard Hurtz @dicfor
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 190lbs
Nationality: United States

Hurtz can pass, he can shoot, and he can certainly backcheck. A coaches dream right? More than likely yes and for that reason you can expect him to demand quite the scouting entourage for whenever he hits the ice leading up to the SMJHL Draft. Sure, he could be physical, but he knows he’s a solid Top 6 player and he’ll probably start playing those minutes right away upon being drafted. Another sleeper to keep your eye on for sure.

Player: Nicholas Corona @CheMxDawG
Position: Defense
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 230lbs
Nationality: United States

Pass first is the name of the game from the big U.S defender Nicholas Corona. A strong ability to move a puck is key on any team so right away Corona provides tremendous value to any team that would take a chance on him. He does however also have a cannon of a shot from the point and the ability to blow it by opposing goaltenders. Any of course, he can play defense which is a must for any defender in the SMJHL

Player: Georgy Gorbachenko @The BreakBot
Position: Defense
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 220lbs
Nationality: Russia

The big Russian, Georgy Gorbachenko is not only a big mouthful but a big presence on the ice as well. He’s probably the best pure defender in the draft and it shows as he’s part goaltender with the amount of rubber that he blocks. Any goaltender would be lucky to have him in front of them this upcoming season. Outside of that his overall game does need work, but hey, that is what the SMJHL is for right?

Player: James Hendricks @Clayroo
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 212lbs
Nationality: Canada

Boy can Hendricks fly. With a smooth stride and a flick of the foot he’s in front of you one second and around you the next. Being a great skater provides great value for every team because it means you can hold your own in any situation on the ice. Hendricks offensive ability is nothing to sneeze at either as he can put up points like no other. We’ll wait for him to show us a bit more before projecting his draft ranking however.

Player: Samuel Morris @koolforever
Position:  Left Wing
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 198lbs
Nationality: Canada

Samuel Morris may sound like he was a character from the American Civil War, but he’s in fact a young Canadian Left Winger. A strong pass with good accuracy is his trademark along with being an efficient skater going up and down that left side of the ice. He isn’t no slouch on the board either, as he consistently wins them right now. Who knows if that will translate to the bigger, faster, quicker game of the SMJHL however? We’re betting this American War Hero turned Canadian hockey player will fit in just fine though.

Player: Mister Clean @Cleanerhubby
Position: Center
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: Canada

The center position is weak thus far looking at this draft class, but at least Mister Clean might have some endorsement deals if his plans don’t pan out. A decent passer and puck handler may have got him onto some draft boards but we can tell you for a fact it was that bald head and full white gear that got him noticed in the first place. Brilliant idea if you ask me.

Player: Marcus Weiser @omenolson
Position: Center
Height: 6’0
Weight: 180lbs
Nationality: Austria

Marcus Weiser hails from Austria, and it shows in his in game. Although slightly above average height, Weiser demands a physical presence on the ice with his strength and body checking ability. Knowing that he’s Austrian I would be scared to see him in the weight room as you know he’s coming from some sort of Schwarzenegger boot camp. His strength naturally translates to the faceoff dot but he also has an unexpected knack for scoring, making him a dangerous Power Forward. I expect Weiser to continue to impress, and also scare, us as the draft approaches. A SMJHL team would be smart to grab him early.

Player: Franklin Aklus @Frankaklus
Position: Defense
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 190lbs
Nationality: United States

Aklus is a Two-Way Defenceman from the United States looking to make his mark on the SMJHL. A great defender and natural passer, Aklus has a great foundation to work from. Add in his skating ability and I can see why he’s jumped up some draft boards for sure. I’d be very curious to see how he does come the prospect showcase and if he can improve his draft stock there.

Player: Ihaf Scehtez @IhafScehtez
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 165lbs
Nationality: Japan

Wait, we have a Japanese player in this draft that isn’t a giant? Maybe the world is right after all. Although Ihaf Scehtez could probably blow away with the wind given his 165lbs frame, his skating allows him to blow past players on the ice. The one thing that isn’t surprising is that he’s a very good defender as it’s something that Japanese players seemingly learn at a young age. His saucer pass is something to marvel though, as it’s almost art at this point. Another player I’d be curious to watch at the prospect showcase. We’ll see if he continues to climb up draft boards or if he’s blown away by the competition (due to the wind).

Player: Monty Montgomery @CapMonty
Position: Goalie
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 205lbs
Nationality: United States

We have another cat in this year’s draft it seems, which is a weird coincidence. Montgomery although not quick as the very best in this draft is certainly in the top half for the Goalies. Great hand speed and very agile are the two biggest things when you watch his game film. He’s also probably the most flexible goalie in the draft as well. With only a limited amount of spots in the SMJHL, does Montgomery have watch it takes to take one? We’ll find out.

Player: Jamal Anderson @gbarrett33
Position: Goalie
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Canada

Another agile Goaltender, Anderson excels at most things a goaltender should. He’s calm, cool, and collected when it comes to big moments, breakaways, and penalty shots. He also can control a rebound very nicely but his biggest flaw is his skating. Don’t worry, goalies don’t skate anyways right?

Player: Colton Strudwick @SeeJay
Position: Center
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: Canada

Strong in the dot is one of the best things a centerman can be, and Colton Strudwick is sure off to a great start. The Canadian is also a strong passer and decent puck handler but seems cursed it when it comes to tapping it back door looks. Nevertheless, the reports from our sources are good on Strudwick and he will command some interest from the SMJHL GMs this Draft.

Player: Ian Venables @toirekari
Position: Goalie
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 222lbs
Nationality: Canada

Another sizeable goalie in this year’s draft, Venables continues the trend that being fast and speedy may be better than staying in control. With a seriously impressive reaction time and hand speed, this Hybrid goalie from Canada is standing out for all the right reasons. Add in a good ability to pay the puck and Venables becomes one of the top goaltenders in this class for sure. Did we mention he’s a fairly strong skater as well? Because if we didn’t than we wouldn’t be doing him justice. Keep an eye on him for sure.

Player: Grey Butkus @bobwarth
Position: Defense
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: United States

Butkus walks the blueline with the puck like it’s something he was born to do, and frankly it probably was. A very impressive stride and puck handling ability for a defenceman Butkus stands out for the right reasons. However, he doesn’t play much D, which could be a problem seeing that he’s a defenseman. We’ll be curious to see how he does on the ice with the other prospects at the prospect showcase.

Player: Dick Trickle @tyty0201
Position: Defense
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: United States

I seriously doubt Dick Trickle got much love growing up, either from his parents or from the opposite sex due to the fact none of the girls were interested in bringing Dick Trickle back to meet their parents. Anywho, he’s a good defender on the ice and can move the puck as well which is what SMJHL teams are looking for. Just don’t expect anyone to be chanting his name in the arenas ever. I wonder what his teammates call him for a nickname?

Player: Jaxon Chase @Jchase
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Canada

Mr. Jaxon Chase is quite the scorer for a self-described playmaker. With great handles and a wicked release, one has to wonder if Chase is wanting people to think he’s a playmaker, or if he just wants to convince himself of that. Either way Jaxon Chase can pass, but mainly decides to light the lamp instead. Not a bad trait for the SMJHL prospect.

Player: Rath McLeod @rathmourn
Position: Defense
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: United States

McLeod is a great two-way defenceman, with the ability to always be in smart positioning for either a break up of the opposing offensive play or for a great outlet pass out of his own zone. He’s not afraid to make a move around forecheckers as well since his handles give him another option in finding the perfect passing lane. SMJHL GM’s have taken notice and I expect they’ll continue to watch him close leading up to the draft.

Player: Suzuki Namokato @Thejaff
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 202lbs
Nationality: Japan

Where are all these Japanese players coming from, and more importantly where have they been? Namokato adds to a very solid prospect class for Japan and for very good reason. He not only comes from the land with the giant red dot on it, but he’s always making opposing teams see a different type of red – which would the goal light as he always finds a way to light the lamp. A strong skater and the endurance of an Ox I can see a big rivalry brewing between these Japanese players and I love it.

Player: Kevin Robinson @leftwing42
Position: Center
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Two-Way Forward

Kevin Robinson is a future jack of all trade’s player, but master of none. He’s decently solid across the board when it comes to the SMJHL scouting reports and I suspect the GMs love that. Having a young player with a positive ambition to improve is one thing, but add it to a player with the foundation Robinson has and he can literally become anything. Does he want to score? Maybe, but maybe Robison will develop as a pure playmaker. Maybe he does both. Because why not? That’s how Kevin Robinson rolls.

Player: Tom Fiddler @PremierBromanov
Position: Center
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 210lbs
Nationality: United States

Another two way forward with the ability to control the puck like none other, Tom Fiddler comes to us from the United States. Having your primary playmaker down the center of the ice is ideal as it opens up so many different passing lanes, which will make Fiddler valuable come draft day. Just like everyone else, he has a chance to show us more and more importantly show the GM’s who he is leading up to the draft.

Player: Antti Halonen @anttilahest
Position: Defense
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 185lbs
Nationality: Finland

A good height but on the smaller end of the weight for it, Antti Halonen is an up and coming offensive defenceman from Finalnd. Decent skater and a rocket of a shot Halonen is used to scoring form the point. He’s no slouch on defense either which is every important to the SMJHL teams.

Player: James Ronlain @Rankle
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 205lbs
Nationality: United States

James Ronlain has slain a great many deal of goaltenders throughout his young career with a deceptively good wrist shot, and one can only assume this will transfer onto the next league. Touted as one of the elite scorers in this year’s draft we know he’ll be going in the early rounds as you don’t see a player of his calibre come along often. We’ll see what the ceiling is like for him come prospect showcase time, but for now all we know is he is going to be good. Watch out and listen closely for Ronlain’s name to be called during draft day.

Player: Ryan Shepard @Naosu
Position: Center
Height: 6’
Weight: 190lbs
Nationality: Canada

The SMJHL flock is about to get their new Shepard. Hailing from the great north, Ryan Shepard is a true Canadian center. What we mean is he’ll pass first, take-your-dog-for-a-walk-when-your-sick kind of guy. Pure class on and off the ice Ryan Shepard is going to be a hot addition to the lucky Locker Room that gets him. He backchecks, wins draws, and passes like we mentioned earlier. Leadership quality are abundant with this one, so keep your ice on him for a future SMJHL Franchise captain.

Player: Lee Samson @Kingslayerlh
Position: Defense
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 210lbs
Nationality: United States

Lee Samson might not have the strength of Samson or his hair, but we doubt anyone can catch him on the ice to find out. A speedster on the backend, Samson can literally skate for days. He’s done it before for charity and I’m sure he can easily do it again. SMJHL teams are salivating at the idea of Samson logging big minutes on their blueline and I’m not surprised. He’s got face of the franchise, no not the player, written all over him.

Player: Marcus Ohlsson @CleverPin
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 225lbs
Nationality: Sweden

Marcus Ohlsson, from Sweden, is about to shock the SMJHL landscape. A strong, fast, defensive playmaker he checks a lot of the boxes that the SMJHL GM’s are looking for. Dedicated to the game and a very fast learner, you can expect Ohlsson to be playing Top 6 minutes to start the season. I would be very surprised if he drops out of the 1st round so pay close attention on draft night, otherwise you might blink and he’ll be gone.

Player: Daren Loop @kylerpool
Position: Center
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: United States

Other Daren Loop didn’t invent the Loopdy-Loop, he might as well have with his ability to seemingly shed defenders in a bizarre but entertaining fashion. He isn’t the fastest skater, but he’s certainly the most creative in order to find space. Much of this stems from his strong understanding of the game in the defensive zone and his ability to play from that zone out. A likeable guy, Loop will fit in with any locker room in the SMJHL.

Player: Nathaniel Voltguin @voltguin
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 187lbs
Nationality: United States

Nathaniel Voltguin is joining a draft class where 5’11” and 187lbs are “undersized” but don’t let that fool you as he’s a pure work horse. Scouts have never seen someone practice so hard day in and day out. His scoring ability is from his pure dedicated and work ethic on the ice. Spending time before and after practice firing 1000’s of pucks a day until it’s gotten to where it is now. Expect GM’s to jump over a player like this 100%.

Player: Henrik Lekberg Osterman @Thatguy91
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Sweden

A cool, even 6’ and 200lbs Henrik Lekberg Osterman is an expert passer and defender that patrols the left side of the ice as a forward. Very disciplined you don’t see him taking bad penalties and putting his team down ever, as he’s a real team first player. As a Swedish born player with high character he draws some comparables to some all time greats.

Player: Justin Roy @BuneJug
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 185lbs
Nationality: United States

Ting, ting, ting is all you hear when Roy is on the ice and in the zone. A marksman with a stick and a puck he’s a feared shot from the right side. Unbelievable first step and acceleration as well makes him a threat to walk out and score literally anywhere in the offensive zone. Scoring and skating are king so expect him to command tons of interest come draft day.

Player: Ace Oby @Aceit11
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 155lbs
Nationality: Canada

Please someone get this kid a steak! The lightest player so far in this draft Oby might blow away. It seems being light on his feet does help him with his skating ability and not to mention his ridiculous hands. Seriously, if the Draft had a skills competition before hand Oby would easily win the puck handling section as he’s light years ahead of the competition.  GM’s have taken notice.

Player: Ryan Daly @RyanDaly4545
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 205lbs
Nationality: United States

Daly is a pure sniper, and when I mean pure, I mean it. One of the best in placing the puck exactly where he needs it to go and he can do it at full speed on the rush and standing still with the one timer. His handles allow him to get valuable space from a defender and he uses it to his advantage for sure. Another player to keep your eye on in the Prospect Showcase to see how he preforms.

Player: Joseph Weston @ACapitalChicago
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 202lbs
Nationality: United States

Our pick for one of the biggest sleepers in the draft, Joseph Weston can literally go anywhere and have success. A good sized, fast skating left winger with a great release and commitment to play defense is the best thing a team could wish for. GM’s will be lining up to select this player, but who is going to be the lucky franchise that nabs this future SMJHL MVP (Oh yes we did)? We shall see.

Player: Keegan Battistoni @Nuggfoot
Position: Defense
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 185lbs
Nationality: United States

Our trend of US Born players that can snipe, skate, and play defense continue. Although we love his foundation, nothing has stood out from Keegan Battistoni just quite yet. He has the tools to succeed in the league no doubt. The question is will he be committed to getting better and helping his team? We shall see.

Player: Mr America @NotHulkHogan
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’6”
Weight: 300lbs
Nationality: United States

Thankfully Mr America is from America, or else that would be weird. Seriously do we need to take away the naming rights from some parents? Mr. America. Does Real American play out loud when he walks into a room? If so, that’s seriously impressive and I would draft him just for that. Anyways he can play defense and fight, what else would you expect from “Mr America”

Player: Phineas Gold @Z0REM
Position: Left Wing
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 190lbs
Nationality: United States

Phineas Gold has gone under the radar (literally) as we even missed him during one of our many edits to this article. However we're not sure how we even did that considering the prolific scorer that he is will mean that he will command serious attention from the draft floor. Good skating and great hands only increases his value even more. However the one big negative is his current defensive game. We're unsure if he knows how to play defense or if he simply chooses not to. Anywho, expect the SMJHL team that takes him to help turn that around.

Player: Jacob Riley @2000 Pontiac Grand Prix
Position: Defense
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: United States

Jacob Riley sounds like the American you’re picturing in your head. Big, strong, and knows a thing or two about defense. A solid defensive prospect Riley should be impressive come the Prospect Showcase in which we will see if his draft stock will rise or fall with the team interviews afterwards.

Player: Nikitnory McCrosbov @Paintball6786
Position: Center
Height: 6’
Weight: 188lbs
Nationality: Canada

Nikitnory McCrosbov has to be a fake name, right? If so, it’s light years ahead of McLovin’ just due to the fact I have no idea where McCrosbov sounds like it comes from. He comes from Canada, but you could have made a case for almost any country in the world with a name like that. Anyways he scores more than the Chimp from M.V.P, only he skates a bit better and has much better ankle support. His puck handling is something of envy as well

Player: Jake Miller @jakenbake
Position:  Defense
Height: 6’
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: United States

Jake Miller is yet another typical American defensive prospect. He could hold his own and then some in his own zone, he can move the puck fairly well, and he’s strong just like a farm boy. However, Miller goes the extra mile as he’s very disciplined when it comes to riding the line between rough and roughing. Having a player physically is one thing, but having someone do it without going to the box is another story. SMJHL GM’s will love this.

Player: Blake Phoenix @Blazewing
Position: Center
Height: 6’
Weight: 190lbs
Nationality: United States

Blake Phoenix is one letter away from the greatest name of all-time. He’s a great two-way center with the ability to find his open teammates anywhere on the ice. A very defensive player as well, he’s always in position to break up plays and turn them the other way up the ice. We’ll see what the future holds for Blaze Phoenix... I mean Blake. Damn, why couldn’t his parents name his Blaze? This is why we can’t have anything nice.

Player: Jose Miguel Pereira Ferreira @bartolo
Position: Center
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 225lbs
Nationality: Canada

We’ve seen some weird stuff so far, but do you honestly expect us to believe Jose Miguel Pereira Ferreira is from Canada? I mean… Honestly? Anyways he’s a pretty decent prospect on the ice. Good skating, decent passing, and decent at most things as well. Please someone check his passport or ID when given the chance though, he might be hiding something.

Player: Stacy Jefferson Jr. @Cbott81
Position: Defense
Height: 6’0
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Canada

Unlreated, did you know Stacy’s Mom by Fountains of Wayne came out in 2003? Well Stacy Jefferson Jr. Mom knows, since that was what she was binging listening too right around the time he was born. Anyways, this defensive prospect can stretch a pass like you wouldn’t believe, although he does get caught sometimes on defense his skating makes up for it to allow him to get right back into position. I hope Stacy’s Mom attends the upcoming SMJHL Draft. I would love to meet her.

Player: Berg Svensen @norge_anon
Position: Defense
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 230lbs
Nationality: Offensive Defenseman

Berg Svensen looks just like he sounds, just like a Viking. However, he may look a bit more like Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragons at the moment, but we promise that big ol’ beard is coming! A highly disciplined individual Svensen has some flaws in his game but we aren’t going to tell you what they are. We’re just going to pretend they’re not there so he doesn’t come try and raid our HQ.

Player: Jay Rook @rookie
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 232lbs
Nationality: Canada

Jay Rook, the big sexy Indian from Canada plays exactly how he sounds – sexy. With a great natural scoring knack and strong background in being defensively responsible Jay Rook is an ideal prospect for a team looking to boost their scoring and defense at the same time. We have high hopes for him, so hopefully we see him in the SMJHL very soon.

Player: Ursin Zimmermann @UrsinZ
Position: Defense
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Switzerland

Ursin Zimmermann perfectly captures the spirit of the country he’s from, Switzerland. He’s neutral at just about everything. With nothing that really stands out either good or bad he’ll make a safe pick for any SMJHL team. Hopefully he’s able to impress some teams with his personality in order to move up the draft board.

Player: Braden Kilner @jxryft
Position: Defense
Height: 6’
Weight: 200lbs
Nationality: Canada

Braden Kilner from Canada is another safe pick for a team not looking to take a huge risk. A good solid foundation Kilner has the ability to transform him game into whatever the SMJHL team that takes him needs. The prospect showcase may tell us more about him so we’ll wait to see how he preforms before adding anything else.

Player: Rhett Ward @Graves
Position: Right Wing
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 215lbs
Nationality: Canada

Rhett Ward is as solid as a Right Winger as they come. Hailing from Canada, Ward knows how to zip the puck around, and also zip himself around all over the ice while being an anchor to rely on defensively. Strong ability to win board battles and get the puck moving North towards the offensive zone, Ward will be a strong addition to an lucky SMJHL team.

Player: John Hawke @flamingduck
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 185lbs
Nationality: United States

One of the shortest players in this year’s class, John Hawke moves as such being a very strong skater and passer, which seems to be a trend this year. Decent at most other things this American is a late comer to the draft but can quickly explode up draft boards with a strong showing at the Prospect Showcase along with team interviews.

Player: Ricky Bobby @ImASurvivor
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 185lbs
Nationality: United States

If you ain’t first, you’re last so we can confidently say Ricky Bobby will go “last” in this year’s draft. Funny though, he doesn’t skate like the wind so I wonder what speed he’s talking about? Anyways Bobby is easily the oldest looking MFer in this year’s draft and probably looks closer to management than a Junior player. Can you imagine Ricky Bobby running a SMJHL? Oh boy would that be a disaster. Anyways say “Hi” to SMJHL’s future Last pick in the draft.

Player: Daniel Bischoff @dylanjj37
Position: Center
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 174lbs
Nationality: Switzerland
Daniel Bischoff is the skinny Swiss Center in this year’s draft. Smooth scoring is his trademark and believe me, he can put the puck in the net alright. He’ll need to improve his game at the next level but judging from his commitment that won’t be a problem at all. He’ll find his home in the SMJHL and he will thrive, mark our words!

Player: François Breton @treesap
Position: Left Wing
Height: 6’
Weight: 180lbs
Nationality: United States

François Breton sounds like the player you would find somewhere between Quebec and Cape Breton, but surprisingly he’s from the States. A good passer from the Left Wing with a good stride to boot. The prospect showcase will be a good change for SMJHL GMs to get a peek at him and to see what sort of character this player has as well.

Player: Daniel Kuster @kuschy
Position: Defense
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 198lbs
Nationality: Switzerland

Daniel Kuster is the smooth skating defensive prospect from Switzerland that adds let another quality player to this massive draft class. A strong showing prior to the draft, Kuster has gotten by with a hard and accurate shot on top of his impeccable defensive IQ. Although he probably won’t be taken in the earlier rounds he’ll be a solid pick for a SMJHL franchise this off-season.

Player: Johnny Patey @Patey
Position: Center
Height: 6’
Weight: 195lbs
Nationality: Canada

Like a few other prospects in this year’s draft Johnny Patey is decent at most things while playing a fairly safe game. You don’t notice him on the ice as he doesn’t really stand out but that is because he’s usually not making many mistakes as well. You can always improve on something and find your game in juniors but being able to come into a lineup and be trusted is simply something you cannot teach.

Player: Partario Scarangella @PartarioScarangella
Position: Right Wing
Height: 5’4”
Weight: 158lbs
Nationality: United States

I think someone got mixed up for the PeeWee tryouts and ended up on the SMJHL Prospect list. Is Partario Scarangella really 5’4”? Is his cousin Danny DeVito? He must be an Italian American. Watching the tape on this kid (I still think he’s 9) and he’s as fast a Lighting McQueen (who is still probably his hero). Boy can this Kid fly. Serious question, can he see over the boards when he’s on the bench?

Player: Augustus Wang @Ferda
Position:  Defense
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 190lbs
Nationality: Canada

Augustus Wang sounds like some sort of Roman Empire/Ming Empire fan fiction love story child, does it not? The rainbow orca himself as he likes to me called can play a mean game on the back end as he’s probably the best pure defender we have seen this year. He can still handle the puck, pass, and skate as well which really moves him up the draft list. Someone is going to take a chance on the rainbow orca, mark my words.

Player: Ben Collins @RadTech039
Position: Center
Height: 6’5”
Weight: 250lbs
Nationality: Germany

Ben Collins, the big man from the Deutschland is a physical force in the faceoff dot. However, the one surprising thing is his skating ability. For a person of that size and weight, you’re telling me he’s among one of the fastest players in this draft? That has for sure gotten him noticed by the SMJHL teams looking to play the fast game, while also having a physical presence. I predict Collins could be looking like he’s playing beer league by his second or third season, just doing whatever he wants on the ice while no one can stop him.

Player: Axel Caderoth @caderoth
Position: Center
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 210lbs
Nationality: Sweden

Axel Caderoth comes to us from Sweden, the land of great skilled hockey players. The surprising thing about Axel is he’s a big bodied, hard hitting, bench pressing son of a gun. A great Power Forward he’s caught some eyes and I would be surprised if a team doesn’t take a chance on him. With his physical ability combined with his skilled Swedish genes  he’s going to make a heck of a player.
