Anaheim Outlaws VS Halifax Raiders
Starting Goalies A battle between two veterans in the crease: Biz Nasty's in net for the Raiders, while promising American net-minder Patrick Niederreiter gets the nod for Anaheim. 1st Period 0:01 - GAME ON! Ivan Maximus wins the opening face-off against Halifax's Esa Parmborg to kick things off. 3:23 - GOAL! That didn't take long! Raiders defender FR Finn-Rhys finds TT Wawazat unmarked in the offensive zone, and the Finn fires a knuckler past Niederreiter to put his team on the board. Anaheim's keeper shakes his head and stares at the Jumbotron, wondering how that one managed to get by him. Current Score: [ANA 0 - 1 HFX] 4:33 - PENALTY! You hate to see it, folks. Just a second after the face-off, Anaheim's Anthony Banthony nearly takes Connor Tanner's head off with a punch that sends him reeling away in front of the referee. He gets 4 minutes, but in all fairness there may have been an argument for a game misconduct. 6:37 - GOAL! Banthony does the skate of shame back to his bench as the Raiders score just four seconds into the second half of his double-minor. Quick passes between TT Wawazat on the point and winger Cody at the half circle leave the Outlaws scrambling, before a pass is threaded to a wide-open Josef Kubinec, who fires off a no-nonsense wrister past Patrick Niederreiter's outstretched arm. Current Score: [ANA 0 - 2 HFX] 7:48 - PENALTY. Veteran defender Oliver Klozoff goes off for the Raiders, who need to keep focused now that they're down one of their best PKers. 12:38 - PENALTY. A nasty slash by Anaheim's Jerry Mander sends him to the penalty box. Some words are exchanged between the more vocal players on the two benches, before their coaches intervene to calm them down. 15:01 - PENALTY. Haley Knight tries to lift Gunnar Petrov's stick in the defensive zone but only manages to catch him in the helmet. She's out for two or less. 18:34 - You guessed it... PENALTY! This game's getting chippy, if it wasn't already. Jukka Jokinen continues the trend of messy stickwork as he slashes Connor Tanner on the ankle in the neutral zone. Tanner has words for the Finn on the way back to the bench, clearly feeling targeted by the Outlaws early in the game. 18:51 - Oh come on... PENALTY! Josef Kubinec loses an edge in the offensive zone, but rather than recover and get himself back into the play, he opts to grab a hold of Ivan Maximus' leg. There's no more obvious infraction than when a prone player brings down an opponent just skating by. Is there anything a coach hates more than a penalty cancelling out your powerplay? 1st Period Summary: At one point in the first period, it seemed like we might be in for a high-octane hockey game. But a constant march to the penalty box has brought the action to a crawl, not helped by the failure of either team to capitalize on the man advantage after Kubinec's tally early in the first. 2nd Period 5:33 - PENALTY. Yet another foul by the Raiders. This time it's Oliver Klozoff, who gets called for holding after losing out on a footrace deep in the Raiders zone. 6:27 - GOAL! They made him pay! Anaheim's Noah Tedla rockets a shot from the point, and it's almost as if it has eyes, as it finds its way past several players in front of Biz Nasty. You wonder, had Klozoff been out killing that penalty, would it have gone through? Current Score: [ANA 1 - 2 HFX] 6:28 - PENALTY. The Raiders are playing with fire here. Atlas Rush's stick catches Gunnar Petrov in the face just a second after the puck is dropped at center ice. Halifax can't afford to be sending the Outlaws to the power-play after how well they moved the puck on Tedla's goal moments before. 9:02 - GOAL! The Outlaws have tied it up! Despite stalwartly defending on the penalty kill, the Raiders are caught on a line change by a great outlet pass from defender Ursin Zimmerman to a pinching Rath McLeod. The rookie dekes Biz Nasty out of his jockstrap and tucks the puck neatly into a half-empty net to square things up. Current Score: [ANA 2 - 2 HFX] 11:40 - GOAL! Not so fast! A boisterous Karl Krashwagen creates some space for Jaakko Jarvinen, who slides the puck to an open Ricky Spanish. The Raider nails the top corner short-side and wheels away in celebration as Halifax retakes the lead. Current Score: [ANA 2 - 3 HFX] 12:36 - GOAL! Anaheim's not done either! Defender Jacob Riley scores a rare goal--just his second on the season-- from a point shot that finds its way through bodies in front. The goal is initially announced as being Lallo Selman's, who appeared to have gotten his stick on it, but a later correction indicates the puck was never touched on its way to the net. Current Score: [ANA 3 - 3 HFX] 14:59 - GOAL! What a move! Some quick passing from Adam Barron, Haley Knight, and Ricky Spanish leads to a clean entry into the Outlaws zone. Knight finds Timmo Kyllonen, who wows a raucous crowd in Halifax with an inside-out deke on Ursin Zimmerman before quickly snapping a shot an inch above Niederreiter's pad. This game's turning into a barn burner! Current Score: [ANA 3 - 4 HFX] 18:32 - PENALTY. Just minutes after giving the Raiders the lead for the third time in the game, Timmo Kyllonen is sent off for high-sticking. His teammates on the ice complain that his stick never actually touched Anthony Banthony, but the officials are having none of it. 2nd Period Summary: The Outlaws have done well to make the game competitive. The pressure has been building steadily, especially toward the end on the power play. But some critically timed defending from the Raiders PK has preserved their lead, and Anaheim's coach will be looking to his team to pick up the pace in the third. 3rd Period 2:52 - KRASHWAGEN! The young German rushes through both Anaheim defenders and takes a shot at the net. McLeod gets down to block it, and looks hurt on the play, but a determined Krashwagen picks up the loose puck and fires another shot on net. Niederreiter just barely hangs on to the rebound as Krashwagen initiates a shoving match with some Outlaws in the crease. Despite not scoring, the rookie is impressing with his physicality and tenacity. 7:02 - GREAT SAVE! Josef Kubinec has his shot marked at the far post, but Patrick Niederreiter just barely manages to get across and keep the puck out. Is that what Anaheim needs to get back into it? 7:14 - GAME DELAY. It'll be interesting to see how the teams come out from this break, as an errant shot has shattered a pane of glass behind the Anaheim goal. 9:04 - GOAL! The Outlaws have their work cut out for them now. Ricky Spanish and Karl Krashwagen get to work in front of Anaheim's crease, taking turns firing the puck on a scrambling Patrick Niederreiter. The Swiss goaltender is unable to keep the puck in his glove, and Spanish wheels back to the halfboard and fires a shot on goal that's tipped by Timmo Kyllonen for his second of the game. Current Score: [ANA 3 - 5 HFX] 13:39 - DING! Anaheim's Gunnar Petrov hits the post just above Biz Nasty's shoulder. He looks skyward as the play heads the other way... so close! 18:48 - ICING. A desperate Jacob Riley barely manages to clear the zone and relieve some pressure. The Outlaws offense seems disjointed, underlined by a pair of offsides that killed any momentum building for the visiting team. If you didn't know any better, you'd think the Raiders were the ones down two with only minutes to go. 20:00 - RAIDERS WIN! No one's happier than Halifax's Biz Nasty, who skates out of his crease to join his teammates at center ice. They salute the crowd with sticks in the air before leaving the arena with smiles on their faces, two points in the bag. Final Score:
Anaheim Outlaws 3 - 5 Halifax Raiders
Dud of the Game John Hawke (Winger, ) The diminutive winger had a poor game overall, so it was no surprise when he was effectively benched for most of it. When he did show up on the ice, his play was marred by timid reactions to physicality and errant passes that found their way to the opposition. He'll need to work harder if he wants to earn more trust from the Anaheim coaching staff. Unsung Hero FR Finn-Rhys (Defenseman, ) There was a fairly long run of traded powerplays between the two teams, and it's a small wonder they didn't capitalize on those chances. For the Raiders PK, Finn-Rhys was a figure that loomed large, especially on those occasions when it was Oliver Klozoff in the box. Finn-Rhys finished the game with 4 shot blocks, an assist, and several key takeaways that really underscored his defensive potential. It was an understated performance, but an important one. Three Stars ⭐⭐⭐ - Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat (Center, ) At times this season, Halifax coach Ed Ball has relied on TT Wawazat to spend minutes on the blueline, especially when veteran defender Oliver Klozoff was dealing with contract issues with his SHL club. His defensive awareness made it so you'd think he was a defender his entire life, and that ability was displayed in tonight's game. He may have scored and assisted on the two goals to start the game, but the Raiders relied on Wawazat heavily to keep Anaheim's offense under wraps. He rose to that challenge and was a big part in why the Outlaws offense stagnated late in the third. ⭐⭐ - Timmo Kyllonen (Center, ) One goal was a skilled deflection on a Ricky Spanish shot. The other was a highlight reel move past an Anaheim defender that led to a brilliant shot finding its way in. Finland's Timmo Kyllonen put on an offensive display, one that had the Outlaws on their heels whenever he was on the ice. ⭐ - Ricky Spanish (Winger, ) More often than not, the player that takes home first-star accolades is one that gives a multi-dimensional performance. The same holds true tonight, as Ricky Spanish put on a clinic on offense and defense. The mysterious winger had two assists and a goal, while also putting in four-plus minutes on the penalty kill. Games like his underline how important it is to be aware of all aspects of a game, especially in the SMJHL; Raider's head coach Ed Ball will be pleased with Spanish's performance in this one. ■ [1726 words]

Physical Play Comparison
Lots of penalties in this game, but it doesn’t seem to have hurt the hit total much. Fairly average game in terms of total number of hits counted in it. Anaheim with a good number at 20, while Halifax had a bit of a low number of hits at 12. For the Outlaws, Anthony Archer, Anthony Banthony, Ivan Maximus, and Leonid Kofix each had 3 hits. For the Raiders, no one really stood out. Blocks were quite even, slightly favoring Halifax, 9 to 7. Ursin Zimmermann had 3 blocks for Anaheim, while Finn-Rhys had 4 for Halifax. I give the physical edge to Anaheim in this one. It doesn’t appear to have helped them much, losing 5 to 3. Shots were equal and Anaheim even had 1 more power play chance than Halifax. I’d say the Raiders just outplayed the Outlaws, so the physical play didn’t make much difference. ANA Hits: 20 HFX Hits: 12 ANA SB: 7 HFX SB: 9

Killing Time in the Box
This game, like many this season, was marred with penalties. Anaheim spent 10 minutes down a man while Halifax was down for 12 minutes. Games can be won and lost on special teams but both PK units did pretty well tonight. Halifax's Josef Kubinec opened up the special teams scoring during the first Power Play of the game, though it was a 4 minute contest as Anthony Banthony took a terrible roughing double minor. This was followed in the 2nd period by a goal from Noah Tedla during a Oliver Klozoff trip to the sin bin. This was actually Noah's first goal of the season although he had racked up almost 20 assists. This game also saw 2 4-on-4 showdowns as well with neither team putting points on the board. There were a few close calls, but Halifax was able to exploit Anaheim's even strength weaknesses and came out on top. (151 words) 3 Stars of the Game 3 - Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat Wawazat came in to this game like a wrecking ball. He put up Halifax's first goal of the night at 3:23 into the 1st period and followed it only a little over 3 minutes later with a secondary assist on the Power Play to put Halifax at a 2-0 advantage early in the opening period. 2 - Timmo Kyllonen Timmo put up two goals in tonight's contest which were his 8th and 9th goals of the season. Both came in at even strength and both also came off of assists from Haley Knight and Ricky Spanish. 1 - Ricky Spanish Speaking of Ricky Spanish - he's our first star of the game. Ricky had an impressive showing tonight with 2 assists and 1 goal on 5 shots. This is an extremely impressive showing from the 3rd line winger and the 3 point night brought him up to 21 points for the season. Outings like this will likely get him bumped up to top 6 minutes in no time. (160 words)

Faceoff Wins
Were back for another faceoff analysis here. This proved to be quite a close game and both teams were fairly equal in faceoffs. The outlaws pulled 44 faceoffs for a 49% win percentage and the Raiders pulled 46 for a 51% win percentage. This is probably one of the closest games we have analyzed this year with such a high amount of faceoffs in three periods of hockey. Ivan Maximus for the Outlaws seems to continue his stellar rookie season by participating in 38 faceoffs of the 90 and coming away with 19 wins. If the Outlaws want to continue strong into the end of the season they should look towards bolstering their 3rd and 4th line centers so they can relieve some of this pressure building on this franchise center.

(Losing) Player of the Game
Noah Tedla (D) – My (Losing) Player of the Game this time is Noah Tedla. Tedla scored the first goal of the game for the Anaheim Outlaws in the second period in this 5-3 game against the Halifax Raiders assisted by Kevin Robinson and the great Swiss defenseman Ursin Zimmerman. The other goals of the game were scored by Rath McLeod and Jacob Riley. Tedla had 2 shots on goal, the other coming just seconds before he scored his goal. He also managed to block two shots – one by Esa Pamborg in the first period and the other by Ricky Spanish in the third, being one of only three players on the Outlaws to block any shots at all. |
