Reflection of the Regular Season

With the regular season coming to an end, I thought it would be fitting to reflect on my first experiences being a professional hockey player with the Vancouver Whalers before switching all of my focus onto trying my best to produce in the upcoming playoffs. This year, I have seen many ups and downs within myself. Some of my lowest lows were with my frustration with myself in my inability to produce anything of substance. Being in the locker room with a rookie defenseman that outscores you isn’t the best for you mentality, but I saw it as a test to improve, both on and off ice. While I didn’t put in as many hours in the gym as someone like Ohlsson (259 TPE, the God), I made sure to scrutinize every workout I committed myself to, every meal I ate, every after-game video replay to ensure that I fixed my mistakes. This lead to one of my biggest “ups” this season, making it from the 4th line to the 3rd with the Faceoff God himself, Marcus Weiser (@omenolson) and Cullen, where I finally began to find my stride and began to produce. I started noticing myself improving every day, every workout, every game. I managed to start racking up the points, ending the regular season with the most points among the rookies, and going from a -11 and ending the regular season at a -5. With the negativity pushed out of my mind, I began attempting to develop my personality around the boys, began trying the cocky look. The GMs (@dmills3) seemed to like it, but it's not really my thing; I'll probably end up returning my fur coat when I have the time. The leadership in this locker room is immense. It didn’t matter if they were long lasting veterans, or boys in their 2nd year in the SMJHL, everyone stepped up to help out the new boys, joke around with us, and make us feel welcome. I found myself getting comfortable around the loudmouth Bovvy (@Nokazoa) and the quiet but hilarious Weiser. These bonds, however, lead to a huge low with the boys. Tabarnak. I know it's a team game, but maybe if I had been better about getting to the gym earlier in the mornings, or managed to put in just a little more effort during practices, or learned how to shoot I could have changed something. I didn’t speak to Claude all that much, but strangely enough, I found myself oddly interested in how Jon (@C9Van) conducted his business around the rink. I didn’t talk to him all that much, but his outbursts reminded me a lot of my favourite uncles growing up. I wish him all the best in whatever he does over in Halifax. I can’t let that hold me back, though. From here on, it’s playoff mode, and I’m here to try my best and do my part. Plus, our GMs said that if I don’t do well, I can’t get my kennel back. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ François Breton
