Hot Potato Trophy - SMJHL S50 Sim 1

Tracking Spreadsheet

Hello All!   Welcome back to the SMJHL Season 50 Hot Potato reports!   I'm your host Kent Brockman here again for what is sure to be a wonderful season of hockey while tracking the Spectacular Spud, the Tenacious Tater, The One, The Only, The Hot Potato.

Atlas Rush has been keeping good care of The Potato throughout the off season, but I would bet that The Potato has overstayed his welcome and Atlas will be looking to dump it off to an unsuspecting Armada player the first chance he gets.

SMJHL S50 Game 3 - HFX @ ANC

SMJHL Game 3 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Atlas Rush @Rublic
Team: Halifax Raiders
Victim: N/A
Team: Anchorage Armada
Time: N/A
Total possession time:  1:00:00
Hot po-take-to:    And here we are after a full 60 minutes of regulation and Atlas Rush is still The Protector of the Produce.  You wouldn't know that Rush had over 21 minutes of ice time by the score sheet.  He's running double duty on the 1st and 4th lines, first line Power Play unit, as well as first line PK and it's no wonder he didn't hit anyone this game.  The Raiders are asking a lot from the winger this game.  Then add the extra weight from The Potato and you might have thought that the Armada tied an anchor onto Rush.  So after a long offseason Atlas will be spending at least one more day with The Potato before their match up with the Scarecrows.

SMJHL S50 Game 7 - STL @ HFX

SMJHL Game 7 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Atlas Rush @Rublic
Team: Halifax Raiders
Victim: Flash Gordon @twerkin4jesus
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Time: 0:24 of 1st period
Total possession time:  0:24
Hot po-take-to:  In pregame talks Rush commented that one of his early priorities in this game is to get The Potato out of his possession as soon as possible.   After his absolute disappearance in the season opener Rush wants to start over again.  At just 24 seconds into the opening frame Flash Gordon was charging through the neutral zone and got absolutely crushed by Rush.   This hit shook up Gordon a bit as he labored his way over to the bench carrying The Potato.   Atlas Rush skated by the St. Louis bench and left a few choice words for The Potato but seemed to revel in his new freedom.   Flash Gordon, however, seemed to immediately become weighed down by The Potato.   He put in a few shifts in the first period but never seemed to get into his game.

SMJHL Game 7 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Flash Gordon @twerkin4jesus
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Victim: FR Finn-Rhys @FinnRhys
Team: Halifax Raiders
Time: 0:03 of 2nd period
Total possession time:  19:39
Hot po-take-to:  During the intermission Gordon was interviewed and stated that he felt the inclusion of The Potato into the SMJHL was unnecessary and causes undue burden on those that are carrying it.  Right then his teammate, Sasha Dangelchek, popped over and told Gordon to "stop being a little bitch and hit someone".  Flash seemed to take this advice to heart as on the first possession following the start of the 2nd period Gordon hit Finn-Rhys after taking the puck from the opening faceoff to bring The Potato back into the Raider's possession.

SMJHL Game 7 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: FR Finn-Rhys @FinnRhys
Team: Halifax Raiders
Victim: Sasha Dangelchek @acdangel
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Time: 2:51 of 2nd period
Total possession time:  2:48
Hot po-take-to:  Finn-Rhys got to his feet screaming at Gordon for the hit and was ushered over to the bench to cool off.   Immediately upon starting his next shift he began looking for a 'crow to get even with.   The defenseman wanted nothing more than to have one of those straw filled bastard to enter his zone with the puck.   Fortunately his chance came up quickly as Sasha Dangelcheck came across the blue line with the puck and was taken hard into the boards by Finn-Rhys.   When getting back to his feet Dangelcheck noticed the unfamiliar weight in his waistband and realized that Finn-Rys slipped him The Spud.

SMJHL Game 7 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Sasha Dangelchek @acdangel
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Victim: N/A
Team: Halifax Raiders
Time: N/A
Total possession time:  37:09
Hot po-take-to:  With karma working against him, Dangelcheck toted The Hot Potato around for the remainder of the game.   It seems that Sasha couldn't get comfortable with his new companion and was seen repeatedly moving The Potato from hand to hand as if The Potato was in fact hot.   Maybe the Czech native is sensitive to heat, but this is the first time we've seen a skater actually complain not just about the heft, but also the temperature of The Potato.  His tunnel vision with The Potato left him without another hit in the game and he'll have to figure out a plan for holding onto The Potato for another day.

SMJHL S50 Game 10 - DET @ STL

SMJHL Game 10 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Sasha Dangelchek @acdangel
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Victim: Josh Driver @jblock3
Team: Detroit Falcons
Time: 8:55 of 1st period
Total possession time:  8:55
Hot po-take-to:  Now a few games into the 50th season and reporters are talking about The Curse of The Potato again.   It seems many skaters just can't produce when in possession of The Potato and a real stigma is associated with it's possession.  However - The Potato brings crowds.   Today's match up between the Scarecrows and the Falcons brought in a sold out crowd.   Let's see if Dangelcheck can beat the curse or if he'll languish in the pool of carbohydrates until he is able to pass it on.

True to form Sasha was still extremely preoccupied with The Potato during each of his shifts.  He did decide to substitute one of his gloves for an oven mitt and the refs allowed it as they determined it was not there to give him an advantage.   This is sure to cause a stir in the SMJHL, but the game must go on.   Dangelcheck finally found a victim in Josh Driver immediately after Driver won a faceoff in the defensive zone.  However - now that The Potato was out of his possession Dangelcheck had to immediately shed his glove and found his way to the bench.

SMJHL Game 10 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Josh Driver @jblock3
Team: Detroit Falcons
Victim: Yamamoto Mitsuharu @TML99
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Time: 9:01 of 1st period
Total possession time:  0:06
Hot po-take-to:  In what is likely to be the shortest time of possession this season Josh Driver immediately hits Mitsuharu after taking control of The Potato and sends it back to the Scarecrow bench.  Like many players, Driver is a very superstitious man and he clearly did not want to deal with the uncertainty that comes along with The Potato.

SMJHL Game 10 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Yamamoto Mitsuharu @TML99
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Victim: Khabib Nurmagomedov @hhh81
Team: Detroit Falcons
Time: 10:03 of 2nd period
Total possession time:  21:02
Hot po-take-to:  Mitsuharu seemed to take the realization of possessing The Potato in stride and taped it to the back of his helmet and went right back to the game.  It appeared the center barely noticed his additional companion and continued to set up his teammates with faceoff wins and clean passes.  The Scarecrows have continued to absolutely demolish Detroit and after going up 5-1 early in the second Detroit made a change of goalie.  Detroit scored shortly thereafter and Mitsuharu seemed to be a bit concerned his luck was running out.   On his next shift he found Nurmagomedov near the boards and laid a clean hit to pass on The Potato to try to stop the Falcons from gaining momentum.

SMJHL Game 10 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: Khabib Nurmagomedov @hhh81
Team: Detroit Falcons
Victim: James Ronlain @Rankle
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Time: 3:12 of 3rd period
Total possession time:  13:09
Hot po-take-to:  Mitsuharu's plan appears to have worked as shortly after passing The Potato back to the Falcons St. Louis was able to find the back of the net again. Nurmagomedov was able to pass The Potato off to James Ronlain after contributing only icings to the score sheet in his 13:09 of Potato possession.

SMJHL Game 10 Advanced Taterlytics Report:
Posessor: James Ronlain @Rankle
Team: St. Louis Scarecrows
Victim: N/A
Team: Detroit Falcons
Time: N/A
Total possession time:  16:48
Hot po-take-to: After all the back and forth The Potato ended back up in Scarecrow hands. However, they laid down quite the beating on Detroit tonight so while the players holding The Potato don't seem to be producing much, their teammates definitely have. Stay tuned and see if the Scarecrows can take this momentum into tomorrow.
