Media Graders Posting Freak Vancouver Whalers vs Carolina Kraken
7 - 2 Game Link Welcome to the post-game show for Vancouver Whalers vs Carolina Kraken! Carolina came into this game after a great start to their season with a 3-1-0 record and an impressive goal differential of +9. Vancouver on the other hand had started out a little slower with a 3-1-1 record. Most people had bet on Carolina to win this game after they earlier in the season had beaten Vancouver by 4-1. No one expected what was about to happen... Period 1 The first couple of minutes of the game came with shots on both nets. But a strong counter attack by Carolina in the second minute of the game resulted in their first goal after a beautiful tic-tac-toe play between Bobby Lane, Padraig Sarantez and Joseph Weston. The faceoff taken after the goal was won by Carolina’s Michael Fitted. Jean-Paul Boivin didn’t like losing the faceoff and went after Michael just as he had passed the puck to a teammate. The hit took Michael down to the ice and he had to take a second to get back on his feet. Zbigniew Pokrywka took offence to the hit and had, what we can only assume to be, a less-than-friendly conversation with Jean-Paul. No fight broke out and the players kept playing, but Zbigniew clearly had some anger still in him and boarded Vancouver’s Mikas Bieksa, which resulted in a minor penalty. This was just what Vancouver needed as only 22 seconds into the powerplay Vancouver scored. After this Vancouver took over the first period and only allowed Carolina one more dangerous zone possession. Vancouver on the other hand started doing almost whatever they wanted, scoring two more goals and chasing Nolan McMahon before the end of the first. In came Mike Hroch for Carolina. Period 2 The second period started like the first one ended. With Vancouver pressure. The puck was brought into Carolina’s zone almost immediately and only one minute into the second, Vancouver scored their fourth. Even after this goal Vancouver took possession yet again and we could clearly note that tempers were heating up for Carolina. Padraig Sarantez got on the ice with a purpose and recorded a couple of hits before going overboard with a slash on The stingray that Killed steve irwin. Unfortunately for him, Vancouver’s powerplay unit had what’s probably their best day of the season and scored again almost immediately. There weren’t many dangerous chances after this, and both teams only recorded a total of 12 shots on goal. However, more penalties were to come. Carolina received two more minors which included a delay of game from the goalie himself, Mike Hroch. Vancouver got their first penalty after Victor Toeman interfered with Ricky Bobby. Neither team was able to score on these powerplay opportunities. Period ended 5-1. Period 3 The third period calmed down in terms of hits and penalties but boy did Vancouver come out blasting. After only five minutes of play a total of 14 shots had been delivered. 11 of those were from Vancouver. Mike Hroch did his best to keep Carolina in the game and made multiple great saves on one-timers and deflections alike. Carolina did get some time to breath after Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. decided to hold on to Joseph Weston a little too tight and got himself a holding minor. Carolina gladly took this chance as it allowed them to properly set up in Vancouver’s zone. After multiple dangerous shots White Goodman couldn’t keep the puck out any longer, and the score became 5-2. Giving Carolina a glimpse of hope. This wouldn’t last very long however, as less than a minute later, Carolina received another penalty which allowed Vancouver’s Mikas Bieksa to complete his hat trick and take the Whalers back up to a 4-goal lead. After this Carolina kept trying to force through the wall that White Goodman had turned into. He stopped every oncoming shot after that without leaving a single rebound. Vancouver finally killed off any remaining hope for Carolina in the 14th minute of the period with a deflection goal off of Francois Breton, putting them up 7-2. After this we didn’t see much from Carolina but Vancouver wanted more as they kept attacking and shooting, but unable to gain anything more, until the final whistle. Three Stars 1 - Mikas Bieksa 2 - Marcus Ohlsson 3 - Francois Breton Past Players

Interesting Stats
As the score shows the Vancouver Whalers dominated the Carolina Kraken winning 7-2 and out shooting the Kraken 36-20. Now the stats i find interesting all come into play around both of Carolina’s goal, the first isn't as outrageous but both of Carolina’s goals came in the first 2 ½ minutes of play in their respective periods, the 1st and third. With Vancouver also scoring within that time in the 2nd period. But the stats that i found interesting is that after both of Carolina’s goals, Carolina would quickly take a penalty, 43 seconds after their first goal, and just 6 seconds after their second goal. Then following these penalties Vancouver would score a power play goal less than a minute into their man advantage. 22 seconds after Carolina’s first penalty, and 39 seconds after the other penalty. This really shows how Vancouver gave Carolina absolutely no breathing room throughout the entire game.

Comment 1: Unluckiest shots
Puck luck Lacking. For today’s segment of odd facts, we will be discussing the unlucky souls who have been blessed with flesh, by that I mean shooting bodies instead of nets. The topic for today is whom has had the most shots blocked and why that might be. To start off, Carolina Kraken forward Stirling MacTavish managed to take three shots in the game and had not a single one managing to go through and make it to the actual net. Uncanny luck for the Rookie whom would had stood at third on the team in shot totals had he been able to make it through the mess of ankles in front of the Vancouver net. 116 Words Comment 2: Faceoff Rivals Rivalries at the . There have been quite a few rivalries through the league, but are any brewing right now? Looking at the stats for whom faced who the most on the dot, there seems to be one that is in full swing. Jean-Paul Boivin and Phineas Gold have been a thorn in each others sides all game. Having a tying number of seven attempts against one another, they remain the closest at 4 wins for Boivin and 3 for Gold. However, the most dominating bout of the night was between Petrovic and Gold, where Petro managed to get 5 wins to the 1 of Gold. 105 Words Comment 3: Missed shots When it comes to whiffing, unfortunately it happens a lot. Tonight the net was missed a total of 31 times. Which would surely have increased the shot total and lead to some goals, if only the shooters could hit the barn door. For the most part it seems that accuracy was a strong point for most, but we do have a few loose cannons taking up about half. The worst offender of them all was Bobby Bobcalf who missed the net a whopping four times. Interestingly enough though, half his misses came in the dying minutes of the game, almost like he wanted to win? Make your own decisions on that. 111 Words

Stay out of the Sin Bin
Hockey is hard enough at even strength but with the skill of today's players, being short handed really hurts. Carolina realized that tonight as they surrendered five shorthanded opportunities which Vancouver used to score three of their goals. No one player was responsible for more than a single penalty but racking up five minors will really put your team in a tough spot. Nobody enjoyed the extra man time more than Vancouver player Mikas Bieksa who managed to score his second and third goals of the game for a hat trick on the power play. That propelled Mikas to the top player of the game honors. Code: 106 Words Can I Get a Hand? The second assist in hockey has been widely debated as to whether it should count as a point. If you look at most plays, the second pass is often as important or more than the last one before the goal. A key breakout, a quick move around the zone, or a tic tac toe goal, they all rely on strong passing. In this game Vancouver managed to get a double assist on all seven goals. This is not an easy feat but the team moved the puck around so well that they deserved it. This was a key to their success and they will look to repeat this moving forward. 3 underrated players of the game!
1. Stracimir Petrovic - Only tallying a little over 13 minutes in the game for ice time he was still able to an assist,1 shot, and go a very impressive 11/14 for faceoffs. 2. Padraig Sarantaz - Hard to have an underrated player on a team that got creamed 7-2 on the scoreboard but Padraig here did get a goal and an assist to even help get those 2 points. He only went -1 after all those opposing goals and had 4 shots and 5 hits to add to it. 3. Velveteen Dream - Also tough because he was on the losing team but he was -1 overall as well. Went 3 out of 4 coming in for faceoff relief and had 3 hits as well. Plus got a little time on the penalty kill even if it was a moot point in this blowout. |
