As Whalers got eliminated from playoffs on third round and their season is now over, that also concludes first whaling season. For S51 I have awarded three to one whales to best three players of Whalers and now that there is no more whaling to be done I'm here to award best players of season 51, almost all awards are based on both
Like all good awards they need to be named after players and I used huge sample size of 20 games from S50 to get good names for these awards. So let us start: Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. Award This award is given to a rookie player who during season has most Whales. Often rookies have smaller role in team and them being one of top 3 players of the team isn't too common. This season award goes to player that was also top scoring rookie of regular season with 6 goals and 5 assists adding 2 goals and assists during playoffs. He got most of his whales during regulation with 4 triple whale performances. First ever winner of Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. Award goes to: Nicholas Corrigan @scottisheyebrow - 13 Whales Runner up: Sven Yxskaft @kenvald - 7 Whales Björn Leppänen Award As Whales are simple and often based on things like points, as who does not like someone scoring a hat-trick, we need an award that still is based on scored points but is given to player with high points to Whale ratio with some math to make sure its just not an award for lowest whale count. This is also one of awards that defenseman have legit shot to take home, but this season award goes winger who had decent scoring with 3 goals and 18 assists during regulation while most of the time his performance was just below the first line. During playoffs he scored only a goal and 2 assists which did not net him any more whales. Winner of Björn Leppänen Award is: Dario Medici @ThatDamnWalrus - 8 Whales / 24 points Runner up: Mikas Bieksa @ontanis - 13 Whales / 33 points François Breton Award Talking about awards that defense and goalies can ignore, François Breton Award is given to player who uses their time on ice most efficiently. Anyone who took look at this seasons scoring for Whalers might be familiar with our first line and while they were lot on ice they spend their time there well. This award goes to player who had average time on ice at 19 minutes, scoring 67 points in 68 games. Winner of François Breton Award is: Jan Zacha @StaticShocked - 2.46 Whales per 60 minutes on ice Runner up: Bobby Bobcalf @nubbedindaribs - 2.25 Whales per 60 minutes on ice Marcus Ohlsson Award What is better than gaining lots of whales? Taking them home game after game and for long time award for longest streak looked like one players game but that was changed in playoffs as we have our first ever tie for an award. Both these players managed to score streak that was two games higher than next ones on the list so I'm not wasting space for 3 way tie for runner up when we have tied win. So winners of Marcus Ohlsson Award are: Jan Zacha - Streak of 5 games François Breton @treesap - Streak of 5 games Jean-Paul Boivin Award Before last season we thought that every team needs someone who can pass and as this biased award system values goals over assists this awards exists to be given to someone who makes huge contributions to teams success but still falls behind best of the team time after time or scores their points steadily over long period of time. Jean-Paul Boivin Award goes to player who has most single whale performances during season. This time it does not go to someone with low scoring as this player scored 24 goals during regulation and added 8 more in playoffs scoring 68 points in 68 games. Winner of Jean-Paul Boivin Award: François Breton - 11 Single whale performances Runner up: Jan Zacha - 9 Single whale performances The stingray that Killed stewe irwin Award Longest award of them all, awarded to player who has most double whale performances, so they are clearly at least somewhat better than player who got single whale or at least they did suck less at that particular game, sometimes you get 2 whales by scoring 1+3 while next game someone gets them by not taking penalties or being on ice when your team got scored against despite playing 22 minutes. This season this award goes to a player who had his best season in juniors and led team in points with 56 on regulation and 70 in 68 games. The stingray that Killed stewe irwin Award goes to: Bobby Bobcalf - 11 Double whale performances Runner up: Jan Zacha - 10 Double whale performances Bobby Bobcalf Award So now that Bobby got an award we can have one named after him. With my creative mind I decided that we need also an award for player with most triple whale performances. So this goes to player who most often was selected to be best player from Whalers. All I will spoil is that both goalies got some of these triple whale games and this award goes to one of them as often when games are close, low scoring ones there is not much points going around no matter if it is a loss or a win and they are often decided by goaltending (it wont be close if either one sucks). So winner for Bobby Bobcalf Award is: White Goodman @Jearim - 12 Triple whale performances Runner up: Bobby Bobcalf - 9 Triple whale performances Cullen Gray Award What could be better than counting number of whales for a season? Counting them for shorter, more important period as it is easier and stakes are higher. Cullen Gray Award goes to player who stepped up to top when it mattered the most, meaning the player who collected most whales during playoffs. While many players had good performances over playoffs only one of them can be the best. This player was tied for most points in team with 19 points but scoring more goals than the other one pushed him to top in Whale count. Winner of Cullen Gray Award is: François Breton - 16 Whales in playoffs Runner up: White Goodman - 13 Whales in playoffs White Goodman Award Anyone have noticed how name of awards and players winning them have not lined up? Well here things don't change as we look at award that ignores amount of whales and focuses on consistency of getting them. White Goodman Award goes to player who had most of any whale performances during season so someone who was most often contributing above others when it mostly comes to winning (or trying to win) games. Here I'm forced to have three names as runner up is tied and whole first line of Whalers is making up that close top three, but who is on top? Well, winner for White Goodman Award is: Jan Zacha - 27 Times whaling Runner up: Bobby Bobcalf & François Breton - 26 Times whaling Jan Zacha Award Here we are at last, the ultimate award for best whaler of the season, not the best player of the Whalers but player who did the most whaling, though they might not be mutually exclusive. Being close to top for whole season and finally taking first place during playoffs, player who had best regular season of any Whaler since season 45 when Jack Kennedy scored 60 points. Winner of Jan Zacha Award is: Bobby Bobcalf - 55 Whales Runner up: Jan Zacha - 53 Whales Congratulations to all winner and just to get more money out of this below is full list of all players and their Whale counts for season 51, which I did need to edit a bit as discord did not allow messages with more than 2000 characters: SEASON 51 WHALE STOCK TOTAL (Regular + Playoffs) 55 (44+11) Bobby Bobcalf 53 (45+8) Jan Zacha 48 (32+16) Francois Breton 43 (30+13) White Goodman 31 (20+11) Noah Andros 25 (19+6) Jean-Paul Boivin 22 (15+7) Marcus Ohlsson 17 (9+8) Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. 13 (12+1) Mikas Bieksa 13 (12+1) Nicholas Corrigan 16 (4+12) Raquel Castillo Gutierrez 18 (10+8) Stacimir Petrovic 14 (9+5) The stingray that Killed steve irwin 8 Dario Medici 7 Sven Yxskaft 6 Austin Powers 6 Kasperi Braulin 6 (5+1) Sureshot Dombrowski 3 Victor Toeman 2 Justin Womack 2 Sabo Tage Triple Whale 12 x White Goodman 9 x Bobby Bobcalf 8 x Jan Zacha 7 x Francois Breton 5 x Noah Andros 4 x Nicholas Corrigan 4 x Raquel Castillo Gutierrez 3 x Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. 3 x Marcus Ohlsson 2 x Mikas Bieksa 2 x Austin Powers 2 x Kasperi Braulin 2 x Jean-Paul Boivin 1 x Victor Toeman 1 x Dario Medici 1 x Stracimir Petrovic 1 x Sven Yxskaft 1 x The stingray that Killed steve irwin Double Whale 11 x Bobby Bobcalf 10 x Jan Zacha 8 x Jean-Paul Boivin 8 x Francois Breton 5 x Noah Andros 5 x Marcus Ohlsson 5 x Stacimir Petrovic 3 x Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. 2 x Dario Medici 2 x Sureshot Dombrowski 2 x Mikas Bieksa 2 x The stingray that Killed steve irwin 1 x Justin Womack 1 x Sabo Tage 1 x White Goodman 1 x Sven Yxskaft 1 x Raquel Castillo Gutierrez Single Whale 11 x Francois Breton 9 x Jan Zacha 7 x The stingray that Killed steve irwin 6 x Bobby Bobcalf 6 x Noah Andros 5 x White Goodman 5 x Stacimir Petrovic 3 x Marcus Ohlsson 3 x Jean-Paul Boivin 3 x Mikas Bieksa 2 x Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. 2 x Sven Yxskaft 2 x Raquel Castillo Gutierrez 2 x Sureshot Dombrowski 1 x Dario Medici 1 x Nicholas Corrigan STREAKS Current (best) Jan Zacha (5) Francois Breton (5) Noah Andros (3) Bobby Bobcalf (3) Stracimir Petrovic (3) White Goodman (2) Jean-Paul Boivin (2) Kasperi Braulin (2) Raquel Castillo Gutierrez (2) Mikas Bieksa (2) The stingray that Killed steve irwin (2) Happy Whaling everyone, wonder if I'll do this next season.
