Von Arx Interview
#1

Interviewer: “We want to thank you for sitting down with us today, Jack. I’ll start by asking how everything is going and has gone, with your recovery from offseason wrist surgery?”

Jack Von Arx: “Great, things have been great. The procedure I had was minor and it was just to clean up some bone fragments that were lingering from a fracture I got in my Liga sophomore season. For a while, my wrist would aggravate me, and I haven’t had any issues since surgery.”

Interviewer: “The procedure caused you to miss out on the SMJHL draft. Does that bother you at all?”

Jack Von Arx: “Eh, not really. I mean, it would’ve been cool to be a part of the draft process, but all eyes are on the much bigger prize that hopefully awaits in the S53 SHL draft. Had I waited to have my surgery; I could’ve missed out on that.”

Interviewer: “You’ve spent some time training with at the Swiss World Juniors complex. Has that training put you in the shape you feel you need to be to step into the SMJHL season?”

Jack Von Arx: “Absolutely. The training there has been intense and it’s Prilly. When you work out in Prilly for as long, any other location on the planet seems like a luxury. But the coaches have been great and the talent at these camps is awesome. It’s going to be tough to crack the World Juniors roster for the Swiss team when the time comes, but I feel my training here has given me a much better understanding of what it takes.”

Interviewer: “Regarding the SMJHL, have you heard from any teams?”

Jack Von Arx: “I have heard from a few teams looking to shore up their defense and I’ve reached out to a couple of teams that I’d be interested in playing for. I’m hoping to get on a roster by next week.”

Interviewer: “What teams are you interested in playing for?”

Jack Von Arx: “I’m not going to mention any out of respect for the process of free agency, but I’ll say there’s a couple of locations I’d like to be in. But don’t get me wrong, I’ll play anywhere there’s an opportunity. I am very appreciative of the teams that have spent their time talking with me and giving me great insight into their organizations. The SMJHL has excellent general managers.”

Interviewer: “We’ve heard your head coach at Red Lions, Raphael Zahner, say that ice hockey players in the area you grew up around Reinach, don’t see much attention from scouts. Why do you think that is?”

Jack Von Arx: “It’s just a small market. Reinach has been the home to some of the greatest women's hockey players, but there’s an extreme few from the men’s ice that makes it out of Switzerland. Guys like me are hoping to make some noise and eventually change that. We do have a lot of under-the-radar talent in Reinach.”

Interviewer: “What do you think the strengths of your game are, right now?”

Jack Von Arx: “Right now, I’m an opportunist. I like to move the puck and create shots…make plays. I love to skate and love imposing my will on the opposition. I also love to disrupt. I think I see the puck much better than those around me.”

Interviewer: “How about your weaknesses?”

Jack Von Arx: “Probably checking and playing more of a physical game. In Liga 1, we can get away with just being finesse players. The ice is bigger, and the game is more spread out. We rely more on moving the puck to get an advantage on the international ice. In North America, hits and forechecking are a large part of the game. Knowing this, I admit that I have to improve with my physical play.”

Interviewer: “Looking further ahead, are there any SHL teams in particular, that you’d like to play for?”

Jack Von Arx: “Oh yeah, a little early but…um, there are some cities I think would be awesome to play in for, but no, not really. I just want the opportunity to get on the ice, grow, and do something great at the professional level. Playing for teams that are always trying to win is important, but let’s be honest, what team isn’t trying to win?”

Interviewer: “Let’s imagine all SMJHL general managers and coaches are watching right now, and some might be, what do you want to say to them? Why should they sign Jack Von Arx?”

Jack Von Arx: “If you’re looking for an edge, sign me right now. There are better players than me, but no one will outwork me. I’m extremely goal-oriented and not afraid to be coached. I’m very blessed to be gifted with size and athleticism and I’ve worked very hard to develop into a guy who can lead a team. I’m hungry to win and I’ve got so much to prove.”

Interviewer: “Well after hearing that, I don’t know how any team with an open roster spot could pass up the opportunity to put you in their sweater. Jack, I thank you and wish you the best of luck this season.”

Jack Von Arx: “I appreciate you guys giving me the opportunity to get my name out there.”
