SMJHL teams most needs before S53 draft - X2 MEDIA
#1
(This post was last modified: 03-11-2020, 03:30 AM by st4rface.)

Sunday, March 15th, 7:00 PM EDT time - this is the time which every SMJHL S53 draft prospect waits for. More than 50 draft prospects are ready to jump in professional hockey and can't wait for greatest moment of their careers till now - SMJHL draft. SMJHL teams need to be ready aswell, because they will give chance to a lot of new hockey players. They can get a player who makes history or make a bad move and get a bust. Draft is always unpredictable.

SMJHL have 10 teams entering S53 and all of them is going to search for some serious monsters on ice. Some of them need forwards, some of them need defenders or goalies, so this time I decided to make list of SMJHL teams most needs before up-coming S53 SMJHL draft. I hope, this will help a bit for a prospects aswell before the draft, so they can decide which is their favorite team to get drafted on. I know how hard it is to come in the league as a newcomer. We all needed some type of help with information before draft. Before you start to read, remember that few of these players who these teams have, can be called up to SHL and then these teams will have spot for these positions!

Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws Outlaws
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 27-17-6-60, 4th place, Four Star Cup Champions winning in finals versus St. Louis Scarecrows (4:1 in the series)
Team status: Title defenders
Team leaders: Ivan Maximus, Alex Petrenko and Bale
View on a team as a draft prospect: Previous champions, pretty decent roster, interesting logo and Hall Of Fame GM.
View on a team roster: Hard to start this type of analysis with a title defending team. They finished last regular season in 4th place, but we can't forget that 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, all had 61 points, while Outlaws had 60 points. In Play-Offs they proved that they are the best winning in finals series versus St. Louis Scarecrows (4:1 in series) and now they will defend their title. Checking their roster, we can see that they have elite 1st line already and decent second line, while 3rd and 4th line is just a regular 200 - 300 TPE type of line. They have two great defenders - Alex Petrenko (534 TPE) and Nicholas Owens (656 TPE). That means if they don't get called up to SHL, Outlaws really don't have spot for a new defender in 1st line. They got pretty decent goalie - Strom Chamberlain (451 TPE), but there is spot for a back-up goalie. They have decent right wing - Bale (380 TPE) and Rhys Pritchard (468 TPE). In center position, they have maybe even greatest available SMJHL center - Ivan Maximus (794 TPE) and decent back-up - C.T. Carragher (390 TPE).
Most needs: Priority for team would be to get a decent left wing forward, because they only have three left wingers and only of them is actually decent right now. Secondary option would be defender. As I said, they have already two amazing defenders, but getting third defender would help a lot them defensively. They have Alex Petrenko (534 TPE) and Nicholas Owens (656 TPE) as defenders and that's pretty much it. They have three more defenders but none of them have more than 195 TPE. I would say they will pick a left winger and then will go for a defender.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: No special player
Resume: If you are player who don't care about big ice time and want to be one of the top seeds, this team is for you. Most likely, you will not get drafted on this team if you are high quality draft prospect, but who knows. Team have 7 draft picks on up-coming S53 SMJHL draft. They have forfeited 1st round pick, they have 2nd round pick and after that - only 5th round pick and up. Most likely you will get drafted here if you are left winger or a defender.

Armada Anchorage Armada Armada
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 21-23-6-48, 9th place, lost in 1st round (wildcard) versus Newfoundland Bersekers (2:4 in the series)
Team status: Re-building
Team leaders: Mitchell van der Heijden (center), Ulrik Bergstrom (defender) and Stan Hanson (right wing forward)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Great team to land ice time wise for a player, but not title contenders before the draft.
View on a team roster: Last season, Anchorage Armada finished in 9th place. They lost in 1st round versus Newfoundland Bersekers 2:4 in series. This team definitely is re-building team. Team have a lot of room for new players. Team have only two right wing forwards, but they are pretty decent - Stan Hanson (440 TPE) and Jay Reeves (314 TPE). On left wing they have five players, but only one of them is decent right now - Ryan Cvitkovich (335 TPE). They have two decent defenders aswell - Ulrik Bergstrom (366 TPE) and Berry Blue (328 TPE). In center position they have nice 2nd line player - Cyril Vyskoč (307 TPE) and greatest player on this team - Mitchell van der Heijden (621 TPE). They have spot for back-up and I would say even primary goalie, cause they have only one goalkeeper and he have only 290 TPE.
Most needs: Priority for Armada would be to get a decent goalie who could try to be a new first goalie or at least good back-up. Important for them is to get defender aswell, cause they have two decent defenders, plus one normal, but no one who is much better player TPE wise. I would say they will go for a goalie and then for a defender, just because draft have only four goalies at this moment and much more defenders. They need left winger as well, to be honest, so they could shoot shot on some hyped up left wing forward aswell.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: One of the goalies, Tinke Jutila
Resume: This would be perfect spot to land for every prospect in my opinion. Technically, you can get even in 1st or 2nd line in your first SMJHL year on this team if you are hard working player. For a goalie this would be amazing chance as so does for a left winger. They have all their original picks - in each round 2nd pick. Big hopes for this franchise! Most likely you will get drafted here if you are a goalkeeper or a defender. After first few round picks - activity based picks in my opinion.

Kraken Carolina Kraken Kraken
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 29-18-3-61, 2nd place, lost in semi-finals versus Anaheim Outlaws (0:4 in the series)
Team status: Title contenders
Team leaders: Tom Fiddler (center), Michael Fitted (center) and Ricky Bobby (left wing forward)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Easy way to high place in next season, amazing team branding and logo, small chances to get decent ice time.
View on a team roster: If some of these players doesn't get a call up from SHL, then SMJHL is in a danger! Kraken is on a way to get that championship. They literally have no space in center position - they have four centers who are amazing for SMJHL TPE wise - Stirling MacTavish (425 TPE), Velveteen Dream (464 TPE), Michael Fitted (642 TPE) and Tom Fiddler (655 TPE). They have decent goalie and pretty cool back-up aswell. They have some room in defense, because they have only one decent defender right now - Zbigniew Pokrywka (365 TPE). All other defenders for them is pretty average. On left wing they have Ricky Bobby (595 TPE) and few average players. They have only one right wing forward on their roster - Jimmy Wagner (282 TPE), which means they they technically have spot on right wing, but to be honest - they have no space for new forwards. They can put some center in right or left wing and they basically have two full lines of unbeatable force.
Most needs: To be honest, Kraken right now have no needs if their roster stays the same. But, a decent defender would help them even more! They have already 6 defenders, but only two of them is 300+ TPE and other four is 200+ TPE. Which means, a new and hard working defender can earn his spot and get even 2nd line in his first year - maybe even 1st if luck is on your side.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: Mikkel Asmus Sondergard, Aumy Jr.??? Rolleyes
Resume: It will be hard to get drafted on this team. They have traded away their 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks and have 7 picks on this draft - from 4th round and higher. If you are hard working and hyped up player - small chance to land on Carolina. This team will not spend a lot of time checking draft prospects and drafting them. They have the juice and they don't need no more big players. They will go for some draft steal probably. Is it for long-term though? Who knows... Most likely you will get picked on this team if you are up-coming draft steal or a defender. After first few round picks - activity based picks in my opinion.

Raptors Colorado Raptors Raptors
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 27-16-7-61, 3rd place, lost in 2nd round versus St. Louis Scarecrows (2:4 in the series)
Team status: Title contenders
Team leaders: Henrik Lundqvist Jr. (center), Hariken Urawa (right wing forward) and Simothy Drunkebird (center)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Big chances if you are a forward, contenders and probably decent ice time aswell, not so ''catchy'' branding and logo.
View on a team roster: This team last season finished 2nd on regular season and lost in 2nd round, but roster wise, they ain't really that good. They have two great centers - Simothy Drunkebird (407 TPE) and Henrik Lundqvist Jr. (572 TPE). They have pretty good goalie - Samat Beibitzhanov (399 TPE) and decent back-up aswell. In defense they have two good players - Denver Wolfe (455 TPE) and Heat Siecker (309 TPE). They have four more defenders who ir a list 200 - 250 TPE. They have one good right wing forward - Hariken Urawa (422 TPE). They have pretty big problems in left wing forward position. They have three left wingers, but greatest of them doesn't have even 300 TPE yet.
Most needs: Raptors priority is to get a left wing forward - maybe even two! After that they could focus on right wing forward and some draft steals. Right winger and left winger can earn 2nd or even 1st line in this team already in his first SMJHL year.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: No special player
Resume: Raptors have pick for each round, except for a 2nd round. It will be hard to get drafted on this team if you are goalie, but most likely you will get drafted here if you are left wing forward or right wing forward. They will probably shoot their shot at some defenders on 4th round and more late aswell, so be ready! After first few round picks - activity based picks in my opinion.
Falcons Detroit Falcons Falcons
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 29-18-3-61, 1st place, lost in semi-finals versus St. Louis Scarecrows (2:4 in the series)
Team status: Title contenders
Team leaders: Guy O'Shea (defender), Cal Labovitch (right wing forward) and Luke McMaster (center)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Average team TPE wise with a lot of ''young blood'', interesting team branding and logo, long time existing team (team name and logo wise).
View on a team roster: Team went 1st place on last regular season and after that, lost versus St. Louis Scarecrows in semi-finals. I guess, they are upset about that and will enter new season with power to revenge their loss. Pretty average team, to be honest. A lot of players in a room between 200 and 300 TPE. Only one great right wing forward - Cal Labovitch (479 TPE). He is aswell greatest player of this team. On defense they have four decent defenders and one amazing defender - Guy O'Shea (359 TPE). They have two pretty average goalies who could both be a back-up, but they literally can't get in draft better goalie TPE wise. On center position they have Luke McMaster (338 TPE) and two other pretty decent centers aswell. On left wing they have nobody pretty big - two average players and one under 200 TPE forward. Pretty stacked team defensively!
Most needs: Falcons priority would be to get a decent left wing forward. I would say there is even spot for two left wingers. All other spots is kinda taken, so there will not be no secondary options. If you are left winger, you can earn 3rd or 2nd line in your 1st SMJHL year easily.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: Joseph Fantobens
Resume: Falcons have a pick for each round, except for 2nd round. They will probably go for a left wing forward on first picks and then try some luck on some draft steals, plus maybe centers, to get a decent 4th line center. Most likely you will get drafted here if you are left wing forward or a player which after few seasons will be called ''S53 SMJHL draft steal''. After first few round picks - activity based picks in my opinion.
Knights Kelowna Knights Knights
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 25-18-7-57, 7th place, lost in 2nd round versus Carolina Kraken (3:4 in the series)
Team status: Title contenders
Team leaders: Ryan Shepard (center), Andrey Barbashev II (left wing forward) and Adam Sciana (defender)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Team with some serious and good hockey players, definitely title contenders, not so big ice time probably, long time existing team (team name and logo wise).
View on a team roster: SMJHL is in a danger! Team have amazing defense - three players over 400 TPE (soon already 500 TPE) and one almost 400 TPE defender. Defensively they are stacked and need only some 3rd line defender. They have one great right wing forward - Kalevolaripaavo Käspertommevisnapuu (560 TPE) and three decent right wingers aswell. Talking about left wingers - Andrey Barbashev II (697 TPE) and Gylfi Eriksson (494 TPE). They have good goalie aswell - Cillian Kavanagh (388 TPE) and greatest center on SMJHL right now - Ryan Shepard (866 TPE). Probably, they will lose their greatest players cause they will be called up to SHL, but even after that, they have pretty decent roster and space for player only as a second goalie or 3rd line left wing or right wing forward. If Ryan Shepard will be called up - they will have space in center position.
Most needs: They don't have really any specific needs. They can shoot their shot at any player in my opinion. The only specific need is a back-up goalie and left/right wing forwards. Not big ice time for draftees though. Ryan Shepard will probably get called up, so after that, Knights definitely will need a center.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: No special player
Resume: Knights have two 1st round picks on upcoming draft, so it will be interesting to watch what they will do. They will probably go for a center and a left or right wing forward in first round and then go for a back-up goalie, continuing picking mostly forwards. After that - activity based picks in my opinion.

Timber Maine Timber Timber
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 18-27-5-41, 10th place, lost in 1st round (wildcard) versus Kelowna Knights (2:4 in the series)
Team status: Re-building
Team leaders: Al Kayhall (right wing forward), Abel Skinner (defender) and Thicc Cheezy (left wing forward)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Projected big ice time, underdogs, interesting and cool team branding and logo, just relocated team.
View on a team roster: This team have always been an underdogs! Luckily, my player was on it more that 20 seasons ago, when we got one of their Four Star Championship trophies. For now, they are definitely re-building. Last regular season they finished in last place with worst record in the entire league and now they will play under different name. Best player on a team - defender Abel Skinner (555 TPE). Two good right wing forwards - Al Kayhall (553 TPE) and Indigo Trevino (427 TPE) and one good left winger - Thicc Cheezy (469 TPE). Have a lot of spots in left wing, center and defense positions. Great primary goalkeeper, but definitely in searching for a back-up.
Most needs: This team need a lot. They have no decent center, so a center will be probably their first choice and need. Then they could try to get some left winger, cause they have only one good left winger and there is still chance that he could be called up to SHL. I would say, they will go for two centers with first picks and then after some left winger, continuing with defenders.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: No special player
Resume: Timber have 4 picks in first 2 rounds (three of them in 2nd round), total of 12 picks. They will probably go for at least two centers, after that for a right wing forward and then it's all based on players activity. Probably, team where a lot of new players wanna be and play. Big chances to grow and have a decent ice time. After first few round picks - activity based picks in my opinion.

Berserkers Newfoundland Berserkers Berserkers
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 24-21-5-53, 8th place, lost in 2nd round versus Detroit Falcons (0:4 in the series)
Team status: Re-building
Team leaders: Akira Ren (defender), Disisde Dayudie (defender) and Thomas Vanice (left wing forward)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Have great chances to get decent amount of ice time if have needed position and work attitude, interesting team branding and logo.
View on a team roster: To be honest, hard to say - is Berserkers a re-building team or title contenders. They had winning record last year and still ended regular season as a 8th seed. Plus, got swept in 2nd round by Detroit Falcons. They have some great assets. They have three pretty amazing defenders - Akira Ren (845 TPE), Disisde Dayudie (755 TPE) and Jakob Hamr (519 TPE). Normally, these type of players like Akira Ren and Disisde Dayudie get called up on SHL and if it will happen, Newfoundland team really have no defenders - only Jakob Hamr. They have two decent right wing forwards and one good left wing forward - Thomas Vanice (638 TPE). They have some trouble with both goalies - primary and secondary aswell. Their primary goalie is Steven Vassallo (287 TPE) and a back-up goalie doesn't even have 200 TPE yet. If Steven doesn't get some serious TPE, then Berserkers can finish again in a low seed. Team have three average centers, but none of them is really special. So I guess, they are really re-building not contenders.
Most needs: Team really need to get a decent center for next season and future. Back-up goalie would be need aswell and so does left wing forward.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: No special player
Resume: 13 draft picks combined, a lot of them in first 3 rounds. Team will probably go for at least one center in first rounds and left wing forwards. Could actually take some defenders if some of their greatest defenders will be picked up to SHL. After first few round picks - activity based picks in my opinion.

Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 26-19-5-57, 6th place, lost in the finals versus Anaheim Outlaws (1:4 in the series)
Team status: Title contenders
Team leaders: Aron Hernadivic (left wing forward), James Ronlain (right wing forward) and Elizabeth Doyle (a goalie)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Team where will be hard to get ice-time if greatest players will not be called up on SHL.
View on a team roster: This roster looks pretty dangerous aswell. No clue how this team finished regular season in 6th place, but at least we can understand why they was on the finals. They have James Ronlain (702 TPE) on right wing. Right wing is fully stacked with two more 400+ TPE players. On left wing they have Aron Hernadivic (802 TPE) and Ruslan Zaporozhets (546 TPE). They have spot only on 4th line on this team right now, to be honest. They have one good center - Danny Marston (387 TPE) and two decent centers aswell. Great goalie - Elizabeth Doyle (610 TPE) and one good defender - Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette. They have three pretty good defenders aswell, so pretty hard to earn spot on defense in this team. Probably, will have some space on left wing and right wing if this teams greatest players will be called up to SHL, which will probably happen.
Most needs: Team needs a center! Two centers under 400 TPE and one under 300TPE. Hard work can definitely earn 3rd line on line-up if you are a center. Defenders and left wing forwards will have some chance aswell. Maybe a back-up goalie or even primary goalie if Elizabeth Doyle will be called up to SHL.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: No special player
Resume: 13 draft picks comined aswell and three of them in 3rd round. Team will probably go for a center in first picks. After that, they will try to get a decent left wing forward and a decent center. After that - players activity based picks probably.

Whalers Vancouver Whalers Whalers
Last season record (W-L-OTL-PTS): 24-16-10-58, 5th place, lost in 2nd round versus Anaheim Outlaws (2:4 in the series)
Team status: Re-building
Team leaders: White Goodman (a goalie), Mikas Bieksa (defender) and François Breton (left wing forward)
View on a team as a draft prospect: Projected great amount of ice time, not so ''catchy'' team branding and logo, but great franchise.
View on a team roster: Big chances to get decent ice time, not so ''catchy'' team branding and logo, great franchise.
View on a team roster: This team is screwed if some of these big names will be called up to SHL. They really ain't that good and calling up one of these players will probably mean fighting for 8th seed. They have a great goalie - White Goodman (565 TPE). Two good defenders - Sven Yxskaft (468 TPE) and Mikas Bieksa (485 TPE). Two pretty decent left wing forwards and one good left wing forward aswell - François Breton (460 TPE). They have one decent center and some spots in right wing forward, center and defense positions. A lot of holes and hard work to put this team together, so they ain't last in last positions this season.
Most needs: Team definitely needs a defenders, centers and right wing forwards. Back-up goalie is needed aswell, but they can just pick up some secondary goalie from free agency aswell. Priority - centers, defenders and right wingers. Hard to decide which they need more, cause all is pretty needed.
Players they will focus on and try to draft: No special player
Resume: Whalers don't have 3rd round pick. They will probably go for one center and one defender in first rounds and then try to get some decent right wing forward. After that - players activity based picks probably and defenders, cause they have only four defenders on their rosters right now.

High hope upcoming draft prospects:
Joseph Fantobens - defender - 180 TPE - high amount of TPE, probably high pick
Mikkel Asmus Sondergard - defender - 200 TPE - most amount of TPE from all prospects, probably one of the first picks
Aumy Jr. - defender - 163 TPE - this is just to get a bit bigger ego, because I am a veteran to this league and doing a lot of stuff to earn money and TPE, plus don't wanna be a late pick again, haha  Laughing
William Lockwood - defender - 158 TPE - young guy still trying to find ways to earn TPE and have struggle with it, but he is active, working hard and definitely worth high pick
Tinke Jutila - defender - 175 TPE - active guy, hard working, earning TPE a lot, probably high pick
To be honest, hard to predict who will be good, who have good hopes and who will be a bust, because a lot of these people are newcomers to this league and only time will show how all will go.

As a veteran of SHL, I can only tell draft prospects to not worry about draft. It's cool to be picked in first or second round, or even as a 1st pick overall, but that's not the priority. I am here since S27 and my player was drafted on SMJHL drafts 6th round ending. In SHL draft he was late 2nd round pick, but at the end of his career, he spent 13 seasons in SHL, playing almost 1000 games combined on SHL official games. SMJHL champion, SHL final appearance aswell, gold and two silver medals on IIHF aswell. What more do you need? It's all based on how hard you work and how you earn TPE. Go hard, go for max and you will earn your spot. Don't be worried about team who will draft you! If you will work hard - GM will see it and give you ice time. If it will be not possible, then he will trade you away or you can always ask by yourself for a trade to different team. Focus on TPE and making your player better, not which SMJHL will draft you. This is just a little preview of what each team really needs before big Sunday! Work hard and you will be recognized!

I was helping Halifax Raiders GM back then and if I remember right, for Blizzard or Dragons aswell. It's more important what type of human being you are and how hard you work to get that ice time. So - better do how good you can, put in time, work hard and you will get recognition and ice time. No worries about other! Few seasons in SMJHL and you are SHL future if you are doing same things what you need to do! By the way, big thanks to vbottas17 and Blizzards plus Dragons franchises. Vbottas is basically greatest dude I've ever met here. Don't know if he is still here, but he was such a friendly dude and so nice to me always no matter what. Blizzards and Dragons gave me a chance to prove myself and both teams was amazing. Thank you! Now I am back and maybe as your rival or maybe as your teammate again. Who knows? Time will show!

Of course, what would be this media without self advertisement, right? Because, defender Aumy Jr. from Finland is S53 SMJHL draft prospect aswell! Just wanna say that I was here when Halifax Raiders had that first Four Star Cup trophy and I am back here - now as a adult, got some knowledge in this league, how it all works and ready to do some crazy stuff on this league as I did with previous player. My player is Aumy Jr., he is 6'3'' and 210 lbs. He is defender and created like Alex Pietrangelo. Searching for nice and long-term home. Previous player was loyal aswell - three and half seasons on the same SMJHL team (Halifax Raiders) and seven seasons on the same SHL team (Edmonton Blizzard). Ready to work, ready to help others and just wanna some nice ice time to prove that this player is gonna be a Hall of Famer one day! Spent 13 seasons here before this player and now I'm here - to make some amazing history and help team to win championship!

Great first article!

Vancouver is definitely in a lot more dire straits than is written in this analysis - Mikas Bieksa has aged out (there is a five-season limit in the SMJHL, so anyone with a S49 in their name cannot come back next season) and Goodman has decamped for the SHL. We need a new starting goalie and depth at every position. Also, FA goalies don’t grow on trees. If a player is active enough to be a viable option, they’re almost certainly on a roster already.

Was here from S27-S42. Did a lot of media back then! Just a new player and my second media with this player! More just so prospects see what is going on and GMs can comment here what they need and how are they looking at players. Prospects have small amount of knowledge before upcoming draft and I hope this will help a bit. Thanks for giving me props! Who knows on which team I will end up, right?

Great article, except Anaheim already has an AMAZING backup who can hold his own as a starter with Separa Borro
