S52 Nominations - McBride & Uppercut
#1

Today's nominations are the John McBride award for best Goaltender in the league, and the Lance Uppercut award for Best General Managers of the league.

You can find previous editions of the S52 nominations here: First / Second

John McBride Award

John McBride Award for Goaltending, is let’s face it probably the most important award short of the MVP set, who else on a team stands apart and often alone, oft blamed for the defeats, but also singled out in victory. It takes a player with grit in their teeth and sawdust in their eyes to truly excel in front of the net. Here are our honoured heroes this season:

Peter Larson of the Manhattan Rage @Tomasnz  Rage

Leading the league in save% and shutouts, Peter also had an impressive array of advanced statistical metrics. He played 43 games for the Rage and won 24(4th)

Tibuk Soonika of the Chicago Syndicate @chetib  syndicate

Tibuk’s season is probably best categorised at one of the most complete all round goalie performances the league has seen. With an excellent save% and Goals Against, with high shots faced, he managed an impressive 26 wins on 44 starts, to put Chicago into the playoffs earning a first round bye.

Chris Partridge of the San Francisco Pride @Mackkz  pride

Chris lead the league in goals against per game with an impressive 2.45, as well as having a great save percentage and other all around stats. His 23 wins came from only 37 starts which gave him one of the highest win percentages in the league.

Those are our John McBride nominees for the 52nd seasons of the SHL, congratulations to the nominees, and now lets go up to the studio to hear what the reaction is.

’Analysis Desk’ Wrote:Larson was impressive this season to say the very least. He managed a .921 save percentage, while having a 2.66 GAA and 5 shutouts when the next best had hit only 2. He was absolutely dominant for a stretch in the season, but could be hindered by having had a weaker beginning and end, but will be helped by a fantastic stretch through the middle of the season where he was absolutely dominant beyond any other.

Looking at the season Soonika had, he was third in save percentage and fourth in GAA. He faced the fourth most shots while managing to have the second most wins. He helped bring a good Chicago team into the greatness level, dominating at times during the season and driving them to a playoff spot as one of the best teams in the league thanks in part to his play. He has proven to be a major contender for the McBride for his overall play and consistency.

While there are concerns on the games played, Partridge was stellar in his more limited games played. Second in the league in save percentage and first in GAA with an incredible 2.45. He was a major factor in helping guide the President's Trophy winning Pride to the highest spot in the standings, and while he didn't have as many outright dominant games as the others, he had the consistency to maintain a steady hand and drive the Pride to a high playoff berth.

Lance Uppercut Award

The Lance Uppercut award for best general management of an SHL team looks across a number of success factors for a franchise. It brings together assessments on team building, both in season and the recent past, and how that team building translates into on ice success. This year sees three managers of play-off teams, including both the Presidents trophy and Challenge Cup winning managers.

Los Angeles Panthers @Wasty & @JT3 Panthers
A team that made the moves they needed to push on really compete for a cup during the offseason, the team will no doubt be disappointed in the final results, they still managed to produce a high performing squad that lead them to the play-offs.

San Francisco Pride @Grapehead & @DaftRaincloud pride
The presidents trophy winning managers who have built probably the greatest defensive team in the league, making moves in the offseason to secure that for S52 and beyond, while also boosting their offensive capabilities as well.

Manhattan Rage @JayWhy & @'luketd' Rage
A group that has been a fixture for these awards in recent years, having overseen the complete rebuild of the Rage during the 40s, and having that repay their fans in S52 with their first cup since S38. They have continued to make moves in both free agency and via trading to see how long they can keep this window they have created open.

Those are our nominees for the Lance uppercut Award, congratulations to all of them! and again, lets go upstairs and see what the studio thinks..

’Analysis Desk’ Wrote:Wastlund has his 8th nomination here, making him the second most nominated general manager in SHL history. He also accrues a major record here in being the only general manager to have a nomination in four decades. This does break a streak for him from being nominated in S21, S31 and S41, however his nomination here is well earned as he made moves to receive Mikhail Lokitonov while moving out Bobby Watson. While they had a rough patch midseason, the team was always a strong contender in the West and showed the moves ultimately paid off with a playoff berth.

Kirkstone gets his fourth nomination here, tying him within the top 10 all time for nominations. He's on an interesting trend with a nomination every two seasons. He moved a first round pick for Piotr Czerkawski this past off-season, while also moving a former high pick of his in Luca Veccelli for Tokek Takshak. Those moves ultimately paid dividends as Takshak gave them steady play on the third pair and Czerkawski was their 6th best player in scoring with 40 points. It was prudent, but well made and proves why he deserves this spot.

Aittokallio receives his sixth nomination, tying him with his mentor Cole Reinhart for fourth most all-time, and tying him with close friend Jasper Clayton for the most nominations in a seven season span with 5. The Rage have been aggressive in free agency, adding Austin Roenick this season. They also traded to add Anastasia O'Koivu from Tampa Bay and Luca Veccelli from San Francisco to bolster their team even further. Bringing up Derek Bohne Jr who they picked up in RFA in a sign and trade and Phineas Gold, the team bolstered three rookies, but managed to win their division again for the second straight season.

That's all from the awards committee today stay tuned tomorrow for more announcements.

That I actually did not know, would my S17 win cruelly mean I’ve been nominated in 5 decades? thanks for the Nomination and good luck to SF and MAN!

Yes actually, my bad I scrolled past it and missed it on my count. I am disappointed you didn't get a nom last season to continue that S_1 streak though.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

I get wanting your guy to get a nod, but Carpet being 5th in SV% and 10th in GAA probably is why he didn't get one. Also considering he was only top 2 in one stat, and that was a 6 way tie for second, it shouldn't be too surprising

I'm okay with it. I'd rather win in a season where the whole team is doing well. GAA will be a problem for a while.

ML should hopefully get the team around you that deserve. Going to be a great goalie. Always root for Harry Carpet
