S53 PT #3 - Build A Front Office

(This post was last modified: 04-06-2020, 07:25 AM by nour.)

Negotiator: If I have to pick one SHL user who is just a phenomenal negotiator I’m gonna be picking @Gooney because every time he tells me about a weird fetish he has he’s able to negotiate his normalcy back into my vision. I think this would translate to the SHL and he’s also a past coGM so he has the skill set but yeah if anyone’s gonna look someone in the soul and convince them its Gooney

Strategist: The best strategist I know is probably gonna be @dmills3 because of the crazy amount of success he’s been able to find with Vancouver, they’ve been constantly rebuilding since he took over as their head GM and honestly the longer the rebuild the more big prospects you can gather so thats a testament to why dmills has made Vancouver suck so bad and why it makes him a good strategist for it

Scout: When it comes to scouting I’m gonna have to pick @Samee who was renowned when he was Seattle GM to draft a lot of Kelowna Knights players who went inactive in a season. You may say, how is this a good GM, where is his value. But that’s the thing, KNOWING samee is a bad talent evaluator means I can play to his strengths. Oh samee thinks this guy is a 5 star prospect? Okay now I know this man is an absolute bust who will cap at 300 tpe, easy. Just like a bad critic can let you know every album they think is bad might actually be good, samee can help me steer clear of dogshit prospects by way of me ignoring his every word.

Clubhouse Leader: Honestly I needed a man like @Ferda here because he gives a shit about the boys and thats what matters once the squad is assembled by my elite team I need someone who can create an environment my players wanna play and Ferda is a really good kisser and gives insane head hugs so he’ll be able to foster a loving environment for the guys to be in.

Negotiator: I would probably go with my future teammate @FuzzSHL on this. Dude seems like he could be a great agent and could get you a sick-ass deal on your contract (much like I did when I got paid $8 million for 3 years, that was sick)

Scout: @Budgie does a great job of scouting for the Armada and he really pays attention to both the SMJHL and SHL rookie classes so I would put him down as a possible scout.

Strategist: I've got a tough one here, as both @frithjofr and @golden_apricot both do great jobs of running strats for New Orleans and Anchorage respectively, but I'd go for GA on this one. He's been able to get the best out of an Anchorage team supposed to be middle of the pack with his strats.

Clubhouse Leader: I'll go for @Blastmeaway. Dude's able to drive discussion in a New Orleans locker room where some don't feel like talking (for undisclosed reasons that I won't get in to). Just a chill dude who expects the best out of his teammates.

My strategist would be my man hotdog. He spent an absurd amount of time testing things out back in the STHS days while I was with the Wolfpack, and despite our lack of success while he was in charge it was not due to a lack of trying. He also did his best to assist with builds and the like.

My scout would be my former SMJHL GM InciteHysteria. IH wasn't perfect and he has since gone inactive I believe, but he put together an amazing Colorado Mammoths team during my time there thanks to excellent scouting and drafting. We had several capped players from just my draft class, and though most went on to not stay active at the SHL level, that didn't matter at the time and I have to give a lot of credit to IH anyways.

I would also petition for the role of "branding specialist" to be added to the list. Having someone on the team (or not) that can help the team represent themselves well to others is a key part of the front office in my opinion.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the front-office staff announcement for the Federation of Sulfurgold's inaugural IIHF team. Our players are ultimately unimportant-- I know that what you really want is a detailed list of our staffing choices, so let's get right into it.

The FOS Negotiator: @dankoa - This guy really raked me over the coals for my first SHL contract. It was a tough negotiation, but ultimately we settled on a three-figure sum. He's not an easy guy to get into it with, but I'm pleased with how I held my own. I can tell that, deep down, he cares about his players at least a little bit. That's the buried heart of gold I'm looking for in a negotiator.

The FOS Strategist: @"reid_sutherland" - Reid is my center, and he's always screaming at me to get into better position. One time he shot the puck at me. I hope that he can bring this fire to the Federation of Sulfurgold.

The FOS Scout: @Mediocre_Fred - Fred is an honest guy and he's always taking me aside to tell me about which players he likes and which players he hates. Usually he's saying that we have a really tight-knit group aside from me, Burlok. He thinks that all I talk about is the IIHF team I'm building and my potato farm. Anyway he seems like a good judge of character, and I think he'd fit well as a scout.

The FOS Clubhouse Leader: @notorioustig - Tig is deeply competent and everything he does succeeds. A good team leader needs to be someone that is always right and has never made a bad decision in their life. It doesn't hurt that he's handsome. There, I wrote exactly what you told me to. You owe me at least ten seconds of powerplay time in the next game! No? Alright.

When assembling my front office, I would have to make several difficult choices. Ultimately, I settled on this.

The negotiator would be dankoa, I'm currently engaging in trade negotiations with his team in the NSFL, and oh boy he can be a tough sell. I would want him to be able to get the most out of any trades we may make.

The strategist would be BDonini, who knows a ton about the sim engine and how to create optimal builds. I would want him guiding the players and testing strats.

The scout would be yours truly, RainDelay. I pride myself on my scouting abilities in the NSFL, helping pick up a steal as late as the 271st pick in the latest draft. If need be, I could easily translate those abilities to the SHL!

Finally, the clubhouse leader would be Bojo. He was a clubhouse leader during my initial run in the SHL, and he is such a likable guy that teammates would want to rally around!

I could take the easy way out and just throw my GM @ml002 into all of these positions here, because I seriously wouldn't know which of the four would be the most suitable for him.

However, I'm going to pick a position for myself and one that isn't mentioned. A role that I already play for several seasons now: the advisory role. It's more of a quiet position in the background, but it combines a lot of tasks of the other four positions, perhaps more of the scout and clubhouse leader than the other two, because as a team advisor you don't actively sign players and you don't really coach much either. After my SMJHL career was over I felt that I needed to stick around with my old team and be more than just another silent member of the alumni group. As a team advisor you don't really have to do anything, but you can give your opinion to the GMs when you feel like it or when they ask for it. I've helped (then) Lethbridge and (now) Newfoundland with scouting before and thanks to that we got some good players onboard and I still try to be very active in the team's LR and help the rookies. It's the perfect position for anyone of a team's alumni group who doesn't want to be a GM for whatever reason. Somehow the GMs listen to me (greetings to @JNH / @SDCore and also to my fellow advisor @KlusteR here).

I will ignore WKP for this task to make it more fun for myself

Negotiator – @JKortesi81 without a doubt. When Joe wants something or someone, he will chase you to the ends of the earth. ‘There is a price for everything’ is his motto. And back in the SMJHL he had me wondering if I had taken the right decision by refusing his trade once.

Strategist – @Tomen is my choice. He’s someone that will take the time to simulate as many permutations as possible to give his team the best odds on a regular basis.

Scout – @luketd and his large swath of analytics and tables and whatnots would be my preferred choice here. He knows what to look for, both build wise, stat wise and people wise. The only knock on him is his silly avatar and that he’s a dirty Whaler.

Leader – Someone I haven’t had too much interaction with but that is respected on the site. I would go with @Wasty as he seems to always be in control of his locker room and people enjoy being on LAP.

Quote:A negotiator - this person should be able to attract free agents, make good trades, and re-sign existing players. This person is responsible for assembling the best possible roster and balancing the organization's budget. (other names: the CFO, the master baiter)

As a member of the mediocre Buffalo Stampede organization, I get to see how not to negotiate almost every day, thanks to the constant activity of head GM @WannabeFinn in the locker room. WBF is a questionable decision maker, often getting lucky in trades that make him appear better at his job than he actually is. The best negotiator is a user by the name of DACO, who's ability to interact and recruit free agents, especially Stampede free agents, is unmatched. Furthermore, DACO has never had a campaign against him urging him to step down, as Lee has. The amount of public outcry and outrage from WBFs own players such as Trautner, ZombieWolf, and others is hugely revealing into how Buffalo thinks about their leadership group in place. With DACO in charge, you can guarantee that this outrage would not be occurring, as he knows exactly how to attract free agents in a professional way. In the end, DACO is vastly superior to WBF, and would be my top choice for the negotiator role in my future front office. (179 words)

Here is my all time front office in the SHL based off the roles given:

A clubhouse leader: This one’s easy for me. In my time in the SHL there’s never been a GM who I’ve seen work a cult of personality like Deener did with the Renegades. Everyone on the team practically worshipped him, he was a phenomenal leader for the team and exactly what you’d want in terms of a face in the front office whom people would be drawn to.

A scout: I think I’d choose WannabeFinn. He’s done a tremendous job of drafting with Buffalo, having a bust rate far below the league average with his picks. Someone who’d do a great job of picking the best talent, he’s in the front office,

A strategist: Of all the people I’ve worked on lines with, there’s never been anyone able to make something out of nothing quite like JumpierPegasus. He did a phenomenal job of working in STHS and making underpowered rosters play far beyond their level - he’s my pick for strategist.
