Moderators Moderator Newfoundland Berserkers VS St. Louis Scarecrow Game Link: https://simulationhockey.com/games/smjhl...l_0_24.txt It has been a wild start to the SMJHL regular season with teams vying for early season points in the standings to solidify themselves as championship contenders. The Berserkers and Scarecrows had three points separating the two teams coming into this game. Both teams are pretty big eastern conference rivals and are really evenly matched skill wise so you know it was going to be a good game. Right out of the gate Newfoundland got on the board in the first five minutes of the game with a nice goal by top pairing defenseman Jukka Timonen. The Scarecrows had an answer of their own with two straight goals from Kriss Darzins and William Lockwood in the second and really dominated play in that period. However in the dying minute of the second period the Berserkers were able to capitalize on the man advantage as Niccolo Livius scored the game tying goal. That last minute goal in the second was really the turning point of the game as the Berserkers regained the momentum and took it into the third period following up with the game winning goal by Guy Legrande on the power play. The Berserkers really swarmed the Scarecrow’s shift after shift in the third and forced St. Louis to take a bunch of penalties. With four minor penalties in the third, the Scarecrows were practically in the box for half of the period which allowed the Berserkers to continuing holding all the momentum and spending a lot of time in the offensive zone. Final Score: 3-2 Berserkers
Three Stars of the game:
1. Jukka Timonen- 1 goal, 29:09 ice time 2. Mega Tron- 1 assist, 1 hit, 3 takeaways 3. Lucifer Morningstar-1 assist, 1 takeaway Looking at the player stats Jukka really took over this game being a horse on the blue line playing almost half of the entire game and led all players in ice time. He also got a goal and generated a lot of scoring chances and really drove the play from the backend. Overall, Newfoundland came into this game at 5-1 riding a hot streak to start the season and after a back and forth first two periods they took over the game in the third to seal a close 3-2 win. The biggest key to success for the Newfoundland Berserkers was their execution on special teams that night. Their penalty kill was absolutely perfect fending off any goals during the five times they were shorthanded while also capitalizing on the power play with two of their three goals coming with the man advantage. The Scarecrow’s were able to play a physically intimidating game and almost out doubled the Berserkers' hit total but their lack of discipline got them into penalty trouble which ultimately cost them the game. Both of these teams will see a lot of each other this season and should be battling it out near the top of the eastern conference so I would expect for there to be a lot more hard fought close games between these rivals.

The real powerplay
Hockey is a game which is often won and decided by the players not on the ice and by this I mean looking at who have got themselves in trouble and sitting in the penalty box. Looking back at this game, the Berserkers were clearly the better team in killing the powerplay and capitalizing on their own. Two of their three goals were when they had the man advantage, with Livius and LeGrande on the right end of them. On the other side, the Berserkers accumulated 6 minor penalties but made sure the Scarecrows were not able to score on any of them. So work on those special teams, they really have an effect! Momentum This was a tale of teams with different types of momentum and energy coming into the game. The Newfoundland Berserkers were definitely riding high on momentum with a 5-1 record, while the St. Louis Scarecrows were in a small slump and a 3-2-1 record. The Berserkers showed their true energy and momentum and were able to be the team doing the damage in the final period and sealing their 3-2 win. Each game in the season is a tough battle and sometimes all that matters is who has the energy and drive to go all the way to the final whistle and in this game it was Newfoundland. Everything was still in play in the final period, and the Berserkers made it count. The Story of Jukka In every game there is always one player who sticks out and who makes a difference. Thankfully in this game it was also recognized by the voters and Jukka Timonen was voted the first star of the game. Timonen made a difference everywhere he went on the ice. He was able to score the first goal of the game and the only even strength goal for Newfoundland. He also had a positive plus and minus rating, which is good for a defenseman when they shipped two goals. Also the mad man recorded over 30 minutes of ice time, which I think should be illegal. He was literally everywhere on the ice and really at all times. Timonen will hope to carry some of the load for the Berserkers going forward.

Discipline the main story
SMJHL teams have often tried to find ways to make their teams more disciplined. The young players often find themselves in the penalty box more than what you'd see at the SHL level. Unfortunately for St. Louis, this ended up costing them the game. In a close 3-2 result, Newfoundland found the back of the net twice on the powerplay. In total, the Scarecrows were called on nine minor penalties. Flash Gordon was called twice in the same period. If the Scarecrows want to show that they are one of the best teams in the league then they will certainly figure out how to stay out of the box. Bottom Six Support Part of the reason that Newfoundland has found such early success in the season is because they have been able to count on all of their players to contribute to the scoring sheet. With limited playing time, Newfoundland found their second powerplay group leading to the win tonight. With a big equalizer from Niccolo Livius and the eventual game winner from Guy LeGrande, Newfoundland clearly have something going here. Both of these players score their first of the season in this game and will be looking to continue this success going forward. Look for Newfoundland to maybe give more time to their first-year players with the recent spark in offense. In Juke We Trust Newfoundland's Jukka Timonen finds himself as the first star in the this game, which is not the first time this season. Jukka's third goal of the season got the scoring opened tonight. His third tally comes in just six games which is an incredible pace for the sophomore defneseman. Newfoundland's defensive corp is mostly made up of rookie goalies and as such, Timonen finds himself acting as a leader for this group. The Berserkers have been very fortunate being able to count on Jukka this much so far this season and the reliable play on both ends of the ice tonight is why the alternate captain finds himself with the first star honours. Timonen
Timonen was good this game. He played almost half of the game with almost 30 minutes long play time and he got 1 beautiful goal and first star title. He was very impactful this game and maybe his performance was the key for Newfoundland Berserkers victory over St. Louis Scarecrows. It is really shocking because of how late Jukka was drafted on SMJHL draft. He was really a draft steal and he is future legend without even talking. Future for this finlandish hockey player is crazy and hopefully he will continue to perform unpredictedly good. His performance was something else on this game

First Star
RD Jukka Timonen - The first star was awarded to Jukka Timonen after an outstanding performance which saw him score the first goal of the game near the fifteen minute mark, this appeared to get under the skin of the Scarecrows as they were a player down on the ice most of the rest of the period after a series of penalties. Timonen also had a solid defensive game leading to a positive +/- and spending an incredible 29 minutes on the ice over the course of the game. Timonen's performance really helped to kick start the Berserkers offense and he is a major part of why his team came away with a win in this one. Second Star RW Mega Tron - In this game we saw the second star go to the Right Wing out of St. Louis, Mega Tron - while he didn't have a goal of his own in the game, Tron was still able to earn himself a point on a clean assist early in the second period. Though this wasn't enough to keep the Scarecrows in the game, Mega Tron can't be held too responsible for this loss with his impressive performance on the ice. One has to wonder what other collapse in the St. Louis side lead to the convincing defeat, or whether perhaps Newfoundland were simply the better team on the day. Third Star C Lucifer Morningstar - Earning the third and final star of the game, Lucifer Morningstar is another name that didn't show up in the goals column of the scoresheet but still earned a point from a slick assist on Timonen's early goal, and was a major impact player in other areas. Morningstar had a good amount of faceoff wins, and was a key to the Berserkers maintaining posession throughout the game - goals aren't everything on an individual's statsheet and Morningstar was out to prove that in this game. Helping his team come away with a big win against a deflated St. Louis side helps him on his way to earning these accolades in the game. An integral faceoff-winner and assistant to Timonen's first goal in the first period, Morningstar was key in maintaining possession and setting up plays from deep within Newfoundland's defensive zone. |
