Back at this again with grading logos. I really liked to hear different peoples opinions on logos as I saw a couple posts since my last ranking. And so, I’ve done the SMJHL logos and thought I’d move on to the SHL. Again to preface, I’m not a professional at design nor do I think I can do better in creating these logos. Also, I’m slightly colourblind… so this is going to be an interesting look at each team’s primary logos. I’ll rate them out of 10 and give my commentary on them, so let’s begin!

Calgary Dragons: 4/10
Not off to a great start as the Calgary Dragons logo covers a lot of bases that I don’t like personally. The logo contains the team’s name in it and the words “Calgary” are really hard to read. The logo also has a triangular outline which I believe is not needed and doesn’t add to the design. Lastly, the design is really intricate and has excessive amounts of detail in my opinion, not passing the kid drawing test. As for positives, the colour contrast is good and, if simplified, can be a really good design. I’d start with removing everything except for the dragon head and maybe simplifying the design. I’d also like to see more white to the head for better contrast.

Edmonton Blizzard: 8.5/10
Although the logo contains the team’s name, the rest of it is really clean. The colours go together well and the design is rather simple. Not much to say about this one except for removing the text like in their secondary logo. Although, once the text is removed the logo does look rather empty in the bottom right corner so maybe extending the fur a bit there could help with that.

Los Angeles Panthers: 5/10
This logo has its positives and its negatives. At first glance, I like the simplicity of the logo and the colour, although a little dull, do contrast well. However, once I remove the portions that I believe the logo can do without such as the text and the circular outline, we are left with a rather plain design. The panther itself is one solid colour and definitely does not stand out. The sun in the background is also one solid color which doesn’t help either. Personally, if we remove the text and the border I’d say the design is just passable but I’d like more colours, shading, and outlines. Most importantly, I want the panther to stand out since it is supposed to represent the team.

Minnesota Chiefs: 9.5/10
Although the logo may not be the simplest, it is definitely more eye catching. The logo does a great job with its use of colours and not adding too much unnecessary detail to it. Overall, it is a really solid logo and is very appealing. I give it a 9.5 because I believe there’s always room for improvement even if it’s minor like a change to the shade of the green headband since it is a little faded.

New Orleans Specters: 7/10
Being ultimately two colours, the New Orleans Specters’ logo is pretty good. Likes always, I’d remove the text and in this case the fleur-de-lis behind it. Once those portions are removed I actually really dig the logo and believe it can be a main logo. The contrast between the colours really helps it stand out and the simplicity of the design makes it really good.

San Francisco Pride: 6.5/10
I’ll be rather blunt with this one, I’m not a fan of the look of the design. The lion’s eyes makes it seem like it’s staring into my soul and the colours are really dull even though they contrast. The logo checks off my boxes with regards to no text and no random border but I just can’t score it any higher. Maybe they can simplify the lion’s face and add more white highlights. Overall, I like the concept, just don’t like this outcome but it may be a personal thing.

Texas Renegades: 7/10
This design hits a lot of similar notes to the Specters’ logo. The logo can do without the text and the extra portions such as the hockey sticks in the back. Once removed, I think the logo is very solid, especially since it only uses two colours predominantly. I’d also like to see how the logo would look without two tone shading to see how that would look.

Winnipeg Jets: 6/10
Again this is probably my personal feelings taking over but I really like the colours and the text really fits the design. Plus, the circular border doesn’t look out of place and complements the logo nicely. However, being objective, the logo doesn’t scream jets as the logo seems to focus on the city of Winnipeg. The text, although nice, seems a little odd and the “Winnipeg” is not clear. Just a lot of components to this logo that I personally feel can be changed to focus more on jets considering they are the Winnipeg Jets. I still really like the current logo though.

Again, these are solely my own personal opinions and I’m not intending to be mean towards the people that designed them. If there is anything I overlooked feel free to let me know as it seems like there are a lot of subtle nuances and history behind each and every logo. Also I’ll probably end this “series” by ranking the remaining logos.

I don’t understand the immense dislike for having the teams name in the logo as well any form of shape to capture the whole logo. Not every logo needs to be just a figure and call it a day.

But I am happy to see more interest in the leagues brands.
