Comparing SMJHL Draft Vs SHL Draft
#1

Was curious to know if the drafting trend from juniors transpired into the same or almost the same order as it did in the SHL draft.  Not sure how this article will work out as I am doing this on the fly and without any P.O.D.C.  For those wondering what a P.O.D.C. stands for, its (Plan-Organize-Direct-Control).  Will begin with the S52 SMJHL and of coarse the S53 SHL entry draft and subsequently go to past years beyond.  Also I will only be comparing the top 16 draft picks, that is the first round of the SHL.

For the following exercises that I will conclude, I will only mention those prospects who we do not see on both top 16 ranks.  As the ones that are on both charts can very well be seen what kind of drop or rise they had.

The highly touted number one pick in the SMJHL currently has 269 TPE and dropped considerably down the charts in the SHL draft to 43rd overall by the Buffalo Stampede.  His last update which he did, was sadly 02/24/2020.  Enough of the dead wood, lets take a look at other spectacular jumps made from rookies who were discrete in there introduction to the league but made huge advancement in the year following up to the draft.

Couple Kelowna boys jump up the ranks a few spots, Ethan Duncan was pegged 46th overall in the SMJHL draft, nose to the grindstone he climbed the ranks and was drafted in the first round at 6th overall. Thats a whopping 40 ranks!  Jaska Seppala is another who made some stride by improving 16 spots to fall 7th overall.

As I look through, there are many exceptions here, too many to go through them all.  Let me name a few real quick and move on t another draft year.  Jack Kanoff was drafted 18th in the SMJHL and we see him here improve 10 spots to fall to 8th overall.  How about Minamino, was selected in the 6th round SMJHL, thats 56th overall and shot up the charts in one single season to 11th overall to improve his ranking by 45 ranks!  Quite the impression right there!

Closing out the 1st round we have Sutherland who went from 24th SMJHL to 14th in the SHL with the Jets, Sven Svenson 34th in Colorado to 15th with the Pride and lastly William Hartman who we see dropped 11 spots in the SHL.

S51 SMJHL DRAFT                                                         S52 SHL DRAFT
  1. Whalers  Sabo Tage                                                    1.  pride  Simothy Drunkebird
  2. Kraken  Velveteen Dream                                         2.  Chiefs  Cal Labovitch
  3. Knights  Morgan Forestier                                         3.  Renegades  Adam Scianna
  4. Scarecrows  Blake Faux                                                  4.  Stars  Rhys Pritchard
  5. Lions  Slatt Potts                                                    5.  Wolfpack  Sven Yxskaft
  6. Knights  Noah Nystrom                                             6.  Platoon  Slatt Potts
  7. raiders  Olli Saarinen Jr.                                           7.  Jets  Strom Chamberlain
  8. Armada  Ulrik Bergstrom                                           8.  Barracuda  Ulrik Bergstrom
  9. Raptors  Simothy Drunkebird                                    9.  Chiefs  Danny Marston
  10. Lions  Riley Kuse                                                  10.  Dragons  Trey Nets
  11. Whalers  Nicholas Corrigan                                       11.  Specters  Olli Saarinen Jr.
  12. Knights  Adam Scianna                                             12.  Renegades  Noah Nystrom
  13. Scarecrows  Danny Marston                                           13.  Chiefs  Jmac NCheese
  14. Whalers  Sven Yxskaft                                               14.  Rage  Samat Beibitzhanov
  15. Falcons  Jmac NCheese                                             15.  Blizzard  Luke McMasters
  16. Knights  Oscar Cordero                                             16.  Steelhawks  Mega Tron
At a glance we see about 4 or 5 top picks in the SMJHL not make it to the 1st round in the SHL.  But lets focus on those who did make it there as they are most likely the ones still around the forums.

Not making the cut for the top 16 prospects but who have made it in the SHL, Labovitch was selected 25th overall by detroit in the SMJHL and now sits comfortably in 2nd.  An improvement of 23 prospect spots.

Making a smaller jump but a jump just the same is the 4th SHL overall pick Pritchard who betters his outcome by 13 spots and lands with Toronto to kick off his career.  One making a more significant splash was G- Strom Chamberlain moving from 34th overall in the SMJHL to Winnipeg at 7th overall.  Jumping 27 ranks and becomes first goalie selected in this draft.

Jumping 16 spots and catching the Dragons scouting team is Trey Nets at 10th overall.  Do not think this was much a surprise, the 2nd goalie selected and improves their ranking by 6 to finish up at 14th overall with the Rage is Samat Beibitzhanov.

Detroit prospect Luke McMasters goes from 21st in the SMJHL to 15th SHL.  And lastly Mega Tron, one of the best names on the site also improves from 23rd to 16th in the SHL.

Well this is proving to be a lot more boring than I anticipated as well as much less meaningful than I thought.  Hopefully it has amused or occupied a few of you or at least 1 person other than myself or the guy who will be grading this.  Flat line......................

Yeah, you went from being even to odd  Smile
It is nice to see some guys make huge leaps from SMJHL 3rd round jump to 1st SHL.  Also on the opposite end, seeing the 1st overall drop off completely to IA
