Outlaws ROUND TWO  Knights

Welcome to round  two of the S53 SMJHL playoffs recap between the Anaheim Outlaws and the Kelowna Knights.  The Outlaws first round series against the Armada went the distance and pulled a 4-3 series win, while the Knights took care of business the way they know how and swept their rivals the Raptors in four games.

Game One

Opening the series at home the Kelowna Knights take advantage of the situation in front of a crowd of just over 5,600 fans.  The Knights did give up the first goal of this game almost half way through the first period, but that was all that the Outlaws would muster up on this night.  A measly 18 shots on goal taken against Kelowna's 32 was only the beginning of the dominance put on by the Knights.  Hitting back with 4 unanswered goals o their own to take the hockey game 4-1.  Doubling down in the hits department 21 to 10 and taking command of the faceoff circles in fashion winning 23 of 38 draws taken.

First Period

The first goal of the series went to Chet Hillier of the Anaheim Outlaws which was only the 2nd shot on goal of the period for the Outlaws.  Seems to of awakened the Knights offense as the respond with two goals before the period ends.  The first of two just a minute sixteen after the Hillier goal, KK redirects a shot/pass from Berni to beat Strom Chamberlain.  Still on the high of tying it up, Andrey Barbashev also touches the twine just two minutes after that one, with a quick wrister the Knights go up 2-1.

Shots  Outlaws 6  Knights 11

Second Period
With the score 2-1 in favor of the Knights, the bottom 6 go to work and get some big time goals.  Rotticus Scott crushes Leblond into the glass at the Anaheim blueline to cause a turnover, Takshak drifts a long shot on goal which was odly played by the netminser Strom and let out a juicy rebound for rookie 4th liner Daniel Laforest to bury it home at 4:57 of the period.  Less than ten minutes later Justin Keahi seals the deal as he sets up in th slot and take a nice feed from Theo Golury and Keahi makes no mistake with that one. 4-1 Knights!
Shots  Outlaws 8  Knights 24

Third Period
Third period was relatively quiet as all the scoring in this was done in the first two frames.  Two minor penalties were called against the Outlaws.

Final Shots  Outlaws 18  Knights 32
Final Score  Outlaws  1  Knights  4
Series: 1-0 Kelowna

Game Two

Different put forth by the Anaheim Outlaws but same results that matter in the end.  As a whole the Outlaws managed to put together a decent hockey game and played a full 60 minutes this time.  But the end score still in favor of the Knights by the same margin as in game 1 which was 4-1 final Knights.  Again out muscle them off the puck was the mantra in the Knights camp as they out hit the Outlaws by a margin of 24 to 11, and leading the charge was Knights forward Gylfi Eriksson with 5 hits.  The rest of the stat lines a re reasonably close but the Knights go ahead 2 games to none.

First Period

Laforest is the one to open up the scoring in this game, as he gitty ups and turns on the after burners to one time an errant pass, Chamberlain gets a pad on it but gives up a rebound right to laforest who followed up on his shot and drove the net to bank home the rebound at 10:42.  The rest of the period was evenly played with a light advantage to the Knights.  Goalies were on their toes as the fast paced action came at them from every angle.

Shots  Outlaws 10  Knights 16

Second Period

Second period started off very tentatively as there were very few shots taken in the first half of this period. Until the 9 minute mark when the line of Seppala, Forestier and KK set up in the offensive zone and went to work.  A flurry of chances were stopped by Outlaws netminder Chamberlain when finally Seppala twitched the twine on a redirect pass from Forestier. 2-0.

Shots  Outlaws 19  Knights 24

Third Period

Wasting no time, just about 2 minutes into the period Eriksson lights up the lamp to make it 3-0, the Outlaws put up a fight as grant Thurber with his 2nd of the post season reduces the lead to two goals but it won't be enough as Virtanen later found himself all alone on goal and wires one past the goalie to make it 4-1 Knights.

Game Three

With the series shifting over to Anaheim, the Outlaws desperately need to win the next two games to stay alive.  The 5,944 fans in attendance for this game get a bute, a total of 11 goals were scored and two extra periods were needed to determine the winner of this tilt.  The Outlaws led by the hat-trick of Phys Pritchard come out on top to win their first game of the series.  A total of 103 shots on goal were taken fairly even at that between the two teams with Anaheim taking one more 52-51.  Kelowna still dominated physically out hitting their opponents 37-27  but coughed up the puck 1 times to Anaheim's 7.

First Period

Making a quick summary, a total of five goals were scored this period, all being at even strength.  The two teams exchanged goals as not one team could hold a lead.  End result Kelowna skates away from the first period with a 3-2 lead even though out shot for the first time in this series.

Shots  Knights 9  Outlaws 14
Second Period
Two of the better goalies in the league dueling off and one could not tell!  Again a goal filled period as both teams let another 2 goals apiece and again Kelowna come away with the lead 5-4.   The Outlaws showing frustration and pick up 14 minutes in penalties that period but the Knights do not get any powerplay goals.
Shots  Knights 25  Outlaws 21
Third period
Goalies having a game to forget about with GR under 50 for both Kavanagh and Chamberlain.  Things do start to go there way right after the tying goal by Rikard Hammarberg his 2nd of the playoffs at 13:01 as Merauk throws one on goal hammarberg manages to get his stick on it and get it passed Kavanagh. Tie game 5-5 and we are headed to overtime.
Shots  Knights 33  Outlaws 31
OT Period Four
N scoring and no penalties in this period to report about.  Chances exchanged and goalies starting to get hot as Kavanagh's GR is now at 51,4 and Chamberlain is at 69,6.
Shots  Knights 43  Outlaws 39
OT Period Five
Believe it or not, these two teams decide to open it up and deliver a riveting 2nd period of overtime nearly going the full 20 minutes of play.  At 19:31 capping off a magical night for the win and the hatty,  Phys Pritchard with his 6th of the post season puts home the rebound on a sprawling Kanavagh to end the game. 6-5 Anaheim

Final Shots  Knights 51  Outlaws 52
Final Score  Knights 5  Outlaws 6
Series: 2-1 Kelowna

Game Four

Although the Outlaws got a huge win the last game, their momentum did not carry over into this one.  As a whole the two games played in Anaheim were much more evenly played.  The home ice advantage had some effect but not enough as the Outlaws drop this 4th game 4-3 in overtime again.

First Period
Just 33 seconds into the game and C.T. Carragher gets called for roughing and the Kinghts powerplay goes to work.  A minute into it and Vessot rifles one from a nifty saucer pass by Scianna to get the go ahead goal. 1-0. Just about six minutes after that goal and still without a shot on goal in this game, Outlaws defenseman Emila Bergman is sprung on a breakaway and makes no mistake to beat Kavanagh for her first of the playoffs on their first shot of the game. 1-1

Shots  Knights  14  Outlaws  6
Second Period

Anaheim  knowing they cannot continue  playing like they did the first come out big this period.  Scoring the next two goals in a span of a minute thirty-eight and take the lead 3-1.  Skipper Joe with his first and Emilia Bergman gets her 2nd of the game and the playoffs.  Kelowna answers back, Gylfi Erikkson with his 4th cuts the two goal lead in half at 19:43 of the period. 3-2 Anaheim.

Shots  Knights 23  Outlaws  19
Third Period

Kelowna wastes no time at all and strike right off the opening faceoff.  A lost draw, a poke check and a slick pass springs Luciano Vessot on a breakaway to score the tying goal 3-3.  Both goaltenders played a solid third period and neither team manages to score in regulation.
Shots  Knights 34  Outlaws 28
OT Fourth Period
Follow me here because it will be over quickly, Kelowna wins the draw and they dump it into the Outlaws zone.  Rotticus Scott turns on the after burners and beats out James Leblond to the puck and Kelowna controls it, whips a pass to a startled Simon Tashak in between the dots and fired it home past Chamberlain.  All over in 6 seconds!  Brian Skrudland beat that lol!

Final Shots  Knights 35  Outlaws 28
Final Score  Knights 4   Outlaws 3
Series: 3-1 Kelowna

Game Five

The 6,039 fans who came out to this game will not be disappointed.  Kelowna wins it in a decisive manner by a score of 6-1. Looking at the underlying stats, the game should of been a much closer one than this.  Two factors, 1-Kelowna was opportunistic 2- Chamberlain played a lousy game.  Shots were nearly even with Anaheim getting 24 and Kelowna 22.  Clearly the Knights are a much more physical team, as once again they out hit their foes 26-20.  The Outlaws locker room must of been disappointed to lose out like that, never a great feeling to get eliminated but when the score is so lopsided as this was the case is not an easy loss.

First Period
Some half assed defensive play it seems were to blame on the opening goal, multiple attempts were given to goal scorer Seppala as they failed to clear the rebound in front of Chamberlain. Seppala must of had 3 wacks at it before burying it passed the goalie for his 4th of the playoffs.  With his 2nd of the series and the post season, Simon Takshak adds to the lead at 16:42. 2-0 Kelowna.

Shots  Outlaws 7  Knights 9

Second Period

With almost nine minutes played and no shot recorded this period, Anaheim see their season quickly coming to an end as at the other spectrum, the Knights forwards are firing on all cylinders.  Ethan Duncan notches his 3rd of the playoffs at 10:51 and at 11:41 Gylfi Eriksson scores his 5th to make it 4-0 Kelowna.  Anaheim finally registers their first shot of the period with just under three minutes keft to play in the second.

Shots  Outlaws 9  Knights 15

Third Period
Again the Knights strike early and fast. A minute into the third Virtanen drifts one from the side boards and it gets passed the goalie.  At 5-0 the game and series some done and at this point are simply playing out the minutes.  Ethan Price scores a powerplay ti ruin the shut out binge and Rotticus Scott closes out the series with his 2nd and makes it 6-1 Kelowna.

Final Shots  Outlaws  24   Knights 22
Final Score  Outlaws  1   Knights  6
Series: 4-1 Kelowna
