S53 Awards Day 1 - Bojo & Jesster

S53 Awards Nominations: Day 1

Last off-season some of the fellas in the awards committee got together to pump out a few articles highlighting each award and the list of nominees it hopes of generating some hype and discussion ahead of the ceremony. It went over well so we're back at it again in S53! Much like last time we'll highlight the awards over the course of the next few days in the following order...

Day 1 - Bojo Trophy and Jesster Trophy
Day 2 - Dar Trophy and Richan Trophy
Day 3 - McBride Trophy and Uppercut Trophy
Day 4 - Stevens Trophy and McKeil Trophy
Day 5 - Mexico Trophy, Razov Trophy and Littleton Trophy

Jesster Trophy
The first award up for discussion is the Jesster Trophy, awarded to the leagues top rookie as deemed by the committee. The award itself is named after Ryan Jesster, a goaltender selected first overall in the inaugural season 1 draft by the Calgary Dragons. While a number of factors go in to selecting each nominee some of the more significant statistics used are the obvious ones like production and the ability to hang in the SHL without being a complete defensive liability. Our list of nominees are...

Ivan Maximus (7) - Receiving a nomination from all 7 committee members, young Ivan will be the favourite entering the voting portion of the awards process. Selected second overall in the S50 SHL Entry Draft by the Texas Renegades, the hulking Russian center scored 11 goals to go along with 20 apples for a total of 31 points, the most by all rookies in S53. He also led all rookies in power play production, shots, and time on ice.

Alexei Rykov (6) - Receiving a nomination from all but 1 committee member, Alexei is first in line to play spoiler to the old adage "the rookie with the most points wins the top rookie award". Selected 12th overall in the S50 SHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Dragons, the sharp shooting winger finished the season with 30 points, only 1 less than the previously mentioned Maximus. His 16 goals leads all rookies, and he was able to see similar success as Maximus despite a significantly reduced role (17 minutes per game vs 24) albeit on a far deeper squad in Calgary.

Luca Del Vecchio (3) - The third and final nominee for the Jesster, we're going all the way to the net on this one and selecting the starting netminder, Luca Del Vecchio. Selected 5th overall in the S51 SHL Entry Draft by the West Kendall Baltimore Platoon, the young goalie started 41 games finishing the regular season with a 17-18-5 record. While nothing special, his save percentage of 0.921 is 7th among all goaltenders and well above the average of 0.908. His 3 shutouts are on pace with the rest of the league, and his game rating off 77 is #1 among all goaltenders.

Other notable rookies that received nominations include Ursin Zimmerman (2), Sean Stevenson Jr. (2) and Joseph Weston (2).

Maximus cracks a brief smile after hearing his name called in the S50 Draft

Bojo Trophy
The other award we're looking at today is the Bojo Trophy awarded to the best defensive defenseman as deemed by the awards committee. Much like the Dar trophy awarded to the best defensive (two-way) forward, this one can be quite difficult to pin down and, as you'll soon see, can be interpreted in a few different ways. Named after the hulking Platoon defender Bojo Biscuit, he was known as one of the more punishing defenders during his prime and while his name was sometimes in discussion for the Stevens, he was always in the running for the Turd Ferguson. Our list of nominees are...

Barrett McCarthy (3) - One of two defenders to receive 3 nominations during the nomination process of the ballot, the long time Manhattan Rage blue liner was no slouch in his own end. Collecting a tidy +16 rating, 46 takeaways (17 giveaways) and 92 blocks to go along with his 60.2 CF% and defensive game rating of 74 he is in elite company and a worthy nomination for this award.

Tig Murphy (3) - Disregarding the respectable 35 points, the Hamilton Steelhawks defender and reigning Stevens Trophy winner was a nightmare for opposing forwards. Finishing the regular season with a +26 rating, 40-9 takeaway to giveaway ratio, a sparkling 65 CF% rating and a defensive game rating of 88 he was among the elite, if not the best, in his own end.

Slip McScruff (2*) - The third and final nominee, he is the winner of a 5 way tie in nominations (following a second nomination process). While his -23 rating and 42.6 CF% are concerning, the Winnipeg Jets defender was one of the most punishing players in the league racking up an insane 261 hits, second only to Manhattan Rage defender Andrej Doskocil. Add his 177 blocks, defensive game rating of 80, takeaway/giveaway ratio of 37-24 he edged out the other 4 potential nominees for this spot.

Other notable blue liners that received nominations include Geoff Moore (2), Mathias Seger (2), Guy Zheng (2) and Nat Emerson (2).

No stranger to awards discussion, Tig finds himself in the running once again

That's it for  today folks. See you again tomorrow for the Dar and Richan award discussion!
