S54 Rookie Class Mid-Season: Draft to Now (First Media x2)
#1

Quote:Ready for Grading.  Word Count: 1,216.  First Media x2

As most teams crest 25 games, we’ve entered the midpoint of the season, and I’ve decided to take a look at how each teams’ Rookies have been performing in comparison to where they were taken in the Draft.  I will go about this by breaking up the Forwards and Defensemen from the Goalies and doing each group as a separate analysis.  This is due to the Grading the Franchise Hockey Manager does for Goalies is askew from that of the Forwards and Defensemen.  Where only a handful of Rookie Forwards and Defensemen have a Grade over 60, but basically all of the Rookie Goalies were at or over a 60 Grade.

I grabbed the Stats from after the 6/10/2020 simulated games and a list of all Rookies Drafted and UnDrafted Free Agents, did an Excel RANK of the Grades that FHM has assigned to each player.  I then compared that RANK to the Pick of the Draft they were, ignoring any FORFEITs and PASSes, and put all UDFAs at 66, which is 1 after the last Drafted Player.  A positive Difference will mean that the Player is performing better than where they were Drafted and vice versa for a negative Difference, just purely based on FHM Grading Scale.

It will be formatted as follows:
Player Name / User Name (Draft Spot, Grade RANK, Difference)

Overall most teams did at or better than what they were working with for Draft Capital.  However there will always be winners and losers of every Draft.

St. Louis is off the charts with their Rookies doing twice as good as where they were drafted, helmed by amazing performances by both Colin Lambert and Brandt Underton, ranking 1st and 2nd among the Rookie Forwards and Defensemen.

With such a big positive Difference, someone had to be on the opposite of that spectrum, and that was unfortunately the Vancouver Whalers.  Starting with the lowest Average Draft Position of all of the Teams, there was unfortunately only down for Vancouver.  Being that they only have 4 Wins on the Season after the 6/10/2020 Simulation, which definitely doesn’t have the best influence on the Rookies’ Grades.

I like the idea! But if the RANK is based off the performance each player has had so far this season, the premise is inherently flawed since players taken to weaker teams, especially in the first couple draft picks, are likely to fall far since their teams are worse. I think a rank based off TPE gain since draft, or TPE per day, would be a better indicator of the actual strength of the picks in relation to their draft slot.

I think that would be an interesting premise for your next article.

Were you using GR as the stat you're basing off of?

Yes, this is being based off of the GR stat.

I have to disagree about it being a flawed basis, thinking that bad teams last year will result in bad grades.

So on one had you have Vancouver who were tied for lowest Points in S53, which as noted with the second worst Average Rating from their Rookies and currently have the least amount of Points in the standings, so I can see where this would support that.  Then you have Maine Timber who were the other team tied for last in S53 for Points, but their Rookies, which they have 12 of them so just about half of their team is Rookies, has the second best Average Rating and they have 5 of those Rookies in the Top 15, the only reason they don't look as good as St. Louis is because Maine started out with such a higher Draft Capital than St. Louis.  Then there's also Detroit Falcons, winners of S53 by a good margin, have the worst Average Rating for their Rookies, only having 1 in the Top 20, and then the next Rookie isn't until 50th spot.

Also, an article was already created by @DonutDefender that looks at TPE earned/Bank Account/Activity of all of the Rookies just a couple of days ago, so I felt like he already had something like that covered so I didn't want to duplicate his work.
