Hello and welcome to the Season 53 St. Louis Scarecrows Team Awards.

Usually, it’s a tradition in St. Louis to open this presentation up to a Rookie. It’s also usually a tradition to get this done before the All-Star break, but due to the intense amount of research this required it has been delayed.

The main thing this season, however, is that we’re making some changes and have two very special presentations as a part of the program. I’m presenting this to give some insight into how the plan developed, and I’d greatly appreciate it if the media proceeds could be split across our rookies.

After forty-eight seasons, forty seasons in St. Louis and thirty-seven seasons of awards, it’s safe to say that our team has a storied history. We’ve had seven Cups wins, several more Finals appearances, and so many great players.

Season 53 was the dawn of a new era for our community. Franchise Hockey Manager brings a new system of statistics and clarifies what was once intangible with the dreaded Simon T. We started talking about making changes after the All-Star game, took a really good look at the way our team has been run, and is run today.

The decision that we’ve come to is that it was time to refresh our awards for names that are still remembered in the dawn of the FHM era for more than the awards themselves or names in the rafters. Those names will still be remembered, but we have an opportunity to add new names to that list.

Tonight, we’re re-naming our awards as well as presenting them.

Without further ado, let’s begin.

The Bradley Wingels Award:
This is the award given to the best overall forward on the team. This player has a lot of points, a high plus-minus rating, and good offensive ratings.
Bradley Wingels was a Sniper Right Wing from the S16 class. He stayed with the Scarecrows for one season, where he scored 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 total points. In the S16 draft, he was chosen by the Minnesota Chiefs, where he was a good rookie in his first season and quickly emerged as one of the best players on the team in his second season. In the middle of S18, when it was clear that Wingels would prefer to leave in Free Agency, he was traded to the Texas Renegades. Bradley spent the rest of his career in Texas, including his Challenge Cup-winning Seasons 20 and 21 where he led his team in goals. He retired in S23, and his number was later retired by St. Louis.

The Bradley Wingels Award is being re-named the Barrett Blackwood Award.
Among the S48 class, Blackwood is a rising star for both the Edmonton Blizzard and Team USA as a Right Wing. For the Scarecrows, however, Blackwood tied the single season points record in S49 and then broke the record in S50. He had a career total of 69 goals and 91 assists for 160 points.

This season’s winner destroyed the competition. With 44 total points, they were our points leader and a valuable asset on the Power Play. Deceptively quiet in our locker room, save for the sharing of wisdom from SHL days gone by, this player is a great presence for our team on and off the ice. I am delighted to award the inaugural Barrett Blackwood Award to Mega Tron. @"Jakub"

The Marian Potoczny Award:
This is the award given specifically to the Best Two-Way Forward. This player may not have the greatest points totals, but they make up for it in shot blocking, checking, and takeaways. Their game ratings will be similar to each other, rather than favoring offense over defense in the system of play that the team uses.
Marian Potoczny was Wasty’s second character, a Slovakian Playmaker Center from the S14 class. Data for his S13 season doesn’t exist in the Bojo Box, so it’s hard to tell what he did for the Scarecrows, but he was drafted first overall in our first season in St. Louis. That season, he won the Ideen Fallah Trophy, for the Award Committee MVP, as well as the Ron Bolt Trophy, for the Most Sportsmanlike Player. He moved up after the one season with the ‘Crows and spent seven seasons with the LA Panthers before retiring after S20. With a SHL career 269 points, +84, and 17 career penalty minutes, Potoczny was a credit to the Panthers while he played. The Scarecrows retired his number, #13.

This award is being renamed the Mika Kandinsky Award.
The second award named in Kandinsky’s honor, and reflects his team records and achievements in his Junior career. Kandinsky recorded 115 career points, 154 hits, +54, and 25 blocked shots in three seasons, along with the Single Season +/- record of +29. In recent seasons, Mika has led the Toronto North Stars through their rebuild seasons, including winning the Jester trophy for Rookie of the Season in S50.

Fresh from winning the Brandon Holmes Award for the League’s Best Two Way Forward, we argued long and hard to give it to some scrub that actually put on a sport coat and tie for this. It feels odd, but the Kandinsky Award goes to Danny Marston. @Capt_Blitzkrieg

The Ondrej Ravchitikov Award:
This award is given to the Best Overall Defenseman. This player may be offensive, defensive, or both, but their grit and determination at the blue line is undeniable.
Ondrej Ravchitikov was another alumnus from the S14 class. Like Potoczny, he was only in St. Louis for one season and no data exists in the Bojo Box. He was traded around between Texas, Toronto, Manhattan, Seattle, Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg, but ultimately spent most of his time in Seattle and Manhattan. This includes the S18 Challenge Cup victory for the Seattle Riot. With a SHL career 285 points, including 205 assists, 96 Power Play points, 350 hits, and 495 blocked shots, he retired after S24 and should be remembered as a playmaking defenseman.

This award is being renamed the Basil Magnicotta Award.
Basil Magnicotta was a played for St. Louis his entire five season career before retirement. His accomplishments include two Four Star Cups and setting the St. Louis Career Assist record at 122 assists. With a career total 167 points, 185 hits, 399 blocked shots, +47 rating, and 47 special team points, Basil Magnicotta retired in S49.

This season’s winner has been a fantastic defenseman. From raw physical presence with a league-leading 216 hits, to finesse of the defensive game with 29 takeaways and 41 shots blocked, this player defined the St. Louis defense for his entire career. Off the ice, it has been a pleasure getting to know him and we wish him the best in Chicago. It is my esteemed pleasure to award the Basil Magnicotta Award to Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette, better known as LPLL. @Your Mothers Favorite Goalie

The Jermaine Tennyson Award:
This award is given to recognize our Best Goaltender. This team is built on having a solid presence in the net, who can steal games and stand the test of opposing offenses.
Jermaine Tennyson was a goaltender from the S15 class. He played only 40 games in St. Louis before moving up to the West Kendall Platoon. In those games, he had a 26-11-1 record with 1181 saves, 2 assists, and 115 goals against.

This award is being renamed the Friedrich Schmidt Award.
Schmidt was a three-time winner of this award in seasons 39-41. Backstopping the Scarecrows to the S39 Four Star Championship, Schmidt was also named S39 SJHML Best Goaltender. Schmidt finished his St. Louis career with a 99-57-19 record winning over half of his 178 starts.
Friedrich Schmidt Award
The recipient of this award should come as no surprise; she is one of few goaltenders to win it in all four seasons of her Junior career. As she moves up to the SHL and the Buffalo Stampede, we award the inaugural Friedrich Schmidt Award to our career-long starting goaltender, Elizabeth Doyle, one last time. We wish her the very best in Buffalo, except when it comes to our scoring against her. @Evok

The Luke Riggs Award:
This award is given to the player whose presence is unmissable in the locker room, who always has something to say, and remains a positive, leading force in for the team even if they are not in a direct leadership role.
Luke Riggs was the St. Louis GM for S16-17 and won a Four Star Championship in S16. Riggs finished with an overall record of 38-33-9.

The Luke Riggs Award is being re-named the Aron Hernadivic Award.
Aron “Fish” Hernadivic made a name for himself in St. Louis as an outspoken, fierce, and true leader on the ice and in the locker room. Current holder of the Scarecrows’ All-Time Assist record and now our Coach, Fish always has a kind word and sage hockey advice. He is also the first and only player to have won this award three times in his junior career. It is fitting that this should become his award.
For his high levels of enthusiasm and activity in the past two seasons, we recognize Eric Hudson as the inaugural winner of the Aron Hernadivic Award. @EricNCSU

The Kanye Summers Award:
This award is our Regular Season Most Valuable Player award. It is given to the Scarecrow player who most demonstrates on-ice prowess, excellence, and determination through the fifty games of the regular season.
Kanye Summers was the first St. Louis (Boston Battalion) draft pick in S5. The following season Summers was drafted First Overall by the LA Panthers. Summers won the Challenge Cup with LA in S6 and his jersey was retired by the Boston Battalion.

This award is being renamed the Nicholas Williams Award.
It should come as no surprise that we chose to recognize Nic Williams as the namesake for this award. Williams is on of the most decorated players in St. Louis history. Taking home a slew of team and SJHML awards, including winning both a Four Star Cup and Challenge cup in the same season with St. Louis and Winnipeg respectively. Williams finished his St. Louis career with 110 points in 150 games played.  William’s user, Nictox, was also Co-GM under TML99 that included the S46 Four Star Championship. In S53 Nictox took over as GM for one season, before moving up to become Co-GM of the SHL New Orleans Specters under JoeK.

This year’s Nic Williams Award goes to one of our consistent best players for the duration of his career. He won the Bodnar Rookie of the Season Award in S50, the Wingels last season, and has continued to be a solid presence on the front line as well as in our locker room. Featuring Superior Soviet design, he never gives up, never breaks down. As this player moves up for his rookie season with the North Stars, it is my honor to give our first award of the night and the inaugural Nicholas Williams Award for Team MVP to Ruslan Zaporozhets. @CptSquall

The Jarkko Kallestrom Award:
The Jarkko Kallestrom Award is given to the Playoff MVP.
Jarkko Kallestrom was the 3rd overall pick in S15. Kellestrom played one season in St. Louis, putting up 46 points in 40 games played, before moving on to an 11 season career in the SHL between Minnesota and Toronto.

This award is being renamed the Nicolaj Muller award
Muller was signed as a free agent towards the end of S46 and selected 22nd overall by the Buffalo Stampede in the S47 draft. Since then, Muller has heavily outperformed his draft position. Muller was awarded the St. Louis Team MVP for S47 and S48, Best Forward Award for S48 and S49, Most Active for S47 and Playoff MVP for S48 and S49. Muller finished his St. Louis career with 162 points in 164 games played and a Four Star Championship in S46.

As we entered into the Playoffs, very few had us as solid favorites in a series. We were only expected to win by a hair against Newfoundland, and it was expected that we’d play five games or fewer in Round 2 against Detroit.
While it took us a while to figure out Newfoundland and get past their own solid goaltender, it was the efforts of this player that got us to Game 7 against an offense that was thought unbeatable. I’ve already said that victories are built in the net, and this player has exhibited that time and again, especially in her last Playoff showings. It is my honor to recognize Elizabeth Doyle as this season’s recipient of the Nicolaj Mueller Playoff MVP Award.

The Vladimir Bodnar Award:
The Vladimir Bodnar Award is given to the Best Rookie of the Season. There are many recipients of this award that have gone on to do great things in this league, from Challenge Cup victories to high offices and General Manager positions. We always expect great things from our rookies, and this player has risen to the top of their class.
Vladimir Bodnar was the Scarecrows first round pick (6OV) in S16. The following season he was drafted 6th Overall by the Seattle Riot in the S17 SHL Draft. Bodnar was awards the SJHML Top Defenseman for S17, as well as team awards for Most Dedicated (S16) and Most Active (S16). Bodnar went on to win a Challenge Cup with Seattle in S18.

This award is not being renamed at this time.
This season, we had a stand-out candidate who came to us in the third round of the draft. The man from Maine posted 19 points, 21 takeaways, 24 blocked shots, and 37 hits in a statistically impressive rookie showing. Now he leads the S54 ‘Crows class in TPE, and has become an integral part of our locker room. The Rookie of the Season and recipient of the Vladimir Bodnar Award is Elwulf Jericson. @Jericson

The Michael Haan Award:
The Michael Haan Award is given to the Most Dedicated Player in the locker room. Whether it’s improvement, high activity, or just great personality, this player is a true Scarecrow and it is a privilege to have them among us.
Michael Haan was selected first overall in S9 by the Chicago Hitmen, one of the previous iterations of the Scarecrows franchise.  The following season he was selected 1st overall by the Edmonton Blizzard in the S10 SHL Draft. Haan was a 3 time Challenge Cup Champion in Edmonton (S13, 15, 16) and his number was retired by the Hitmen.

The Michael Haan award is being renamed the Joe Kurczewski Award
Kurczewski was Co-GM under TML99 from S34 to S45 and helped steer the Scarecrows to three Four Star Championships As a player, Joe K was the S31 Season MVP, S30 Most Dedicated (This award), S31 Best Two Way Forward and Two time Best Forward (S30, 31). Joe K is currently the GM of the SHL New Orleans Specters.

This player joined our locker room as a free agent in S52 and has been a bright spot in our team locker room with his enthusiasm and optimism ever since. One of the best things about waking up early is finding some encouragement posted overnight from this player. Ahead of the S53 season, he stepped forward with valuable scouting advice that has paid off in spades. He’s also focused very heavily on continuing to improve with a team-first mentality. For these things, I am delighted to present Krišs Dārziņš with the first re-named Joe Kurczewski Award for Dedication. @lilstifler

Tigole Dizzy Augustus Award for Excellence
The Tigole Dizzy Augustus Award for Excellence is given to the person who has done the most for our team in the past season. Typically, it goes beyond just the past season, and is a career achievement or accolade.
This award, established in S37, is named for three players whose exploits as Scarecrows are legendary, and whose players have been added to or are in consideration for the Hall of Fame. The players are Tigole Bitties, Roman Augustus, and Louie “Dizzy” Garrett.

This award, as the newest and most prestigious award that our organization gives, is not being renamed at this time.
In S53, we were delighted to keep this player for his fifth season. Despite many struggles, he has always been, and continues to be, a stalwart, kind presence in our locker room, if a little squirrely at times. For all of my seasons up to this point, he was our Assistant Captain, and he’ll be the Ass Cap in our hearts forever. More than just a locker room presence, Dangel was also a solid on-ice presence.
It is my privilege and honor to recognize this season’s Tigole Dizzy Augustus Award for Excellence winner, Sasha Dangelchek @"acdangel" for his five-season career with the St. Louis Scarecrows.

Special Presentation: The S54 Captain and Assistant Captains

Typically, this would be a presentation reserved for its own announcement, but I’m not doing this program for me and we have a lot of rookies.
I am stepping down as the Captain of the Scarecrows. The SMJHL is about making sure that players make it to the SHL, and so it becomes critically important to have as many leaders and mentors in the locker room as possible. Centering GM and Captain on one, or even two people, doesn’t make sense when having the titles spread out can help players identify people to ask for help more easily.
With that in mind, I am honored to announce our first Assistant Captain this evening.
This player has been an exemplary addition to our locker room since being added in Season 52. His dedication and excellence have been recognized already tonight, and it is with that in mind that he was an obvious choice to take up one of our letters.
We welcome Kriss Darzins as our first Assistant Captain. @lilstifler

The next player has been a solid and experienced presence in our locker room. He had a rough season, but that does not diminish off-ice talent. As he looks forward to a greatly-improved third and possibly final season with St. Louis, we want to recognize his continued dedication to our team.
We welcome Axel Meszaros as our second Assistant Captain. @ml002

Finally, our Captain.
Despite being relatively new to the SHL and recently welcoming his second child into his family, this player has stepped forward as a mainstay in our locker room and as a mentor to the S55 class of rookies. He’s a calm presence, and always has a positive outlook.
The St. Louis organization is proud to recognize and introduce Elwulf Jericson as our Captain. @Jericson

Very Special Presentation: Honoring TML99

TML probably won’t see this for a while. His site activity says he was last here in early May with his last post in March, and it literally takes 14 pings while he’s online to get him to notice us.

However, before you think of me or Joe or Nic as the “Scarecrow Guy”, you should be thinking of TML. Ryan put in 25 seasons as the General Manager of our team and brought us 5 Four Star Cups. He brought us players like the ones now bearing trophies, a couple of the older players that are being phased out, and so many more people who were great for our team and for this site. He managed this team alone for the first 7 seasons of his tenure before picking up a Co-GM, doing the manager’s tasks, keeping the forum locker room going before Discord, making lines, and building teams.

He’s recently been named the greatest SMJHL General Manager thus far, and I don’t think there are many who would disagree with that assessment. He is deeply missed as real life takes over virtual hockey.

I am honored and delighted to recognize TML99 with the very first St. Louis Scarecrows GM banner, to be hung in our rafters.

That’s all I’ve got for now. Thank you for joining us for this (late) special presentation. As next season is due to be the Golden Season for the Scarecrows organization, look out for more announcements as the off-season begins.

Congratulations to all of the winners. Congratulations to our Captain and Ass Caps. I'm so sorry it took so long.

When we decided to do the awards, I wanted to make sure that somebody stopped to explore why the old awards were so named. To remember them publicly and proudly one last time before bringing the new names forward and talking about them too. That took a lot more time and energy than I was anticipating, especially as we were figuring out how to be GMs and my classes kicked into full gear. Thank you to Eric for picking up my slack there.

Congratulations as well to all of the Award Titlists. Thank you for being Scarecrows, and here's to many more seasons!
