(This post was last modified: 08-14-2020, 11:18 AM by Gwdjohnson.)

The season is in full swing now, and you're in the thick of the SMJHL lifestyle. How have things been so far in your major junior hockey career?

Written option: Talk about how you have settled into life so far in the SMJHL, on and/or off the ice. How have you performed in this early portion of the season? Has the level of play been a huge adjustment? Are you enjoying the city itself? (These aren't questions you're required to answer; they're just possible prompts) (150+ words).

Graphic option: Make a graphic illustrating how your player has performed in the early part of this season. Must include a photo of your player/render, and three individual statistics of your player so far.

Reward
4 TPE for doing the thing. (Just one, not both.)

Only S55 SMJHL Rookies (S56 SHL Draftees) are eligible for this PT.

Link PBE or NSFL submissions here to get credit for Welfare claims.

You cannot claim TPE for this PT until a post is made in the global claim thread.

After the typical first game jitters, I think I've settled in quite nicely in the SMJHL. The situation I'm in with Colorado has really helped. The GMs have put me in a position in the lineup to succeed and not have too much pressure on me as a rookie. I've been rocking the third line most of the season and so far I'm handling my own. I've got 11 points, which is near the top of rookie scoring, and I'm looking for more. My teammates have been awesome as well and we're starting to pick up some chemistry on the ice.

The one thing that I would like to work on is my defense. I started out well, but I've dropped a little bit on my defensive rating. I just need to refocus myself and just work on the basics. I find myself trying to do too much on my shifts and I don't need to be doing that. If I can stick to what I know and keep it simple, I'll be fine. I'm excited to see how the rest of the season is going to shape up.

So far, things have gone pretty smoothly for Adrian Ayers. I did not know what to expect from Carolina, but the people here are beyond great and the city has been a pleasant place. I am getting all the time from the GM’s to develop, averaging just over 12 minutes per game. I do not feel much pressure to perform this season. I am taking a good look at how the toplines are playing and try to mirror my game like them. The GM’s told me to enjoy and focus on training. That is what i am doing right now. I had a slow start point-wise, but after my first goal the stats are slowly getting better, 3 goals and 5 assists in 24 games. I am satisfied with how things are going. The team is doing well, battling for the top seed and i feel i have really settled in.

All in all I've settled quite well into my team and the SMJHL. At first I had no clue what was going on and what I needed to do, but thanks to people like Evok and Faelex showing me the ropes I found that nothing on here is too complicated. I've even figured out how to build a signature! On the ice my player has been pretty good in a backup goalie role, with a .913 save percentage, 3.32 GAA, and game rating of 69 (nice) in 8 games played. Of those 8 games I started 6, and was only able to pull out one win so far unfortunately, but I've never been pulled from the game, and as my young player and the young team I play on grows, the wins will come. As for in the locker room, I have only positive things to say about my teammates and GMs. They are all super friendly and wonderful people and I'm looking forward to playing alongside them for the next few seasons.

Oh man I just wrote about this for a media post haha

At the start of the season, I set three goals for myself. I wanted to make the playoffs in Nevada's inaugural season, score 15 points, and maintain a 65 DGR.

Funk is sitting at 1 goal and 4 assists for 5 total points in 23 games played. Less-than-stellar for sure, but pacing for 11 of my desired 15 points in 18:38 ATOI and only 0:29 of that on the powerplay is definitely reassuring. While I wouldn't say the 15-point-mark is entirely out of reach, look for that points goal to be crushed next season with some improved offensive attributes and possibly some heftier deployment in the offensive zone and on the man-advantage.

As a pleasant surprise, Funk has been hovering comfortably over his DGR goal, with a 72DGR through 23 contests. This is also good for Funk to be tied for the 14th best DGR in the SMJHL.

Playoffs are something I will refrain from commenting on for the time being.

Budweiser has thoroughly enjoyed his time in the SMJHL. His off-ice performance and scoring may be better than his on-ice, but overall he considers it a solid rookie season. With Bud’s limited offensive ability, he has mostly been relied upon as a shutdown defenseman and penalty killer. With six points so far, he considers it a solid success. He is a bit disappointed in the amount of credited checks; however, disappointed in the level of his overall defensive play with being top 70 GDR of 63, top 40 in blocked shots.

Off the ice has been an amazing success. Bud has become a regular at the best bars and clubs in St. Louis along with being a frequent visitor to the East Side (Gentlemen Clubs). His kill count is over one a game and their average rating is a solid 8.5/10. His assist rate for his teammates and local friends is not bad with about 1.5 per game. Overall, he seems to becoming a legend. Time will tell if it all gets into his head or if diseases end his career early.

Danger is settling in nicely with Nevada. The goals I set for myself in my first PT were 20 points with ten of those being goals. In terms of progress, it's a mixed bag. A recent role switch has caused an uptick in production for me that puts me on pace for my 20 point goal, but 10 goals is starting to seem out of reach. Despite my accuracy, getting open and offensive read attributes being my highest I almost never shoot. I have less than half the shots of the next winger on the team. I'm not 100% sure what the root cause of this is, but until I can remedy it 10 goals may seem out of reach. That being said, I am happy with the steps my defensive game has taken as well as my playmaking ability. The hardest part about the season so far has been the results. It was demoralizing to see Quebec pull away from us, but now that we've hit a stride and are earning some Ws it's easy to keep on the growth mindset and look forward to the future. Nevada will be making some noise soon enough.

Kamado is settling in quite well in Nevada similar to his teammates. With the influx of rookies that we have taken in post draft, he's used his agents connections to show them around as well as help them get set up in the area. Going from swing a sword to a hockey stick was a big change for Kamado was hard but it is has gotten much easier for him as he's learned the game of hockey. While he takes the occasional slashing penalty (lol bad anime joke). He actually has been a strong player on the ice for the Battle Born. In terms of settling in statistically he has been able to slowly creep onto the score sheet as the team is able to score points. He currently is sitting at 7 points in 23 games. Fairly close his 20 point goal over their 50 game season. He also recently increased his shot blocking so I hope that his SB's as well as DGR will increase. What was very impressive for him was that although the battleborn were getting out shot and scored early on, he was sitting at only a -1 for a long time. However he was able to get one back and is only at -8 for the Battleborn. Hopefully with his new teammates and their continued growth, they'll be able to improve that back to 0 or even above.

The city of Vancouver is wonderful. The people are so welcoming. It's a bit overwhelming at times, especially since the town I came from might have trouble filling a restaurant. But with the city, being able to "get away" just outside the city limits, the fans, and my teammates I've managed to make the adjustment. If you can't fall in love with Vancouver, I don't see how you can fall in love with any city.

But I'm disappointed in my play so far this season. I feel like I am hitting well, but I keep taking some dumb penalties when I get frustrated and that hurts my team.  I feel like I have a strong beginning to each game and then start to flounder around, especially in front of the net. [Name Redacted] is a great goalie, constantly encouraging me, but I feel like I have let him down especially. He stops everything he can but I need to do a better job of stopping shots getting to him and clearing out the very occasional rebound he leaves.

I was very excited when I scored my first goal though! I got the puck for it, my [teammates] all signed it and I mailed it home to my parents.  My dad hung it up on our family's hockey wall.

I'm going to keep pushing myself to be better everyday. This team can win. We've had some rough games, especially recently, but we're going to pull together and get the job done.

I have been loving it so far. Jonas has put up 4 goals and 1 assist on the blueline so far. I honestly thought that he would have more assists than goals but I guess Jonas is a bit greedy and eager to make a name for himself by scoring goals. Not a bad thing but I wish he would start assisting the more experience players more. But maybe he is just getting unlucky in that regard. Personal goal is still to hit 20 points, but he is very much bought in to the team goal of winning the 4 star cup. His defence is okay, the rating could be higher, but he is still fairly inexperienced so that is something that we can work on in the long run. He has scored a couple of clutch goals and so that is always good to see!

The locker room is definitely one of my favourite parts of this whole experience. Jonas has fit in very well with all of his teammates, even if he is not always around to talk as much as he would like, he very much enjoys the convos he does have with them. Lots of very fun personalities in the newfoundlad locker room, that's for sure. Looking forward to a few more seasons with them!

As a player on the ice Kobo has struggled to find his footing in the SMJHL. Though he did just have a minor breakthrough as he scored his first goal recently. Through 24 games on the season Kobo has scored 1 goal and 2 assists. It's definitely been a slow start, but despite the lack of offense he's only got a -2 in +-, which is a good sign that his defense isn't holding him back. It is hard to know what to expect out of a rookie fourth line player, but I think Kobo has a long way to go before he is considered a valuable member of the team. Fortunately, the Whalers locker room has been a great place to spend time and get to know fellow teammates. Hopefully by the end of the season Kobo won't be a liability anymore and can actually help the team win some of these games that we've recently been losing. My goal by the end of the season is to be scoring a point in at least 1 in every 4 games, which is double the pace I've got right now.

I think I’m settling in nicely and my stats aren’t actually nearly as bad as I thought they’d be coming into the season. I have a 2.26 GAA and 0.917 SV%, which means I’d probably be the starter if it weren’t for the fact that Scoochie Stratton is playing absolutely lights out with his 1.73 GAA and 0.931 SV%. Other than that, Anchorage is a pretty cool place. I do love fishing, and the salmon here are humongous big. Couple that with that fat $4.5m I got for this contract and I’m in paradise. Big ole log cabin in the middle of nowhere, a flip phone because modern civilization is a cess pool of degeneracy, and some rods to catch some fish. The team has welcomed me with open arms and it’s been a really great locker room environment for me to flourish in and become accustomed to life in North America.

Going from Russia to Quebec City has been a little bit of a change. You know, there are a lot of things that are different that I am not necessarily used to when going into Canada, but overall, I really cannot complain. I have really liked Quebec City, everyone is really supporting of you as long as you are on their team. I can imagine that other teams would not like coming here at all, that would be brutal. They probably yell and scream at them when for us, we are like celebrities who they love to cheer on. You know, there are a lot of good food in Canada as well which I really appreciate. I really like the french fries and gravy, I think they call it poutine or something like that. It may be one of my favorite meals, I try to have it before every game, maybe that is good or it weighs me down, I am not really sure. But, I really like Quebec City. It's a great team.

Honestly, Kenji Sugimoto has a lot to overcome when it come to adjusting, both on and off the ice. We will speak to his on the ice adjustments first, then move to off the ice.

On the Ice

Sugimoto, having spent most of life focusing on more performative skating, has to learn how to get a bit stronger. He has natural talent and is very mobile on the ice, but struggles on the defensive side of the game. He also doesn’t have a lot of confidence in his shooting abilities yet, and is more of a playmaker out on the wing. This caused him to join Nevada late, and he’s behind his peers in terms of development.

Off the Rink

Kenji still has major adjustments off the rink as well. The move from Osaka to Nevada is not particularly easy, even if Kenji has a basic understanding of English. He’s not one for nightlife so Las Vegas is out of the question. The desert isn’t like anything in Japan. And American culture is a lot different than what he saw from Hollywood. Regardless, Kenji believes he made the right choice trying the SHL and thinks he can be a bright spot for his entire country.
