S55 SMJHL PT #3 - Settling In
#46

On the Ice:
Maier’s game has adapted reasonably well, especially on the defensive side. While she’s managed only 1 goal and 4 assists in her time with the Falcons thus far, her defensive game has stepped up, and she’s managed to post a 61 DGR through her first 14 games. In the advanced stats department, she ranks in the top 3 on the team in both Corsi relative and Fenwick relative, maintaining her status as a defensively sound defender. While Detroit has struggled this season, and left goaltender Thor Odinson out to dry time and time again with the shots allowed on goal, Maier and the other young defenders will doubtlessly improve that in future seasons.

In the City:
While her hometown of Jena in Germany is considered a city, it’s nothing compared to Detroit, and the adjustment to life in America has been interesting. Her grasp on English has greatly improved, and she’s embraced the other local sports teams, occasionally finding time to watch Pistons games in local sports bars, where she’s been recognized once or twice. While she’s found the adjustment to be strange, just based on sheer population, she has greatly enjoyed her time in the city.

It has been a long road for Vladmir Petrov, and the rest of the Petrov Brothers so far in this season. It has been rough for many reasons, the biggest one being that the whole family was split up and sent their different ways throughout the SMJHL Draft. Vladmir was lucky to be teamed with his brother Slava in Anchorage, which is unironically the closest place to home. Slava and Vladmir have a shared apartment and have brought a lot of their things from the homeland with them to just try and feel more at home. It has been a grueling process, with at least Valdmir missing his family a lot, but it is all worth it in the end. They got together over the all-star weekend break and spend some quality time together, learning of each other’s experiences in the new cities and of course made some great traditional dishes from their homeland that Mother had taught them.

It’s a bit amazing how well Xavier Doom has adapted to life in the J. There were concerns for him moving to St. Louis from Iceland, but he assimilated very well into the American culture. As for his play on the ice, well, it hasn’t been the absolute best it could be. Doom currently sits with 4 goals and 9 assists, which is good for 5th on the team in points. That’s even more impressive when you consider that, for some reason, Doom currently sits dead last in ice time for the Scarecrows. That’s a bit frustrating. He’s one of only two players on the team that currently sits above a minus as well. The Scarecrows sit in the middle of the pack, and they need a spark. Doom has been outspoken in the locker room how they should bottom out and work towards next season already. He doesn’t love how the team feels right now, and it’s like they’re treading water. That has fallen on deaf ears as well. As a result, Doom just keeps doing his job, and learning the American game. He’s close to breaking out, look for it next season. (194)

This season has been a lot of fun as I settle into the league. Being drafted by the Outlaws has been super helpful, and the locker room is great; especially because I got drafted with a great friend in Dylan. The level of play has definitely been a major adjustment, especially because of how fast I shot out of the gate in preseason. Going from scoring half a dozen goals in a couple games, to only scoring that much all season, has been kind of a bummer but it helps me strive for greater things in the future. On the other hand, I set a season goal for myself to rack up 10 total points and I think that I will be able to hit that mark by season end. I haven't been shooting lights out this season, but I have been progressing very nicely and just trying to make a good impression for the SHL draft. Playing in Anaheim has definitely been a change of scenery from Hawaii, but thankfully I adjusted well. All things considered, the league is filled with tons of great people, and i can see why so many are attracted to SHL.

Kauppinen seems to be settling into the league well, based on the general lineup of the his team, the Vancouver Whalers. Although he isn't on pace to meet his point goal (currently on pace for 14 points, while the goal was 20), there's not much he can do on a currently-rebuilding Vancouver and while playing third-line minutes on top of that. It seems that his development is coming along as it should be, especially as seen in the recent 7-1 victory over the Nevada Battleborn, where he logged two goals and one assist to bring his point total to 9. Outside of the hockey world, Valtterri has definitely had fun in Vancouver, and North America in general, for that matter. He's seen the sights, and experienced a lot of what the Whalers' home city has to offer. On Twitter, he's enjoying playfully trashing the Whalers goalie Name Redacted, along with chatting it up with some other guys from the SMJHL and SHL.

With the SMJHL season slowing to a more reasonable pace as the season enters the dog days, and Aalto has a few games under his belt, he can finally sit back and get prepared for the next big step.

No, not the SHL draft, but keeping the morale up on a team that is under performing this season. Detroit now sits last place in their respective conference and with a pretty steep mountain to climb to take part in the post season.

Thankfully, Aalto can lean on his agent, and former SHL Champion, for guidance on how to approach times like this, how to stay positive and make sure other rookies and teammates are not putting too much pressure somewhere they should not.

After a handful of rather good games for Aalto this season, his stats are looking nice on paper, although they are of limited starts.

Aalto, along with the rest of his team, is sad but incredibly happy to see their GM moving on to bigger and better things by taking over an SHL expansion team!

Dekens is not performing as well as I may have hope through the first part of the season. That being said not all of his tpe has been put into his build just yet. With a big update coming today he will hopefully turn things around. Dekens set a goal of having a positive plus/minus and that is very close to happening. He needs to start putting more points up while also being solid defensively and developing. Moving forward Dekens should focus on the defensive aspect of his game and the rest will come. If you're good defensively, you will get the pluses no matter what. He's looking forward to the remainder of the season and helping St. Louis get into the playoffs. As they say, anything can happen in the playoffs and Dekens wants to be in the city when the cup is won. Dekens has loved being in St. Louis, it's a gorgeous city to live and play in. He wants to bring a cup home there.

It's certainly been an interesting experience to say the least being on an SMJHL expansion team. The season certainly started very rough, as we were barely getting any points and were getting seemingly outshot like crazy; this was not to be unexpected though. However, the team really settled in together with the notion that as the season progresses, we will absolutely and steadily improve. Sure enough, our theory has been correct, as the team has really started to find some consistent level of some success on the ice though our hard training and commitment to one another as teammates. Aside from things improving on the ice itself, things have certainly taken a turn for the better in the locker room, as our management team has truly done a tremendous job in creating a fun, active, and desirable environment that helps keep one another both active and inspired to improve, so that as a collective unit, we can continue to progress as a team on the ice. In sum, things are really settling in great here in Nevada thus far, and I am excited to see how the rest of the SMJHL season plays out for both Bane and my fellow Battleborn.

On the ice, John Donair has really been coming into his own as a garbage collector. He wears that hat with a lot of pride, as his teammates have been relying on him to chase rebounds and screen the net. That's never really been John's thing - on the Milwaukee Power, he definitely played more of a traditional power forward role. But with a new wave of talent in a new league comes new responsibilities, and Donair's mental game has been carrying him to new heights while making good friends along the way. Although he feels the hits and blocks should be a little higher, Donair is happy to have contributed a few more goals than some of the other rookies thus far.

Off the ice, John is still getting used to California weather. He's never been much of a shorts-and-T-shirt kind of guy, but when you're out in the heat at 8 in the morning, it's time to become one of those guys! Eventually John hopes to see some sights, go to the beach, go to NorCal and run the hills -- basically explore the area -- but he is patiently waiting until his first official offseason for that. For now, the Outlaws have a Four Star to win.

We're a couple of weeks into this season and if there's one thing I've noticed about my adjustment to the SMJHL its that I still know almost nothing about hockey. The index says I've laid 27 hits though, which seems like a solid number and is above the number of other wingers that I see on the list. I'm not smart enough to tell if I've scored goals based on the index, but the pure fact that I'm getting to smack people while going really fast (hopefully) is enough to make me excited. I'm not sure how much that's helping the Scarecrows, however. We're 13-18 on the season and are really struggling to score goals with an 83-112 ratio in that department. I guess that does give me the information I need to say that I'm not scoring enough goals. So I'm accomplishing one of the two things I want my player to do which is cool, still struggling to know if I'm actually doing certain things, but having a whole lot of fun thus far.

So we are now half way through the SMJHL and things are settling nicely for me. I am showing progression every game and i am becoming "one of the boys" so for me things
are perfect. Yes i was hoping to get a couple more points here and there but you know what, my manager is happy with me, the boys are happy with me, what more could an
upcoming player need? Every game i am bringing new tactics to outshine the apposing team and i am putting these quick hands to the test everyday making sure they
are ready for those snappy passes that my team needs. Out of 35 games played i have recieved a total of 5 points, all assists, which shows i am continuing to setup my
team mates for those all important goals which will continue to push this team to the top.Its all about team work, and boy i got this!
