As a new member of this community, I will try my hand at an analysis of one of the newest SMJHL teams, the Quebec City Citadelles. Despite sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and unlikely to be a title contender this season, Quebec City should not fret for the future. Alexander Roach sits 12th in scoring with 31 points and is the clear offensive leader and has one year left of junior eligibility to continue to guide a large group of current rookies. With 17 SMJHL rookies on the roster, this team will be very scary if these players remain active and continue to grow. The first overall selection in the S55 SMJHL entry draft was Zdenko Beranek from user ztevans. When I watched the draft, the commentators had nothing but high praise for this dedicated user and he should be a valuable component to future successful seasons. However, at the time of writing, the S56 player with the highest TPE would be Teylora Petrov. One of several Petrovs on the roster, another high quality player at the defense position will provide another building block on the back end. Beyond the S56 players, the Citadelles were able to score some talent from the expansion draft. With their first two picks in the draft, Stan Q. Next and Sven Gunnar were selected, two S55 prospects. Next and Gunnar have 15 and 19 points this season, respectively, but their value will also come in the following season, allowing some of the younger players to gain TPE without too much pressure to contribute immediately.
The future direction is pretty clear for the Citadelles, in the coming seasons they will be in the thick of competition with the rest of the league for the four star cup. For future drafts, it is hard to say a specific area to focus on. This will most likely depend on active users and filling in the gaps if some players begin to fall behind. This may be in part to my inexperience, but I believe a potential challenge QCC could face is this new user inactivity if they cannot become competitive sooner rather than later. It is always easier to compete for a winning team because at the end of the day everyone wants to reach the same goal. I sincerely hope that this does not happen but a factor of consideration nonetheless. Finishing out this season, I believe the Citadelles should strive to try and edge by the Detroit Falcons to avoid finishing last in the conference. Already 7 points ahead of the other expansion team, this would solidify a decent season for the first year team. In division play, QCC should become even more competitive with Newfoundland and Maine losing key players to the SHL in the upcoming season as QCC retains their younger players for longer. This season was especially hard due to the nature of this division with Newfoundland leading the league in points and Maine sitting third in the Eastern Conference. All in all, even though the present has not yielded great results, the future is bright for one of the newest SMJHL teams. (This was written over several days so apologies for any statistical inconsistencies) APPROVED +5 TPE @canes2112
