With the closure of the regular season in the SHL on the horizon, more and more attention is being paid to the expansion proceedings on the horizon. Protection lists are due at midnight EST tomorrow, and the SHN is here with our predictions of the entire expansion process. Eight SHN correspondents each acted as GM of two teams they are unaffiliated with and set up protection lists, then two correspondents will act as GMs and draft their expansion teams in part two. With teams losing two players each in this draft, we expected fewer deals to be struck, and didn't leave that option available to our mock GMs.

The correspondents responsible for the protections are as follows:
Platoon @"jfisherr" Chiefs
Stampede @reid syndicate
Dragons @roastpuff Panthers
Blizzard @sve7en Barracuda
Steelhawks @jeffie43 Rage
Wolfpack @Faelax pride
Specters @"luketd" Renegades
Stars @juke Jets

And our GMs drafting the teams in part two are:
@reid
@grok
Stay tuned these next few days to watch them draft, but let's first see what their options are...

PROTECTION LISTS

Baltimore Platoon

Baltimore is a team in the midst of a change in eras, with the engine change exposing a team that just wasn’t ready to compete, even as the GMs made trades to try and grind out results for that fourth and final playoff spot. This resulted in BAP losing much of their own draft capital, as they don’t own a first round pick until S59. BAP has begun to try and rectify these trades by beginning to sell their players, with aging veterans such as Geoff Moore, Yoshimitsu McCloud, and Ethan Ross recently being shipped out in order to reacquire at least some draft assets. With some of their actives being shipped out, BAP has signed a number of players that have no chance of being protected, making it fairly easy to assume who will be protected and who will be exposed. With 3 sort of active defencemen on their roster, as well as a solid S53 prospect in Kalashnikov, the defence protection slots were fairly easy to figure out. This leaves their 3 low TPE IA defencemen exposed, Khan, Zhernov, and Wilson. All 3 would be easily replaceable if they were taken in the expansion draft.

Forwards were a little tougher to figure out as they have a number of aging veterans that may be looking to compete for a cup as they begin to regress out of the league. Locks for forward were Karl Krashwagen, a high earning S50 power forward, who, along with Ethan Duncan, an S53 with 812 TPE, look to be the future of Baltimore’s forward corps. I also ended up protecting Brock Nuck, who is signed to a big money deal but has a modified NTC. I am unsure if he’d be willing to waive it for Baltimore to get his contract off the books. Also protected were Nickolas Klaus and Petr Mikulak. These two veterans could be asked to be left exposed in order to chase a Cup, but I imagine BAP protects them and if they do want to move on, trades them to acquire more assets. My last two expansion spots came down to Simothy Drunkebird, Henrik Lundqvist Jr., and Indigo Trevino. Svensson and Ralchanikov were both not considered as they are low TPE, regressing players. I ended up protecting Drunkebird and HLJ as they are both still young players that are far away from regression, and in the case of Drunkebird, still semi-active. I could see BAP protecting Trevino if they believe they can convince him to come back to activity, but for now, he’s exposed.

Buffalo Stampede

Buffalo is in an unenviable situation expansion draft wise - being a stacked team with too many people to protect and not enough spots. They helped their situation massively before the deadline however, trading for expansion GM Eko van Otter. This has the dual benefit of helping their S55 title bid, as well as limiting the damage in the expansion draft. With only two players being allowed to be picked from each team, and Otter guaranteed to be one, Buffalo only stands to lose one player in the draft. This is a huge win for Buffalo’s damage control.

In terms of obvious protection candidates, Monkey D Luffy stands out as the first player to sharpie into the protection list. Luffy reached 2K TPE this season, and has been lighting up the league. Michael Scarn would be in a very similar boat, but as he has tested free agency several times in the last few seasons, he might be a bubble candidate. Hippo Passamus and Aaron Hernadivic are two players with NTC’s who will be added to the protected list as well. That leaves 4 forward spots left. S53 top prospects Jaska Seppala and Steve Harrington are future studs for the team, and Buffalo likely will not want to lose either of them, so you can count on them being protected as well. Buffalo then has two spots left between Scarn, Bobby Sharp, Matt Kholin, Rintarou Okabe, and Victor Marius. As Kholin recently signed an extension and is peaking around 1900+ TPE, he likely gets a spot. Okabe is not a max earner, and Marius is old (S39) so they are probably left exposed. The question is now Bobby Sharp vs Michael Scarn. As mentioned before, Scarn has shown a tendency to test free agency. So Sharp probably gets the last spot.

In terms of defense, Buffalo has a bit easier situation to deal with. Cassius Darrow, Alexander Selich and Poopity Scoop are three likely auto-protects, as they are all high TPE keys to the core of Buffalo’s defense. From there, it is a battle between Augustus Wang, Eric Vanderberg and Nicholas Owens for the final protection slot. Wang vs Owens is a tough decision, and it really could be a coin flip. I am going with Wang getting the final slot, as his higher TPE fits Buffalo’s win now mode slightly better.

In net, there is no decision to be made, as Elizabeth Doyle runs away with the protection slot.

Calgary Dragons

Calgary is a team that many thought would perform in a mediocre manner this season; however, they have managed to prove their detractors wrong and are in the 3rd spot in the West with a comfortable lead over Texas. This season is likely to be the last hurrah for this core, with a couple of retirements coming up, and expansion likely to thin the team even further. For this protection list, I prioritized active players and prospects over inactives, and unfortunately, it meant that some good S46 defencemen get exposed due to lack of protection slots.

Mike Izzy is retiring, so he does not need a protection slot. Rush and Rykov are both inactives, along with Chico Smeb, so they are exposed. Vrzala and Klozoff just unfortunately lose out on protection slots to the other stacked defensemen, so they are exposed and most likely to be picked. Elle Rush is an IA backup goalie, so she gets exposed and is easily replaced - not picked most likely, so that’s not a worry there.

Bouchard, Batsbak, Parmborg are locked up as the core centers of this team, and Nicky Pedersen Jr, Joseph Weston, Mikael Choybuk, and Anders Christiansen fill in on the wings. The defense slots are taken up by Otis B Driftwood, Brennan Kennedy Jr and Leopold Lockhart - 3 high earners you want to protect, of course, and the sole prospect needing (and getting) a slot is Bradley Barkov, who looks to slot in next season. Kata Vilde gets the goalie slot, and there we have it for the Calgary Dragons.

Chicago Syndicate

Chicago is in a similar-ish situation to Buffalo in the fact that they are a competitive team with a lot of players in their prime. Thus, they have a lot of hard decisions to make. On the forward side of things, they traded for retiring player Ethan Ross, which means they will not have to protect that top 6 forward. In terms of obvious protection candidates at forward, Ryan Shepard, Lallo Selman, Daniel Smeb and Martijn Westbroek stand out as three locks currently on the roster. Smeb, Selman and Westbroek are at or reaching their peak as 1800+ TPE forwards, and Shepard is a top earning S50 player who is breaking out in the league. From there, top prospect Ryuuji Minamino seems like a good bet to be protected as well. Chicago also has two 1500ish TPE players in Gunnar Soderberg and Nick Connolly with several seasons before regression each. They are good bets to take the 6th and 7th forward protection spots. That leaves Nolan Sawchuk, Cameron Carter II and prospect Patrick Twist left exposed from the forward core. While Chicago likely does not want to lose any of these players, they are the most expendable of the forward core, with CC2 regressing hard, Sawchuk entering his 2nd season of regression at a lowish TPE level, and Twist being a well earning prospect, but missing time due to being IA.

Chicago’s true dilemma is when it comes to deciding their defensive protection list. Akira Ren is an auto protection lock due to being the GM, so that takes one spot off the board. From there, Parker Smeb and Corey Kennedy are two players at or approaching their peak and will be protected without a doubt. For the final spot, we have a face off between S51 players Abel Skinner and Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette as well as S46 defender Jules Watt. With Watt entering regression after this season, and LPLL several hundred TPE behind Skinner, I would imagine that Skinner gets the final defensive protection spot for the Syndicate.

In net, starting goaltender Tibuk Soonika gets the protection spot.

Edmonton Blizzard

Edmonton is in a rough spot with the looming expansion, having one of the best rosters in the league means they also have a roster ripe for the picking after their hopeful cup run. On the forward side, Tony Pepperoni requires a protection slot, but it would have been a no brainer regardless. It gets harder for Edmonton beyond that though. Julio Tokolosh, William Hartmann, and Jon Forty-One round out the rest of the high earners, leaving just 3 more protection slots for the remaining 6 guys they’d most want to protect (Theo Morgan, Jean-Paul Boivin, James Truong, Barrett Blackwood, Hiro Fujikawa, and Bo Kane. With the idea that Bo Kane will be looking for a big contract and a number of UFAs looming, including 1900+ TPE KarlstraBe Scholz, he’s the first one left unprotected. There’s reason to believe that Theo Morgan would re-sign in Edmonton this offseason, and he’s worth protecting on that alone. Then, of Boivin, Truong, Blackwood, and Fujikawa, Truong and Fujikawa are the ones unprotected due to their age.

The defense is a little easier to sort out, with Connor Tanner being a must-protect and Karlstraße Scholz needing protection, the last two slots come down to Brady McIntyre, FR Finn-Rhys, Jon Toner, and Tor Tuck. FR is a no-brainer, at third in his class for TPE, and of the remaining 3 defenseman in regression, McIntyre is both the highest TPE and tied for the youngest.

Hamilton Steelhawks

The Hamilton Steelhawks are in a good position moving forwards as they have just the right amount of protections necessary to protect their high end earners such as Samuel Michaud, Gabriel Johnson, Guy Zheng, Hugh Jazz, Aaron Wilson, Rikard Hammarberg and Dick Clapper. Similarly, Nour (Skao Anazibf), A Jobin and Dale Miller make a significant impact in their LR and it would be hard to see them leaving their current positions as Hamilton Steelhawks. For their last protection, I predict that they’d give it to DrunkenTeddy (Robert Phelps) as a sign of respect for all the seasons he’d spent on the team and his time as a member of their management.

Los Angeles Panthers

The Los Angeles Panthers, like their logo, is about to have the sun set on them. There are two retirees - Max Mauldin and Daniel Bischoff - which hurts their future forward strength a bit, and Oliver Cleary, their highest TPE defender, has informed the club that he will not be re-signing with them. This is a team on the down swing, and they were unable to have one last run into the playoffs this year, having been passed by the Texas Renegades and the Winnipeg Jets. Only 9 players are signed long term, and they will use all the slots - and protect the other active players. Kenny Creller, GOD McZehrl, Borromini Cannellini, Phillip Winter, Vorian Atreides, Tony Ford, Disisde Dayudie, Elijah Jones, Thomas Bathory, Simon LeBlanc, Jimmy Wagner (the only S53 prospect) and Knox Booth get the protection slots.

Ricky Bobby and Jordan Von Matt are inactive, and will be exposed, as is backup goaltender Nolan McMahon.

Manhattan Rage

Manhattan is another team that is in an ideal spot moving forward as I believe they would be able to escape losing their core group of players to the new expansion GMs, Hotdog and Tig. I do think they will lose some key pieces in Geoff Moore, Reginald MacIntyre and Anastasia O’Koivu, but due to all of them being older players, Manhattan continues to keep its core together.

Minnesota Chiefs

Minnesota is likely one of the teams that has an easier time figuring out who to protect and who to expose, due to a decent number of prospects that have stalled in development, as well as a couple of players that are way over the hill. However, this team has some elite talent at the forward position, and has elite talent in the forward prospect pipeline. No brainers to protect are players at or nearing their peak, like Colin Gibbles and Noah Gallagher. These elite talents will show the forward prospects the ropes, as joining these two as locks are Cal Labovitch, Rocco Berni, and JMac N Cheese. These high earning prospects should make a fearsome top line in 5-6 seasons and make up part of Minnesota’s core. That leaves two spots for Boruvka Bananak, Stirling MacTavish, CT Carragher, Thicc Cheezy, Shouta Aizawa and Jack Kennedy. Kennedy and Aizawa are regressing hard, so they’ll be exposed. Bananak at nearly 1000 TPE should be a serviceable third liner for the next season or two while MIN continues to rebuild, so she gets protected. Cheezy is slightly behind the development of MacT and Carragher so he gets exposed. I ended up protecting MacTavish thanks to his 15 faceoffs, meaning he could be a faceoff specialist on the third line for the Chiefs. This final spot could come down to whether or not they can convince either player to resume their training and get their development back on track.

Defense for the Chiefs also has some no-brainers, as Mathias Seger has shown he is an elite defensive talent for many seasons now. However, he is on an island when it comes to Minnesota’s defence, which one can argue is the league’s worst. The next closest thing to a lock is the sub-1000 TPE Noah Tedla, who as an S48, is at least a couple seasons away from regression. S53s Ben Van Dijk has seen his commitment to the game fade over recent seasons, but at 438 TPE is Minnesota’s best defenseman prospect that may be at risk of being selected as S54 Klompus, Jutila, and Snail are all auto protected. The last protection comes down to S39 Emond, S46 Karlsson, S48 Haley Knight, and S49 Mikas Bieksa. As Karlsson is the only one over 850 TPE, Minnesota should hope he can continue being a serviceable third pair defenceman as he begins to enter regression.

Tegernako, as one of the league’s best young goaltenders, easily takes the goalie protection slot.

New Orleans Specters

For New Orleans it is a lot easier for them than other teams. For forwards they have 7 people that are definitely locks, as they are all active and updating, unfortunately that means leaving someone like Nicolaj Muller(their latest addition) and Darnell Johnson unprotected, both that are  still updating and active, and on a nice long term deal. What I could see is them leaving someone else unprotected, but I don't really know who it would be. On the defense I protected Lyle Odelein III, Kaspars Claude, Rex Kirkby, and Darnell Johnson. Leaving  Demaricus Smyth, and Charlie Serpe unprotected.  Serpe is a 1300 defenseman on S47, and with his past antics and low TPE heading closer to regression I don't see an expansion team taking him which would likely result in him waiving his NMC, as well with Demaricus Smyth who is also getting deeper into regression. On the goalie side I chose Aleister Cain over Olli Saarinen Jr, as Cain still has a lot of seasons left in the tank.

San Francisco Pride

San Francisco is in an excellent spot for expansion, being able to protect all but a couple active players. The two they likely have to expose are older (Jack Tanner, S37) or playing smaller roles on the team (Geezus Kryyst). They get to sit back and laugh at the other teams who lose important players for the future.

Tampa Bay Barracuda

Tampa is in a hilariously good spot for expansion, most of their prospects are younger than S53, to the point where they can basically protect everyone active and then some. Semi actives like Mega Tron and Frederick Wanesly round out the forward protections, and only two high earning defenseman allows for the protection of fantasy stud Liam O’Callagan. Benjamin Blue’s impending retirement makes any doubt of protecting Huuveri null and void as well. The protection list as a whole is fairly easy to determine assuming none of the inactives like Al Kayhall return.

Texas Renegades

Texas is in an interesting position, having to not protect some good young players. For The forward core I think I made the right decisions on each, leaving players like Czerkawsi, Potts, and Sulfurgold unprotected. Czerkawsi is getting old and in regression so I think TEX would hope they wouldnt take him.  Its hard to put Potts and Sulfurgold on unprotected because they are good young players, but I couldnt find the room to push people out of it. On defense I kept the core of Horvat, Brusky, Leppanen, and Scianna protected, leaving the young player of O’shea unprotected. And then on goalie it only makes sense of protecting Goodman and leaving Niedderrieter unprotected.

Toronto North Stars

TOR is in a good spot in terms of the expansion draft/protection lists. All of their prospects still in the J are S54 or later and not required to be protected, and all of their S53 players are already on the roster - therefore already taken into consideration. For starters, goalie is a no brainer. They have the highest TPE goalie in the league with Carpet at 1774 TPE, who’s still a season away from regression. The 4 defensive spots are also relatively straightforward, they’ll be protecting their future 1st pairing of S53 guys Kanoff and GM Meszaros, as well as their current two highest TPE defenseman, co-GM Zimmermann and newly acquired Fudgeson. For forwards, S47 Zadina will likely be exposed, as he’s the ‘oldest’ skater on their roster, and is starting to get passed by in TPE by guys many seasons younger than him.

The only real mystery I see with TOR’s protection list will come down to the last forward exposed, likely between Johansson (S53, 736 TPE), Last-Name (S50, 874 TPE), and Lee (S52, 991 TPE). Johansson has the lowest TPE among their forward group, but he’s an S53 player with plenty of time to continue to earn, and additionally he was an undrafted free agent in the S53 class, so his raw TPE totals aren’t indicative of his actual earning rate, and for that reason I think he’ll safely make the protection list. The harder decision will come down to Lee vs. Last-Name. The only thing making this a complicated choice is Lee’s pending UFA status at the end of this season. In terms of raw talent, Lee is the clear choice at 100+ TPE more and 2 seasons younger than Last-Name. But without knowing what goes on in the TOR locker room, or if Lee has expressed a desire to test free agency or sign somewhere else this offseason, it’s tough to say on the outside how that will affect the protection lists. Since that part of it is just guess work, all I can do is make a protection list based on building the best roster with my limited inside information, so for me that protects Lee and looks like:

Protected
S53 - Taylor Johansson (F, 736 TPE)
S48 - Mika Kandinsky (F, 1599 TPE)
S50 - Bobby Lane (F, 1365 TPE)
S52 - Danny Marston (F, 907 TPE)
S52 - Rhys Pritchard (F, 1004 TPE)
S52 - Keith Lee (F, 991 TPE)
S51 - Ruslan Zaporozhets (F, 1025 TPE)
S50 - Ursin Zimmerman (D, 1132 TPE)
S49 - Delver Fudgeson (D, 1123 TPE)
S53 - Jack Kanoff (D, 841 TPE)
S53 - Axel Meszaros (D, 791 TPE)
S47 - Harry Carpet (G, 1774 TPE)

Unprotected
S50 - First-Name Last-Name (F, 874 TPE)
S47 - Filip Zadina (F, 941 TPE)
S50 - Daniel Kuster (D, 644 TPE)
S49 - Cal Clucker (D, 598 TPE)
S50 - Monty Montgomery (G, 173 TPE)

Winnipeg Jets

Like TOR, the Jets have no prospects they need to worry about protecting in the J since they’re all S54 or younger, so all of their protection/exposed list is focused around their current SHL roster. Aside from not knowing what goes on in the locker room and the team dynamic/chemistry, their forward protection list looks pretty straightforward from a TPE point of view. Pending UFA and inactive forward Nathan Explosion will likely be on the exposed list, and it seems like he may be joined by S43 forward Ignatius Blunt, who’s a few seasons into regression and his 916 TPE is starting to be caught up by S52 Bale and S53 Sutherland. The defensive protection list is where it gets trickier, and in the end they’ll likely be exposing a great defenseman they would rather not lose. The only clear cut defenseman on the exposed list will be the inactive, pending UFA Whacker. To start on the protection list, the almost 2K TPE McScruff is their 2nd highest TPE player on the roster, and on a friendly long term $5M contract. Next, the Jets have an impressive selection of young defenders all among the top of their class at earning: 3rd best earner of the talented S53 class, Liljestrom, best earner of the S50 class, Adam Barron, and 2nd best earner of the S51 class, Ibrahimovic Jr. That would leave S48, 1327 TPE Satoshi Zizagooney as the last one on the exposed list. Depending on when WPG wants to establish their window of max competitiveness, maybe they protect Zizagooney and his 1300+ TPE, but I think in my list I expose him, hoping that a) his $7M cap hit for next season scares the expansion teams away, or b) if he does get picked up, they can use that $7M to go after a free agent to replace him. Goalie is once again a no brainer with protecting Chamberlain. Final list looks like this:

Protected
S52 - Bale (F, 860 TPE)
S43 - Goku Muerto (F, 1625 TPE)
S46 - Nick Brain (F, 2040 TPE)
S46 - Commander Shepard (F, 1866 TPE)
S46 - Yoshimitsu McCloud (F, 1267 TPE)
S48 - Calogero Crudelli (F, 1375 TPE)
S53 - Reid Sutherland (F, 835 TPE)
S45 - Slip McScruff (D, 1941 TPE)
S50 - Adam Barron (D, 1375 TPE)
S51 - Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. (D, 1146 TPE)
S53 - Magnus Liljestrom (D, 840 TPE)
S52 - Strom Chamberlain (G, 967 TPE)
Unprotected
S43 - Ignatius Blunt (F, 916 TPE)
S46 - Nathan Explosion (F, 1183 TPE)
S48 - Satoshi Zizagooney (D, 1327 TPE)
