S55 SMJHL PT #5 - Race for the Cup
#46

In a close fought battle with the St Louis Scarecrows, Vancouver emerged victorious in a four game sweep much tighter than it looked. Vancouver's real key to success was a huge performance from the third line. Rookie center Rikki Petrov put up a team-leading 5 points in four games, supporting fellow rookie Valtterri Kauppinen's team-leading 3 goals. Veteran linemate Luffy Richard supported with 2 goals, 2 assists, and a forward group leading 9 hits.

In a supporting role, Vancouver's second line dominated possession. Centerman IV, Basher, and Desrouleaux all led the team with a dominant combined 63 CF% and CF% relatives over 13.5. With PDOs under 100, the second line held shots against per 60 to a staggering sub-16. Dee Centerman IV currently leads the entire league in postseason shots against per 60. With the team's top unit running as expected throughout the season, these huge step-up depth performances from the defensively responsible second line and the popping off third line solidified a sweep for the Whalers.

So, that happened. The Battleborn were swept by the Knights in the first round of the SMJHL playoffs. This was not a great surprise for many who predicted the playoffs ahead of time; few thought we'd win a game. As a team, however, we absolutely thought we might be able to sneak a game or two, so it's a bit of a bitter taste in our mouths that we were unable to do so. What it really came down to at the end of the day was that while as a team, we constantly improved and made clear strides during the second half of the season, this is still an expansion team in its first season, one that usually ends up being stupidly hard for whichever team just entered the league. We faced an excellent Knights team that finished second in the Western Conference and were only 3 points behind the Armada from being tied for being the number one seed in the entire conference. So, yes, it was hard to see us go down like that, and it wasn't too surprising for those on the outside, but we are still confident that this was merely a case of us not being ready in the first season of a team's existence (few expansion teams are this early). What we do know and promise is that we will continue to work hard to ensure such a similar result does not occur next season.

The Outlaws this season definitely did not meet the expectations we set before it started. We were red hot in the beginning, but seemed to fizzle off towards the end and took on a very close matchup in the playoffs. This first season of mine was a lot of fun, and although it did not end the way us Outlaws thought it would, I still am happy to be on this fantastic team. The regular season sims were not the greatest to us as we fell down the standings, and then in the playoffs we just could not get on our feet. Although we were in a great position in the playoffs, it seemed our defensive woes could not get us the wins we needed. Our offense from the regular season carried over, avoiding being shutout the entire series, but our defense letting up double digit goals is where we were hit big time. As much firepower we had going towards the opposing net, we just could not keep the puck out of our own goal to save our lives. Going into next season, it seems that upgrading our defense seems to be a priority so we can get ourselves in a better position for our next run.

The Detroit Falcons are a young team. After years of success the team comes to a crossroads in their history where they know they have to rebuild. In the S55 SMJHL draft they had two firsts where they were able to pick up a hopeful future franchise forward and defenseman in Yngve Simonsson and Evangelos Giannopoulos, along with several other great selections in later rounds. As well the S55 crop is strong for the team. But this means there are learning experiences that come along with it that the team learns along the way. The series with Maine was no exception.

The team learned how hard it is to fight in the playoffs and how one lapse in concentration or one missed clear of the zone can lead to you getting swept out of a series. 2 of the 4 games they played were decided by 1 goal, and a 3rd was decided by 1 goal and an empty netter. These are close hard fought games that if a bounce goes another way during them the Falcons are up 3-1 in the series. This is what Detroit learned, is that in the regular season not every second matters. But in the playoffs you don't let your foot off the gas. You keep it to the metal and never take a shift off. Detroit will come into the next playoffs hungry with this mindset

The Detroit Falcons weren't expected to do much of anything in playoffs, of course, considering their frankly pitiful regular season, but being swept and, unfortunately, losing many of their key players to call ups next season marks their next season as even bleaker than this one. The team proved simply incapable of dealing with every aspect of the Timber, from being unable to break down their defense to being incapable of stopping their scoring. Goaltender Thor Odinsson was unfortunately left out to dry by his defenders a few too many times, and despite his best efforts could not save them from their own mistakes. For future success, the Falcons must find a way to score. Simple as that. While the defense let their goaltender down, the larger and ever present problem was scoring. No one on the team seemed capable of answering the Timber's big guns, and as a result when the time came, the Timber easily ran over the Falcons.

For the first round, the Kelowna Knights were pitched against the Nevada Battleborn. Trough the season, the Battleborn teached everyone that even if it was their first season, they could surprise any teams. But in a best of 7, it's not the luck that can get you the victory. The Knights were a new teams against them, doing their best to stay out of the box and the big cannons of the Knights were enough to pass trough the first round. If the Knight want to continue their success in the offseason, they need to continue to stay out of that punition box like they did against the Battleborn. But, they will need more from key players if they want to be able to beat Colorado and pass to the next stage. Their top players did great against Nevada but they will also need the help of their deep players. They will also need Peter Ramsey to up his game, they will need more than an ordinary goalie to beat the Raptors.

For the Kelowna Knights in round 1, it's hard to say anything went wrong with the team. We were able to go out there and sweep the Nevada Battleborn. Anytime you can end a series in 4, and do it in dominating fashion like the Knights did, there's a lot of reason to celebrate and enjoy the first round. After winning the first game 3-2, Kelowna was able to go out and shutout the Battleborn. After a hard fought first game, Nevada could've evened it up going into game 2, but they were silenced by Peter Ramsey as the Knights would take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. After game 2, Kelowna and Nevada battled it out, but 5 goals proved to be too much for Nevada, and they saw the series slipping away now down 3-0. In game 4, the Battleborn had it close and could have won for a while, but in period 3 Kelowna blew the doors open and went up 6-2, an insurmountable late game lead that saw them bring the brooms out and complete the sweep.
