Taking a look at the S55 Draft Class so Far
#1

With the regular season concluding I figured now would be the time to look back at how the first 2 rounds of the S55 SHL draft class has faired after almost a season after getting drafted to the SHL. I’ll be taking a look at both the TPE earned and their performances during the season. I’ll also throw in my two cents for anyone who wants my opinion.

Round 1

1. pride San Francisco Pride - Rikard Bjerg 464 TPE

Bjerg has lived up to the hype of being a first overall pick. With 464 TPE he is earning just about any point he can get. In 50 games this season he has shown his offensive prowess with 5 goals, 9 assists for 14 points. He is no slouch on the defensive side either with 65 hits and 66 shots blocked. The only part of his game that can be improved upon is his giveaways with 34 to 17 takeaways. However there is very little to complain about with Bjerg, and the Pride should be happy with this pick.

2. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Colin Lambert 473 TPE

Lambert was considered by many to go first overall by many and its easy to see why. With 473 TPE he has been on fire nabbing every possible point. This season Lampert has been a force with the Scarecrows. In 50 games he has 8 goals, 19 assists for 27 points. With 37 Hits and 59 shots blocked show he isn’t just an offensive defensemen. 14 giveaways to 13 takeaways is a good ratio as well. There are just about no holes in Lamberts game, and at the pace he is going, this is exactly the pick Tampa needed to help with their rebuild.

3. Stars Toronto North Stars - Ryu Jones 448 TPE

Ryu is the first winger to be taken off the board. With 448 TPE he has been solid with his TPE earning. In 50 games the winger has a solid 10 goals, 19 points for 29 points. His defensive abilities are also impressive with 52 hits and 30 shots blocked. With 16 giveaways to 19 takeaways show that he is not one to cough the puck up. Overall Toronto nabbed an excellent player at the third pick.

4. Specters New Orleans Specters - Connor Hutton 465 TPE

Hutton is another defensemen that has met the expectations placed upon him when he was drafted 4th overall. With 465 TPE he has been earning as much as he can. This season he has 8 goals, 12 assists for 20 points. On the defensive side he has been excellent with 60 hits and 61 shots blocked. With him taking a lot of risks he has 34 giveaways to 17 takeaways. Overall Hutton has been solid this season, and looks to be a stud for seasons to come.

5. Renegades Texas Renegades - Theo Kondos 467 TPE

With the last of the Top 5 picks Kondos comes in with 467 TPE, showing that honestly any one of the first 5 players selected could have been picked in any order. Kondos has been working hard getting as much TPE as possible, just as the previous 4 picks have. This season, he has shown off his scoring touch with 13 goals, 16 assists for 29 points. Theo has also chipped in defensively with 35 hits and 17 shots blocked. He handled the puck extremely well with 13 giveaways to 19 takeaways. Overall Texas has to be happy with nabbing Kondos at 5.

6. Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Teddy Park 436 TPE

Coming in at sixth we have Park at 436 TPE. He has also gotten been working hard grabbing every PT to catch up to the prospects around him. This season Park has been excellent with 7 goals, 17 assists for 24 points. Defensively Teddy has 81 hits and 47 shots blocked. With 27 giveaways and 26 takeaways Park takes risks, but more then makes up for them with his play. At sixth, the Platoon picked up a solid defensemen for the future.

7. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs - Devin Basher 461 TPE

Coming in at seven is Basher with 461 TPE, which shows everyone that he can be a top player in this league. This season Basher has 2 goals and 19 assists, for 21 points. While his offensive output is good its his defensive output that really shines. With 22 hits and a whopping 70 shots blocked, Basher has been laying out on the ice. With 15 giveaways to 25 takeaways Devin has been one of the premier defensive forwards this season. At 7 the Chiefs have done extremely well to select Basher.

8. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Alexander Oscarsson 458 TPE

At eighth we have Oscarsson with 458 TPE. Oscarsson has also kept up with all TPE opportunities. In 50 games this season the winger as been excellent in the offensive zone with 17 goals, 20 assists for 37 points. With such an offensive output his defensive stats may not look s impressive, but are still valuable. With 11 hits and 44 shots blocked, he is the furthest thing from a defensive liability. With 17 giveaways and 15 takeaways, his puck handling and passing has been sound. Overall this is another pick where the team has to be happy with the pick they made.

9. Dragons Calgary Dragons - Chris Goodname 426 TPE

Goodname comes in rocking a solid 426 TPE. Many had Goodname being drafted in the 2nd round, but so far he has lived up to his draft position. This season he has a respectable 2 goals and 16 assists for 18 points. Chris has done well on the defensive side as well with 52 hits and 36 shots blocked. With 23 takeaways to 19 giveaways he has been a core contributor to the Knights defensive core. While at the time it seemed like a bit of a reach, Goodname has proven to Calgary that they made a solid choice.

10. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - Axel Foley 468 TPE

The 6’03” defensemen Axel Foley comes in at the 10th pick. Once again with 468 TPE he shows that he has not been slacking when it comes to his development. With the Kraken this season Foley has 5 goals and 20 assists for 25 points. While the offensive output has been excellent so has his defence. With 53 hits and 24 shots blocked he has been a rock for that defensive core. With 15 giveaways to 22 takeaways he shows a high level of poise and discipline with the puck. The Kraken loves the production, and the Blizzard have to be happy with Foley’s development.

11. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Guðmundur Kristjánsson 438 TPE

Kristjánsson comes in at eleventh overall pick. With a solid 438 TPE his development has been on par with the rest of the first rounders. This season Kristjánsson has 7 goals with 28 assists for 35 points. With his offensive output being excellent he has not been called on to produce much on the defensive side. With 10 hits and 18 shots blocked he has not been called upon in many defensive situations. With 22 giveaways to 12 takeaways Kristjánsson likes to take risks and play fast and loose. Normally this may be an issue, but with his offensive output it’s seen more as a necessary evil. Overall Kristjánsson has been an offensive machine this season, and the Wolfpack have to be happy with their pickup.

12. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Igor Victory 425 TPE

Coming in a the tail end of the first round is Igor Victory. Coming in with 425 TPE, his development has been a little slower than the other top picks, but still on par with what is expected from a first round pick. While with Anchorage, Igor has score 5 goals, along with 7 assists for 12 points. While his offensive output is a little underwhelming, it's his defensive game that shines. With 59 hits and 68 shots blocked he has been excellent in his own zone. Add on 17 giveaways to 21 takeaways and Igor makes sure that his team has every chance to secure victory. Overall Victory has the potential to be one of the best shutdown defensemen in this league, adding to Tampa’s loaded prospect pool.

13. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - Terrence "Big Terry" Smith 444 TPE

Smith comes in at thirteen. With 444 TPE Smith has been doing everything in his power to continue his progress as a stud defensemen. In 50 games with the Raptors the high scoring defensemen has 7 goals and 11 assists for 18 points. On the defensive side Terrence as been dependable with 59 hits and 67 shots blocked. With 20 giveaways to 30 takeaways Smith has been as dependable s they come with the puck. The Blizzard have so far nailed their picks and the team should be exited for what’s to come.

14. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Jöörgüštrâäd DuBølk 444 TPE

Next is the 6’08” giant Jöörgüštrâäd. The swede as excelled in his development grabbing 444 TPE. In 50 games this season Jöörgüštrâäd has 5 goals and 9 assists for 14 points. While his offensive output leaves something to be desired his defensive output has been on another level. With 39 hits and 64 shots blocked Jöörgüštrâäd has been a pain for opposing offences all season. Add 19 giveaways to 34 takeaways DuBølk is becoming an immovable wall. Another pick and another top prospect for the rebuild.

15. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Ryan Rieley 436 TPE

Nearing the end of the first round we have the goalscorer Ryan Rieley. At 436 TPE Rieley has been steady in his development. This season with the Citadel the winger has 12 goals and 7 assists for 19 points. With his scoring ability one would expect him to be a bit of a defensive liability but that’s not the case. The power forward has 109 hits and 17 shots blocked. Unfortunately his style does lend to a few high risk plays. This is shown with his 35 giveaways to 11 takeaways. Despite this the Wolfpack had a very successful first round and a big reason for that is Rieley.

16. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Adrik Baranov 412 TPE

Rounding out the first round is left defensemen Baranov. With 412 TPE he has the lowest total out of all the first rounders, but that does not mean Adrik hasn’t been keeping up development wise. While with the Timber this season he has 7 goals and 14 assists for 21 points. On the defensive side Adrik has 40 hits and 16 shots blocked. With 22 giveaways to 11 takeaways it’s clear that Baranov leans into his offensive production. The Barracuda had a huge haul in this round, and are looking good for the future.

Overall each player in the first round has lived up to the expectations placed upon them when they were drafted in the top 16. Next, we’ll take a look at the second round and see if the teams hit on these picks as well.

Round 2

17. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - TURG TURG 418 TPE

Starting the second round off is the man born somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, TURG TURG. So far his development has been outstanding for a top second round pick racking in 418 TPE. This season with the Armada TURG has 14 goals, 23 assists for 37 points. With such an offensive output, it is even more impressive that he has kept up with his defensive responsibilities. With 67 hits and 58 shots blocked TURG has been one of the best two-way forwards this season. With 23 giveaways to 18 takeaways TURG has shown that he has the potential to be an excellent top 6 forward in this league. Once again Tampa Bay hit the nail on the head with this pick.

18. Stars Toronto North Stars - Liam Slate 472 TPE

Coming in at 18 is Liam State with some of the highest TPE in this draft class. At the time there were questions about his commitment to his development, which caused him to fall in the draft. It’s safe to say that so far he has silenced any doubters so far. In 50 games with Newfoundland the winger scored 14 goals with 20 apples for 34 points. The offensive specialist doesn’t provide much in defensive utility with 26 hits and 6 shots blocked. Add in 29 giveaways to 15 takeaways. Slate may not be able to help out in his own zone, but is about as terrifying as it comes in his opponents. Overall Toronto hit a home run with Slate.

19. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Lonnie O’Donoghue 354 TPE

With their first of the draft the Steelhawks picked up O’Donoghue. So far his development has slowed down as the season comes to a close, but he still has time to catch up. This season with Vancouver O’Donoghue has 4 goals with 11 assists for 15 points. On the defensive side he has 45 hits and 40 shots blocked. With 32 giveaways to 29 takeaways it has been a slightly disappointing season, however Lonnie still has the opportunity to improve next season. Overall the Steelhawks may have to be more patient with Lonnie than with other second round picks.

20. Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Lord Raiden 431 TPE

The platoon picked up the talented Lord Raiden at number 20. So far his development has been on par with many of the top picks of the draft. This season with the Raptors that offensively gifted centre has 14 goals with 25 assists for 39 points. On the defensive side he has 65 hits to 32 shots blocked. Along with 19 giveaways to 10 takeaways its clear Raiden’s talents lean heavily toward offence. With the skill he has demonstrated so far Raiden has the potential to be a staple for the Platoon’s offence for seasons to come.

21. Jets Winnipeg Jets - Zakkira Diporov 406 TPE

The Jets pick up some offence with Diporov. The physical winger has been slow and steady when it comes to his development, but continues to improve. With Detroit this season the power forward has 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points. While his offence leaves something to be desired, his defensive output more than makes up for it. With 119 hits and 42 shots blocked Diporov has been a stalwart on the defensive side of the puck. With 17 giveaways to 12 takeaways Diporov does take too many risks with the puck. Overall Diporov is a solid pickup for the second round.

22. pride San Francisco Pride - Walton Stromberg 436 TPE

The Pride pick up a playmaking centre in Walton Stromberg. With 436 TPE Stromberg has been on par with the rest of the draft class. In 50 games Walton has 6 goals and 25 assists for 31 points. With this offensive output Stromberg has been solid defensively. With 27 hits and 64 shots blocked Walton has shown to be quite a team player. Add on 21 giveaways to 24 takeaways and Stromberg is rarely the reason for any defensive lapses. The Pride have to be over the moon with Stromberg’s development.

23. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Pavel Kharlamov 379 TPE

The Barracuda picked up another offensive weapon in Kharlamov. While Kharlamov had a head start in his development he has since slowed down significantly since being drafted. Despite this Kharlamov can still improve after a slow season. In 50 games the winger has picked up 9 goals and 12 assists for a total of 21 points. On the defensive side he has picked up 83 hits and 39 shots blocked. His defensive abilities also extends to his takeaways with 18 to 13 giveaways. Overall this season statistically has been exactly what the Scarecrows were looking for, but Tampa Bay may be starting to worry about Kharlamov. Time will tell if Pavel comes into his own.

24. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Jesse Seppanen 360 TPE

With back to back picks the Barracuda picks up another winger in Seppanen. Much like Kharlamov, Seppanen had excellent start to his development before the draft, but has slowed down as the season comes to a close. This season Jesse has picked up 10 goals and 9 assists 19 points. With 40 hits and 30 shots blocked Seppanen has done well in both zones. Seppanen likes to play fast and loose with the puck with 23 giveaways and 14 takeaways. Despite having an excellent first round, Tampa hasn’t struck gold with these last 2 picks. Time will tell if Seppanen becomes the winger they saw.

25. syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Lassi Suhonen 407 TPE

With the middle of the second round comes the skilled forward Lassi Suhonen. So far Suhonen has been working steadily in his TPE gain. This season with Newfoundland the centre has 6 goals and 14 assists for 20 points. On the defensive side he has 29 hits and 22 shots blocked. Lassi doesn’t cough the puck up much as he has 20 giveaways to 19 takeaways. So far Lassi has been as advertised, making him an excellent pick up at 25.

26. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs - Alex Marshall 449 TPE

Alex Marshall is next on the list. The winger has been on top of both his game and development. With 449 TPE Marshall has shown everyone so far that he wants to be one of the best. In 50 games Alex has 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points. On the defensive side the bruising winger has 113 hits with 10 shots blocked. However he does have a penchant for coughing the puck up with 24 giveaways to no takeaways. Aside from the giveaways Marshall has one of the brightest futures in the SMJHL.

27. pride San Francisco Pride - Nicolae Andrescu 411 TPE

The Pride picked up the first goaltender off the board with Andrescu and should be happy with that pick. So far Nicolae has been solid at earning TPE with 411. With the Scarecrows this season Andrescu has a 16-25-3 record with a 0.894 save percentage and 3.22 GAA. Andrescu’s numbers suggest that Nicolae and the Crows have struggled this season. Overall Andrescu has shown that he has the potential to be a starter, and help the Pride rebuild.

28. Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Daniil Nikiforov 439 TPE

With the latter half of the 2nd round comes Nikiforov. Daniil has been grabbing every available TPE, and shows no signs of slowing down. This season with Vancouver the centre has 18 goals and 21 points for 39 points. For such offensive output one would be given a pass on the defensive side. However Nikiforov has also been excellent in his own end. With 33 hits and 60 shots Nikiforov has been a force defensively. With 14 giveaways and 23 takeaways Daniil has been careful with the puck on his stick. Overall Nikiforov has been a star on a struggling Whalers team.

29. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Leonids Balzams 378 TPE

Coming in at 29 is the stay at home defensemen Leonids Balzams. HIs development stalled out near the beginning of his career, but has managed to turn in around this season. With the BattleBorn this season he has 1 goal and 10 assists for 11 points. With lacklustre numbers offensively he makes up for it defensively. With 64 hits and 55 shots blocked Balzams has been steady in his own zone. Leonids doesn’t cough up the puck much with 17 giveaways to to 29 takeaways. Overall Balzams has been what you would expect from a project defensemen.

30. Dragons Calgary Dragons - Mack Daddy 464 TPE

The skilled Mack Daddy is next with a ton of TPE. At 464 Mack has been working hard on racking in as many points as he can. This season with Colorado he has scored 10 goals with 18 assists for 28 points. On the defensive side Mack hasn’t contributed much with 45 hits and 9 shots blocked. With his offensive gifts come a lot of risks taken. It shows with 28 giveaways to 9 takeaways. Despite this Mack Daddy has the potential to be a solid top 6 forward for Calgary for the next 10 seasons.

31. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Jason Desrouleaux 394 TPE

Coming in near the end of the second round is Desrouleaux. His development has stalled out this season has he has not updated over the past month. However if he does start to update soon he will not be too far behind his peers. This season the goal scorer has 16 goals and 7 assists for 23 points. On the defensive side Jason has only produced 26 hits and 34 shots blocked. His game does involve a lot of risky plays and it shows with 27 giveaways to 13 takeaways. Overall Desrouleaux has had a solid season, but his development has stalled. We will see if he picks it up again or if this is Jason’s peak.

32. Specters New Orleans Specters - Sven Gunnar 380 TPE

Rounding out the 2nd round is the Citadel centre Sven Gunnar. Coming in with 380 TPE he has been slow and steady with his development. With Quebec City he has 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points. On the defensive side Gunnar has 19 hits and 42 shots blocked. His puck handling has been ok with 37 giveaways to 33 takeaways. It seems like the Specters will have to be patient with Gunnar, but if his development continues, their patience will be rewarded.

Overall with these first 2 rounds have a lot of solid prospects. Usually in most drafts after a season you can see quite a few prospects tail off and disappear, but this isn’t the case with the S55 draft. We will have to wait a couple more seasons to see if this tread continues. But so far this class as been quite active and has a chance at being one of the best. I may have only covered the first 2 rounds, but there is also a lot of talent in the later rounds that I didn’t cover. So kudos to the other members in this draft for showing how deep it truly is, and the potential it has.

Thanks for the kind words! Excited to be in such a deep draft class. Initially was a bit down I went so late in this draft but feel good about where I am right now. Landed on two chill teams with this player.
