S56 PT #4 - HOF Snub
#16

Out of all SHL players up for nomination, one name stands out for having been disrespected for a while despite being on the ballot: Alex Light. Light is second in points out of players available to make it into the hall (behind Trevor Wilson who played 2 more seasons), having scored 726 in an outstanding career. For reference, that's more than players like Chris York, Dani Forsberg, and Benjamin Wong who all made it into the HOF easily. Light was one of the best forwards in the SHL at his peak, with his best season being a 55 point year in S42. Light was dynamite at even strength too, as he scored all but 155 points at even strength, and was consistent as they come, scoring at least 35 points from S37 to S50 (that's a 13 season streak which is nothing to scoff at). Throw in the multiple Challenge Cups he won with the West Kendall Platoon (where he spent his entire career) and his 5 Mathias Chouinard wins, and Light should be a shoo-in for the Hall.

Lets talk about the most underrated player ever in the Simulation Hockey League and that is former Juniors Finals MVP, the greatest of them all in the Juniors pretty much, Iam Essellemm. Lets take a journey through his career, where he was drafted by the Texas Renegades 3rd overall. This was a surprise to a lot of people because he was a first gen (and wound up being the top first gen taken) and people had a little bit of concerns over his longevity, but Iam Essellemm played a crucial role on the Renegades for a long time and was a top level goal scorer. He helped the Renegades break their lack of success and make it all the way to finals including being part of one of the best lines ever along with the MVP. Then they moved him to Hamilton where he was a goal scorer on the most controversial team in recent SHL history. This alone makes him a great story and worthy of the HOF especially when you look at his stats. He's a monster.

Cameron Carter II belongs and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Retired player? Check. Not currently in the Hall of Fame? Double check. Cop out answer? Triple check. While some may argue, Slim, what if you win, wouldn't it be weird? No sorry, references aside, they'd ask if this counts. Cameron Carter II absolutely counts for this topic as they qualify as retired, because for them to unretire they would take the 15% TPE penalty. When people talk about them today they won't say "Cameron Carter II, the currently unretired player.", No they'll say "Holy shit Cameron Carter II retired." As in, Cameron Carter Ii is a retired player now. With such an illustrious, fantastic, magnificent, historical, and amazing career, Cameron Carter II deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. This is especially compounded by the fact that Cameron Carter II is a retired player who is not in the Hall of Fame.

In terms of Hall of Fame goalies, there are plenty of names that top the list of inductees:  Michael McFadden, Mike Honcho and Ryan Jesster to name a few.  One name that isn't on the Hall of Fame list that absolutely should be on there is Mikke Laukkanen.

Laukkanen was a career Wolf in New England, ranging from Season 30 to Season 44 and in their career has had more total seasons played, more games played, more wins and even more shutouts than two of the previously mentioned Hall of Famers.  The fact that such a career, one of seven goalies to break the 600 game mark even, isn't already in the hall of fame is a travesty and it would behoove the SHL Hall of Fame committee to resolve that as soon as possible.  I know that if Strom ever has such a long career like that, even without any championships, I would be pretty upset of others were able to get in with having done less.

Justice for Mikke!

I've decided to look into which goalies are currently not in the hall of fame which should be. After doing a quick scan of all goalies not in the hall I was shocked to see Mikke Laukkanen was not voted in. Laukkanen played 15 seasons, majority of which was played with the New England Wolfpack. Mikke was in the running twice for best goalie, won rookie of the year in S31and was also nominated for playoff MVP in S42. Laukkanen is 7th all time for the winningest goalie in SHL history and also is 7th in most games played. He is currently 9th all time in shutouts with 39. Mikke is the winningest goalie in NEW history and also managed to secure 3 Challenge Cups with New England. Has to be frustrating when all goalies around you in terms seasons played and wins was able to lock up a hall of fame spot but Mikke was sadly left out. #LetLaukkanenIn

Looking through the spreadsheet from look there are a lot of scorers that have an impressive amount of points but don't seem to be in the HOF for one reason or another. One player that really surprised me was Alex Light, but I want to touch on a different player in this list.

Teemu Nurmi, one of Buster's old players, missed out on a Hall of Fame entry due to user error. That's right, in the final year of his eligibility which was anticipated would be his entry into the Hall, then-commissioner Spangle left Nurmi off the ballot. Despite this being told to the Hall of Fame committee, there was no correction made and no consideration given to Nurmi as a result. This blunder resulted in Buster not getting inducted into the Hall.

Nurmi was a great defenseman for his era. 337 points in his 12 seasons was fairly impressive however there may have been some stats like his career -29 that resulted in him falling to the final ballot. It's likely this player would be in the Hall of Fame right now but there wasn't even a chance given as he was left off the ballot. Sad.

There are some big names I see on that list that have a strong case to be in the hall, but the one that jumps out to me is Zander Rhys. In his prime he was arguably the driving force of the Toronto North Stars blue line and played a big part in their first and only Challenge Cup in season 35. While he did become a bit of a journeyman in his regression years he managed to rack up 641 points as defenseman which ranks him 10th all time among defenders. He never managed to win any individual awards, outside of the Jesster, but he received 3 nominations for Stevens and 1 nomination for the Biscuit and these weren't pity nominations as he finished his career with 2 1st team all stars, 2 2nd team all stars and 1 3rd team all star. He has the cup, the points and a productive prime, but always fell just short of individual awards. Regardless I think he's more than deserving of a place in the hall.

Thanks for the sig ragnar!

Don't even start to overthink this. It's damn obvious and you should all be ashamed for not noticing sooner. Mikke Laukkanen should be in the HOF and it's not even remotely up for debate. His campaign is hampered only by his games player and even then who gives a toss if he's "only" played 603 games. His win-loss ratio is better than some nominees/inductees, he's had fewer goals scored on him than some inductees with similar games, only 31 goals more than Tommy Tuck who had 23 fewer games played. I mean that's really just semantics at that point. My working theory at the moment is that Mikke Laukkanen has stolen the lunch money of the HOF committee one too many times and, as a result, has been heavily snubbed. It's the only explanation really because there's no other reason the man shouldn't be entrenched firmly in the HOF. I'm over the word cap so I'd like to say I have no idea what "PSS" means and google has yielded no results so with that in mind I'm going to imagine it stands for "piss" and given that he pisses only 0.9 times per game that's quite a stat. The implication here is that he's gone several games without pissing for a below 1 stat. HOF bladder control.

When looking at players who made the Hall of Fame but probably shouldnt have, I flip flopped between Turd Ferguson and Mike O'Brien. I ultimately landed on the former as O'Brien had some award nominations to back him up and was a player you could use consistently. Ferguson on the other hand was a specialist that wasn't needed in the game. A bruising defenseman with no offense and no skating ability, made a name for himself by fighting and taking penalties while throwing big hits along the way. While this is all fine and dandy and something to point out as unique, it isn't Hall of Fame worthy. We don't like at John Scott and say that guy belongs in the Hall because he fights good. Looking at the overall landscape of the Hall of Fame, the committees have done a good job for the most part......Turd Ferguson and his career 39 points and -21 +/- is the one true stain on the Hall.

If you thought I wasn’t going to mention my own player being snubbed for HoF boy you were wrong. Alex Light, despite his lack of individual silverware, deserves to be in the Hall. Having spent his entire career with the West Kendall Platoon (now Baltimore Platoon), he retired with 900 games played and 726 points, a point per game total higher than a significant chunk of people in the hall around him. Having played with a group of players that all made it in (Zalleras Szlerchek, Bojo Biscuit, Beaujeaux Biscuit, Mikko Linna, Dani Forsberg, LKS), Alex Light was always in the shadow of a player on his team performing just a tiny bit better than him on a single season. And yet, Light has more points than most of them, through sheer consistency, as is shown by 15 consecutive seasons at 38 points or higher.

By the time Alex Light retired, he lifted 3 Challenge Cups, with 2 as team captain. He held team captaincy for 8 seasons, holds franchise records in multiple categories (goals, points, power play points to name a few). The only thing lacking for Light is individual silverware. Is he a Hall of Famer? Undoubtedly. Will he get into the Hall? I’m more and more doubtful of it as each season that passes, I have been getting less and less HoF ballot votes. And with big names becoming eligible in the near future, this coming off-season might be Light’s final chance at the Hall.

I have a few bones to pick with goalie stats and the way that sheet is set up. I really don't care about skaters because that's not my area of expertise or care. What I do wanna talk about (and I'm gonna use my PT space to do this) STOP USING WINS AND GAA AS A MEANS OF EVALUATING GOALIES FOR AWARDS AND THE HOF. Elect people for Sv% and their performance on cup winning teams, not how well the defense around them is, as well as their scoring. If a goalie gives up 3 goals a game on 27 shots but plays for a team that drops like 4-5 a game on their opponent then they will have a lot of wins but be a bad goalie. That being said, I do think Beaujeaux Biscuit should be in, however, and I do think that he will most likely be in given his position on the wins list.

I really do not feel like getting unconventional with this one, so I am going to say someone who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame immediately. Esa Anrikkanen is someone who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, without question. They have played 1,458 games which is pretty much the highest on the list while having 549 goals and 549 assists. I think that the most staggering thing is the +186. I know, there are people who have better stats, but I really like this guy and he should be in the Hall of Fame. The total points of 1,063 and blocking the 257 shots that he blocked, he was someone that was decent on both sides. I mean, I think there is no question that he should be in the Hall of Fame sooner than later. He averaged just about .72 points per game which is not the highest, I know, but he is one of the most prolific scorers on the list, if I say so myself.
