[SHN] S56 Rookie Race

Budget Director Weenie Hut Jr. GM I thought that I would be totally amped to do the rookie watch for this season with so many of my fellow draft classmates but unfortunately the time has truly passed us by. With many players having played 40 games already, the picture is starting to become clear as to who will be the clear favorites to win the Jesster this season. There were a few other things I want to give some time and light on just because it’s not just about the Jesster but the fact that this is an exciting time that each player can only do once in their SHL career. So here’s some stats and random notes about the S56 Rookie class!
Skaters
Goalies Breakdown To start, we have about 25 forwards, 9 defensemen and 2 goalies. Not sure how that compares to season’s past but it’s certainly a forward heavy group considering that there are only 33% more spots for forwards than there are for defensemen. If anything, with how valuable defensemen were seen this offseason, the demand for replacements included several inactive players ranging from 300 to 600 TPE making rosters, even playoff bound teams. I do remember the S53 class in particular, while a reddit class, having a clear cut 1st round selection of defensemen and the 6 that were drafted in the first round are all in the SHL as of this season. 4 of those 6 are rookies this season, another S53 rookie defenseman being the 3rd round, 34th overall selection Ben van Dijk also making his debut. The remaining 4 defensemen are of the S54 making the jump early. Only Manhattan, Toronto and Winnipeg are without rookies this season, having called up their S53 players already for last season. Rookie Power The teams who had the greatest number of rookies this season were Texas (5), Tampa (4), and Minnesota with (4). Technically Tampa gets the slight nod as Separa Borro is only a backup and could still technically be eligible for the Jesster next season, assuming he stays under the 18 games started. Credit to Texas who has long been seen as having a fantastic prospect pool and it’s clearly showing. Unlike some teams, they were able to rely on their pipeline to bring up extremely young defensemen, who while still very green, continue to get better making them less of a liability and more a contributor even for this season’s playoffs. Into the fire The rookies getting leaned on the heaviest by their teams looks to be Ambacas Cuddles with 25:16 average time on ice per game, and the Baltimore rookie duo of Valentin Kalashnikov (23:02) and Ethan Duncan (23:52). With this trio belonging to rebuilding teams, that makes sense to see them take on heavy roles right at the beginning. It would be nice if it was strictly powerplay and top minutes but they’ve also been tasked with defensive responsibilities. In Duncan’s case, spending 2:22 playing on the PK per game. Honorable mention to Sven Svenson (22:55) and Samat Beibitzhanov (36 starts out of 41 games) for also being tossed to the Wolves. To Beibitzhanov’s credit, he is the only S52 draft and did not break the 18 games started mark before this season. Still looking for their first… Unfortunately for Ben van Dijk, he’s the only remaining player in this rookie list looking to score their first SHL goal. With less than 10 minutes a game playing in heavily sheltered minutes, it’ll be interesting to see if it happens this season. Joseph Fantobens of the Renegades narrowly escaped being on this list, having just one goal and just scoring it very recently against the Atlanta Inferno in a 7-2 blowout. Kalashnikov, known for his heavy and hard style of play, has fought once but is recorded as a loss. Interestingly, Ambacas Cuddles is in the same boat with a 0-1 record in fights in his SHL career. All About the Man Advantage Ethan Price has a couple things going for him this season. For one, as one of maybe a handful of rookies on the top power play unit, he’s leading everybody by a wide margin with 4 goals, 7 assists just with the power play alone. To put that in perspective, that would put him even with Sven Svenson in points overall, whoof. Not only does Price help his team by making the opposition pay for costly penalties, he himself has been pretty squeaky clean with only a single minor penalty taken all season. Somebody should challenge him to a fight or something. Behind him is a 3 way tie with 2 minors with Patric Twist, Ryuuji Minamino and Kwame Dakari. Early Graduation The youngest player in the SHL right now is none other than Connor Hutton of the New Orleans Specters. He was only drafted almost 2 seasons ago and while I’m sure they have high hopes for them, I don’t think anybody was expecting to see him in the league for another season. So far so good for the former 4th overall pick, being tied for 2nd in points among defensmen. As for the S54 folks who went up after 3 seasons in the J, that list seems quite long including Guy LeGrande, Daniel Laforest, Kwame Dakari, Justin Keahi, Jack Klompus, Mikkel Asmus Sondergard, and Joseph Fantobens. One reason why we’re seeing such a huge dominance by the Western teams like Anaheim, Vancouver and Anchorage. The dominance of Carolina and Newfoundland have been hit hard with callups, some more than they were expecting. Kelowna accelerated their rebuild, losing some key pieces and Detroit...well they needed all the help they could get after losing the last of their active S53 crew, not another kick while they’re down. Who’s the Dark Horse? It’s easy enough to look at the points leader and say they’re the favorite….well because they are. What about some guys just hiding behind the top crow that maybe few folks had their ballots to start the Award Predictions this season? Daniel Laforest is one of three Edmonton Blizzard rookies, currently finding himself spending time centering Julio Tokolosh and James Truong. He’s been a pure playmaker having scored only twice but having 23 assists to his name, most of any rookie. His powerplay time has been mostly nonexistent so to do this all at 5v5 is still impressive. Edward Williams is the hottest forward it seems, recording 3 goals and 5 assists in his last 5 games. Beibitzhanov is one of the trendy choices looking back the last couple seasons with goalies being the winners of the Jesster. His current 0.916 is decent and behind some of the eye popping numbers in Kata Vilde and Knox Booth. Code: WC 1200ish
