Another Hall of Fame ceremony (check it out tomorrow), another legendary ballot for voters to choose from. Maybe moreso than any first year ballot in recent memory, the newcomers hoping to get inducted in the SHL Hall of Fame are extremely impressive this year. Much like last season, I am going to go through each of the newcomers to the ballot, and touch on the players who have a chance to get in who are on their 2nd-7th seasons trying to get inducted. Last season I was 2/3 with my predictions of induction, with Sophia Bennett, Beaujeaux Biscuit, and Johannes Leitner all receiving induction. With that being said, lets jump into it!

Mike Izzy, @Mike Izzy, F, Dragons
Career Stats: 950 GP, 360 G, 448 A, 808 P
Playoff Points: 157
Challenge Cups: 3
Awards: 5 All Star Teams, 1 Dar (7 noms), Razov, McDonald

The legendary Mike Izzy is one of the certifiable dinosaurs up for induction this season. With a career of almost 20 full seasons at the SHL level, Izzy retired sitting 18th in all time scoring. What is maybe the most impressive is his record of Hits, where he sits 1st all time, with over 3500. This lead to him being a Dar nominee staple – being nominated 7 times, despite winning only once. A career Dragon, Izzy added 3 cups, and a Razov award in their most recent run, S50. For his longevity, superiority in the physical side of the game, and playoff dominance – Izzy will be a surefire hall of famer. I would wager a guess that he gets in first ballot – but with the fierce competition this season, only time will tell.

Flacko Lagerfield, @JSS, F, Stampede Barracuda Steelhawks
Career Stats: 650 GP, 294 G, 325 A, 619 P
Playoff Points: 79
Challenge Cups: 1
Awards: 6 All Star Teams, 2 x Mexico, Richan, 3 x Khan, 3 x Karpostov, McDonald

Another recent legend on the list, this crodie will surely find himself as a part of the Hall of Fame eventually. With a relatively short 13 SHL seasons played, Lagerfield had an incredible offensive career, scoring at a 0.95 ppg. He was able to add one Challenge Cup to his trophy case at the end of his career with the Hamilton Steelhawks as well. What might be the most impressive thing about Lagerfield is the rest of his trophy case. 6 all star teams, 2 Mexicos for league MVP, 3 Khans for players MVP, a Richan for most improved, a McDonald and 3 Karpostov’s. You would struggle to find a player who has a more filled trophy case than Lagerfield. On any other ballot he would be a no brainer first ballot Hall of Famer, but he faces stiff competition, with Izzy and several other SHL legends on the ballot. Ultimately his induction (this season or next) will come down to how voters value sustained stead production vs a shorter career that reached higher offensive heights.

Viktor Marius, @karey, F, Stampede
Career Stats: 790 GP, 294 G, 345 A, 639 P
Playoff Points: 122
Challenge Cups: 3
Awards: 1 All Star Team, 1 Dar, 1 Richan, 1 Khan

Legend after Legend after Legend. Viktor Marius is both an SHL and a Buffalo Stampede legend. He will also likely see his name in the Hall of Fame. Marius had similar stats to Lagerfield, although in more games played. He was much more of a steady performer throughout his career, but he did collect a Khan, Dar, and Richan trophy for his trophy case. Marius also benefited from greater team success, collecting 3 Challenge Cups, and chipping in an impressive 122 playoff points. His induction feels like a no brianer, but we might have to wait a season or two, especially with the strength of this class. That being said, voters can be unpredictable, so we will have to wait and see.

Benjamin Blue, @"BoucherFan12" , G, Barracuda Wolfpack
Career Stats: 497 GP, 207-241-43, 26 SO, 0.9086 Sv%
Playoffs: 22-22-5 3 SO
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: 3 All-Star Teams, 3 x McBride

With two goalies elected into the Hall of Fame last season, Benjamin Blue joins the ballot with a significantly less crowded slate of goalies competing to get into the HOF. Blue for his part had a solid career, spanning across the contending days of the Tampa Bay Barracuda. Unfortunately for him, he also was with the team for a significant portion of their rebuild, which tarnishes his record a significant amount. He played a season with the New England Wolfpack when they were loading up for a finals run, ironically being swapped with last years HOF inductee Johannes Leitner. In his prime, Blue was a monster, winning 3 McBride trophies – likely what earned him his ballot nomination. With 7 seasons on the ballot, Blue stands a solid chance at being inducted, even with no Challenge Cups to his name. It is unlikely this season with the stiff competition, but look to future seasons to see if Blue gets his name called.

Bobby Watson, @Bobby Watson, F, Stars Chiefs Panthers Specters
Career Stats: 757 GP, 292 G, 309 A, 601 P
Playoff Points: 54
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: 4 All Star Teams, McDonald

Bobby Watson was a certifiable monster in his time in the SHL. At his peak, he was an elite goal scorer, winning the McDonald, and being nominated for several awards in his career. Watson’s totals are slightly short of Marius’s in a similar number of games, however he did play a significant portion of his late career on a rebuilding Minnesota team. He lacks the hardware to compete with this ballot, but he certainly deserves the recognition of being nominated for such a prestigious honour.

Joe Kurczewski, @JKortesi81, F, Dragons Blizzard Specters Stampede pride
Career Stats: 1143 GP, 403 G, 537 A, 940 P
Playoff Points: 229
Challenge Cups: 5
Awards: 6 All Star Teams, Mexico, Dar, Richan, Razov, Khan

Aaaand we get into reason number 4 why this ballot is the best in recent memory. Joe Kurczewski is another SHL legend, who without a doubt will be a lock to be inducted on his first ballot. Playing an insane 23 seasons in the SHL, Kurczewski piled up 940 points, good for 6th all time in scoring. He also ranks 10th all time in hits, and is the all time leader for playoff points, with 229. Joe has a serioius trophy case as well, picking up some major awards, and 6 all star selections. Cap that all off with 5 Challenge Cups between his time with the Dragons, Blizzard, and Specters, and you have what truly is a bulletproof case for the Hall of Fame. If there is a certainty on this ballot, its that Joe K will be inducted this season.

Zander Rhys, @ThePandava, D, Stars Steelhawks
Career Stats: 921 GP, 173 G, 468 A, 641 P
Playoff Points: 71
Challenge Cups: 1
Awards: 5 All Star Teams, Jesster

Zander Rhys is the lone defender who is new to the ballot this season. In his 921 games, he put up over 600 points – very impressive for a defender. He was nominated three times for the Stevens, and won the Bojo Biscuit for the best defensive defenseman once in his career. Based purely on offensive stats, Rhys could see his name in the Hall of Fame, but might have to wait a season or two before induction. His Challenge Cup early in his career, as well as his 5 all star teams help him, but wont push him above some of the legends we see on this ballot as well.

Now on to the players who have already been on a ballot before, and have been waiting for induction for a little longer. I am choosing to only focus on players that stand a solid chance of getting in in the next season or two, as well as any that received votes last season.

Cedric Robinson, @grok, G, Stampede
Year on Ballot: 2
Votes in S56: 0
Career Stats: 374 GP, 207-124-30, 22 SO, 0.9117 sv%
Playoffs: 91 GP, 52-28-6, 8 SO
Challenge Cups: 2
Awards: 5 All Star Teams

Robinson sat and watched as two of his fellow goaltenders were elected into the HOF last season. While that was arguably the order it would always go in, Robinson still stands a good chance to be inducted into the Hall of Fame before his time on the ballot is up. With a stellar record, especially given his shorter career, Robinson accrued 2 Challenge Cups, and a bunch of award nominations, including 3 McBrides. If voters include the SMJHL (not sure if they do) he would be a shoe in, winning 3 GOTY in 4 seasons, and being nominated in the only season he lost it. Alas, Robinson will likely have to sit this one out, but look for his name to be called eventually.

Trevor Wilson, @twils, F, Barracuda Platoon
Career Stats: 1000 GP, 341 G, 412 A, 753 P
Playoff Points: 142
Challenge Cups: 3
Year on the ballot: 5
Votes in S55: 6
Awards: 3 All Star Teams

Slowly increasing his ballot totals year over year, Trevor Wilson received 6 votes for induction in S56, up from 1 the year prior. Part of the dominant S40’s West Kendall Platoon team, Wilson won 3 Challenge Cups, and put up an impressive 753 points in his 20 season long career. He didn’t have much to speak of in terms of awards, but did gain all star recognition in 3 of his seasons. Ultimately Wilson will be crossing his fingers that team success and longevity will etch his name in the Hall of Fame.

Cory Knouse, @ckroyal92 , F, Barracuda Blizzard
Career Stats: 850 GP, 278 G, 385 A, 663 P
Playoff Points: 89
Challenge Cups: 2
Year on the ballot: 6
Votes in S55: 1
Awards: 4 All Star Teams

After receiving 3 Hall of Fame votes in S55, Knouse decreased his total to only 1 in S56. Entering his second to last season on the ballot, Knouse faces an uphill battle to get into the Hall of Fame. With Several outstanding first ballot members, and the next two forwards after him gaining more votes in S56, he seems to be headed to the Hall of Very Good. That should not put a damper on his career, as he had an outstanding 18 SHL seasons, with 663 points to show for it. He was also able to win 2 Challenge Cups, and be appointed to 4 All Star Teams. Miracles can happen, so Knouse will keep his eye out for the next two seasons, but ultimately, it might be too much to overcome for HOF consideration.

Alex Light, @Zoone16 , F , Platoon
Career Stats: 900 GP, 331 G, 395 A, 726 P
Playoff Points: 119
Challenge Cups: 3
Year on the ballot: 6
Votes in S55: 25
Awards: 3 All Star Teams

Going from 0 votes in S55 to 25 in S56, voters have shown Alex Light that they do think he has a solid chance at the Hall of Fame. Light is also on his 6th season on the ballot, with only two opportunities to get in. With this season being an uber competitive year, his hopes must lie in the S58 ceremony, on his 7th and final eligible season. A stud for West Kendal through their dominant era, Light had a long career of 900 games, with 726 points to show for it. His 3 cups and 3 All Star teams equal his teammate Wilson’s, but his greater production/game played is likely what sets him above in terms of voting recognition. His 119 playoff points also help his case to hopefully be elected in the near future.

Corey Bearss, @CBear , F, Jets
Career Stats: 900 GP, 279 G, 396 A, 675 P
Playoff Points: 124
Challenge Cups: 2
Year on the ballot: 7
Votes in S55: 33
Awards: 3 All Star Teams, Dar, Razov

This is heartbreaking for Corey Bearss, and all the Corey Bearss fans out there. Garnering 33 votes – two shy of induction in S56, Bears missed out on Hall of Fame induction by the slimmest of margins. With the star studded S57 class, Bearss might be on the outside looking in come tomorrow’s ceremony. For someone who had consistent support from the Hall of Fame committee – even if it wasn’t enough to get in, Bearss must be one of the closest “what if’s” for Hall of Fame induction in recent memory.

With that being said, here are my predictions! As alluded to before, I think there are two no brainers for their production, longevity, and trophy cases: Mike Izzy and Joe Kurczewski. From there, there will likely be one more inductee. It is possible to have a 4th inductee, but it is not common. I would predict that Flacko Lagerfield would be inducted on his first ballot as well.

I expect Light, Marius, and Bearss to pick up some votes as well. Bearss has a (very) outside shot if some committee members feel bad for how close he has come, but realistically, it will be a Izzy – Kurczewski – Lagerfield S57 Class into the Hall of Fame.
