(GRADED) Deep Dive #1 - Detroit Falcon's First Preseason Game
#1
(This post was last modified: 02-10-2021, 07:30 PM by CptSquall.)

Game one of the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League preseason is in the books, and the exhibition has to be somewhat concerning for the Detroit Falcons, as they drop the exhibition 3 to 2.

The first period was an absolute snoozer, with Luc Blouin “blowin’” the Nevada Battleborn center with a vicious check at the 15:45 mark for a very well deserved two minute boarding penalty.

Period two proved more interesting, with the Falcons getting on the board with a pair of goals to go up two to nil. Pavel Jeziak scored his first of the season off a brilliant assist from Wen Baters, who baited the defense into crashing and set up the easy score. Jonathan Granström put up the second off a power play assist from Anton Mihailov on a holy lob.

But, just two minutes later, the Nevada Battleborn would answer back with a score of their own, the youngster Young Logo ripping a slap shot from the logo off an assist from Ravio Helminen’s helmet.

The second period would turn into chaos for the Detroit Falcons. Zoo escapee and questionable human Monkey Mann Jr. took to tripping and throwing bananas (hopefully that’s all he was throwing), and was penalized appropriately for the tripping penalty within the first minute of the period. Three minutes later, Evangelos Giannopoulos took exception to a comment about olives from a Nevada Battlehorn defenseman and took to slashing him, earning a swift two minute penalty.

Although Nevada did not capitalize here, six minutes later they were able to answer with some rough housing of their own, with a Boarding penalty from Robert Ales, a high sticking from Ravio Helminen, and holdin’ dat ish (two minute penalty) from Grandmaster Funk.

All this to say, Nevada was able to net lure Detroit into a sense of safety, and then HIT EM WITH THE DANGER in the third. Chad Danger, that is, netting the equalizer in the second minute, and thirteen minutes later putting Nevada up for good. Somewhere in between, he got a boarding penalty just to have his teammates back. Nobody penalizes Nevada that much without a response!

This game, although only an exhibition, and the very first preseason game for the new look Detroit Falcons, signals big implications for a team hoping to win a championship.

This game was a microcosm of mistakes that Detroit made last season, and will need to work to eliminate this season to stay competitive. Limiting mistakes, especially mental errors and avoidable penalties (cool it with the bananas, Monkey Mann? Your father would never.)

Detroit showed their firepower early, which will help get rookie Podan Podanović in net for some blowouts, but they’ll need to sure up their late game defense. Maybe it was just offseason rust, but Detroit looked winded after two periods, probably because of all the pilsners the boys had been drinking throughout the day trying to free Podan. But that is another story! One that you can find in Podan’s first team building experience.

(P.S. Sorry to chop down your title, wouldn't let me put graded in it which is required of me.)
