S58 PT #2 Payday!
#76

What did I do with my money when I got my first contract? Well, that is a great question. The first thing that I did with the new money that I received was I paid off my parent's house. They did so much for me to put me in a position to be able to be where I am now, so it was important to me to be able to give back to them to show them how much they mean to me. I really think that was the first thing that I did with the rookie contract that I got from the New England Wolfpack. Then, I would definitely pay off any debts that I have to anyone as well as go to Chick Fil A and just get a few chicken sandwiches. I really like chicken sandwiches and I think that would be a really fun way to spend the money. I think those two would be great ways to spend money.

Cillian has been in the SHL for a few seasons now and is deciding to spend/save his money very wisely. He's used a good amount of salary to invest in stocks and save a good amount for after he retires. When he received his rookie contract from Kelowna, Cillian treated himself by buying a brand new 2020 Chevy Silverado. A vehicle with good traction in the snow was paramount during Kelowna's winter seasons so this was a must have for Cillian who needed to be able to get back and forth to the rink reliably. More big purchases over the years have been a new summer home for Cillian parents in the states who enjoy coming over during the season to watch Cillian play. Cillian also purchased a stay-in chef to prepare meals for Cillian on a daily basis. Diet is important to Cillian and having to focus on other things, this is a much needed asset for Cillian so he doesn't need to worry about preparing meals around game days. Cillian just began a save fund to purchase a vacation home - although unsure exactly where he would like to settle. Since making the move from Kelowna to Texas, Cillian often misses the colder weather and we may see him settle down somewhere up North or on the East coast of the states.

Chimkin Tendy has to send half of his contract money back home to Serbia to his parents in order to keep them out of the gulag. His parents are deeply in debt with the Serbian Mafia, which controls half of the country. They give $3 million to the mafia and then use a little bit extra that he sent to survive off borsch and squirrel. With the other half he doesn’t send to his family, he spends on borsch and squirrel for himself. He doesn’t pay rent or have a mortgage because he lives in a cave in the mountains outside of Anchorage. He doesn’t have a car payment because he rides a moose to the arena for practice and games. He doesn’t have a cellphone, the team must alert him of meetings and the like via smoke signal, which he is always keeping an eye out for. He once rode his moose 12 miles to what he thought was a smoke signal but ended up being the old tire factory on 7th that was engulfed in flames. He put the fire out and returned to his cave home.

Noah has begun to invest his money into the hockey trading card market. To his surprise, the market is a lot more expensive than he anticipated. It's crazy to imagine how expensive a simple box of 24 packs of cards (with 8 cards each) can be. When you're paying triple digits for a couple pieces of cardboard, you really question how you're investing your money. At that's just for the more standard cards. If you really want, you can spend $150 on 8 packs with only 4 cards each for a bit of a higher end product. Even still, you can go all in and pay nearly $1000 for a box of just 6 cards. Yup, just 6 cards. Granted these cards typically all have autographs and pieces of memorabilia on them, but still. Noah hasn't gone that far into his hockey card collection, but with the money he's making in the SHL, it certainly won't be long before he dives head first into the deep end.

In the past, I followed Dr. Eric Cantona and his ideas on how to live life. I used most of my salary on alcoholic beverages, ladies, and fast cars. The rest I just wasted. At some point, I realized that living like that is not the smartest way for a professional hockey player to live, so I decided to change. Nowadays, I rarely drink or party with the laydees, I also have just one car. When the payday comes I put some of my money into cryptocurrencies. I'm not going to claim I have any idea of how the crypto world works, but I must say it's a lot more exciting than gambling or putting money on the lottery.

I have also been looking into art as an investment. Art is something I know absolutely nothing about, but in my opinion, a nice painting offers a lot more than x amount of my money on my bank account. I like to look at the paintings in the morning and see what kind of ideas and feelings they spark inside of me.

The rest of the money goes to the basics, I try to live and eat like a professional hockey player, so I have a professional chef to cook for me a couple of times a week. That costs some money with the ingredients of course, but it has been well worth it.

Money, there never seems to be enough money after all of the training costs and personal coaching.  This year however, after a big win at the casino and some social media endorsements (increased Twitter payout), money is a little more free to spend on some of the luxuries in life.  Since we spend so much time on the road and with the team, there is only so much you want to spend on your living arrangements during the season.  One area where I finally spent some money was on a new car.  I looked at a number of options, Ferrari, Range Rover, Audi, Mercedes Benz, but I ultimately settled on getting two vehicles.  First was a McLaren P1 which was a reluctant sub to the car of my dreams growing up, the McLaren F1.  Secondly, since we play in a cold weather place, was a Porsche Macan.  Both will have their place but it seemed necessary to add both some sport and some utility to the fleet.

While initially instilled with a high degree of patience and maturity regarding his finances, LaFleur is showing extreme red flags with his spending habits. Reports are that during the start of the season, LaFleur spent lavishly on imported exotic animals. Whether or not this is an influence by his friend and teammate, #A-Rye, this is a worrying sign for the defenseman in his sophomore junior season. We've been hearing that some animal rights activists have become very vocal on social media, prompting animal control to take action. They entered LaFleur's Kelowna residence, and were seen on video removing a large toucan from the home. Also seen in the footage was LaFleur himself running out the front door, naked, after it. He was waving his hands in an aggressive manner while screaming "They tooky my touccy!".

A bystander caught the entire exchange on video, and made this comment: "I was just walking past his driveway, and he came flying out yelling. He wasn't wearing any clothes, and he smelled like cigarettes and shame."

The weird thing about the SHL and SMJHL is that you need to pay for your own equipment and it's incredibly expensive. But man, once you buy that special equipment, you just feel like you know how to play better. And the more you buy, the better you get. But it only works once per season for some reason so naturally, Jasper spends all his money on getting that magical equipment every year. His contract money doesn't even cover it so he can barely afford other stuff like a place to live, even in places like Québec City or Winnipeg (yes, he already got a place in Winnipeg for the occasional day he spends there to fanboy over his SHL team). He picked up a second job as a graphics designer for players who are full of themselves and want graphics of themselves made and that helps him pay for his equipment obsession and other essential needs.

With his newly earned money, Grape Fruit immediately spent some of it for a top of the line gaming PC. When not practicing or doing hockey related things, Grape Fruit is probably gaming. This year's salary has allowed him to upgrade his setup significantly. Other than that, Grape Fruit is pretty frugal and chooses to save a lot of money because nothing is certain and it is always important to have a strong financial foundation. That and a really nice car. Even though Grape Fruit has learned that traffic is terrible in Los Angeles, he at least looks good in his new self driving Tesla. When Grape Fruit hits his big contract in the future, perhaps there will be more of a spending spree to celebrate even more income. That spending spree would probably include a nice house in LA and another nice vacation house in the mountains to get away from the noise of the city.

This is a sad but true story. I have to ration my paycheck. I’m not like other guys. I’m quirky. I don’t do anything. So I need that money to at least buy a little training during the season.

These other guys have jobs. Or make pictures. Or make word groups. Not me. I’m not like those guys. I eat beans and canned chicken. I so quirky.

Everyone makes fun of my bad equipment. It’s not bad. It’s just old. I can’t afford a new one. I think the league should actually just give me money for being a free spirit. That way I won’t fall behind all these chads with their money, and their haircuts, and their loafers.

What’s that Brecken? Preston is going to be late for the regatta? I’m writing this on a typewriter at an independently owned, humanely sourced coffee establishment. And I’m out of money.

It does not matter to me if the season has just ended, or is just began, I am on the ice preparing for the next season. When it comes to hockey, we are not getting any younger. I have been in this league for 10 seasons now and am about to hit my peak. To me this means that I need to try harder than ever. That is why all of my money that I make goes right back into investments into myself. It takes a lot of money to hire a whole team of personal coaches as well as be able to maintain my gear and secure new gear. It's is estimated that a player trying to stay in peak performance in this league needs to be able to earn about 15 mil every season between contracts, endorsements, and plain old any work we can get in order to make ends meat. While I can still pound skill into my body I am out there harnessing every opportunity possible. When I am getting older is when ill save money. Right now, I need to build that body.

So after Igor Victory won the Four Star Cup with the Armada, the Gold in the WJC, and making it onto the opening night roster for the Tampa Bay Barracuda, he's got a good chunk of money to spend. Of course, he's just relocated from Anchorage to Tampa Bay. So going from the extreme cold to the daily 70F plus weather, he had to make some more serious purchases to help acclimate to the new climate. He first went out and sold a bunch of his cold weather gear, his snowmobile, snowboard, snow boots, snow blower, etc. He already has a lot of that stuff back home in Finland. Anyways, back to what he's going to buy in Tampa Bay. First things first is a Jet Ski, look at Kenny Powers and how much he enjoys his Jet Ski! It's a no brainer, plus now he can jet ski to the rink for practices. He's investing in a boat as well, he just can't get away from the Boats apparently. Then a brand new AC system for his new house. That's a must down in Tampa Bay.

Finn von Murphenstein loves Payday, it's his favourite game in existence and he shares fond memories of playing it with his friends when he was in high school. Oh wait, wrong payday. All jokes aside he is a very reasonable player and tends to save all his money for the important parts of his career. While on the first day after payday he has a ritual to get a nice and expensive steak cut from his favourite butcher in Carolina and cook an awesome dinner for himself (usually for himself and friends but there is a pandemic going on) he usually saves all his money for weekly personal training with his coach who he has been working with for a long time. All that is leftover usually goes into buying an expensive offseason workout to identify and get better at the problems and weak points of his game. Usually, it is worth it but this offseason Finn felt like some of the experience he earned he could not get to use right away but it will probably be something that will make him better in the future.
