Newfoundland Berserkers Game Reactions for Day 9

Pregame coverage: The Zerks will take on St. Louis and Maine. St. Louis is coming into this a mediocre 8-11 while Maine is arguably the worst team in the SMJHL. To be honest when the Zerks realized that Maine was back on the menu after some really hard games, the feeling of elation throughout the locker room was palpable. Still coming into the league with many Zerks at the top of the leaderboards in categories like assists and goals, the Zerks look to keep it going.

Game 21: St. Louis Scarecrows  at Newfoundland Berserkers
Newfoundland welcomed St. Louis to home ice by thrashing them 7-1. It was a competitive hockey game in name only. It was really a parade for the Zerks to assert their dominance. The scarecrows were so terrified they had to use two different goalies in this game. Sympathy for the backup who had to come in and take an absolute thrashing.

Lots of great Zerk performances in this game. Matty Sandeen scored his first goal of this season. Bud Weiser, a depth winger who signed as free agent, whom wasn’t expected to hit the ice much, has another great game and scores his first goal on the season. Aleksandrs Balcers, the first overall pick, has continued his nice season by scoring another goal and getting an assist. Vaseline Podcalzone and Nike Kickz Jr both scored goals. All around the goals were shared among the Zerks tonight but there was one who rose above the others.

Before we get to our Zerk of the Game let’s take a moment to acknowledge captain of the Zerks, Vaseline Podcalzone, because in this game he scored his 100th point in his J career. Podcalzone has had one of the best careers any Zerk has ever had and it’s a very commendable and incredible achievement that he was able to get here. So many big moments along the way to this journey. Winning the Four Star Cup as a rookie, getting drafted, doing a rebuild, and now back to see the Zerks in winning form. It’s been a long journey to this 100th point. With that let’s go to Podcalzone for his thoughts, “Man, getting that 100th career point in the J feels great. You know, coming over from Russia, not sure if I have a future, and then turning it into what’s going on my fourth season here with the Zerkers, it’s been an absolute ride, and I’ve loved every second of it.” Next I was curious as to what he thought his greatest achievement was so far, “It’s a good question, obviously it’d make sense to point at winning the Four Star Cup but honestly I wasn’t really a huge contributor there besides being a fourth line grinder. But yeah, I think just wearing the C for the Zerkers is probably the biggest accomplishment I could ask for. It really means a lot for me and shows how much the organization has put their trust in me, ever since they drafted me 31st overall way back a few seasons ago.” Lastly what did he think about his potential legacy? “Honestly, I just want them to remember me in some way shape or form. Obviously in a positive light, of course. I wasn’t really a huge player until probably my third season, but yeah, I think I’ve made huge strides as a Zerker, and really hope folks in Newfoundland remember me seasons and seasons later.” Truly an incredible career for Podcalzone. Likely his last season in Newfoundland before moving to the Pacific North West to play for Seattle. It’s truly been a career worth remembering forever in Zerks history. With that let’s go to our Zerk of the Game.

Zerk of the Game honors goes to: Dwayne Gretzky. This is Gretz third Zerk of the Game award this season and it is well deserved after scoring 2 goals, notching an apple, and playing solid D at the wing position. Great job leading the team to a massive victory against the Crows. Congrats!

Game 22: Newfoundland Berserkers  at Maine Timber
The Zerks performance in Maine was in many ways even less of a hockey game than the game against Maine. While it may have only ended 4-0, this score does not tell the whole story. The real score of this game is better indicated by the fact that the Zerks outshot maine 51-5. So while yes the scoreboard might say 4-0, in my heart this was a 10-0 thrashing by the Zerks.

So many great performances to note. Let’s get Evgeni Petrov out of the way. Did Petrov only face 5 shots? Yes. But he didn’t allow any of them in and that makes this Petrov’s 3rd shutout on the season. A very impressive feat by the young rookie congratulations. Jesse Trudeau had two apples and while Ric Charleswroth didn’t have a goal he was able to amass a whopping 9 shots on goal. Dwayne Gretzky had another stellar game notching two more goals on his season.

Zerk of the Game honors has to go to: Aleksandrs Balcers! The rookie had another fantastic performance by scoring 2 goals and notching an apple from the blue line. Balcers was a huge reason why the Maine Timber could only manage a lowly 5 SOG in the game. His defense was so dominant this evening that there wasn’t much that could be done by them. And then he was an absolute terror on offense. Simply put Balcers showed Maine that they need to fear this Zerk for a long time still. An absolute force on the ice.

Postgame Coverage:
Two solid wins set the Zerks up for a 16-6(32 Points) record on the season. Good for 3rd best in the SMJHL. The Zerks have been dominant this season on an individual level as well. Ric Charlesworth and Bas O’Bigbers are numbers 1 and 2 on the points list with 25 and 24 points respectively. Aleksandrs Balcers is tied for 2nd the SMJHL in +-, Matty Sandeen is leading the entire SMJHL in assists, and Hugo Gronroos has been great this season with a .910 SV%. Overall it’s been a good season and the Zerks are only getting started. Time to rethink this team pundits.
